Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

A Quill Quickie

What are three indispensable items you always carry in your handbag? (Or in your backpack, briefcase, etc.?)

Jayne:

1) Credit card for emergency shopping.
2) Backup credit card in case first fails.
3) Money in case first two don't work.

Elizabeth:

1) wallet

2) pen
3) book to read while waiting for whatever

Suzanne:

1. My favorite pen and a bunch of orange 5 X 6 note cards (You never know when a brilliant idea will strike.)
2. Kleenex (It's spring; therefore, it's allergy season.)
3. Sunglasses (Hope springs eternal that I might actually need them!)

Inquiring Minds want to know as we head into the weekend: What are three indispensable items in your handbag/backpack/briefcase?

2) Tissues AND handkerchief (no, it's not like a belt & suspenders male) I use the hanky to clean my glasses, and you may need extra tissues if no TP.
3)immodium tablets because you just never know when you'll pay for that Mexican meal you just ate
4)pen and paper... because you just never know when you may find yourself waiting at a roadside rest area......
5) every Sunday I stock up on breath mints to feed kids and spouse during the sermon.

I thought for a minute there that Becca said "Wallet, GUN, sunglasses." What are you, Becca, some sort of romantic-suspense heroine?

Honestly, I think 'keys' can be taken as read: after all, you always need to be able to get back into your dwelling. I am inclined to think that these days, 'credit card(s)' can almost be taken as read, too; very few people do not use them at all, and if you are somebody who doesn't, you would have to substitute 'cash' in that slot.
So, leaving out the universal keys and credit card, I list as essential:

pens and paper
small torch
10x jeweller's loupe

In fact, the little bag that contains the loupe and mini-torch also contains a tiny screwdriver, spare screws for spectacles, spare batteries for the torch, a measuring tape, and my Swiss Army knife. All are essential. I have to remember to remove the Swiss Army Knife these days when flying, and pack it in my suitcase, which is a bore.
I nearly always carry a camera, too.
Isn't it interesting that nobody has mentioned make-up? Most adult women for most of the 20th century would have listed 'lipstick' at least, and in the 1950s-70s most women carried a little bag with a whole range of war-paint, from foundation to eyeshadow and mascara.

Several people have mentioned sunglasses, which makes sense, of course, if you don't wear glasses otherwise.

As a full-time spectacle-wearer, I prefer to be able to face all eventualities in the same pair of specs, so mine are tri-focal varifocals, so that I can cope with distance, middle distance and close vision (though I do take them off for very close work, such as peering at something through that jeweller's loupe), and photochromic, so that they turn themselves into sunglasses as required, when the light is bright.
:-)

I only carry a bag to work, not anywhere else, so my don't leave home without it list is pretty simple:

Keys
Wallet
Sunnies

LOL, Jayne -- I LOVE your purse (and have to admit to having the exact same thing, along with my not-so-secret pocket of extra cash for that dress I HAVE to have).

Sue and Elizabeth--how I long to be that work committed ;-) Actually, I do have a notebook in my purse for days when inspiration hits.

Unfortunately, it's covered, back to front, with the drawings of my children. My son, the ever creative soul, drew his mother and father swimming the other day--and put great white sharks beneath them.

I think he disagreed with the meatloaf we had for dinner.

If you don't count ID (because these days you can't go anywhere without it) I always have:

1) a book or two with a piece of scratch paper for a bookmark(or three if I'm going to the doctor's office)
2) a roll of Tums
3) a pen or pencil (in case I discover something to buy later when I have money. I write it on the bookmark.)

Plus I usually have my husband's insulin and needles if we're going out together. He bought a nice black 'manly' carrying case for them, yet 9 times out of 10 it winds up in my purse.

3 needlepoint (cause you never know when you'll need something to do.)

I only take a book if I'm going somewhere I can be "lost", since I tend to ignore all stimuli when reading.
