When Readers and Writers Unite!

Since I forgot to put my name on my last blog, please note, this is LORI trying to find something worthy of a Quill blog ...
- and not having much luck.

I had planned to discuss Alpha males, and what I consider some major misconceptions. But alas, I'm behind on... everything. My book ( due today!) and appointments, which I've rescheduled twice, and life, which is getting away from me - all have me crunched for time. So Alphas will have to wait until next time.

Instead, I've decided to do a recap of a great weekend spent with readers and authors at my and Dianne Castell's annual event.
Maybe y'all can give me some ideas for next year, and you might even consider joining us in 07!

On Friday June 9th through Sunday June 11th, readers and writers came together for the 2nd annual Lori Foster & Dianne Castell "Reader & Author Get Together." (Catchy name, right?) I'm still exhausted, but wow, what a great time we all had!

In case you're unfamiliar with the incomparable Dianne Castell, this is her with her snazzy pink promo hat, inspired by her newest novella in the "Texas Bad Boys" anthology.
Dianne passed out the hats to a lot of people, which made for a colorful weekend.

Dianne and I host the event here in Ohio as a hearty THANK YOU.
It's our small way to give a little back to the readers who have given us and other writers so much support, friendship and enjoyment. Our annual Get Together launched in 05. When Dianne and I planned that first event, we kept thinking that if we got 20 readers to show up, we'd be happy.

We got 100 - and were thrilled!

For the 06 event, we grew a little... by 50 people!

The photo below is of a portion of the attendees, probably during a raffle.

We joined together in the Marriott in West Chester, Ohio to talk, talk, talk.
(Dianne and I are a wee bit chatty.)

Our focus for this event is to keep it fun, to provide a casual atomosphere where readers and authors can get to know each other better, where we can put faces to online names, and share the love of reading. Attendees wear jeans (or whatever they're most comfortable in) and it's all very unstructured for the most part, providing more time for everyone to mingle.

We had a rotating author lunch where authors switched tables every 10 minutes so readers had a chance to chat with them all.
We had a wonderful volunteer who read Taro cards - and told me some very interesting things! We had field trips, photo ops, critiques, prizes, an editor and an agent, and a bookfair hosted by B&N and one of my best, long-time friends, Linda Keller.

All for a registration fee of $35 - to cover the costs of meals.

This part cracks me up, but we also had James Denton's travelling pants! Until last weekend, I'd never heard of it, but apparently a radio DJ won James Denton's pants in an auction. She had them framed and now loans them out to groups. LuAnn McLane brought them, and showed me how the back of the frame has a little spot open so you can "feel" the jeans.

Here we are, paying appropriate tribute to the famous pants.

The donated author, reader and publisher baskets were the highlight of the event. Proceeds from the event go to the local Battered Women's Shelter.
This year, we made over $2500 on raffles alone, with more $ coming from the bookfair!

That's Christy above, our official registration volunteer, helping out with the raffle. Christy and her mom, Cheryl, keep everything in line and moving smoothly. We'd be lost without them.

The gal below is none other than LadyB, our lovely volunteer in charge of organizing and distributing raffle prizes. LadyB makes the raffling of the baskets feel more like a Las Vegas show!

This year, 45 authors showed up offering critiques for new or unpublished authors, amazing raffle baskets, fun promo items, lots of smiles, and an enthusiastic desire to show the readers just how appreciated they are!

Dianne and I flew in an agent and editor. The agent was Emily Sylvan Kim (but my photo of her didn't turn out - bummer).
The editor is Cindy Hwang, of Berkley.

To the left is amazing author Erin McCarthy, with Cindy Hwang next, and that's me grinning like a fool on the end.

Did you note my shirt? Each year we have items - T-shirts of all styles, mugs, mouse pads, calendars, journals, etc... specially made for the event with images of attending authors' bookcovers on the front and urls on the back. The itms are very affordable (available at www.cafepress.com/lorifoster ), and proceeds from the sales go to the Battered Women's Shelter.

My husband wore a shirt that said, "I sleep with a famous author." But he's a real joker, so whenever someone commented on it, he mentioned Stephen King, not me.

This is the dear husband standing between Johnny Depp and Alan Jackson.

Below: Dianne and I schmoozed with Johnny and Alan too!

Many of my "Bookjunkie" friends attended.
(My yahoo email loop is LoriFosterBookjunkies)

Saturday night, authors Dianne Castell and LuAnn McLane organized a fieldtrip to a local nightclub for some line dancing. I, being an old fuddy duddy, headed home to bed so I could be back bright and early Sunday morning for breakfast with everyone.

But the brave ventured out - and reported a rompin' good time!

Above - whoopin' it up!

Below - my sedate (and tired) group after a delish breakfast the next morning.

Dianne and I hope to have the event every year and we'd love suggestions from everyone.

If you were to attend our event, what would you most like to do there?

So many of the readers commented on how nice and "down to earth" the authors are, and the authors raved over how friendly and happy the readers are. Sort of a big "love and respect" fest, huh?

Have you been to any events where you met an author, and were surprised at how much you had in common?

For the raffle baskets I donated, I included a foreign copy of "Say No To Joe?" (showing Joe nekkid on the cover!) and some arcs of my upcoming single title, "Murphy's Law." What would you most like to find your favorite author's basket? An out of print book, or a not-yet-released title?

If you could get your photo taken with any author, who would it be?

My husband's shirt was such a hit, we're planning a whole section of shirts for husbands, so we can we make even more in proceeds for our charities. Upcoming sayings will be: "I am the inspiration," "Not on the cover, but between the pages," "Wanna do some research?" and a few others.

Can you think of a really catchy saying to go on a writer's or reader's shirt?

(One of the shirts I wore said: "Be careful or I'll kill you in a book.")

It really was a wonderful time, and I'm already looking forward to next year. We made the Battered Women's Shelter our main focus, but we also collected for a special project of mine, "Eyes for Josh," and for the troops. Everyone was generous beyond belief.

If it weren't for the incredible volunteers - too many to name - Dianne and I would never be able to do this. A big THANK YOU to them all, and a special hearty THANK YOU to Linda Keller who organized the bookfair of 47 authors. Amazing women, all of them.

That's it from me. I have to finish my book now. Thank God for email and an editor who doesn't mind technology, saving me the extra days it would have taken to snail mail this puppy!

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

Great blog Lori! I know about being behind. I'm supposed to be packing this week (I'm moving over the next month and a half) but I have yet to really pack a darn thing. Oh well...

I love seeing all your pics! Johnny Depp with that pink cowboy hat is hilarious!!

I wish I could have been at the get together. It would have been great to meet you all in person:) Hopefully I'll be able to make the trek from California to Ohio one of these years!

As for what I'd want to do at the event, I think I'd really just like to have time to socialize with everyone, readers and authors included. I think I'd feel more comfortable just chatting than doing formal events. I met Lucy Monroe along with Kelley when she was out here for Celebrate Romance (and her vacation) and it was great to just sit and chat!

Some down/relaxation time is good, but then Dianne might actually have to SIT LOL! From the stories I've heard, she was on the go the entire weekend.

I'm not really sure what goes on, but maybe a big ice breaker game or something the first night/day so that everyone gets to meet everyone or at least more than just a few they may know already.

I'm not sure I'll be much help on the rest of your questions. I'm happy just to win anything usually LOL. I get a thrill just knowing I was drawn as the winner:)

As for photos with people, I hate photos of me. I'd rather be behind the camera!

Your hubby's shirt is great! I'm not very good at slogan's and T-Shirt sayings. One thing I just read at Stacy's blog cracked me up though. She was writing about what she wants in a romance novel and she wrote:
"It's the sighs and not the size that matters most."

I thought that was great!!

Anyway, hope your book is progressing. I am off to bed (yes, at 5:28am) as I haven't slept in 22 hours now. I'll check back later!

I'll just have to answer in sessions. Another deadline beleaguered crazy woman here.

Wonderful blog, Lori. You float in like sunny air and I love to read your stuff.

Wish I'd been at that weekend event. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Love Allan's comment about his famous author shirt. Only a man with a solid ego and a big sense of humor would start talking about Stephen King!

If I was at the weekend, what would I most like to see? I think you've got it covered but a live performance of Riverdance would be okay as a little tossaway!

WOW, Lori, what an incredible amount of energy it must take to do your reader-author weekend!

I have a sign posted above my computer that says: DEADLINES AMUSE ME! Actually I'm on a tight deadline, too, and I don't think they're all that funny or amusing! :-)

Lori - Great blog! I have to say that the get-together sposored by you and Dianne is one of the most fun events on my calendar. I loved having the chance to meet and get to know readers and even other authors.

Next year can't get here soon enough. I have a couple of nice pictures of Emily if you want them... just let me know, and I'll e-mail them to you.

We're off to an out of town wedding this weekend, so I'm working on a suitcase. :)

Oh, Lori! Can I come next year? How do your readers find out when/where? It sounds like such a great time, and from the photos, everyone is having a blast.

I would like to sit with your readers and just dish romance. When I go to professional conferences, I mostly talk with writers, so we talk writing. But I love hearing what everyone reads, why, when, with whom...

Your husband's Tshirt is great. My husband gets so much harassment from friends and coworkers because of what I do. They want to know if it's true about husbands of romance readers being happier with the "romance" in their lives. My husband blushing is a thing to behold.

What does your Tshirt say in the pic where you're cozying up to Johnny and Alan, Lori?

And, btw, Janice Maynard and you are two of the nicest chicks I've met. Don't try to deny it.

The weekend really is a blast. You have fun the minute you walk into the Marriott until you leave. I was laughing so hard at times I was crying.

I sat with Cindy during the lunch and had a nice conversation about you Suzanne. :) We also found out we share a love of Clay Aiken too. :)

We also have a used book trade, where the books must be at least a year old, so as not to hurt current sales. Whatever we have left over is donated, this year Dianne took them to some area nursing homes. Next year I am going to add used dvds to the trade.

Erin McCarthy and I also hold games on Friday night, which includes author bingo, how much do you know your author, and a pin game where if you say the word Read you have to give up the pin. I was told the word was evil so I knew it was the perfect one. :)
Next year I am thinking of a scavenger hunt. Then on Friday night, one of the attendees gave line-dancing lessons which was where I learned I had 3 left feet. :)

The author breakfast was fun, this year I signed up for Sarah McCarty's, last year it was with Dianne. :)

The Marriott also does a fabulous job. The people who work there are friendly and always greet you whether you come in from outside or just coming from the elevators.

I cannot wait until next year's get together. :)

It looked like such a fun time, I can not wait to go next year! I have an eye on a couple shirts and a messenger bag they are on my birthday list.
One of the questions was if the reader would want an out of print or an up and coming-Both! LOL! Either. That's like choosing between two favorite chocolates, no fair.
Knowing how tough it is to hunt down Mr. November particularly- that would have been an awesome basket, but since I have the whole collection something coming out would be a treasure that I would have been sneaking peeks and putting dollars down for! LOL. I truly look forward to next year, it gives me time to plan....

Back when I was a junior in college, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Elizabeth Lowell hadn't sold a book yet, I was a member of my school's G.E. COLLEGE BOWL team (undefeated, by the way!). Our first time in NYC, we were invited to a dinner party given by an important alum. I found myself seated across from Jack Schaefer, the author of SHANE (first author I ever met!) and we found we shared a love of the writing of Wilbur Daniel Steele (whom nobody read any more) and J.R.R. Tolkien (whom nobody had started reading yet).

ermpy -- Elizabeth's readers may prefer Yanni.

I'm so happy with the book, but I know the last two chapters - 40 pages or so - that I wrote in one day, probably need some work. LOL.

But for now... (can I say it again?) it's DONE! :-D

So... let me lookie at these lovely responses from last to first.
Deb, hah! Oh, darlin', I am SOOOO not beautiful. Seriously. But thank you anyhoo. It's a nice thing to hear every now and again.

Yes, I wish you could have come to the event. Same time, same bat station, next year. That is, second weekend in June, West Chester Ohio. Be there or be square.

Anyone who wants to be on the email list is welcome, just so long as you realize that we are a chatty bunch, and yes, I'm mucho chattier when I'm not at the end of a book. Yes, I have met some authors--some here in London, ON which might be close enough to West Chester. I really need a map at the moment. I doubt it would come up on the globe which is the only map of any kind I have handy. I've been to Cleveland and it took about 4 hours of driving. Problem is, I no longer have a car. Some of the authors I'd like to meet are right here on this blog. But there are others as well. In 1999 at the RT Convention in Toronto, I first met Suzanne Brockmann with her mother. We've been friends ever since though it's hard for me to get to her events. I also met other authors, who, alas, no longer seem to be writing. Some of them have changed names as I just recently discovered. But it's fun meeting any author. Getting books is a bonus whether they be out of print or ARCs.

Whatever made you think you had nothing to blog about? I love that you give to charity. That's where some of my things are going too. However, I do need money myself. So what I can give to charity I will. What might fetch me more and is not as necessary as a charitable donation, I'll sell. In every city there are enough people who have nothing. One here is called "My Sister's Place" for women who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness. This place at least provides somewhere that they can rest for the day, take a bath, get some different clothes. Then, if they are staying with a working friend they go "home" in the late afternoon.

Unfortunately, one of our women's shelters has impossible rules. When I had to move last year, I wanted to give them a whole box full of untouched Avon products in sealed containers, just not in boxes. Because they weren't in boxes, they were rejected and my nephew decided, as far as I know, to just put them in the garbage. I knew someone else who would have gladly taken these items and begged him to give them to this friend. But no. About $200 worth of bath oil, cosmetics, etc. had to be thrown out. C'est la vie. I grew up having nothing. We were lucky enough to get CARE packages from Ann Arbor, MI while we lived in post-War Germany. I can never forget these people and there were many more like these who helped other Europeans survive. My younger siblings don't know what it was like. I truly thank God from the bottom of my heart that he prompted people to care for those who were called enemies just a year or two before. We still correspond with our couple and at least 2 of their 4 daughters and see them after almost 60 years.

Cathie Linz - wow, you'd be a great addition. :-) We'd love to have you there. Please do consider coming next year. We just might have Cindy again, since she was so easy, accomodating, and everyone loved her.

Lori M., we *need* to get you there! I've known you forever on the boards, and yet haven't met you in person. We gotta fix that!

BadBarb, I tried to smoozle Suzanne into coming this year, but she was under deadline. Next year we'll try to talk her into it again. Did you realize we had people from Florida and Texas that came too!? LOL.

Stacy, we're keeping the rotating authors for sure, but we might change it to a morning thing, instead of during lunch. Dianne and I have to go over all the suggestions when we find the time. Soon, I hope. I want to get back to the Marriott (now that I've finished my book) to see if we can hammer out a good deal.

Happy Saturday everyone!

ranurgis, very touching post. Yes, there have been years where Allen and I couldn't donate as much or as often. We always try to do as much as we can. We believe in good karma, feel great about trying to help others, and feel a responsibility to do what we can.
After my mother was in Hospice, they became a monthly charity for us. Angels on earth, that's what they are.
Anything to do with children will prompt us to generosity. We don't limit ourselves to organizations, but like to give anonymous gifts within the community when we see someone in need. Few things can make me feel better, so I guess in a way they're selfish acts on our parts.
I have a very difficult time turning a blind eye.

Suzanne Brockmann would be a wonderful author for any reader to meet. She has so much energy and enthusiasm for *everything.* I don't know her well, but I adore seeing her in action. I'm in awe of her, truth be told. :-)

It's so funny to me how the Get Together has taken on a life of its own. Long before it's here, everyone is geared up, and long after it's over, everyone is still talking. I love it.

Hi Lori. The get together sounds wonderful. I had been invited to come this year by one of our customers at our bookstore. Not sure if she even made it there this year. Unfortunately I had to pass. Getting off work on a Friday is almost impossible, not to mention that the 9th was my DH's birthday. I hated to leave him on his birthday but he said he didn't care, so maybe next year.

I'm going to RWA in Atlanta this year and trying to save all my pennies for that too. Know next year I won't be going so maybe I can come to yours. I live in KY, and my oldest son lives up near Cincinnati so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch for me to travel. Hoping I get to meet some of you wonderful ladies in Atlanta!

The t-shirts sounds awesome. I can just see my DH in one. :-)

The raffles and things sound so awesome, and the rotating authors sounds fabulous! The more I think about it, the more I want to come! lol

I like the bit about meeting authors. I’ve known more than my fair share since I was 19 and freshly married. A friend of ours was a sci/fi writer, but he never would tell us what his pen name was. Several years later - new DH - HE was the writer. He wrote several how-to-do-it books: build houses, boats, and more esoteric things. And scads of articles for a variety of magazines. In the town where we lived [rural Alaska] there was another writer, a man who’d done scripts for Star Trek and got so burned out by the whole experience he changed his name and moved as far from Hollywood as he could get and still be in the US, more or less. Two of my college lit instructors are published writers, and one of them was sooo intense [and really excellent] at his lecturing that he once had a classroom full of macho redneck types nearly coming to blows with each other over whether or not some of the characters in the Iliad and the Odyssey were gay or not! You’d have thought it was yesterday’s headlines rather than epic poetry.

One of my favorite memories is of a talk given by James Michener. He’d been in Alaska doing research for his book, and at the end decided that the best way to pay back Alaskans for all the help and friendliness they’d shown was to do a series of lectures in strategic parts of the state. He talked for a couple hours and answered questions, then somehow the subject of being a writer’s spouse came up. During the course of answering that, he made a comment about how of course one chose one’s spouse from a church or other socially acceptable organization, that he’d NEVER chose a wife from among any women he’d met in a bar. Total silence from 300+ people. I don’t think anyone ever told him just how very many couples there had met in bars... over a third of the ones in attendance that I knew of for sure, most likely more. But he was a lovely speaker.

These days my meetings with writers consist of visiting websites and in a few cases corresponding regularly through email. The downside of that is that a few writers I’ve liked and looked up have been so negative in their attitudes that just knowing that bit about them sort of diminishes my pleasure in their work.

And now that I think about it, I’m technically a published writer, too, just barely - I’ve had some poetry published. Unfortunately there’s no $$ in poetry, just satisfaction. But every morning I can look at myself in the mirror and get reacquainted with the person I see looking back at me and it’s a whole new adventure.

I like the bit about contributing to charity, also. I’ve never had any money to spare, so at various times I’ve been involved in organizations for the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, and substance abuse treatment. It’s such a heartbreaker, though, that eventually I limited myself to pets. I had an unofficial rescue for unwanted dogs, cats, and exotic birds - never too many to take care of, but it got logistically difficult at times for sure. Now we have one dog left and one bird, and DH says that’s enough. We do need another dog, though, and sooner or later the right one will show up to keep Paddy company. She’s never been an only and really misses the one we lost last fall.

It looks like a wonderful time, Lori! I hope to make it there in the future.

As a native Kentuckian, I think it's very cool that there are so many excellent authors from that area of the country - you, Elizabeth Bevarly, Teresa Medieros, and too many others to list. I think one of the things that make romances so much a touchstone for the average woman is that the authors come from all parts of the country. They're not New Yorkers writing for New Yorkers and letting the rest of us tag along if we'd like. (Not that I have anything against NYC, but face it - it's not Cincinnati, OH!)

I love your t-shirt ideas. How about these?

* Romance authors are good in a clinch
* Professional Clinchmeister
* Romance writers are top story
* (text curved over the top of a Lori Foster cover on a t-shirt) Better than green M&Ms (underneath the cover) and less fattening!
* (For a husband) Romance Reader's BoyToy
* Big type: I've loved 20 men... just this month! Small type: I'm a romance reader.
* (top line) I read romances. (bottom line) My husband is a happy man.
* Romance readers are insatiable... readers.

This is fun! I'll have to ponder some more...

Yes, I live in northern Indiana. Couldn't make it to Lori's wingding this year. Deadline time. Maybe next. (Unless we end up going to Tuscany with my brother and sil.:-)

I think one of the things that make romances so much a touchstone for the average woman is that the authors come from all parts of the country.

* * *

Don't forget that there is more than one English-speaking country. Romance novels written in American English, and set in the USA, can still appeal to Canadian, British, Australian, New Zealand, South African and other readers whose first (or even second) language is English. And vice versa, of course; there are British and Australian writers in this genre, for example, who have an international following. Furthermore, English romance novels in translation are popular in many other European and Asian countries.

The basic structure of a romance, the story of a courtship that comes up against problems and reverses, but ultimately reaches a happy resolution, is international, and has a visceral appeal to women in most cultures.

The Get-Together was such fun, can't wait till next year. :-)
To mix and mingle with the readers is the best...we don't get to do it enough. Seeing the other authors is always terrific and to do it stress-free unlike other conferences that are a hectic grind works so well.
Raising 2500 for the battered women's shelter is the icing on the cake. :-)
Next year we have more new things planned. Can't wait!
Hugs to you, Lori, for coming up with this get-togehter idea and making me part of it.

bookstoredeb, I hope you have mega good fun in Atlanta. I cancelled for this year, so I could have a little more free time. Maybe next year I'll go.

Karibear, you said, "The downside of that is that a few writers I’ve liked and looked up have been so negative in their attitudes that just knowing that bit about them sort of diminishes my pleasure in their work."

That really surprises me! All the authors I've met have been incredibly lovely ladies, very generous with their time and knowledge.

Susanna, LOVE your t-shirt ideas! I'll save them to pass on. I think our t-shirt section for me is going to be a big hit. ;-)

Waving a big "HI" to my friend, Dianne. I wouldn't even begin to do the Get Together alone. Dianne and work great together. And she's one of the few people I like to talk to on the phone. LOL. Most of the time, I avoid the phone at all costs.

Have a wonderful Father's Day everyone!
HUGS,
Lori

It would be fun to have an IL/IN/MI caravan :) -- we could rent an RV and watch DVD's while the driver (who happens to look like...oh...say George Clooney. If he did, we might be watching him instead of DVD's :) Cathie

Well... it was one particular writer. It was disconcerting to say the least, this was someone I'd actually KNOWN way back when, and she writes prolifically under 2 different pen names. She has 3 trilogies in print now which I've very much liked, and I also recommended that more of her things be recorded for the talking book library in Seattle, since she's 'local' writer. Unfortunately, most of her website is along the lines of 'no, I don't do such and so' or 'contact my agent' and nowhere I've found is her agent ever named.

On the other hand, one writer I sent an email responded promptly and we've had a sporadic on-going conversation ever since. That was really nice, because I've very much admired her books since I read the very first one.

Win some, lose some. But I really do enjoy the blogversations, too!

I'm sorry you were disappointed, karibear. But ya know, I've found how quickly your time can whittled down when talking with readers. If she's a popular author, she may have hundreds of readers hoping for her personal time. Since we'd all rather that our favorite writers WRITE, it's probably a good thing that she's prioritizing. ;-)

Have a wonderful day everyone!
