Suzanne, donning her Hollywood Reporter Hat: "Becoming Jane"

Back on January 5, 2006, I blogged on THE KISS. Subtitle: Confessions of a Hopeless Romantic or Pride and Prejudice Revisited.

As the avid moviegoer among the Quills I gave my two cents' worth about the various films/mini-series that have been based on, or inspired by, my favorite Jane Austen book, Pride and Prejudice.

NOTE: Actually every Austen classic has now been made into a movie or mini-series several times over. Truth is, film makers have run out of Jane Austen books. (There were only six completed novels in all.)

So it's now rumored that twenty-three-year-old American actress Anne Hathaway (yes, she of "The Princess Diaries," "Ella Enchanted," and most recently "Brokeback Mountain" fame) will play Jane Austen in the upcoming film, "Becoming Jane."

Purportedly this will be the story of a twenty-year-old Jane in love with an Irish bad boy (are there any other kind?) named Tom Lefroy, and will explain how or why she became Jane the writer. Fellow cast members are hinted to include Maggie Smith and Julie Walters.

This latest rumor seems to supplant the previous rumor that American pop singer-actress Mandy Moore was going to star in the role of Jane Austen. (Praise be to the movie gods!)

Of course, Mandy may have made a fine Jane Austen, but once an actor/actress claims a role as his/her own, it's difficult to imagine anyone else filling those shoes. Cinematically speaking, of course.

Consider the following casting or miscasting rumors:

Nicole Kidman in the role of Mrs. Smith in last year's hit movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." (In the end, the part went to Angelina Jolie, which, of course, led to that whole Bradgelina thing.)

Not Harrison Ford, but Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." (Boggles the mind!)

Robert Redford in the role made famous by Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate."

Bill Murray as Forrest Gump??????

And last, but far from least, and not even a huge stretch of the imagination for most of us, Cary Grant as Bond. James Bond. (Of course, Sean Connery was the definitive Bond.)

So here are my "inquiring mind" questions for this week: Are you a movie-goer? If not, do you rent or watch movies at home? Do you have a favorite movie?

(I will try to refrain from answering that last question myself since my personal favorites -- I could never pick just one -- encompass anything and everything from "Casablanca" to "Elizabeth," from "Mrs. Miniver" to "The Return of the King" to the latest version of "Pride and Prejudice.")

Happy Mid-Week!
Or as we think of Wednesdays in our house: Happy Movie Night!

Yes, my hubby and I are definitely movie goers, if we don't eat out almost every night, we watch a movie every other night (and in between work and eating and movies, I read). Suzanne, that is one question that really got me thinking, I have so many favorite movies, I guess I'll begin with the classics, Casablanca, An Affair To Remember, Sound of Music, Grease 2, Westside Story, Annie and of course recently the list has just grown tremendously...to continue, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Sean of the Dead, Spiderman, Fever Pitch, True Lies, Raising Helen, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe...I'm sure there are more, but these are the one's that just came to mind. Thanks.

Before I moved up to Northern CA, I used to go to the movies like once a week...
Spent a lot of money, but the ones I saw were worth it.
Now that I am in school and have NO money to spend nine dollars on a movie ticket, the last movie I saw in the theatre was Domino...It's sad I know.
I find that most of my friends have all the movies I want to see, so I wait until they buy them and then I sit on their couches or beds (depending on where the TV is) and watch the latest movie.
Favorite movies you ask? Dangerous question for any person....Good luck reading the massive lists that everyone will be SURE to provide....
Here's mine:
South Pacific, Gone With the Wind, Mary Poppins, Sound of Music, The Great Escape, Ice Pirates, ANY Disney movie pre 2004, ET, Titanic, The Cutting Edge, Jurassic Park I and II, and many more, but these were the ones worth mentioning.

I used to go to the movies a lot more than I do now. Mostly because it is often an effort to simply leave the house once I get comfortable! This from someone who spent a good part of my childhood at double features for most of the day!
It is difficult to pick a favorite but these rank up there at the top. These a re films that I can watch over and over again without them ever being repetitive.
Cinema Paradiso - Two for the Road - Truly, Madly, Deeply - The Unforgiven (w/ Burt Lancaster) - West Side Story - Time Bandits - Orlando - Hope and Glory and probably a million more!

My husband and I both love watching movies. We tend to prefer watching at home with the surround sound system and the big screen television since it allows us to pause when necessary...lol.

There are so many movies that I love that I can't choose only one but my #1 pick is Band of Brothers, the entire series.

I recently had to come up with my favorite top ten movies, below is my list. Aside from the first one they aren't in any particular order.

1 Band of Brothers
2 Austin Powers... Goldmember
3 X-Men (all of 'em)
4 Full Metal Jacket
5 Saving Private Ryan
6 West Side Story
7 Jesus Christ Superstar
8 Apocalypse Now
9 Finding Nemo
10 The Little Mermaid

Great topic, Suzanne... and some of those "possible actors" for those well-known movies are very scary! lol.

Irish bad boys are the very best kind of boys... ha! I married one!

Not at all a film person here--being hard of hearing doesn't help. The last film I saw in a theatre was VAN HELSING--at least it had Hugh Jackman bare-chested.

As for worst casting decisions, did you know that Shirley Temple was originally slated to play Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ?

As for Jane Austen, it seems entirely appropriate for the star of THE PRINCESS DIARIES to play her: I read in what was at the time the definitive biography of her a quotation from a letter of someone who met her when she was about 16 and visiting friends, who described her as, in effect, a boy-crazy empty-headed teenager!

I used to be a big film buff especially while I was in France and Germany. They have a lot of film clubs there at which they screen classics and cutting-edge films.

My favorite films are:
1. Les enfant du paradis F 1945
2. Citizen Kane
3. Alexander Nevski (RU)
4. Gone with the Wind
5. Sous les toits de Paris
6. Roman Holiday
7. Singin' in the Rain
8. Passport to Pimlico
9. Adam's Rib
10. LotR trilogy

The first two are my favorites. The rest are in the order that they came to me and I thought I'd better stop at 10. I must confess I've seen very few films since I came back in 1980--at least ones that could make it into my top 20.

I only go to the cinema if it's something I've been metaphorically dying to see - it's simply too expensive a luxury otherwise.

However if I rent a movie and like it, I nearly always buy a copy. My VHS and DVD collection is a thing to marvel at. *g*

Favourite movies, in no particular order:

Dangerous Liaisons
The Muppet Movie
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Tank Girl
My Fair Lady
Practical Magic
Lilo & Stitch
Dogma
Clue
Men In Black
Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Between teaching full time, and taking classes at night, I'd much rather watch movies on my comfortable couch. A few of my favorites in no particular order: Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story I & II, The Hunt for Red October (I love Sean Connery), African Queen, My Big Fat Greek Wedding...

So many movies; so little time!

I'm really enjoying reading your lists of favorites. Many of the films you name are my favorites, too.

I also realize I'm more apt to go out to the movies since my office is in my home. If I were away all day, I'd no doubt elect to rent more DVDs or watch them on ppv.

I didn't put any animation on my list, but I, too, loved Ice Age, Finding Nemo, Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Monsters, Inc. and so many more in that genre.

Movies! I love em! But can't always find the time to get to the theater. HOWEVER, the movie gods smile on us every Tuesday at Wal-Mart with new DVDs running in the $14 range. I typically will purchase movies, and my collection is close to 200 now. I don't stick with a particular genre, but if I find an actor/actress that I like, I will try and watch everything they have done. My current fave actor: Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, Lara Croft 2, Dear Frankie fame) If you don't know his work... do a little research. He is delightful.

Fave Movies:
1. Anything with Gerard Butler, Carey Grant, Johnny Depp or Al Pacino
2. Band of Brothers
3. Patton
4. 7 Brides for 7 Brothers
5. Singin in the Rain
6. Mr. & Mrs. Smith
7. Troy
8. Hamlet (with Mel Gibson)
9. Dances with Wolves
10. Last of the Mohicans

Great, great movie.

cbell,

I'm in complete agreement about Gerard Butler and have seen all his movies you mention, plus the slightly weird Dracula 2000, in which he played Dracula.

For a little while GB was one of the names bandied about to be the new James Bond, along with Clive Owen, Jude Law, and Hugh Jackman.
Not too sure how I feel about Daniel Craig getting the role. (I keep picturing him in his role from Lara Croft, Tomb Raider.)

dfender, The Patriot made me cry. But, then, so did The Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart and so many other cut-right-to-the-heart films.

talpianna, fascinating insight into Jane Austen. Boy crazy at sixteen! Perhaps she was more like Lydia Bennett than Elizabeth Bennett, after all.

pia, I see An Affair to Remember on your list. One of my favorite old movies. My husband and I have been known to create our own film festivals, i.e. we'll watch An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and follow it with Sleepless in Seattle.

Katrina, I've always loved South Pacific, but it's on my list of "movies that make me cry."

So many movies, so little time....
Favorites (in no order):

Pirates of the Carribean (sp?)
King Arthur w/ Clive Owen (yummy!)
Must Love Dogs
The Cutting Edge
Beaches
The Joy Luck Club
Blade 1 and 3
Hutch
I, Robot
Indiana Jones #3
Pride & Predjudice (sp?)
LOTR Trilogy
ANY Harry Potter
Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy
Benny & June
Sleepy Hollow

OK, I'll stop now. Needless to say I could do the Energizer Bunny bit and go on and on.....

As to where to watch them, nothing beats the experience of sitting in a movie theatre. BUT, considering I am on a very limited budget I only get to go about once a year. So, WALMART and Rogers Video, here I come. (I swear I pay for at least one of their employees!)

Hi Suzanne,

Yup definitely since we've moved to Seattle, an Affair to Remember followed by Sleepless in Seattle has been a good marathon movie for us (even when my hubby keeps on commenting that it is a girlie movie, he still watches with me).

We also love animations like The Emperor's New Groove, The Incredibles, Ice Age, Monster's Inc. Oh and my hubby loves Final Fantasy the full length movie, I on the other hand do not get it.

Suzanne:

Yep... Dracula 2000 was a little on the cheesy side... but Butler's performance stood out amongst some other mediocre actors in that film. I knew he was up for Bond... and while I'm glad he wasn't pigeon-hole'd into that role, I am with you in my reservations of Daniel Craig... reminding myself that Sean Connery is the all-time best Bond anyway!

Suzanne, I think Jane at sixteen may have resembled the heroine of NORTHANGER ABBEY more than Lydia Bennett, who was, after all, no better than she should be!

There are some films I like a lot. My all-time favorites are MY FAIR LADY, HENRY V (both the Olivier and the Branagh versions), THE COURT JESTER with Danny Kaye, DEAD AGAIN, THE WOMEN, the original INHERIT THE WIND, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (can you tell I'm a sucker for courtroom drama?).

Besides some of the favorites I mentioned, there were others that were mentioned on comments before mine and also after. "Witness for the Prosecution" is definitely my favorite "twist" movie.

I love the movies nearly as much as I love to read (which is a lot given that I'm a bibliophile). I have been guilty in the past of using my bill money to go see a movie. My favorite movies are, in no particular order:

Persuasion
A & E version of Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth)
Gladiator
Dances With Wolves
Troy
Man From Snowy River
Bringing up Baby
Philadelphia Story
The Work and the Glory 1 and 2
The Lord of the Rings--all 3
Star Wars
Hidalgo
The Last Samauri
This is just a few.

I love comedies like Liar liar and As Good As it Gets. And of course I love Romances.... but I'm not picky I will pretty well see anything. The only movies I don't like are really violent slasher movies like Saw and Freddy Cruger types . Otherwise I'm a good movie date!
