  • Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

Congratulations to Susan Andersen and Jayne Ann Krentz for ranking among Amazon.com Editors' Best of 2009 in Romance!

    ELIZABETH DISCOVERS THE ENERGIZER BUNNY

Most of the time I don’t get up to an alarm. (YES!) Does that mean I get enough sleep?

    No such thing.

So I get out of bed, work out to get the blood moving, drink tea and read the NYT to get my adrenaline topped off, and sit down at the computer to write dazzling, compelling, scintillating prose.

    ZZZZZZZZ zzzzzzzzzz ZZZZZZZZ

Clunking sound as my forehead hits the keyboard.

Dang. Must need a kick start.

    Pop a diet coke.

    GUZZLE guzzle GUZZLE

    *burp*

    *ha-RUP*

    *HE-GEEP*

Clunking sound as my forehead hits the keyboard.

Then I hear the sound of the wind swirling around the red rock cliffs and forest in my “front yard.” I go outside, feel the wind lift my hair, breathe in the scent of cedar and distance and time, and energy rushes through me. When I go back inside, I take that energy with me and put it into my writing.

How do you energize yourself when the usual things don’t work?

Cute! I like the imagery here!

What do I do? Same as you from the sounds of it. Coffee or even lively music. Last resort - close my eyes and dream. Once the juices start flowing ... :-) I can start writing!

I like to stand in the sun. I'm solar powered. Ten minutes of rays and everything inside suddenly remembers how to fire on all cylinders.

In the sunless days of winter, I find green tea comes a reasonable second.

Taking a shower will always wake me up, rain or shine.

Go for a walk, rain or shine. The variation in sights, sounds and smells does it every time.

You mean I'm not the only one who clunks on the keyboard? Well, I do do it at the other end of the day. I'm not even fit to get up in the morning. Wish I had some nice fresh air to breathe. Going out and smelling all those exhaust fumes does *not* do the trick. I just get a headached and head back to bed.

Zonk! I've fallen off my computer chair so often I'm wondering if I pinched a nerve somewhere that resulted in my radial nerve palsy on my right side. The doctors never did find out where exactly the injury occurred.

Coffee is the elixer of life. But if coffee isn't doing it, I do about 30 minutes of aerobics then take a cool shower. That usually does the trick.

I role out of bed, walk out into the lighted hall way (dorm living was not invented by non-morning people), go to the restroom, and by the time i get back to my room, I am awake....
And when that fails, I just go the local starbucks and get a hot mocha...yummy...

There's a lovely park in my city that has a walking track that winds it's way through a wooded area. It is well-maintained and approximately a mile in length. I can begin with one thought in mind and have a completely transformed view by the end of the first lap. Nature gives great energy!

I energize myself especially when things don't work out by first always saying a short prayer.

Also, I try to immerse myself in the book I am reading.

Surely, that sets my day on the right track.

Red rock cliffs? Do you live in Arizona part of the year?

As for energizing - I play with my dogs or go ride my horse. Nothing like fresh air to heighten the senses. I feel sorry for those who have to live in big cities!

Sure do. We winter in the red rocks. :)

    Elizabeth,
    Thanks for the answer!
I vacationed in the red rock country many years ago (lord, where does the time go?) - Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona... High desert country is like no where else - there's a stunning awareness yet deep peace that I have never felt before or since.
BTW - love your books. Yours are among the limited few that I read more than once because I enjoy your characters so much.

I used to go down to the Japanese garden in Hilo to walk but... *sigh* Now it's coffee and a teenager with energy to burn that does it.

I submit myself to tickle time, color a picture or go for a walk with my daughters. Kid energy is contagious.

Hmmmm, I never have energy leaks.
oops that is my daughter I'm thinking about.
    hahahahaha
When I need to revive myself a walk outside usually works. Afternoons are the worst for me, Mornings and evenings I can do.
