ELIZABETH MEETS EVIL TWIN

My inspiration is looking for some perspiration.

No, this won’t be a blog about writer’s block. I’ve been fortunate never to encounter that particular beast.

Laziness, now.

Whole ‘nother thing entirely.

It’s spring, dammit. I don’t want to work. I want to—

Go fishing.

Pick roses.

Hike.

Sit on a mesa top.

Sleep in the sun.

Grab Evan and put out a GO AWAY sign.

So I’m going to play hooky.

:-)

What’s your best memory of a hooky kind of day?

My friends and I all decided that we were sick of schoo, so for one day we all piled into my Kia Rio and headed for the beach.
Surf boards were on top of the car and snacks were in the trunk.
We surfed, we tanned, we built a bon fire and roasted marshmellows and hot dogs (not together I promise)and enjoyed not having to do a damn thing.

It was a beautiful fall day and instead of doing what I was supposed to (stitch my boyfriend's pants, doing some household chores and doing an essay for school) I went to the beach with a good book and stayed there 'til I had read the book..

I wore pajamas all day, ate ice cream for breakfast and read two or three good books.

My husband and I took a mental-health-day from work (while the kids still went to school) and played hookey by waking up late, enjoying a cup of coffee and going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and spending a whole day reliving our musical (and not so musical) past...lol.

It was one of the most relaxing and fun days we've managed to get away with.

Well, *I* was always a good girl!!! I didn't play hooky--well, not often.

I think the nicest times were when I just didn't want to prepare for teaching. The woods higher up the hill behind the house called. I'd go wandering and look for fossils of the Jurassic period. I always hoped I'd also lose my headache but I definitely found more fossils that I lost headaches. Up there the air was pretty good still, although you could see a busy highway right on the other side of the valley. (This was in Germany not far from the hill where Barbarossa's dynasty was born.)

When my hubby and I lived still lived in New Jersey (we are now proud to be called Seattlelites), one nice day as he was driving me to work, he just suddenly drove past my office. He kept on driving until we ended up at Seaside Heights - enjoyed the rest of the afternoon, along the beach.

During senior week in high school. I drove an ancient chevy biscayne. Six of us uncool, unpopular girls decided to play hooky. We jumped in my chevy and drove around. Got lost on a reservation and wound up being chased by a lot of cute indian guys in their car. I guess they were playing hooky too! They didn't catch us. My chevy was old but it could move fast. A couple of those girls had the time of their life - which made it worth it for the rest of us. They had never been asked to do something like that.

Ah, high school!

This is mildly embarassing but I'd play hooky to watch marathons of Law and Order.

Oh, college, how I miss thee.

I don't remember the last time I played hooky. I've had weekends off and a vacation or two, but nothing spontaneous like everyone else.

What I would like to do: take a road trip so I can visit the very big mall (including the biggest bookstore I've ever seen) in a city about 4 hours away. Then maybe mini-golf or an amusement park.

If I stayed closer to home, there are many walking trails, a ton of movies in my collection, and I could raid my mum's personal library for great books to read. ;)

The best time I ever had playing hooky was when I lived in Europe. I took a Friday, called in sick to work and flew to Paris for the weekend. I sat in a cafe with a great book and a glass of spectacular wine and enjoyed the day. Sometimes I miss that about Europe, just hopping a plane on an hour's notice and winding up in a another country in less than two hours. *sigh*

Loaded my dog in my truck, drove straight through from California to the rim of the Grand Canyon, hiked along the rim, sat under a tree and breathed deep (this was a long time ago so the air there was still unpolluted). It was the most relaxing two days I ever spent.

At least once or twice a year we drop Mikey off at school and beat feet up to the local botanical garden to wander for an hour or two follow by lunch and an afternoon "nap". :-)

A reminder of why we got married in the first place.

Bailed on work one summer day to take Morine for her first trip to the beach (she was 3). My brother and friends had a rental on the beach which could only be accessed via 4WD. It was low tide. She and my brother made a lighthouse out of sand with a moat and decorated it with rocks, shells and seaglass they had accumulated on a walk earlier. We watched the tide come in and fill the moat. It was a beautiful day.

Rainy day in high school, no tests, generally fed up with life & classmates. Tucked up in my bedroom, rain tapping on my dormer. My tattered copy of Swiss Family Robinson clutched in my hands, I daydreamed myself into their island. Had house all to myself, quiet and private. no annoying siblings, no TV, no chores. Ah, bliss.
30 years later, no dormer, bigger bed, moved on to Donovans and Vanza masters. Screw the chores, I am the adult now. Spend the day in my jammies and with a book in hand. Still bliss. Melanie

Spa day for me! Of course, that would be my home spa.

Those afternoons that my dh comes home early aren't so bad either!

I recently had a deadline for a woven tapestry that was to be sent to an exhibit. The pressure was on! Although it was my piece, it was part of a group project. AND, it was only to be 4"x6"! Sounds like a no brainer - small piece and others expected me to finish along with them. I still found the loopholes - rationalizing that one less contribution wouldn't make a difference and that I didn't like the project (vintage TVs ) in the first place. I managed to find fascinating local thrift shops that had be be visited, a flea market or two, and loads of books that I had to read! Of course, as the submission date loomed closer, I decided I could/should do it (my idea was to do my family TV from the 50's) and worked like a fiend at the last minute. I did finish it in the end and still managed to get to do all the really good stuff!

I haven´t played hookie since I was 14 years old and few of my classmates skipped danish class one day. And that was just one class, not the whole day.

Best memory? I'm not sure but I'm certain it involved saying, "No," and perhaps reading all day.

And, Sirry, I'd love to know if you've already had your sixteenth Birthday:)

Seriously, though, I've never had much time to play hooky. Even when I'm on vacation I tend to work each day, although I do keep the sessions short.

Oh, yeah. I´ll be 39 this year so it´s been a while since I was a sweet sixteen. Ahh, those were the days.

A couple of my girlfriends and I happened upon a great deal at a local resort/spa. They were low on bookings and trying to fill up the resort. We had a great time getting massages, pedicures, manicures, etc while nibbling on a fruit and cheese tray and drinking a fine wine.

A great time had by all!

Sirry and I are both blessed or cursed with a too-active sense of responsibility. I never skipped school and was one of those classmates you loved to hate, a gunner on the front row that always wrecked the grading curve. About the best kind of hooky day for me was when I was staying home with kids and reading (usually one of Ms Ann's books) instead of starting dinner on time. The kids had to call my name several times before I would hear them talking to me because the book was so engrossing. Thanks, Ms. Ann!

kathyk,

I was one of those front row, curve-wrecking, no-hookey student myself. Hookey was a pleasure that came to me late in life.

I don't do hookey. As much as I'd love to, I had responsibility hammered into me and I can't take a day off without a reason.

How depressing is that? I think I may have to work on it.

You mean there are days when I'm supposed to WORK?

I play hooky at least once a day, whether it's to escape into the pen bliss of Office Depot or to up my stats on FreeCell or to catch up on all those "ER" reruns I missed.

:-) Seriously, I work every single day and could use some more hooky. Okay, written that way it sounds like maybe it should be illegal ;-)
