  • Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

    What is a Mystery Blogger?

A mystery blogger can be one who blogs about mysteries, or a blogger who is a mystery. In this case I'm a little of one and a lot of the other. From time to time I'll give my non-author perspective on mysteries and to a somewhat lesser extent, other genres. I certainly don't limit myself to mysteries; I enjoy and will digest any good yarn. That's why my friends call me the Yarn Maggot.

In mysteries more than any other genre, a continuing hero or heroine is common. I really like that. I love to get attached to a leading character and look forward to renewing my acquaintance whenever I read the next book in a series.

I just finished reading ONE SHOT, the ninth book in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. For those of you who are not squeamish, I heartily recommend this series of hard-boiled mysteries. Jack Reacher is a former Army MP who is now spending his life roaming the country and while he's not looking for trouble, trouble finds him. These books are full of action, but Reacher also uses his head for more than head-butts.

ONE SHOT opens with a sniper firing six shots, point blank range, at pedestgrians in a southern Indiana city. The case is apparently quickly solved, but the mystery and mayhem have just begun. This is an edge-of-the-seat read with surprises galore. The other books in the series in order are: KILLING FLOOR, DIE TRYING, TRIPWIRE, RUNNING BLIND, ECHO BURNING, WITHOUT FAIL, PERSUADER, and THE ENEMY. The 10th book in the series, which I assume will be released later this year, is entitled THE HARD WAY.

So long for now, I need to get back to the SciFi yarn I'm currently digesting.

    Happy New Year!

    The Yarn Maggot

I have read Lee Child's "the Enemy" and "One Shot". Both are great mysteries. I love the Jack Reacher series. Another author is Robert Crais' Elvis Cole series. His next book is "Two Minute Rule" coming Feb. 21, but is not a Cole book. It is a standalone. And I am fascinated (sp?)with John Sandford's "Prey" series. It seems he, too, is trying out another new character in his coming new book. For sciFi, have you read Charlaine Harris' new book "Grave Sight"? She also writes the Sookie Stackhouse series. All are great reads.

I'll pass along the name of this author to the mystery and suspense readers I know. Thank you for sharing!

If your friends call you The Yarn Maggot, maybe you need some new friends....

I'm currently reading some old friends who have been lurking on my TBR for entirely too long: Elizabeth George and Ruth Rendell.

I LOVE Lee Child's Jack Reacher AND Robert Crais's Elvis Cole (and Joe Pike) AND Barry Eisler's John Rain; it's so nice to follow a character over a period of time. You get to know them and their story, see the growth and get a more in-depth view of what makes them tick. I've got all the books from each of these writers; when I find an author I love I go all out and work very hard to get my hands on anything and everything.
Some of my old-time favourites: Agatha Christie, Mary Stewart, Robert Ludlum, Alistair MacLean and Jack Higgins - been reading them for YEARS!! Characters and relationships are what make a story work for me, no matter what the genre.
Glad I can read, 'cause I sure can't write!
I very much enjoy the runningquills blog and I have been enjoying various books from each of these wonderful storytelling ladies! Thank you ^.^
