SUZANNE GOES TO THE DARK SIDE

The following "items" have been packed away in an old steamer trunk, covered with mothballs, and lugged up to the attic:

    1. My "Iowa corn-ball" sense of humor. (Yes, I was born in Iowa. Storm Lake to be exact. A perfect-sounding birthplace for a writer who is crossing over to the Dark Side.)

    2. Any and all attempts on my part to create humorous plot twists from a heroine who nearly runs over a pig with the hero’s pickup truck, to a hero and heroine who have sex on a pool table, along with endless puns about cue sticks and eight balls, to the three villains I nicknamed Curly, Larry and Moe. (Nuf said.)

    3. Restraints, constraints, or any kind of "straints." (I now refer to myself as She-Who-Dares!)

In their place are the larger-than-life elements I’m unveiling in my new series:

    ~ My inner "drama queen."

~ A deeply held desire to walk – just once – on the Wild Side. (Refer to She-Who-Dares above.)

~ A life-long fascination with ancient Egypt, the pharaohs of the New Kingdom dynasties, and their extensive royal households. (Not to mention their attitudes about sexuality and their extensive royal harems.)

~ Sardonic male wit. Is there any other kind for the ultimate Alpha Male — an all-powerful king who has awakened three thousand years after he was assassinated and who is now on the verge of becoming a vampire? (Boy, howdy! as Jayne would say.)

~ The ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead with its legion of demons and destroyers who dwell in the Underworld. (My favorite is the Eater of Blood and the Breaker of Bones. Talk about the perfect jumping-off point for a vampire series.)

    DRUM ROLL PLEASE.

Right now, right here at Running With Quills, I’m officially announcing the name of my new paranormal romance series, my new pen name, and my new web site.

NIGHT LIFE, Book One of the PHARAOHS RISING series, will be released April 3, 2007.

NIGHT LIFE is a story of trust. Betrayal. Sacrifice. Revenge. Life. Death. Awakening.

I hope you’ll also stop by and check out the lush and exotic world that web goddess Cissy Hartley has created for me at http://www.elizabethguest.net/

Come take a walk on the Dark Side...if you dare!

As one of the privileged few who got an advance look at NIGHT LIFE, I will only say that Vegas is absolutely the perfect setting for an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who is hovering on the brink of becoming an Eater of Blood and a Breaker of Bones. Loved it!

Jayne~you, more than anyone, know that NIGHT LIFE and the new series is a lifelong dream come true for me.

I couldn't have done it without your encouragement and the zillion times you had to listen to me plotting out loud, reading bits and pieces out loud, brainstorming out loud. "Thank you" doesn't cover it, my friend.

    Love,

As one vamp writer to another, thank you, Teresa! Isn't it fun walking on the Dark Side?

NIGHT LIFE is also the sexiest book I've ever written. Whoa! (Or maybe I should be saying, "Ouch" as in burning up the pages.) Writing the love scenes was revealing and fun!

Awesome site, Elizabeth Guest! I hope we can continue to call you Suzanne. It would be just a tad confusing with two Elizabeths.

Cissy did a great job of evoking ancient Egypt. Elizabeth Peters' "Amelia Peabody Series" is one of my favorites and I too love watching documentaries about Egypt and any other place they are done about. Have you yourself ever read any "Amelia Peabody" books? They, of course, don't take place in old Egypt but in archaeological times.

I've also been to several Egyptian exhibitions: one long ago in Winnipeg, MB when the Tutankhamon treasures were exhibited in the splendor of our Manitoba Legislature; another in Germany which featured Akhenaten, his family and era. If I were better at handling heat, I'd love to go to Egypt.

Anyways, this sounds like a very different series from the usual and despite my cringing from vampires, I'll definitely get this book.

Congratulations on your reviews so far and I hope the series is a great success and that you are able to realize all the dreams you have for it.

Very nice website! Best of luck with the new series.

Slightly OT, are any of the Quills willing to post whichever publishers decided to curtail previous series of their's? I got to thinking about it last night, and there are so many great series in practically every genre but romance, and I for one would like to write to them regarding that little omission.

ranurgis~thanks for all your interest. I think you may find my vampires to your taste...if you'll pardon the terrible pun.

I haven't read the Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books or any fiction written about Egypt--I was always a little fearful it would somehow alter my own vision of what I wanted to write. On the other hand, I have read dozens of nonfiction books written about ancient Egypt and I've watched every documentary produced in the past decade or two.

susan~You're having a root canal done on April 3rd. My first paranormal romance hits stores. I think we'll both be having a nerve-wracking day!

Glad you enjoyed the excerpt at the new web site. I thought about using a love scene, but they all seemed a tad explicit. :-)

Best of luck with the root canal!

I know NIGHT LIFE will be available through the online bookstores, i.e. amazon.co.uk.
I'm not certain if the book will be available at "bricks and mortar" bookstores in the UK this spring.

    Thanks for inquiring!

This is so exciting, more so because (drumroll) I'm read the manuscript and this is an "edge of the seat" book. It reads as if you're being subtly pulled into a dark, sensual force and old evils and jelousies are bubbling just out of reach. Hehe, but do they stay out of reach. Adrian is--sigh--to die for (like that turn of phrase) and very powerful and very sure of himself, and so very hypnotized by one fascinating Egyptologist.

My copy is already on order--and will be winging it's way to Elizabeth G for a signature the minute it arrives.

Woo hoo--we need more of these thrills and I know th writer who is just the woman to give them do us.

    Stella :)

Thank you, Stella, for the kind and generous words about NIGHT LIFE. (Quills really do make the best friends of all!)

I promise more thrills in Book 2 of the series. (The working title has changed so often I'm now just calling it Book 2 of Pharaohs Rising. :-)

EG, have you ever heard of the Verdi opera "Aida" which takes place in Egypt? If you haven't maybe you can find a copy of it in a library and listen to it. I know there are several passages in it which are really beautiful.

There's also at least one filming of the opera which I saw with my mother in my teens. I can still remember some of the scenes. I won't give away the story.

    Blogger Elizabeth Guest said...

anonymous~Yes, I love the music of "Aida!" I haven't seen the entire opera in years, so I didn't think of it in connection with my new series. I did listen to wonderful music while I was writing Night Life. In fact, I devoted a whole page to the music on my new web site. :-)

    Thanks for sharing!

Suzanne/Elizabeth - I love your new website. I'm not normally a vampire book reader, but I read the excerpt and now can hardly wait until the book comes out!! Gotta love alpha males that are so very sure of themselves yet have a sardonic sense of humor. And gotta love heroines that know how to keep them on their toes!! Combine that with ancient Egypt woven through modern Las Vegas, it all adds up to a winning combination!!

    Come on April 3rd...

lou~Happy to hear you like the new web site. We don't have the animation on the portal page working yet. And we're still making a few changes here and there daily, but I'm really thrilled with the design Cissy Hartley did for me!

My vampire hero isn't the typical vampire hero at all. I hope you like Adrian/Seti as much as I do.

April 3rd is just around the corner!
