    Jayne Ponders Ladies in Leather

What is it about ladies in leather? If you've been paying attention to book covers of late you will have noticed that a lot of the new paranormal/urban fantasy paperbacks feature women in leather -- often with tattoos. The interesting thing about this, of course, is that these books are being marketed mostly to women, not men. A lot of romance readers buy them. One editor (who shall go unnamed) told me recently that she could sell just about anything these days if she got the art department to put a lady in leather on the cover.

I've been pondering the phenomenon recently because I've never had a cover that featured a lady in leather. I've got nothing against men in leather, of course, although I haven't had many of those, either, come to think of it. The closest I came was the cover of my last Jayne Castle novel, GHOST HUNTER,
which is illustrated with a guy clad in a leather vest. Guess the art department couldn't afford the full leather jacket. But, hey, it worked so I'm not complaining.

Nevertheless, I'm still waiting for a lady-in-leather cover and while I wait, I've been doing a little research. I can't help it. It's the librarian in me. Anyhow, it was my sister-in-law (an expert on ferns) who first opened my eyes to the possibilities. See, her husband (my brother) owns a Harley-Davidson. He, of course, gets to wear a lot of leather as well as one of those cute little bandanas. That all goes with the territory when you're a guy and you own and ride a bike. However, turns out that -- for safety reasons only, you understand -- my sister-in-law also gets to wear the full outfit -- leather chaps, jacket, boots, the works. And a while back, she stuffed me into the gear because my brother wanted to take me for a ride on the back of the Harley. Safety first, right?

Seeing myself in the mirror dressed to the nines in leather was a real eye-opener, let me tell you. In a flash, my entire self-image underwent a dazzling transformation. Talk about Urban Fantasy! I was ready to head straight to the nearest tattoo parlor.

It took a while to strap on all that leather and while she was assisting me, my sister-in-law let me in on the Big Secret. Men, she said, are absolutely fascinated by the sight of a woman in full leather motorcycle gear. She explained that when a woman in leather dismounts a bike at a rest stop, whips off the helmet and sashays into the restroom, she can rest assured that every male eye in the vicinity will be trained on her. Talk about a rush.

As for wearing the stuff, well, I admit it isn't particularly comfortable but, boy, howdy, does it give you a sense of feminine power. I highly recommend the experience if you happen to be in need of a little boost of the spirits.

And that, I think is the real appeal of the ladies-in-leather covers. We women look at them and presto, it puts us in touch with our inner goddess or our inner witch or our inner sorceress or Buffy. Whatever. Leather covers work. I want one.

    Hello Jayne!
I've never had the opportunity to wear a complete leather outfit but I did go through a motorcycle phase when I was in college. What REALLY got male attention was being on a bike driven by a girlfriend of mine. All that attention was a bit heady but I never got the courage (or the leg strength) to get a bike of my own.

    Welcome to the leatherness, Jayne!

The HHP has a Harley, too, and yes, it's important to wear leather for safety purposes. Why else would my accountant self be in leather? LOL. Then again, I do own a pair of leather pants that aren't for riding. I've worn them twice in the five years I've had them... both times at the HHP's request, with a white men's styled dress shirt. The guys love a woman in leather. Women love a woman in leather. If you have a tight body they love it even more.

My guess? Confidence. You feel confident wearing it. You're perceived as confident when you're seen in it. For whatever reason I've never felt sleazy in leather - although I've seen some sleazy leather wearers...LOL.. but it's usually something else that makes them seem that way. Greasy hair, missing teeth, tight bustier, etc. *shudder*

I'm all for a leather clad person on the cover for one of your books, Jayne, but I'd buy 'em if there was a dude wearing a tutu ;-)

    Happy Monday.

Bring the leather on - but as for the tutu - if any of your (adult)heros is portrayed in a tutu, then I´ll stop buying. LOL.

It's the inner vixen. Or vixen wannabe, in my case.

I've never thought about it before, but one of my very first gifts to my husband (then boyfriend) was a leather jacket. Obviously, that one was actually for me. My husband's constantly looking at motorcycles but I've been discouraging it. Maybe I need to rethink the whole thing.

But I'm with Deb - I'd buy the book with the guy in a tutu (I'm sure there would be a good reason).

Ohhhhh Jayneee.... I don't suppose you took a picture? ::grin:::
We ALL wanna see you clad in head to toe leather. Seriously!

I think the covers sell just because it indicates a kick-ass heroine inside. It's not so much what she's wearing, but what her wardrobe represents. And right now, kick-ass heroines are "in."

It's like the white coat indicates a doctor.

Leather on a lady indicates the whole attitude of Underworld (the movie) or Lora Croft (the character) and readers get a clear image of the book content.

Funny though, because my urban fantasy has a woman in a baggy T-shirt and jeans. No leather for her. No tattoos either.
Hope I won't be misleading readers!

As to me ever putting on leather and taking a gander... ::shudder:: Um, no thanks. I'm good at visualizing, and that's not something anyone should ever have to see, not even me. ;-)

    Great blog!

I think you may be onto something here. Sadly, the closest I've ever gotten to wearing leather is one of my numerous leather handbags. (Yep, I "collect" handbags.)

I had a leather skirt in high school. Wore it only once. It looked really cool, but when you live in Southern California where the temps routinely pass the 110 degree mark, leather skirts stick to everything. And no matter how cool you try to be, the whole peel yourself off vinyl or plastic furniture really ruins the image!

But a guy in a leather vest without a shirt, now that's a different story!

Leather definitely sends a lot of messages -- I think it is fascinating that so many of us love the look.

Lori, I agree that a lady in leather on the cover definitely indicates a kick-ass heroine -- and that style is big at the moment.

Deb & Carolyn: Don't worry, I don't think the publisher has any plans to put any of the guys on my covers in a tutu.

By the way, Deb, I think you're right about leather clothing giving a woman confidence. And nothing is sexier.

Hmm. There's leather, and then there's leather. With the exception of my rubber Birks, I wouldn't be caught dead in anything but leather footwear. For years, I wore one of DH's leather jackets - not a motorcycle jacket, a bomber jacket.

Bike leathers may look kick-ass, but they are above all a safety gotta-have. It's a whole lot easier to buy new leathers than spend months recovering from road rash.

What I did find a bit odd is that no one so far has mentioned the cowboy. Boots, chaps, vests, shearling jackets... What's more kick-ass than that? And they're pretty much unisex, too. Smaller boots, smaller chaps, smaller jacket, just as kick-ass attitude.

Yep - leather when you ride on the back of a bike is common sense. Along with that helmet.

I still own a leather skirt my DH bought for me when we were dating eons ago. I loved putting that sucker on with a man's shirt and high heels. *grin*

    Wonder where I packed it...

Jayne, maybe the back cover counts? You could have a new author picture and get your Lady In Leather on after all!
(Er, that was meant to be amusing, not snarky)

Jayne - Don't know if you get a comic called "Rose is Rose" up there. Rose is an upbeat housewife with a husband and small child who enjoys her life. (It's a charming comic by the way.)

However, every once in a while, her alter ego comes forth when she needs to feel powerful - you guessed it - a biker chick with long hair, bandana, tatoos, and leather. She mounts her bike and rides off to do battle. I've always liked her alter ego.

This darn thing ate my post. Whoa, I can't tell you how much I dislike wasting even the mostly meaningless words. GRRRRR,

    Try again:

Jayne: A whole new element to your personality is revealed. Now, whereas those legs up there could be yours, the big feet don't fit--so Lori and I want the real thing:)

I've always had a thing for bomber jackets, I think its a kind of cocktail of cowboy and special ops military type: It reeks of, tough.

Revelation time. In highschool I had leather pants. I loved 'em because nobody else had 'em. I felt daring and different--and at that time my whole aim in like was to be daring and different. Had you known my quiet personality, you'd know how funny that was.

Motorcycles leave me legless! I mean it, I get off and I can barely stand because my leggs feel like jello. I do enjoy the feeling of being right in the elements.

What to do about Jayne, Leather Woman, Krentz? I don't believe in suppression of basic desires, unless they could hurt someone else. Ooh, that does bring up another point...

How about easing into this thing, Jayne. A black leather halter dress, split to the thigh and worn with over-the-knee stilletto black boots. Yup, you could get mileage out of that.

Next we'll discuss the black leather bikini.

I'm a fan of leather pants. I think I've worn them to the last 5 or 6 Friday or Saturday night events at RWA national, because they make me feel hip, they're comfortable and they dress me up with a look I can change just by wearing a different top. Not to mention that I am so not a fancy dress woman. Well, actually I like dressing up. But I don't have enough events to wear my dressy dresses to that don't involve seeing the same people who have seen me already in my one and only. :)

Hmm, I never considered leather cover-wise, but now, reading your blog, I want one!!

I agree with Lori that the women in leather covers indicates a fearless kick ass heroine.

    Cool blog.

Umm, leather. Love it except that I can't afford it. All I've ever managed so far is coats. And I am *not* *that* sort of girl--if you can even use that word. I also love high leather boots, particularly good for wading through high snowdrifts if you treat the leather properly.

As you say, I've never experienced how well these items fit in reality: pants, top, jacket all in leather. I can imagine that if you gain an ounce, it will pinch somewhere. But the biggest pinch is to the pocketbook and besides I really am not a biker fan.

Other than that, I think leather looks sharp. The only problem with my two cheaper leather coats was that the color faded. I'm glad my winter coat hasn't faded in 23+ years and has classic styling.

I wonder what it would bring out in me if I could really get the whole deal. I don't think I'd care to be any of those you mentioned.

I've always loved capes as well. I think I'm living in the wrong century.

I have never own any leather clothing other than a coat when I was a teenager. It went out of style and I didn't buy a new one until this winter. I love it, it's sleek, black and so soft. And I admit, it makes me feel a little sharper than usual. I did buy a pair of under the knee leather boots 2 winters ago and they too make me feel a bit more confident (since I'm INCREDIBELY shy, this is a minor miracle). I'd love a leather skirt or pair of pants, but know I'll never have the self-confidence to wear them.
And you're right. The sight of a female leather clad person on the front of a book, does seem to signigy that she's kick-butt, or suffers no fools.

I'm tellin' ya. :) And I probably would be wearing leather pants again in Dallas, except I'm not going this year. It will be the first national con I've missed since Anaheim, but I can't afford the time . . .and it's Dallas. I'm really tired of that city.

Okay, we need to arrange a year at National conference where all the Quills wear leather pants.
Well, except me. I'll be the photographer. ;-)
See, I don't think they make them for super squatty legged women. I'm 5'4", but I have the legs of a 5-footer. LOL

Susan, I'm not a dress-up woman, either. I manage when forced into it, but the older I get, the less "forced" by society I feel.

I LOVE the idea of Jayne in leather for her author photo! I think it'd be awesome. Can we all chant to Jayne, "Do it, do it, do it, do it...."

I loved the black leather pants that I owned! They are incredibly comfortable, and you are right... the feeling of power and confidence they bring really does the trick!

I always wore them to work when I thought I was going to be faced with a difficult task... and I worked at a church at the time! Ha! I became quite the outspoken staffer during those days!

    Lori,

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Don't you know that well made, well tailored black (or dark) leather pants make your legs look LONGER?!?! They'd be loverly on you, really. Wearing nice matching leather boots helps, too... they don't hafta be 4" heels - 2" would work.

I'm 5'0", my inseam is a 31. My black leather pants (when they fit) make my legs look much longer than they really are.

    So... next excuse? ;-)

Jayne - I love the idea of alter egos! All of us have that hidden wild child underneath the nice girl exterior! I love stories where the Hero thinks he has the Heroine all figured out and then sees a totally different side of her. In that spirit, I found a book by a newly pubbed author that may interest you ..Leather, Harleys and a kick ass heroine. http://www.miriamauerbach.com/index.htm

Yes, AGTigress, I remembered the red leather jacket, too...I LOVED it!

I personally would not pick up a woman-in-leather cover, unless Jayne had written it, and then I would blame the cheese factor on the publisher! :D

Having said that, I would LOVE to have a hero who rides a bike, please NOT a Harley...make it something classy, like an Indian, or a Ducati, or better yet, a Triumph (British bikes rule). My Dad has been riding Triumphs since I was a baby, so to me they will always be the coolest (or neato, as I used to say). My DH does not ride a motorcycle, but he's an alpha in other ways... :D

    Love this post!
