Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

Views from the readers' trenches

I have been reading for too many years to count. And I am the kind of reader that always has to have at least 10 books in the house that I have not read just to keep me company. I am lucky that I have been part of the publishing industry so that I can find out about new authors and new books that are coming into the stores. My work began as a bookseller (independent and then Waldenbooks) including five years as spokesperson on the romance book industry for Waldenbooks. And one of my greatest joys was opening a box of books of new titles fresh off the press.

I now work for myself as a consultant to publishers and authors and teach at a local community college on the publishing industry. I am always interested in how the romance genre continues to change but still seems to publish stories that are about love and relationships.

Publishers introduce new authors and/or new series such as “Bombshell” or “Next”. New stories by favorite authors also bring me back to the bookstore. I am sure that I still miss out on other new books if I just knew about them. This idea brought me to ask myself, how do I find out about books? New Authors? Here is what I do to stay current:

  • Sign up on author’s web-site to get news from them about their upcoming books.
  • Sign up on publishers web-sites for their monthly newsletters.
  • Sign up on internet bookstore or web-sites such as www.bookreporter.com for information on upcoming titles.
  • Check out readings in the local newspapers for authors and books of interest and try to attend.
  • Read and look through Romantic Times Book Club magazine which is found in bookstores.
  • Check out the Romance Writers of America Web-site for their yearly award nominees and winners.
  • Visit the local bookstores and look at what’s new in romance fiction. And there are often bookseller comments notes that are taped on the shelves, providing the reader information about a writer’s voice and storytelling abilities.
  • Sometimes, publishers will announce on the front cover or back cover copy that this is the debut book for the author.
  • Subscribe to the weekly email from Foreword Magazine. They review books and also give out yearly awards for books from small press publishers and self-published authors.
  • Talk with other readers for those wonderful word of mouth recommendations.

What internet sites, bookstore web-sites, and author blogs do you use to help find new books and authors?

WriterSpace.com is a great place to see books out this month, if the links are used you may also be able to see the publishers upcoming works. Barnes & Noble has a section for Upcoming releases under the type of books you read. Also, storyforu.com has some nice options.

Writerspace.com, Barnes and Nobles.com, Amazon.com, writers blogs, Romance Authors Page.com,Harperscollins.com, Penguinusa.com and other publishing.coms, check out new writers blogs that are recommended by other writers or publishers. Also Waldenbooks stores have upcoming books and reviews they publish and put in stores every month. This is how I learn about new authors and books that my old favs are putting out this year. One other good source is fantasticfiction.co.uk who have over 50,000 authors to check on.

I also recommend some of the delphiforums on romance, especially The Lunatic Cafe for Romance Readers and Romance Books at BellaOnline.

Though I have quite enough books to last me for at least the next 100 years (only slightly exaggerating), I still find the odd author that I want to add to that. I got into one author's blog. She'd been writing for some years but I began to get her backlist. Then I noticed that "The Quills" have a blog: I was on the newsletter list of three of them and had also read books by the fourth.

About the only avenue I haven't explored is Foreword Magazine, but lots of other book sites. For the last 10 years I haven't had much money since I'm on disability. So I went looking all over for books to win and got to read new authors that way as well. I have 5 or 6 blogs that I go to regularly now and learn there about books others enjoy but I haven't joined any discussion boards.

Actually, I'm going to be judging some novellas for some awards this year. I have read nothing by any of these authors. So that might be a new avenue.

Thanks for coming to give us some more hints as to where to find information about new authors and books.

I find browsing through the dorothyL board great for getting a feel for what others are reading. And authors, too, post to this board. The discussions can range from mundane to funny to thought-provoking.

You can also subscribe to Romantic Times Book Club Magazine; it also has a Web site. Each year the magazine sponsors a readers/writers/sellers, etc. convention. I've never been, but I bet it's a blast.

I'm on so many author's on-line mailing lists I can't begin to name them all. As soon as I find an author that I enjoy I sign-up on their websites for their newsletters, etc. I also pay attention here at RWQ...lol. Border's e-mails me frequently and keeps me updated on everything else.

I got most of my untried authors from other posters on Ms Ann's board, so losing it hurt in more ways than the obvious. I don't believe I've tried a new author in a long time, just purchased the new releases of those I already read as they come.

What internet time I get is already stretched to two forums, this blog and two email inboxes. I simply don't have time to actively surf for new books.

NB: I lie! I bought A Grave Mistake last week, and I've never read any of Stella's books before. I haven't read it yet, but it gets longing glances every time I walk past. *g*
