My friend, Patricia Sargeant, did a blog that fascinated me.
Her blog was 3 weeks ago at www.pinkladiesblog.com and she flattered me a lot, but that's not the point. It was such a fun blog!
So I'm stealing it. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The point of the blog was things that other people might not know about you, that could be surprising.
For instance, Patricia was surprised at the music I prefer. Like KORN and Drowning Pool and Rob Zombie...

I'm surprised that super sweet, soft-spoken Patricia could ever utter a curse word, but I have it on good authority that she does indulge on occasion.
(Personally, I can't imagine anyone in this biz who doesn't get fired up enough on occasion to fry the air!Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket )
So what is surprising about you? Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

On my end, yeah, I love really hard loud music with a strong beat. Almost all my choices are male bands/singers, although a lot of times I enjoy Macy Gray, and I loved Janis Joplin.

Another suprising thing from my past...
Back in my super young, super skinny days, I worked for a well known factory and ended up being their first female material handler. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Yeah, what a distinction!
I have to admit, with all the heavy boxes and lifting, I got help from the guys on occasion. They were all super nice and accepting of a young woman in their all-male domaine.
I think it was the only time in my life that I had noticable biceps.

Initially my job was standing at an assembly line, packing shampoo into boxes. We rotated stations on the line, but man oh man, was it boring! I'm not good at standing still. Never have been.

When the offer to work in the back came up, I volunteered. Anything was better than the line, and I've always enjoyed male camaraderie more than female.
Sorry, but it's true.
The "Powers that be" jumped on the chance to have a female in the ranks. It even got written up in the paper, which was great exposure for them and their "fair practices."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketHere's omething else that many people don't know - all 3 of my sons modeled when they were very young. I think my oldest was about 6 or 7, then the middle son was 4 and the youngest 3.

They were in newspaper ads mostly - you know, the ads for clothing stores. I had very cute boys who were extremely well behaved and good at direction.
They LOVED being in front of a camera.

My oldest even did a commercial for the amusement park "Kiddieland" in Chicago. I'm not sure if Kiddieland is still around, but I can recall the jingle that played in the commerical. He had to eat so much ice cream for the shoot that he went about a year not wanting it anymore.

As my sons got older, they chose sports over modeling, and that was that. But while they did it, they were well paid!

Speaking of sports - I'm a lousy athlete. I can't throw a ball, can't run fast, and I was one of those kids who hid during gym when they made us play an organized game. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket I'd claim to be sick sometimes - anything to avoid sports!

HOWEVER... I was always pretty good at water-skiing. Not quite as good as my sister and younger brother, but I could do some tricks (with special skis) and a disk (round board that you "skiied" on,) and I could slalom with ease.
I learned to ski when I was 6 years old.
I love the water, but now those murky lakes sort of scare me. These days, it's in the water, grab the robe, and I yell "Hit it!" so I can ON the water instead of IN it.
The faster I'm on the skiis and out of the water, the more I like it.

So what about you sometimes surprises your friends or acquaintances?
What surprising things are in your past, or in your present?
Happy Friday everyone!

G'morning Lori!
Hmmm, interesting information about you and great blog.

Surprises.

People are surprised that I'm old enough to have kids that are 19 and 16.

It surprises people that I'm adopted as my family all resemble each other.

It's usually a surprise to others that I've been in the male dominated construction industry for 22 years.

Surprising things in my past that may surprise others.

I played free safety on a tackle football (all girl's) team in high school.

I was in a couple of fist fights in high school.

Presently, not too much surprising about me, I'm pretty much an open book. Shocking in itself, I know.... lololol.

Happy, happy Friday! YaY!

Something no one knows about me? I was a huge party girl in my (very, very much) younger days. No, I wasn’t slutty or a tramp, but I liked to have fun. Drinking, smoking, going to every rock concert that came to Ohio – Ted Nugent, Nazareth, AC/DC, Boston, Bob Seger, Golden Earring, Foreigner, Rush, and the list goes on. I was still a (somewhat) good girl – went to church every Sunday with my parents who, bless their hearts, were too naïve and trusting to know what was going on, and I did lots of volunteer work. I've never been arrested, although I did get caught drag racing one time when I was 16. Married my “bad boy” boyfriend at 19 and almost 28 years of marriage and two beautiful daughters later, we have, needless to say, matured and mellowed so much that those days don’t seem possible, almost like an out of body experience. I’m most ashamed of the smoking, what an ugly, horrible thing to do to my body, but thankfully my ignorance was short-lived. I like to think that I’ve been a good girl for long enough now to make up for those days!

Deb, your job in construction has sparked many a partial plot for me. One of these days I might pick your brain in detailed ways. LOL

Laurie D., say it isn't so! YOU were a bad girl? No, I can't even imagine it, so it can't be true.
LOL
Although, when I think of some of the hilarious things you say, I suppose it's mildly possible...

HUGS!

Hey, Lori! Technically, I don't think you're stealing the blog idea since you were the inspiration for it. KORN! I'm *never* getting over that one. LOL! Well, since I spilled my guts a couple of weeks ago for my post, you know all my secrets. :) Co-workers are still surprised that I write romance since during the day I write corporate reports. Nothing remotely romantic about those. LOL! And I do let 'er rip with a choice curse now and again. But, hey! A woman's gotta let her hair down once in a while. Oh, and I've been known to sing show tunes in public parks. For no reason. But that will be our little secret. ;)

Deb, you might be interested to know that my 16 yr old granddaughter played defensive tackle for a youth assn. She also played offense on the front line. She's little but mighty.

Something people would probably be surprised to know about me since I'm 68 and more than zaftig, is that I was homecoming queen in my senior year of high school. Also, I got my driver's license at age 15. You could do that in TX back in the 50's if you lived in the country. Other things people would be surprised (shocked)to know about me I'm not telling here or anywhere else. LOL

Interesting topic. You can never tell by looking what is in a person's past.

Lori,

You're welcome to la-la-la through the vastness of empty space in my brain anytime... hopefully there's something in there...lol.

Margaret, I've played football for years, non-organized, with my brothers and lotsa friends, I love the sport but... erm... it's getting a little painful to play at 40...lol. Our high school had one game in our junior and one game in our senior years. The girl Seniors played the girl Juniors. I played free safety both years and loved it. They did away with it after I graduated because so many girls were injured... lol... (they were the sissies...shhhhh).

Lori, have you ever listened to Godsmack? They're my favorite "heavier" band... but I also dig Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and Disturbed. *gasp!* Oy, my kids think I'm nuts, too. You guys aren't alone ;-)

Secrets, huh? I'm an open-book type of personality, so my close friends know a lot about me. LOLOLOLOL Probably more than they really want to know.

Let's see...At the age of 12, I wanted to be an opera singer. I was a cheerleader in junior high. I was a finalist for homecoming queen in college. I once danced the hula for a fund-raiser. (I practiced for weeks to get it right.) This is all so NOT me and sounds really boring.

How about I love blue undies. :-)

Lori -- I think what people are most suprised to hear about me is that I used to write and shoot training films for the submarine Navy. I was also an advertising copywriter (writing things like Chinese beer commercials), used to mingle with celebrities like Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood at Washington, DC fundraisers, and had my wedding reception covered by People Magazine. (Long story; explanation is on my Web site: www.MarciaJames.net) I used to snow ski a lot and participated in a celebrity downhill ski race for the March of Dimes. Lately my life has been tamer, although I did pet a dolphin in January. ;-)

I love disco music esp the Bee Gees. But I do like other types as well.

I think I am pretty boring overall..
Not wild like that Laurie D. LOl

I did go out to bars etc in my 20's but now its hard to believe I would go out several nights a week.

Dfender, I'm a football fan, too. When I was in junior high, I wanted to play defensive end for an NFL team. Does your screen name have anything to do with your joy of the sport?

Judy F, the Bee Gees! Wow. Not only could they sing, but they wrote tons of beautiful songs.

So, Lori, how big of a bar tab are you willing to run for me to sing those show tunes? LOL!

LOL Patricia, I'll add to the "Patricia Performs Showtunes in Public" kitty... I'd love to see that... hey, I could be talked into singing along too.

Anyway, my screen name is actually my first initial and my last name...lol. I find it interesting ;-)

When I was a kid I wanted to play free safety, first at Ohio State and then in the NFL... ha! At 5'0" as a grown up my chances were nil from the get-go, let alone being a "girl".

Elizabeth Lowell, you are SOOOO not boring! I love the idea of you being a fisher woman. :-) Fascinates me!

EG, blue undies? LOL. I favor white. Now THAT'S boring! But way cool about being a cheerleader and runner up for Homecoming Queen. I was (am) far too shy for anything like that!

Marcia, you are ALWAYS fascinating. I LOVE the photos of you with celebs on your site!

Judy, I can't picture you in a bar! Okay, maybe line dancing with a lot of other yahoos from Cinci... LOL But other than that, I see you in the bookstore. It suites you!

Patricia, I'll have to slip you a mickey, since I don't frequent bars. LOL. No wait! Maybe at National (not this year, but another) I could get you to one of those little open space bars near the lobby. Then we could ALL see you singing show tunes! LOL

dfender, I'd often wondered about your name too. When you mentioned football, my mind when the same route as Patricias. ;-)

Happy Friday all! It's been a BEAUTIFUL day!

I'm boring. Y'all all have way more fun than I ever did! I've sang (and was the soloist) for an all female accapella group when I was in my early 20's.
I write poetry and book reviews (all for my own and friends entertainment). I met my husband when I was 16, married at 18 and have been married for over 13 years now. Because I'm so shy, most people don't know I have a wicked sense of humor.
Those are the most interesting thing about me.

Things people may or may not know ... I was a cheerleader in high school. Was the tiniest so I would be at the top of pyramids or doing a full split at the end of our routine.

I am a materials engineer and went to a very male heavy school for university. Had a love/hate relationship with that -the ratio of guys to gals - 8:1 This should have made it easy to get a date. Don't count on it.. the guys wanted to go out with gals from the local all women's schools (chauvinists).

Lori,
My screen name confounds most. My name is actually Deb Fender and I enjoy the "dfender" play on my name though... football, boxing, patriotism, etc. Uh. Underwear. Discussing underwear. I wear boxer/briefs. I know, I know...

I guess some people are surprised when they see me and my hubby and I tell them that I was the president of the nbsb club before I met him - that stands for "no boyfriend since birth", Bong became my boyfriend when I was 30 and he was my first boyfriend.

I got my very first license this year (I'm 35).

I read a book a day sometimes more and sometimes I can finish a book in one sitting.

With my first 2 answers it kinda shows that I started somewhat late.

Brandy, singing accapella guarantees you can't be boring. That is TOUGH to do!
I met my hubby the 3rd day of our sophomore year of high school, we married right out of high school, and this June we'll have been married 29 years.

Ann M., I'm fascinated by anyone who was a cheerleader! Go you! It had to have taken nerves of steal to be on a pyramid!

Pia, I don't think you started late. You were just choosy and waited for the perfect guy. ;-)

I've never pumped my own gas. Hubby or one of my sons has always kept my car full. I don't know how that came about, and I never asked for it, but it dawned on me one day that I'd never done it.
Now isn't THAT strange!?

Hey, anyone curious about the UFC type fighters that I have in my current series... you can watch a top-notch competition tonight (Saturday) for free.
Because the fight is in Manchester, Spike TV is making it free for viewers in the US and Canada. 9:00.
The rest of the world has to watch it on Pay-per-view.
Mirko Cro Cop, one of my absolute faves, will be competing.

Hugs to all!

Nothing overly suprising about me. Pretty much what you see is what you get.

It does seem to suprise people that I have grandkids.

I love to target shoot and for not getting to practice any more than I do, I'm not to bad. Sure have shocked some of DH's bragging hunting/shooting buddies.

I'm basically pretty shy but I love people watching and since I handle the author signings at the store now, I've had to learn to join in and chat. And I have to say I'm really enjoying chatting with the authors.

I always wanted a big family so I accomplished that by marrying a man with 10 siblings and a zillion aunts, uncles, cousins, etc...

Think that's about it for me.

People Imeet are usually surprised to learn I have been married for 38 years. People I have known for a long time are surprised to learn I have a temper. This works very well for me, while someone who thought they knew me very well takes 2 steps back in stunned amazement I have my way.

Fun topic! Lori, you already know I love KORN, (Metallica, 3 Days Grace, Trapt) but I also adore country music.

Hmmm, not a lot of secrets. In high school I took Shop class instead of Home Ec - hey, that's where all the cute boys were LOL. For the most part I'm pretty quiet, til I really get to know someone, then I love to tease and joke around. I have a more sarcastic sense of humor, which I keep hidden because I'm never sure if I'm offending anyone. But like NancyR, I have a temper. It rarely comes out, but when it does...no one is safe. I have a tendency to throw things.

I travel by myself a lot. One of my first trips, when I was 21, was to Finland, where I met a lot of distrant relatives. Absolutely loved it, and hope to go back one day.

I love to drive fast and that's the one area I'm competitive - I HAVE to be first.

That's pretty much it. Nothing majorly exciting LOL.

Nancy, congrats on the long marriage! 38 years - terrific!

Stacy - Finland! Wow. Very cool. Now the driving fast thing... not when I'm on the road, okay? I've always driven like the cliched old, old woman - super slow and cautious. Fast drivers scare me! LOL

Hope everyone is having a fab Sunday. I'm still bummed over the fights last night. A guy I considered almost unbeatable got his behind whomped. Totally suprising for everyone. LOL

Great topic! People are so surprising. :-)

I like to play role playing games (a la Dungeons and Dragons).

I'm a professional vampire (Med Lab Tech) and have had men pass out in the middle of a collection (it's almost always men who do this). It's not easy to keep a 200 lb man in the seat while you've got a needle in his arm.

I can watch an autopsy in person without blinking an eyelash and eat pizza right after, but watching ER on TV makes me queasy.

I'm addicted to the Discovery Channel.

Cheers, Julie

Hmm, I'm not sure what people find surprising about me. I doubt most of them know that I have 1000s of books. Also, most people think, still, that I'm younger than I am. And my favorite music is really classical music as in Beethove, Brahms, Sibelius, et al.

I know one thing that surprised a number of people about my mother and perhaps about me, is that we both love the spare Scandinavian line of furniture. No flowered chintz (or whatever it is) or the like to be seen anywhere.

Since I haven't had many visitors lately because of crowded quarters and then moving around, I really don't know what would surprise people about me. I guess I'll find out as soon as I can dare let anyone in to visit me.

Back in the day when he would come on stage playing the bagpipes barefoot wearing nothing but a sequined kilt, I would just about die. I was like a teenager at a N'Sync concert or something.
