Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

Jayne Brings Gossip from the Romance Writers of America Convention

Just got back from the annual Romance Writers of America convention in Atlanta and I thought I'd give you a first hand report. This is a huge event (over 2000 attendees) so I can't begin to cover everything. But don't worry, the rest of the returning Quills will soon follow with more details.

For starters, the Literacy Signing on Wednesday night was a hugely successful affair with over 400 writers and countless readers present. Thousands of dollars were raised for literacy projects and we Quills got a chance to meet folks from all over the country. Thanks to everyone who made the trip into downtown Atlanta to buy a book, meet some authors and contribute to a great cause.

There were a lot of great workshops this year covering every aspect of craft, business, and the personal side of writing. Ninety-nine percent of these seminars are polished, professional and highly informative.

And then there is the workshop that Susan Elizabeth Phillips and I do every year. The program guide refers to it officially as the Secrets of the Bestselling Sisterhood workshop but I'm afraid it has come to be known as the Susan & Jayne show. This title reflects the sad fact that Susan and I go live and unscripted. We do not prepare. We do not write out notes. It shows.

What happens is, someone gives us a couple of microphones, the audience starts asking questions about writing and publishing and Susan and I forget that we are being taped... I blame the, shall we say, unpredictable results on Susan. She is the one who majored in drama and theater in college. For my part, all I can say is that apparently I am easily led.

Well? What am I supposed to do when Susan mentions that not all authors follow the same career paths and then goes on to point out that many have won numerous awards (that would be her) and a few have won dip-squat (that would be me). And it isn't my fault that I wore flip-flops to the workshop and she wore designer shoes. Nobody said anything about a dress code.

Another major highlight of the conference was the lavish cocktail party given by the gang from Squawk Radio. Unfortunately, I'm sure there will be pictures because Kitty Kuttlestone was running around with a camera. Just remember, don't believe everything you see because it is amazing what can be done with digital photography these days and I wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong impression about us Quills...

Wow! Virgin blog!

Jayne, if you want to do something about SEP, the Mole Rangers charge very reasonable rates for extractions and assassinations...

What happened? My comment didn't come through. I'll do it again when I'm not half asleep. Maybe it wouldn't post because I was being just a tad nasty about some people.

I think the sentence "Quills, Quills are just intense" (see above) has definite meaning in the context of your lament, JAK.

I posted a picture of the fabulous JAK flipflops at the end of this post on the WONDERFUL session Jayne and Susan gave. It was a huge hit.

Jude, your blog on the JAK/SEP session is superbly evocative, including the photos. I have the tape of their presentation at the 2003 New York RWA conference, and I occasionally play it just for the entertainment value. They are an absolutely wonderful double act, and your description brought their 2003 performance back to my mind very vividly.

Jayne; you look as if you have lost even more weight. Did your charming red flip-flops have weighted soles so as to prevent your floating away in a passing breeze?

Fret not, Jayne. I well remember Susan's fashion faux pas at a previous Librarian Day (does "white slacks" ring a bell?) ... and then there was the bathing-suit top ... Overall you would appear to be winning the fashion wars. LOL

And who said flip-flops were not a fashion statement? Especially with that lovely red polish adorning your toes ~

It was so great to see Jayne and meet Suzanne (excellent taste in movies, Suzanne!) and have Connie catch Stella hand out "Running with Quills" business cards at the Squawk Radio party and see Stella turn BRIGHT BRIGHT RED -- a sight I have personally never witnessed before and which may mean the earth has changed in its axis. :>

My buddy Susan Andersen was there and funny as ever -- congratulations on snagging her for your blog! She'll add some much needed class to this, er, establishment.

We are trying to blog photos of the party, but the site isn't cooperating, which is too bad because the photo of Jayne dancing on the table with the giant chicken is well worth a quick glance. (You're right, her toes did look great.)

And RWA raised $64,000 for Literacy this year, putting the total since 1993 at over a half million. Damn impressive!

You women look not only lovely but interesting... which is at the very least as good as lovely... lol.

It sounds as if y'all had a wonderous time. Humor is definitely the glue that holds the universe together.

Great pictures... just terrific... love the flip flops and the sweater...

Dang it, if I'd have known about the Jayne and Susan show, I'd have put my sorry butt on a plane and made it to Atlanta.
Maybe I'll catch it next year. Sounds fascinating and way too much fun!
Thanks for sharing Jayne!

Did Kitty get some GOOD pictures?

Blogger Jayne Ann Krentz said...

Yes, I'm sure Kitty got some good pictures but probably not as good as the ones Jude brought back! Sheesh. Just wish I'd realized she was running around with that camera at the workshop. I'm not sure I like the way I'm looking at that microphone. Oh, well, at least the flipflops photographed well...

By the way, Jude, loved the report on the Susan & Jayne show! You definitely caught the essence of that little carnival act!

Aw, Jayne, it was wonderful to see you in Atlanta! You are always the epitome of style and grace and it was an honor to have you come to our workshop. (But my favorite part was when we caught Stella handing out RWQ cards at our little Squawk event. As if we wouldn't have crashed a RWQ party carrying chicken wings and wearing chicken hats! Pulease!)

And I don't think Stella turned red. It was more like a deep purple. Very complimentary to her complexion!

I didn't go to National this year, but "The Jayne and Susan Show" was my favorite *event* last year. :) Not only that...but ummm...can I say this? I gained some wisdom amidst all the joke cracking. In fact, one of those lightbulb aha about life moments. Very cool!

I'm cracking up over the idea of Stella a lovely shade of um...purple. Can't actually imagine it though. :)

It was so wonderful seeing you all at RWA! And I will hold clutched to my shriveled little heart the image of Stella with tears of laughter running down her er, purple cheeks when I plucked the RWQ card out of the hand of lovely Kristin (I believe it was Kristin--uber librarian) and screeched, "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?"

Kittty does have pictures---mostly of the floor. Will have to go through the images to see if I can salvage the ne with Jayne dancing ala chicken

Ok. Something of what I originally said as a comment.

Jayne was being too modest. She won a few Ritas too but they were "just" Gold Medallions at that time. And she won 2 rare 5-star reviews from RT as well as probably numerous awards there.

And don't the authors submit their books to be judged? Have you submitted any lately, Jayne? Though I think that authors who have won a few Ritas should make way for the newcomers.

I also said that I've never read any of SEP's books but I've read most of you-know-whose books. They're one of a few authors' books that are like comfort food. I desperately wanted to find "Ghost Hunter" yesterday but only just now found it. I was looking in the wrong place. Whah. I had to get one of my other two comfort authors instead.

P.S. I felt so miserable in this weather. (see comment after JUST FOR KICKS interview) You'd think one of my friends would offer me an afternoon in their air-conditioned homes at least. All I have is a heat-producing dehumidifier.

Oh, yeah, by the way, Jayne, I saw another neat picture of you taken at the signing. I don't remember where it was. Somebody's blog mentioned another blog, etc.

Nope, no golden medallions, either. I'd remember, I'm sure. And you're right, I never have submitted to contests so I really can't complain.

Hey! My shoes were almost as cute as JAK's flip flops. Okay, so maybe they weren't as comfortable. The Jayne and Susan Show is definitely getting out of control. Not because of "moi." Heavens, no. The sad truth is that I never know what's going to come out of JAK's mouth. As for contests... Maybe if she'd actually ENTER a few, she might win one of them! On the other hand, does she really need more laurels tossed her way? We already know she's brilliant, funny, talented, yada yada, yawn. (Confidentially, she also holds her wine a wee bit better than me.) BTW, whoever mentioned my few "minor" fashion faux pas(es), is terribly unkind. I'm still suffering post traumatic stress from the "incidents." Do we really need a rehash? (And that bathing suit top was cute, damn it!)

Jayne - because of this blog, I have discovered your books. I LOVE THEM!! When an author creates characters that the reader likes so much that she doesn't want the book to end - well, what more could a reader ask for? If you would enter those contests, I'm sure you would win - but you are already a winner with your readers!
