Suzanne shares: Psst! Let me tell you a secret or two or three...

Secret #1: For most of my life I’ve been fascinated by ancient pharaonic Egypt, specifically what is known as the New Kingdom dynasties (approximately 1550-1069 B.C.E.), especially the Eighteenth and Nineteenth dynasties. Among the fabled rulers of this time period are Tutankhamun, Seti I and II, and Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great.

Secret #2: The most fascinating character I’ve ever created has been waiting for the right time, the right place, and the right book for me to tell his story.

Secret #3: Writers reinvent themselves for lots of reasons. I’ve reinvented myself to keep writing fresh and exciting for myself and hopefully for my readers.

Secret #4: My next book is truly a new beginning: I’m launching a new series, a new genre, and a new name.

Secret #5: Although I may appear to be a writer of lighthearted contemporary/historical romances, I’m actually something of a “drama queen.”

So this blog is the official unveiling of NIGHT LIFE, my first vampire paranormal romance, to be published in April 2007 by Berkley. I’ll be writing this exciting new series under the pseudonym of Elizabeth Guest. (For trivia lovers, this is a family name and the name of the heroine in my first historical romance, published by Avon in 1992.)

NIGHT LIFE is set in current day Las Vegas. You'll see that right on the front cover, where the tag line is: In Vegas, some people never see the sunlight...

NIGHT LIFE is a story of trust, betrayal, sacrifice, revenge. Life. Death. Awakening.

Here’s what someone very talented at Berkley has written for the back cover:

    He returned from death…

Venerable pharaoh, ancient god of the Nile, Adrian King once sat upon his throne and led his people nobly, only to be betrayed. But a sacred ritual has allowed him to reawaken thousands of years after his death—as a vampire. Now the owner of the Royal Palace hotel and casino in Las Vegas, he is haunted by dreams of a beautiful woman—and by the dawning of an evil presence.

…and brought her fantasies to life.

Egyptologist Christine Day is drawn to the Royal Palace by its breathtaking authenticity. She is the woman Adrian has been dreaming of, the only one who can evoke real sensual passions in this fierce warrior and leader. Compelled to share his well-kept secret with Christine, he puts her at great risk. For others have awakened who will not rest until Adrian is destroyed again, even if it means taking the only true love he’s ever known…

I’m currently working on the second book in the series, DEAD OF NIGHT, set in Los Angeles. Each story will absolutely stand on its own, of course, because that’s the type of series I prefer to read. Each book will feature a different hero and heroine. But I'm thrilled to finally get to write about a very special man and his extended royal family that I've dreamed of for years.

Cissy, web mistress extraordinaire, and I will also be creating an entirely new look for my web site this fall, which will be accessible through
http://www.elizabethguest.net/ or http://www.suzannesimmons.com/. (I’ll announce the launch of the “makeover” here.)

So, my secrets aren't secrets anymore. But I can't think of anyone I'd rather share them with the gang here at Running With Quills.

Inquiring Minds want to know, of course, because they always do: Are you as fascinated by all things ancient Egyptian as I am? Do you watch the documentaries on ancient Egypt that seem to show up regularly on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, etc.? And how do you like the cover of NIGHT LIFE?

    Cheers!

    Hello Suzanne,

I have been fascinated by Egyptian Mythology for most of my life, so much so that I took a class on Egyptian Mythology. That course was full of historical facts as well as the myths. I have watched TV shows and movies just because they have a tie to Egypt and/or it's past. I also plan on taking a course in Ancient Egyptian Civilization next semester. What I find extremely fascinating are the runes and hieroglyphs. It's interesting to know that all of the ancient names (pronunciations and spellings) are completely subject to interpretations because the vowels are left out of the scheme, quite fascinating really.

I do like the cover, however after seeing the cover and reading your description, I am reminded of Angel, the vampire with a soul from the series, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel", a spin off series. Some of your initial description also made me think of Lestat from "Queen of the Damned".
How much, if any, inspiration did these offer in your writing process? If these weren't a source of inspiration, what was? I am always curious to see what inspires writers' stories.

I do look forward to reading it.

Sue/Elizabeth: I'm so excited about NIGHT LIFE. This is going to be a series we follow closely. I've always enjoyed hanging on for the next instalment of a favorite series.

I think the King Tut exhibition was the biggiest thing Egyptial for me. The heavy gold, carnelian, lapis (you do have a way with lapis, Sue,) the rich masks. Very sumptuous.

    Suzanne! How AWESOME! Congratulations :-)

I love Egypt, Rome, Greece... I've watched each of their "condensend histories" on History Channel. Each time our local museums exhibit Egyptian relics and history I'm there. It's such a violent, romantic, dramatic time. Ramses II is one of my favorite history topics.

I can't wait to read your new series - it looks like it's gonna be terrific! April of 2007, huh? Oy, whatta wait. You...you...tease!

    Thanks, Suzanne!

carrie from wisconsin asked how much, if any, inspiration did "Buffy" or "Angel" or Lestat from "Queen of the Damned" offer in my writing process?

Actually none, Carrie. I haven't read the Lestat books and watched only a few episodes of "Buffy" when it was on.

The inspiration for my "Night" books came from ancient Egyptian mythology and not the vampire tradition. And from Adrian King/Seti III---the character I created a number of years ago. (Pre-Buffy, in fact.) That's why I'm having such a ball writing these books!

I really like the whole idea of your series. I can't say that I find ancient Egypt more engrossing than ancient anywhere else, but it's all fascinating. One of my first museum memories is of an entire 17th century French inn common room and stair to an upper floor that had been dismantled and moved to where I saw it [those people were SMALL!] in St Louis. But the earlier things are what interest me most - Incan and Mayan art, tombs and mummies from everywhere, cave paintings, textilles, and so on. One of my most awesome moments was when a friend who ran a small museum gave me a piece of a hand woven grass basket to hold that was about 800 years old - it was so incredible to actually touch something so fragile and ancient that had been created and used by someone so long ago. I like fossils too, but the human element far outweighs the age of bones.

    I like the cover, too. That's a vampire I wouldn't mind meeting.

Best of luck with this new departure, Suzanne! It must have been a very exciting process.

Although I have spent a few weeks in Egypt, either working or on holiday, every single year since 1988, and have worked amongst major Egyptian collections since 1967, I have to say that I still don't understand as much about the culture of Pharaonic Egypt as I should like to, and I have never even attempted to tackle the ancient language! It was a unique civilisation, and there is still a great deal more to learn, as any professional Egyptologist would tell you.

The supernatural was so 'normal' for ancient societies (not only the Egyptians) that I am sure your vampire-angled approach will fit in well.

    Hello again Suzanne,

I just wanted to say that I have been a huge fan of Stargate, the movie to the series, for the mythology of it myself. No matter how I ask this it isn't going to come out exactly as I want it to, but I'm going to ask it anyway. Please be patient if these questions seem redundant, the answers won't be to me because I am new to the romance world. Amanda Quick books were the ones that dipped my feet into romance novels and now I am ready to take the plunge into other writers.

I see, from your book lists, that you've had novels published since 1979. When did you first start writing about vampires? When did you start writing about Egypt? What about Egyptian mythology/history inspired you to add a vampirical twist? I realize that you've been writing about vampires for some time, but what exactly was it that indicated that a vampirical twist could be made realistic enough in an Egyptian setting? It's an idea that seems out of place, which is one of the reasons I plan to read it, but also makes me curious as to your methodology of entwining the two subjects.

Thanks for taking the time to read this email and respond. Just know that your time is well spent because it has earned you a new reader.

Hi Carrie, I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.:-)

I first wrote a book that had ancient Egyptian elements in it back in 1986. Eventually I set a historical romance in Egypt circa 1875. (DESERT ROGUE, Avon, 1992.)

NIGHT LIFE is my first vampire book, although the lead character has been waiting for his story for some time now. :-)

NIGHT LIFE is set in current-day Las Vegas. That setting was specifically chosen because it is a city with the emphasis on its "night life."

Also, I felt that the ancient Egyptian belief of living forever was a natural to go with the vampire element of eternal life. My book has a twist on that which I don't want to give away and ruin for some readers.

Ancient Egyptians also believed that magic was the most powerful tool in their culture and that figures into the plot of NIGHT LIFE as well.

I think what I'm trying to say is that the concept of eternal life was the connection between ancient Egypt and vampires for me.

I hope I answered your questions. Please feel free to write more if I didn't.

    Thanks!

    Suzanne,

You answered my question, but my course on Egyptian Mythology and Ancient Civilizations emphasized a belief on an after-life as opposed to living forever. They wholeheartedly believed in death. Serket was the scorpion goddess, protectress of human remains. Their afterlife was the Underworld, the land of the dead, ruled by Osiris. Basically a place for your soul to go after death. Before you get to this afterlife, your heart was weighed against truth and justice (Ma'at). If the heart was found unworthy to enter the house of Osiris, it was fed to Ammit, The Devourer. If this happened, the soul would cease to exist.

If you have a parochial upbringing such as myself, the connections between heaven and hell are quite clear and Thoth/Ma'at/Devourer all take the place of St. Peter at the gates of heaven judging a person's worthiness to enter. Non-existence is what would be equated with hell.

Okay, now can you see why I am having a bit of difficulty trying to make the connection? I plan on reading "Night Life", but I still would like to be a little bit clearer as to how you made the leap from belief in an after-life, land of the dead, to vampires, the undead. Also most magics the Egyptians employed were all about protecting one's soul for the journey, etc.

With this information, will you be able to give me a little bit of clarification?

    Thanks.

    Carrie

It's a lush and exotic world, but there is some sardonic male humor. Not a lot of blood and guts, but very dramatic in places. I could never stray too far from what I am. (I am what I am.)

Hi Carrie~my study of ancient Egyptian mythology for 20+ years has been a passion/hobby, but I'm not an Egyptologist. Still, there is much that can't truly be translated into modern thought or language, i.e. the term and concept of ka.

I used the mythology as a jumping off point for the story I wanted to tell and the characters I wanted to write about.

Magic was used in every aspect of ancient Egyptian life from curing a disease to solving a problem to the magical power of words. Also I specifically study and work in the 18th and 19th Dynasties of the New Kingdom period. Beliefs were not the same over the millennia of ancient Egypt's existence.

NIGHT LIFE will speak for itself if you decide to try it. BUT it is my vision of a world I created, and it is a work of fiction.

Well, since I'm a real afficionado of Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books, I think I can safely say that I am interested in Egyptian history and lore. Her latest featured the discovery of Tutankhamen's trove, written, of course, from the inimitable standpoints of Amelia herself with fillers by her son, Ramses.

I've also read other books set in Egypt, but oddly enough, the country itself has never been very close to the top of my "Countries to Visit" list. That's not to say that I wouldn't go in a flash if someone offered to pay for my visit.

Actually, speaking of old Tut, a few years ago there was such a to-do about having some of his wonderful jewellery and art-work here in North America for the very first time. However, I distinctly remember, and so did my mother, that we went to see some of the same objects in a special exhibition housed in our provincial legislature in Winnipeg in the 1960s. I really should find out more about that.

I'm certainly interested in reading the first of the books. As you probably remember, I've made my dislike of vampires and their ilk only too clear, but of course, they can be portrayed without some of the gore of bloodsucking, etc. So I'll definitely give you the benefit of the doubt on that.

And yes, I have watched hours and days of Egypt documentaries from the mundane to the fantastic--only not on the channels you've mentioned. For me it's been A&E, TLC and History Television. It's certainly a fascinating subject and I doubt we'll ever solve all the riddles surrounding them.

Oh yes, I meant to ask, seeing that you are such an admirer of Ramses II, if you have read any of the books by Christian Jacq about him, novels, that is. I haven't read all of them but he actually brings Moses into the story as well. I read the first volume in English and then decided to switch to French with the Eng. on "standby". Of course, it does take me a little longer to read the French though I am fairly proficient in it.

These books really made Ramses II come alive for me.

I must admit, however, that I'm not very familiar with the whole Egyptian mythology. I know the main characters and their roles but not the whole myths.

I'm glad that you took the leap to do something which has obviously been a lodestone for you for some time. After all, it was one of Stella's blogs that gave me the impetus to go after one of my dreams.
