Suzanne's 2 cents' worth: THE KISS

Or Confessions of a Hopeless Romantic/Pride and Prejudice Revisited

I'm an avid moviegoer, as the other Quills can attest to. In fact, I go to the movies once a week, sometimes twice. I'm also a romance writer, so it's no surprise that my favorite movies are those with a strong romantic theme.

Keeping in mind that I haven't seen King Kong (for reasons which have little to do with a really busy writing schedule and everything to do with a love triangle that includes a gigantic ape), my favorite romantic movie of the past year was Pride and Prejudice.

Yes, I saw Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Yes, the movie was funny and sexy. Yes, this one ran a close second in my book. Still, if I were exiled to a deserted island to live out the rest of my natural life and could take only one DVD, I'd pick Pride and Prejudice.

The question is: Which version of Pride and Prejudice would I take with me?

    In chronological order they are:

    1. Greer Garson/Laurence Olivier (1940) Original b/w movie. Wonderful actors, but a little long in the tooth to play Miss Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. And I couldn't get past the Victorian costumes. (I read somewhere they were left over from filming Gone With the Wind, which would explain why it felt and looked like the wrong time period.)

    2. Elizabeth Garvie/David Rintoul (1980) First of the BBC mini-series versions. She's delightful as Elizabeth Bennett. He's a bit stiff as Darcy. The characters and dialogue, while faithful to Jane Austen's book, seem uncomfortably stilted at times.

    3. Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth (1995) Second BBC mini-series is considered the definitive version by many fans. It's certainly the most comprehensive with a running time of 300 minutes. Of course, my favorite scene is not from the book. (Those P&P aficionados among you will know exactly which scene I mean: the one where Colin/Darcy dives into the pond at Pemberley, his country estate.)

    4. Keira Knightly/Matthew MacFayden (2005) The latest film version, which I was thrilled to see twice before the darned theaters pulled it to start showing a "slasher" movie.

    Modern Updates:

    5. Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) A kind-of retelling of P&P.

    6. Pride and Prejudice (2003) Elizabeth is a college student. Darcy is a businessman. No, I haven't seen it.

    7. Bride and Prejudice (2004) The Bollywood version starring Naveen Andrews of "Lost" fame.

    Now about: THE KISS

I hope this isn't a "spoiler" for anyone, but Darcy and Elizabeth don't KISS at the end of Jane Austen's book. However, they do KISS in my two favorite film versions: the 1995 mini-series and this latest movie.

I can still hear the collective sigh that went up from the primarily young and female audience the night I went to see P&P, as Darcy, shirt open at the neck, collar missing, hair rumpled, breeches snug and coat flapping in the morning mist, strides across an open field toward Elizabeth. And when THE KISS comes, you could have heard a pin drop in that theater.

I'm not a Jane Austen purist. I am a hopeless romantic. So I was thrilled that we got THE KISS in this country. (Bowing to purist-power, they did not get THE KISS in the UK.)

I dug out my copy of Pride and Prejudice today a tattered and well-thumbed paperback. I've placed it on the top of my TBR stack to be reread during my next hiatus. I've decided it's time to revisit Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennett as they were written by Jane Austen.

And apparently I'm not the only one who has been inspired by the movie to reread the book. In this morning's newspaper, right there on the local best-sellers list at #10 is Pride and Prejudice.

So which version of the movie -- along with a copy of the book, of course -- would you pack for an extended stay on a deserted island?

    --- Suzanne

I'm afraid I'm a book purist - I would never take a movie over a book. And while I admit I love the BBC version (1995) and have sat through all six hours on more than once occasion, the book will always remain my first love. But if I can take both, well, I'm not going to argue. *g*

So far, I've only seen the Garvie/Rintoul and Ehle/Firth film versions. I like them both, but prefer the latter, mostly because of Colin Firth as Darcy.

Well, ok, I've seen "BJ's Diary too. It was ok, but I didn't love it. But that's mostly a weird prejudice against Renee Z on my part. She has a weird face. And I resented that she got "fat" (aka normal-sized!!!) for the part. They couldn't just hire an actress with curves?? But I digress...

I really want to see the Knightly/MacFayden version, but locally it was here and gone before I could much more than blink so I'm watching for it to appear in second-run theaters. Based on reviews I've read, I expect to like it if I go into it with the attitude that it's a Regency romance, but not really Austen.

One review I read cracked me up. It said something like "...this isn't Austen, it's Emily Bronte. But it was the best 'Wuthering Heights' I've ever seen."

But like most people who love to read, I always prefer the book.

Wow, this got long. Sorry! :-)

I'd pack the 6 hr 1995 version, but that's because if I'm on an extended stay on a deserted island (that conveniently has electricity, a TV, and a DVD), I'd need a longer distraction. Plus Colin Firth, of course.

But I adored the new version with Knightly and MacFayden. I hope it does well with the coming awards nominations.

(that was my delete, I wasn't very clear)
I'd choose the book version without the movie version at all... I like my imagination's interpretation better than I like most director's versions...lol. I'd have to pack nonsense DVDs such as stand up comedy along with my favorite set of DVD's - Band of Brothers... that'd keep me busy :)

Haven't seen them all, but I do think that the young Laurence Olivier was the DEFINITIVE Darcy!

Suzanne, this is for you: The Jane Austen Action Figure!

The 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice was lovely. I saw it with my husband on Christmas Day, and I, another hopeless romantic, loved every minute of it. Of course, I will hang onto my taped Colin Firth version which I also very much enjoy. :)

The reactions of the people in the theatre during the Knightly version were fun--laughter at Mr. Collins and Lydia, indignation at Darcy's first proposal, and of course, the sigh as Darcy and Lizzy finally kiss. And best of all, my husband, sitting next to me, liked it too! It was a nice Christmas present.

McFadyen had the smug, smoldering, arrogant yet insecure, English titled-guy thing down pat. He totally ruled as Darcy. I heart him big time.

I'd take the Colin Firth version anyday, definitely my favorite.

The 2003 version where they are young college students is pretty good as well. It was a cute version of the story, I enjoyed it for what it was.

I have to say I love them all, for different reasons. I'd have to take them all, cramming them onto some Super-Size DVD. Thus, I can continue to watch the movie over and over again, claiming I am doing research instead of writing ;-)

    Great blog!

I first read Pride and Prejudice at 16 and it was a thrill to take my 11 year old daughter to the new movie and swoon all over again. I have watched all the versions (except the college one... and didn't realize Bridget Jones was even a version!) and loved the Colin Firth one the most because it covered everything.

I liked the new one except for the cheesy ending by the pond.

    Stacy,

If you like your romances to be contemporary, funny (remembering I call it my "Iowa cornball" sense of humor), and sexy, may I suggest you try SWEETHEART, INDIANA?

    Thanks for asking!

It would have to be the 1995 A&E version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (YUM). Of course, I would also have to take my well read and well worn copy of P&P my big brother bought me over 25 (yikes) years ago!!

The Bridget Jones (Edge of Reason) DVD has her in character interviewing Colin Firth (playing himself) with her fawning over him and repeatedly bringing up the diving into the pond/wet shirt scene in her 'interview'. This was in the book but not in the movie itself, because of course Colin Firth was playing her Mr. Darcy hence it being an extra. Kind of off topic here but it was funny.

I read this post last night and today one of the women in work offered me the copy of P&P she had out in her car (so I'd have something more to do than sit around - a long story). At any rate if I had to bring a DVD, it would HAVE to be the A&E version. I love that one. You all really don't want to know what book I'd bring. :-)

Note to all: never see the 2003 version where Elizabeth is a college student. It's truly awful. It's set in modern times, so to deal with the pressure to get married the characters are all Morman (who tend to marry young). The script and the acting are both terrible.

My personal pics would be the Colin Firth version, although I did like the Kiera Knightly version as well. I think the cinemetography is better in the newer version. Visually it's just a prettier film.

I have yet to see the knightly 2005 version, due to my girlfriends being sticks in the mud and saying it will be more fun to watch it all together where we can talk during the movie. They could be right. And oh, it is so the truth that the best loved seen from the 95 A&E version is Darcy coming up out of that lake after riding home. Oh yeah. That should have been in Jane's novel. I do just love that version. I bought it on vhs, and then a few years ago as a birthday treat to myself on DVD. I love to just pick my favorite scenes and watch them anytime. Modern technology is great. I would take that version and the book. I keep seeing Mansfield park on tv, and have to say I would want an entire Jane Austen dvd collection should I be stuck on a deserted Island. Incidentaly what do you all think about Mandy Moore playing Jane Austen in her upcoming movie??? I went to IMDB.com today and as amazed, apparently its a love story about Jane and and Irishman. hm.

    Dear Cheriden,

Hmmmmmm . . . is right! Mandy Moore playing Jane Austen? I must admit I hadn't heard that news. Surely there's a young English actress perfect for the role? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for sharing the info on any and all things Jane Austen!
