    Karen Solem, on Christmas Reading

I was surprised and, I admit, fearful when Lori asked me to write a piece for her blog. What could I say, how would I say it? The theme is Christmas –how hard can that be but I was sure so much had already been written on the subject what new could I possibly add and from the publishing angle at that. But I thought about it that evening - books are such a big part of my Christmas celebrations and that’s what I can share that with you.

I like to give books as gifts. Naturally I would to support the writing community I so love but it’s more than that. Knowing what a friend or family member enjoys and finding just the right book on that subject, or introducing them to a new author or concept is a sign of caring to me. This book means something to me – I hope it can mean something special to you, too. One friend still talks about the book of garden poetry I gave to her five years ago.

From childhood I remember the thrill of opening the gift of a new book (in those days it was anything about horses), and that thrill hasn’t left me in all these years. Even though I read for a living I still love to receive books – there’s little I enjoy more than discovering a new writer who will perhaps bring insight into my own life – this past year I’ve been very focused on the work of Jon Katz who writes so beautifully about dogs and what they bring to our lives. No, I don’t have kids but I have my beautiful (and very naughty) Owen, a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy.

Thinking about books at Christmas I remembered when, as editor in chief of Silhouette Books, we came up with the concept of Christmas Short stories and how wonderful and exciting those first collections were. I still have a boxed set of the first three on my bookshelf at home. We has so much fun choosing the authors and working on the cover design – the excitement was infectious among the whole Silhouette team as we waited for books to reach the marketplace for Christmas 1986. If not the first Christmas romance novellas they are among the first published and look where that has led today. That year Nora Roberts, Maura Seger, Debbie Macomber and Tracy Sinclair all shared the joys and warmth of Christmas in a special story for readers. This year, just look at all the heartwarming Christmas novels and novellas available for readers! Lori alone has three on sale now and they’re all so wonderful.

For me, some of my favorite Christmas moments come after the rush of shopping, wrapping, mailing, traveling and maybe way too much celebrating and Christmas is over, I love that I then have lots of quiet time to relax and read, Owen will be lying on the floor beside my chair. I already have this year’s novel chosen and I’ve been savoring for the last month the thought of having the chance to really get into it without too many distractions. Maybe that’s also why Christmas stories are so appealing – in the middle of the many things we’re all doing everyday there’s a heartwarming short story you can read in an evening. I hope you can make some quiet time during your celebrations to enjoy these special offerings. Do you have anything set aside to read for your holiday vacation? I’d love to know.

Wishing you all a joyful Christmas and the happiest of New Years,
    Karen Solem

Books are always a necessity to me and even more so at Christmas time. I can´t remember how often I read through the night on Christmas night (in Iceland the celebration begins Dec. 24th, at 6 p.m.). I would usually get some books for Christmas as a kid and then spend every waking hour reading them. Ahh, those were the days.
Now I don´t read anymore through the night, but I still like to get books for Christmas so I buy them myself. It´s a kind of a Christmas gift to myself.

Books are a must for me also. The very first present I remember asking for was a book and I was so excited to receive it. Thanks for sharing

Great blog, Karen, thank you! I still love getting books for gifts, but these days my family can't get my favorities for me, because I've already gotten them. I refuse to wait for them just so they can be presents. LOL

I'd never thought about the "first" Christmas books, but naturally there had to be a first. Very interesting!

    Hugs, and thanks again,

    Lori

I struggled for years to find gifts for my mother-in-law, an extremely practical person. One year I sent her LUCIA, LUCIA by Adrianna Trigiani because it took place New York at about the time she had been living there as a young woman. She loved it! So I try to include at least one book for every occasion. It feels wonderful when she gets as excited about getting a book she wants as I am in giving it.

And for my mom - she grew up in Germany and didn't have an education that included American or British writings. I am so thrilled to give her some of the cliassic books that I love. She finished THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl S. Buck recently and just loved it. I can't wait for her to read TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

My children always get books. And my husband has just recently started reading, too, but nonfiction.

I could just move into Barnes and Noble for the holiday season and I would be happy.

Thanks for your blog! It made be appreciate book giving as well as receiving.

Welcome to RWQ, Karen! Great blog and great dog!

I love giving and receiving books at Christmas. This year I also give myself the gift of time, which I've been spending wandering the aisles of our local B&N and Borders. Lots of people on my list are getting cookbooks this year, a la Nigella Lawson and Ina Garten. (You don't have to cook to enjoy a great cookbook. I should know.:-)

    Happy Holidays one and all!

I love getting books. This Christmas, I wrote a list of all the books I wanted and left the list lying casually on the counter, hoping he would see it and get the hint.

The list is still there...but you never know.

Suzanne, one of the books on my list is "Hot, Sour, Salty, Sweet" -- what a terrific cookbook. Beautiful, too. If you like Asian food, it's a great one.

Welcome, Karen! We actually met, although I don't expect you to remember as it was long, LONG ago at a Novelist Inc conference in Denver. ('95, I think)

Great blog. Count me among the gifters/giftees who loves giving and/or receiving books-- and not just for the holidays. Just about any occasion will do. (g) ~Susan

Neat dog! Looks a bit like mine.

I always gave my kids books for just about anything [or nothing]. When I last spoke to my son - a commercial fisherman in Alaska - he informed me he'd quit reading fiction. I asked his what he WAS reading then, and he told me the latest was a 6 1/2" thick environmental impact statement! Who reads those for fun? I'm still wondering whether the books for everything had an adverse effect...

    Happy Holidays.

    Hi Karen!

What I have set aside to read is a stack tallker and wider (gasp) than I am.

But I'm really looking forward to reading Josephina Javilina to my grandkids. :-)

    Hello Karen,

Do you have anything set aside to read for your holiday vacation?

Honestly, not just one. I'll probably start with my next Drizzt Do'Urden novel by R.A. Salvatore because I am suffering from Drizzt withdrawal. From there I'll either jump right into the next one or I'll pick one from the many new authors on my to read list. It all depends upon what my mood is after finals, of which I have one tomorrow and one Tuesday. I may also finish, Death by Theory and then maybe onto Dug to Death, two archaeological mayhem/mystery stories by Adrian Praetzellis. After that, I'm not sure what. It depends upon if I take a class during the upcoming interim so I can graduate by the end of next May...

I don't have anything special lined up to read during the holidays. I'll just take the top book on my TBR pile!

The one book I always try to read at the holidays is A Christmas Carol, with any luck this year i'll finish it before they play the old black and white movie version on Christmas Eve

For a long time now, I haven't had a regular Chrismas reading list. That was probably because I was nowhere near my cheerful Christmas literature. I was in Europe and the books were in Canada. Maybe I can find them again and put them in a special place here with the Christmas music and make my own little festival of Christmas traditions.

Just wondering how you Seattle people are faring. I've only just read about the storm. I hope you weren't affected by it, at least not too badly. I've potentially got family affected by it: aunt and cousin in Portland, OR; a cousin and her family in Vancouver, WA; another cousin and her daughters in the Seattle area. I hope you and they are all doing well.

I remember getting horse books! I still read horse books.

This year, my Christmas book was "Christmas Jars" by Jason F. Wright. Otherwise, I'll read Christmas books/stories year 'round.

Both of my children had trouble finding something for me this year. I handed them each a book and said, "Do you want to wrap this for me?" Both said yes and then did so now I have to wait!
