Things I Enjoyed Most at the RT Convention.

I'm a dud. Really.
While everyone else is charging from one event to the next, I'm...
Yeah. Yawning. Sleeping. It's sad. And embarrassing.

RT puts on this great convention full of parties and activities and I usually spend a lot of time hiding in my room, napping, or just putting my feet up.
You'd think I was pushing 85 instead of closing in on 50 with my lack of energy.

My only excuse is that it's an intimidating thing to see so many people who know your name, when you can't pull a single name, not even your own, out of your tired brain. I see people heading for me, and I feel like...
That way, I can't offend anyone with my terrible memory.

Once long ago at a forgotten convention I saw a button that said, "That's Okay. I don't remember your name either." I need one of those!
There seems to be some mental block for me when it comes to crowds and loud noises.
But hey, I'm a writer.

I spend a lot of time in noise of my own making - like my music choices and the sounds of my dogs snoring. It's no wonder the chaos gets to me.
So why do I attend the huge, wild, bursting-with-non-stop-activities RT Convention?

Here are just a few of the things I really enjoy.

This is me with the lovely Rosemary Potter
(in pink) of Rosemary's Romance Books
in Brisbane Australia. Rosemary does an incredible
job of selling our books, and she's so fun and
enthusiastic that seeing her is a major lure.
It feels like I've know Rosemary forever, and now she's
not just a bookseller to me. She's a friend.

Since Rosemary isn't the only Aussie to make the long trek over for the festivities, Kathryn Falk hosted a party for them, and I was honored with an invitation. (It was a morning party, so I was actually awake and happy to attend!) So fun!
The Aussie booksellers are generous, kind, and hilarious, and they bring the authors those delicious chocolate TimTams! Great nibbles for the flight home.

Here's a group of us posing for the camera at the Australian gathering.

That's me in white, sans hat. Behind me is the super sweet and very talented author Karen Kelley, then the incomparable Katheryn Falk of RT fame, followed by Rosemary Potter, then good friend and amazing author Rosemary Laurey, and another Aussie bookseller whose name I have shamefully forgotten already. (See above paragraph about my awful memory!)
Mugging for the camera is a given if you attend the convention. At times, my mouth will begin to twitch from so much smiling!

Now, if you're wondering about those bright pink hats the ladies are wearing, or the festive yellow shirts, thank my best friend Dianne Castell. She's a writing dynamo who passes out goodies from one end of the convention to the other. Dianne, Rosemary Laurey and Karen Kelley have an incredible anthology titled Texas Bad Boys coming out in September, thus the cowboy hats, and the shirts with the cover printed on them. (It is a smashing cover, by the way.)

And see the water bottles in Dianne's hands? Ha! You should have seen her room! Boxes of water bottles filled it. I doubt anyone left Daytona without a Texas Bad Boy water bottle.

(This is Dianne handing out more water bottles,
and Rosemary is thinking of other people
they can give them to. )

Hanging out with author friends who I don't get to see as often as I see Dianne is the biggest plus. Because writing is a solitary biz, we all chat online a lot, but it's so nice to sit down face-to-face and catch up on who's publishing what and where, and when the books will be out.
I get such a kick out of my friends, how different they are from me, and how alike they are.

One way we differ is that that most of my friends
have a lot more energy than I do! Here's a photo
of good friends LuAnn McLane and
Janice Maynard snuggled up to a cover
model at one of the parties.
Go ladies, go!
I think this particular party was the Fairy Ball - see
LuAnn's tiara?

Here we are at breakfast on the patio, with the surf behind us, dining with some of those lovely Aussie booksellers and a few of my published friends.

In the first photo, the yellow shirt is Rosemary Laurey, and next to her is LuAnn McLane. That's me in black. Yeah, I'm usually in black. My wardrobe mostly consists of black, white and blue jean.
In the second photo, the yellow shirt is Dianne Castell and behind her is Janice Maynard, and then Karen Kelley.
The rest of the smiling faces are Aussie booksellers.

The booksigning, which lasted 4 1/2 hours, afforded another opportunity to visit with reading and writing friends, and then Dianne and I headed home. Traveling with Dianne is wonderful. We get along so well and usually keep each other laughing.

Did I mention the convention was in Daytona Beach this year?

I left the cool rainy days of Ohio for sunshine, surf and sand. It was heavenly. I got out for several walks in the early evening, and when I was in my room, I kept the curtains and balcony door open to relish the fresh air and sounds of the ocean.

I think I'll leave you with an image of the beach from my room.
The sunset and sunrise was truly lovely.

So you see, even as a non-partier, I had a great time at the RT bash. There's always something for everyone, even a party pooper like me.

What part of the convention do you love best?
(If you've never been, what part do you think you'd love best?)
Meeting authors.
Meeting online friends.
Free books! (Did I mention that a lot of the publishers have small signings where their author autograph free books for you?)
Parties, parties and more parties.
Cover models.
Workshops on everything from writing to psychic talents and more.
Promo material goodies.
Location - like the beach at Daytona.

Whatever your choices, every reader and writer should attend an RT Convention. It's an experience you won't soon forget!

Hugs to everyone!

Lori, you sound a *lot* like me. I like to call myself the original party pooper LOL. My friends know not to bring me along if they are looking to be out partying all night. I am truly an introvert. After being around even close friends for a long time, I need some down time by myself to recover.

Aside from that, partying and drinking are not my idea of a good time. I do like to dance periodically. I am a closet Disco lover:) And I love to sing, so I could probably be convinced to Karaoke in a group (though I'd get too nervous alone). That is the extent of my "partying."

That said, I think my favorite part of a convention like RT would be meeting all the online friends I've made. It would be a blast getting to talk to everyone in person:)

And the location doesn't hurt. I just might get distracted taking photos of the scenery LOL! I can spend hours doing that:)

That's Okay. I don't remember your name either.

LOL - I need to get one of those! You know, years ago that's why my first graders had nametags on their desks. Don't let anyone tell you it's to help them learn penmanship. It's all about the name.

Thanks for the insights and photos Lori.

ps - Cool quill signing your name.

Hey Lynn, a lovely reader friend - the same who made the header for my website - created that quill for me. And considering this is the quills... It seemed appropriate. ;-)

Michelle, the problem with meeting online friends is that they have real names. LOL. Potersnithy (I made that up) might actually be named Pam. Who the heck is Pam? Where is Potersnithy?
The online names sometimes crack me up. Online, I'm lorifoster. Soooo easy.
It definitely is fun to put faces to online personalities.
I can't party because I'm ready for bed no later than 10pm and up by 5am. That's my schedule, and no matter what, the old inner clock won't let it go. :::sigh::::

Hope you're all having a lovely day!

How about all of the above? No matter where the convention is I love meeting new people, on-line friends and learning more and more about the craft!

Lori--we'll have to go to a convention together wearing the same tag: Don't worry, I don't remember your name either!

BWHAHAHAH

I sooo resemble that remark!

Elizabeth, maybe I'll add that button to my cafepress store. I'll make a fortune! :-D

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has trouble with names. My hubby remembers everyone forever. It's disgusting. ;-)

Hi, Lori! What a great report on the RT convention. I loved seeing all the pix.

I know the feeling about not remembering names--it takes me forever to get the right names attached to the right faces. Once I tried this technique that my dad told me about, where you had to think up a mental image to associate with the person's face to remind you of their name. Sigh. I don't do that anymore.

No, don't ask. :)

Saralee. I'm asking. C'mon, give!

You know, my mom used to do that. Once I was trying to think of the name of the woman who played Archie's wife. We tried and tried to remember, but couldn't. Then she called me and said, "I stapled her name to my pants. It's Maureen Stapleton."
I had NO idea what the heck she was talking about. LOL.
But it always worked for her. Course, she wasn't meeting (or RE-meeting) a hundred people at a time.

:-)

LOL Lori! That's true about the online names. I've started using MichelleB more often than my other screen names that had nothing to do with my real name. I've met online friends before and yes it is quite interesting.

Thanks, Lori, for the great update on the RT Conference. I managed to go to the one that was closest to me--in Toronto 1999. I knew that I would not be doing much partying since I was already on disability at that time and had been off work for 4 years. At first I just badly wanted to go but there was no way I could afford it. So I wrote RT and asked if I could just attend a few functions. They were kind enough to let me in for the price of a volunteer.

I'm so happy I was able to experience it even without the parties since I'm definitely not a party animal aside from my illness. I just enjoyed the free books, meeting authors and other readers, the great food and a few of the discussions. It was time and money well spent. Of course I went to the Cover Model Pageant where a Canadian College football player won. And stayed a little later to translate for one of the German contestants who was interviewed by one of Toronto's TV stations. I also attended the award luncheon where Suzanne Brockmann won at least 2 awards. I'm still in contact with some of the writer-friends I made, especially with Suzanne who was there with her mother. I've met her, her husband and her childhood friend at signings in Detroit and Hamilton, ON since.

It's a great experience and I'm glad I got up the nerve to ask if there was a cheaper package for someone like me. RT was great for that. I still think of it often. After all, you can hardly not think of it with the magazine always full of news about the next RT Conference. If I ever get another conference close enough, I'll certainly try to get there. It might be a little difficult because I no longer have a car. But I can always dream...

Michelle, I'm glad you're using a recognizable name now, but then I recognized you from your photo too. It's soooo nice when someone looks like her photo. Curse all Glamor shots. They confused the begeebers out of moi!

Ranurgis, I wish you could have heard Kate Duffy's short speech on RT at the Award's Luncheon. She has an incredible way with words, and said it best. The gist: A good review with RT helps a writer; A bad review with RT helps a writer; any mention in RT helps a writer.

RT started showcasing authors back when readers (myself included) still thought they fell from heaven. RT has heralded them when others thought it very in vogue to trash them at every chance.
Argh, I'm half asleep with puffy eyes here at 5:05 am, so I hope I'm making sense and not typing too many typos. I'm hoping to get through my emails and stuff early, so I can kick some major butt on writing my book. Gotta get that puppy finished, and along the way, keep hoping that it doesn't suck raw eggs.

At any rate, I'm not surprised RT found a way for you attend the convention. The people running it (the mag and the con) have hearts of gold. Truly wonderful, wonderful people!
HUGS!

Hi Quillers. Bookstoredeb from SR popping in to say hi and say I am enjoying the dueling blogs of you wonderful writers. After not visiting blogland for way to long, it's a hoot to come back to these entries. Way to go girls.

I've never been to a conference, RT or RWA but I am going to RWA this July and I can't wait! I love reading about everyone's experiences there.

As you can probably tell from the name, I do work as a bookseller, and if you plan to be in Atlanta I would love the chance to meet you. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Have a great day all!

Lori, I attended the RT Convention which is my fourth. I enjoy all aspects of the convention. I make a lot of contacts with authors with which I correspond. I am a bookseller so there are great meetings and get togethers for us.
You were nice enough to to sign some name plates for me which I have put in my new books and still have some for later books. Thank you so much. My readers appreciate the special touch.

I have met booksellers at these meeting and have become friends that look forward until next year

Keep up the great books!!
