Suzanne asks: "What's a Quill to do?"

I'm about to take a short hiatus. This is the first real time off I've had from writing in 2006. (I refuse to count RWA or the three weeks + after the conference when I had the flu and a nasty case of vertigo as "time off.")

A hiatus to me means time to read, read, and read. Watch a little TV. Definitely go to the movies or rent the DVDs of whatever I missed in the theaters.

So, I've been asking everyone I know for recommendations: books they loved, TV shows they've been watching, movies they can rave about. Here's what I have so far:

My son gives a big endorsement to the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child trilogy: BRIMSTONE, DANCE OF DEATH, and THE BOOK OF THE DEAD. I must draw the line, however, at his TV choices: I don't think I'm interested in reruns of "Friends" or "Seinfeld." And the only movie he's seen this summer is "The Pirates of the Caribbean."

My husband gives two thumbs up to any book by Jeffery Deaver. I see there is a stack of them on the bookshelf in our family room. His TV recommendation is football. Nuf said. I know he doesn't have a movie to rave about because we haven't been to any movies thanks to my crazy work schedule and the aforementioned flu/vertigo episode.

P.S. Under pressure, dh came up with "Bones," a TV show based on the experiences of best-selling author and practicing forensic anthropologist, Kathy Reichs.

My friend and fellow writer, Shirley Jump wrote me a whole essay when I e-mailed her. Here's what she recommended in the TV show category:

Well, after working so hard on the Opus, you need something vapid and a total waste of time. I recommend "My Name is Earl." Not only will you see how the other half lives, but how they do it while reaching even deeper into the dregs of humanity. Earl has good intentions because he believes Karma is trying to teach him a lesson about his life of petty crime, but he is surrounded by a cast of characters with the worst of intentions, which kind of makes redemption hard.

Just start with his ex-wife, Joy. She "rents" movies by digging in the return bin ("I got us a new one, honey!"). Or when she asks how bad her kids have to be to get into the bad kids camp so she can have a week alone for Mother's Day. She's no Mother of the Year but in a weird way, you have to like her, even if she's bad. :-)

Earl is a hapless, bit naive, good-intentioned but not too ambitious guy who suddenly has a wake-up call. He gets sidetracked often, but represents, in many ways, all of us, and our own struggle between doing what is right and doing what we really want to do. It's funny TV, doesn't require a whole lot of thinking and is one of my favorite shows. Of course, that may say a whole lot about how deep-thinking I am, LOL. (Look for THE OTHER WIFE by Shirley Jump, Harlequin NeXt. November 2006.)

So, I asking for your help: What's a Quill to do? Please share your recommendations for books you've recently read and loved, TV shows you enjoy, and movies you can rave about.

    Here's to a Happy Hiatus!
    Suzanne

    Virgin! Virgin! YaY!

I can second both the Preston/Child trilogy and the Deaver books, I've read all of them and they're wonderful (don't look for much in the romantic sense though...lol.) As far as other books... there are so many good ones that I can't choose which ones to recommend. As my most recently read new release I can tell you that Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts (first in a trilogy) was excellent.

My husband and I just saw The Illusionist with Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. It was the best movie I've seen this year, including DVD rentals. Great plot!

Television? "Bones" is really good and on our TiVo list. "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" is another favorite as is "House". Excellent, high wit, dry humor and interesting "cases" and well, Hugh Laurie isn't too tough to look at ;)

Happy, happy Hiatus-ing, Suzanne! You so deserve the relaxation :)

I've put "The Illusionist" on our must-see movie list. I've heard from several friends that it's excellent!

And I intend to get buy BRIMSTONE and the new Nora Roberts paranormal on my first outing to a bookstore next week.

    Thanks for the recommendations, Deb!

Speaking of TV shows, CSI just started up again last week and it comes on tomorrow night. I don't think I've watched any REALLY good movies lately (well except the Sentinel) but there is a new Robin Williams movie coming out Oct. 13 where he's a comedian that runs for president.... and wins! It's called Man of the Year. Also the platinum edition of Disney's Little Mermaid comes out on 2-disc DVD Oct. 3. I have a ton of books I need to get around to reading including a book I've heard rave reviews about called Real Women Don't Wear a Size 2 (sorry don't know who it's by). Well that's about it!

My tastes run to crime and/or reality. My favorite TV shows are The First 48 (real homicide detectives solving real homicides, on A&E), Numb3rs (hot but geeky mathematics prof helps FBI brother solve crime), NCIS (Navy cops solve crimes), and Mystery! (PBS, featuring mostly British mysteries). Also any of the Law & Order franchises. The CSI franchises are pretty good sometimes but they always crack me up - none of the fictional cop shows have a lot to do with reality, but the CSI guys are totally alternate reality. If you can get past that, they're fun to watch.

I ditto the Preston/Childs books; just finished Tyranosaurus Canyon by Preston (no Childs) and it was quite good too. Preston loves natural science and history, and his/their books are very rich in those kinds of details. Robert Crais is wonderful, also Michael Connolly. William Kent Krueger is good too. If you like vampires, JR Ward's third just came out. I'm not much into the vampire line, but I really enjoyed her books.

As for movies... I've not been in the theater since the third Lord of the Rings movie. I'm no help at all there. :D

And Real Women Don't Wear Size 2 is by Kelley St. John, who is a member of the same RWA chapter that I'm in! Southern Magic, in B'ham, AL. I've not read it yet, but I've heard great things.

I've never seen "The Little Mermaid," so I will rent the DVD. I've always enjoyed Robin Williams, so I'll keep an eye out for his new movie, too.

    susanna in alabama,

I'm a big fan of "Mystery" on PBS, too. I've been taping the Inspector Linley mysteries each Sunday evening this past month and intend to have a wonderful time watching them while I'm on hiatus.

Thanks for the list of recommended authors. I will look for them when I spend a leisurely day wandering through my local bookstore. (My idea of a perfect day!)

    Suzanne,
I've recently read Jessica Trapp who writes medieval historicals and those are great. I've also read Sophie Jordan's debut book "Once Upon a Wedding Night and absolutely loved it. I've been trying out new authors along with my reading my favorites and so far, have read a lot of good books. As far as tv shows, Gilmore Girls has started back up and I watch Desperate Housewives as well. I really don't watch much tv since I have a son who is almost 3 running around. When I do get a break, reading is at the top of my list before anything else. The last movie I saw in the theater was Wicker Man with Nicholas Cage. I'm not a big Nicholas Cage fan but I really enjoyed that movie.

For completely mindless TV viewing, my husband and I watch How I Met Your Mother, Dirty Jobs (Discovery Channel), and Deal Or No Deal. If we don't mind thinking a little bit we watch the CSIs, Criminal Minds, Bones, and House.

And if I really want to dust off the ol' gray matter (my husband would rather nap) naturally I grab a book. The last "new" novel I finished was Laurell K Hamilton's "Danse Macabre." Janet Evanovich is always good for a laugh and has "Twelve Sharp" out now and "Motor Mouth" coming out next week. Other than those, I am pretty far behind on my To Read pile.

I'm pretty far behind on my movies too. I think the last ones I saw were "Cars" and "Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man's Chest."

    Enjoy your time off.

If you like crime novels with a police-detective hero, I heartily recommend Donna Leon's series (about 13 so far) of mysteries featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti.

They are set in Venice, where the (American-born) author lives, and the evocation of the city is quite magically good; not in any way romanticised, but amazingly strong, true and memorable. The characterisation is highly skilled, and the continual descriptions of delicious North Italian meals add another pleasure to reading them.

I would have to suggest "24" on Fox. It is the best and if you have never see it...rent a season at a time. It will keep you hooked!!

    1:35 PM
    Blogger Toni Lea Andrews said...

Oooh, careful with that 24 recommendation. Hooked is right--it's like heroin. I had never seen it, so started from day one, renting them from Netflix. I have a three-at-a-time subscription, so I couldn't get a full season all at once and had to wait until they received a return to send a new one. I was waiting by the mailbox like a crack addict on a street corner.

To read a book that's WAY outside the box, try DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER. It's the first in a series and the protagonist is a sociopathic serial killer. Yup, you read that right. Oh, and it manages to be funny.

Recent movies I enjoyed: Mrs. Henderson Presents (warning: full frontal nudity of Bob Hoskins, albeit brief), The World's Fastest Indian, The Matador (in which Pierce Brosnan is having way too much fun being seedy).

    Blogger Suzanne Simmons said...

agtigress, sounds like an intriguing series --- I especially like the setting of Venice --- and I'm eagerly looking forward to trying Donna Leon's books!

    I appreciate the recommendation!

steve, mac, and nic ~ I've heard that "24" is an excellent series.

I'll have to check my local Blockbuster and see if they have Season One for rent. (Or should I say "Day One?" :-)

toni lea andrews~ thanks for the timely warning about "24."

A serial killer that's funny? Okay, I've got to give that book at least a try.

I think I can rent "The Matador" without even leaving home --- via ON DEMAND movies from our cable company.

You've all given me so many great recommendations . . . how long did I say my hiatus was? :-)

You've received great recommendations. I have to add Grey's Anatomy for Thursday night TV viewing. Don't get me started, just watch one show.

I'll second the Deaver recmmendation, also anything by Lee Child, Robert Crais, Robert K Tanabaum's Butch Karp series, Peter Bowen's Gebriel Du Pre series, any of the Quills, Coulter, Nora Roberts [I've always liked Carnal Innocence best], Jennifer Crusie, Evanovich's non-Plum books...

As for TV, I go for stuff like People's Court and other court shows - boyoboy, do they ever make me glad I'm me. I haven't actually been to a theater to see a movie since the original Porky's came out [kids request] and we don't do rentals any more. Though I did like Kinfolk with Patrick Swayze.

    Have fun hiatusing.

I'm not a big CSI fan, but I love Gray's Anatomy. And Lost is starting their new season tonight.

Hmmm.... It is hard to recommend when I don't know your tastes that well, Suzanne.

I just finished JR Ward's latest and love them... I am also looking forward to the second Nora Roberts.

However, I can definitely recommend CSI and House (both of which have seasons available on DVD). I am addicted to both shows and love the characters.

As for movies, I am looking forward to seeing X-Men 3 (it comes out on video next week). I haven't seen anything in the theatres in a little while (I admit that I saw Snakes on a PLane and loved it. It was hilarious). V for Vendetta rocked.

My TV is not hooked up either so I've watched no TV since sometime in Oct. last year. Can't afford it. I'm not a cinema person. I prefer to watch them on TV. I'm a fan of 40s movies and am very hesitant about spending money on (modern) new ones.

I've read good things about the detective in Venice series and wouldn't mind reading it myself. Another series that I found out about by accident is by Miriam Grace Monfredo. She writes about a feminist in the mid-1800s. Her name is Glynis Tryon and she also solves mysteries. I haven't been able to read the one I've got from the library yet but they sound quite intriguing because they have real historic characters like Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott in them (don't know the latter). The first is called "Seneca Falls Inheritance" and starts in 1848.

Then I love Susan Grant's stories. All of them are a delight. Even the rats enjoyed one of them while it was in the basement. Yuck

    Hi Sue:

I'm not sure you need more recommendations, but here goes.

First, Tigress's recommendation for the Donna Leone stories is seconded here.

Gray's Anatomy is a great favorite of mine, also Steve and Mae's suggestion for 24 is excellent in my book. Love that show. Watched the premier of Brothers and Sisters because I'm a Sally Field fan and thoroughly enjoyed the piece. I'll be giving that another try.

If you're in the mood to try more mysteries: Ruth Rendell, Ian Rainkin, Tess Gerritson, that list could go on.

I read JD Robb, Memory in Death and enjoyed the story.

Want to see All The King's Men.

I enjoy YA books, as a matter of fact. I have DRAGON RIDER by Cornelia Funke on my TBR pile. I discovered this wonderful German author with THE THIEF LORD, also set in Venice.

"The Prestige" also sounds right up my alley.

Suzanne and erin - I'm also a STARGATE SG1 fan. Not enjoying it as much lately, but still going to be sorry to see it go. Thank goodness for DVDs.

I have to second (or third or fourth) the HOUSE recommendation. Hugh Laurie is so talented (we love him from BLACKADDER days at my house) and the show is such a great character study.

Oh- and Suzanne - if you like Cornelia Funke don't miss INKSPELL. She is my favorite YA author and it is imho the best of her books.

Grey's Anatomy is wonderful - and at least one season is now out on DVD so you can catch up on the relationships.

I don't think anyone mentioned Boston Legal (... whispers "Denny Crane" ... and ducks)... very funny and well written. It airs on Tuesday nights.

I have a bus ride to and from work, so I've been catching up on my reading. On my last trip home, Mom handed off the Donovan series by Elizabeth Lowell. I finished Midnight in Ruby Bayou this morning. And hoping to find out if there is another in the series, found my way here by accident today.

Elizabeth Carmichael is an author I really enjoy who I don't think is represented here among the Quills. Her series about Miss Piggy the Corgi keeps me in stitches (Finding Mr. Right; Diamond in the Ruff; Gone to the Dogs; The Cat's Meow; A New Leash on Life).

Movies - any of the John Cusack comedies for lighthearted fun.

No, no, no. Quit talking about the demise of Stargate SG-1! Even though it may have jumped the shark, I will weep bitter tears when it leaps to another channel (again) where I probably won't be able to watch.

Really love Grey's Anatomy, the last scene of Thursday's show with the slutty boy doctor coming out of the shower in a towel? Yum.

Also a fan of Criminal Minds, Eureka (Sci-Fi), Project Runway, and Dancing with the Stars.

Suzanne - MEN IN TREES, Friday night, ABC, 9 pm starring Anne Hecht (spelling?). Original and very funny. All about a relationship expert who finds out that her finance is cheating on her while she is on a trip to Alaska. Ends up in a very small town (in Alaska) populated with mostly men. Gets into some really funny situations and decides to stay in town for a while to find out what she doesn't know about men. She finds a raccoon in her closet and it ends up following her around town... she blows out all the town lights by using a hair dryer... ROTFLMAO!!
