Jayne Drinks One Last Toast to SquawkRadio

By now I'm sure most of you have heard the sad news but for those who have been out of the loop, I regret to report that a disaster of monumental proportions has occurred in blogland. The chicks at www.squawkradio.com have pulled the plug on their blog.

Yes, no less an insider than the infamous reporter, Kitty Kuttlestone, tells me that those fabulous authors who created what came to be known as The Destination Author Blog -- Christina Dodd, Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, Teresa Medeiros, Elizabeth Bevarly, and Connie Brockway -- have flown the coop. Seems like they want to spend more time writing their books. (Gee, now there's a concept).

The thing is, these folks pretty much wrote the book (or at least an article in Romance Writers Report) on how to create a successful author blog. They created something very special over there at squawk radio and we Quills never hesitated to, uh, borrow their ideas whenever possible.

Sure, the Quills had a few issues with the Chicks. There was that awkward week when they tried to take over RWQ and we were forced to retaliate. And there was that notorious squawk soiree at the annual Romance Writers of America conference last summer. Yes, the Quills did crash the party and it is true that we were not in formal attire. And of course there was that unfortunate incident involving the Green Ghost Margaritas. But, really, you can't blame us for getting Kitty Kuttlestone drunk. Let's be honest, she arrived for the interview already three sheets to the wind.

Still, there are some good memories and we here at RWQ will miss the Squawkers, although I understand that they will still pop into their old blog on occasion to keep folks up to date on their new releases, of which I guess there will be a lot more since they will now have more time to write books. (Gee, now there's a concept).

And so, we here in Quill Land are drinking one last Green Ghost Margarita toast to the Squawkers. We wish them lots of freed-up writing time so that they can create more wonderful books. (Gee, now there's a concept).

Interestingly, this is not the first high profile blog to go down in recent weeks. It is all enough to make one wonder if perhaps author blogs are no longer the next "new thing". Things evolve fast with authors and readers on the Internet. Two years ago, for example, there were very few book "trailers" at authors' websites. Now lots of authors offer them. And remember the old author bulletin boards? A lot of those have disappeared.

So the question becomes, what will be the next "new thing" designed to create author-reader communities online? Any ideas? As noted above, we Quills are always happy to borrow new ideas, regardless of the source.

Well, I certainly hope you will not follow that example. I know lots of writers and others who've now been caught up in MySpace and have virtually stopped blogging. I don't know if any of you are at MySpace.

The last week on this blog has already, unfortunately, shown a few cracks. Everybody is so busy and then feels obligated to write something for the blog as well. Once it's a chore, I think it becomes less fun and it's harder to find the time.

I really don't know how you come up with all the wonderful ideas for the blog. I must say that I myself have been to very few blogs in the last year. It's not that I'm not interested but like you ladies, I have far too many other things I feel I have to do: like unpacking all my bits and pieces and finding places to put them; reading the books that I want to read; stop fighting my computer for "airtime" before it once again freezes on me.

I'd hate to do without your blog. It's one of the very few I've really kept up on to any degree. But as I say, it shouldn't be a chore, just another thing that *has* to be done. We all have enough of the *must-dos* in one form or another.

It would be nice if you could/would blog just when you feel like it, when there's something you really feel like telling some friends or like-minded people about. Or if you feel as if you'd like a little wider group to help you solve some issue. Or reporting on a trip or the like.

My life is very dull and I usually can't get a conversation started. Yet reading this blog helps to stimulate my mind and think of and about various issues. Maybe, if you allowed, some of us could bring up some issues that are not necessarily connected to writing that we'd like to discuss either as mystery bloggers or as ourselves.

These are just some things sort of off the cuff. For instance, I recently read a book (non-fiction) that deeply moved me and I wonder what my American friends think of it. The basic premise does not relate only to you but to everyone in the developed world but the author starts the whole ball rolling with American politics. Now that may be a no-no for some people but in this case, the issues definitely will affect everyone. I know that discussion boards can be used for this but the two that I'm on occasionally never get to any nitty-gritty. Some of the comments Heather made at Christmas become important in the light of this book.

To a very large degree, reading is my world and I feel comfortable with the authors I've come to know. Some of the other issues that came up during "The 12 Days of Christma" made a big impact on me and I'd love to explore them more.

I'll stop my comments here. Others will have other solutions and proposals.

I too enjoyed the Squawkers from time to time and am sad to see them go especially after they just celebrated their 2nd anniversary.

Jayne, meant to mention that I got "The River Knows" at the library on Saturday. So this one came faster than "White Lies". I hope to get into it this week. I think I read "White Lies" less than a month ago.

We also have quite a list of books that have been on order since February that the library still hasn't got. Weird.

Sorry, here I am again. Just reread your part about the book trailers. I can't even watch those because most of them depend on programs my computer doesn't have. And I certainly have no sound because my speakers are still in "limboland" aka basement storage. I think I'll be lucky to find them by next year.

What I can see of the trailers, I'm not sure if they are anything more than a popular new invention. I'm getting so tired of all the movement on the computer that I generally shut off all the images and movement that I possibly can. The same with sound. Doctors and others have been talking for some time already about sound pollution and for me it's really true. Trying to find a quiet spot in the city is nigh impossible. Maybe it's just called old age.

Jayne: Promotional stuff comes at us like Brit rainstorms. I can only judge by what I actually respond to myself. I enjoy a good blod, I like interaction with readers.

I like the Quills. What a fabulous group! And I like it that the blogs are not totally stuffed with self-promotion. Of course we're here, together, because we're writers (who happen to be friends, too, thank goodness) and we intend to spread the word about our stories. But, speaking for myself, I don't have to keep shoving my books at people.

By the way, I do hope you've bought your copy of TARGET by now--Lori, I'm sending you a copy for the treadmill:)

Ranurgis--are you suggesting there were cracks in my nudist piece? I'm devastated and will try to do better next time:) I'm hampered by an occasionally bizarre train of thought.

Jayne--I heard about some sort of promo where writers are sending instant messages to a big group, inviting people, "individually" to come to a chat or signing, or just to pop out and buy a book. Can't tell you how much I dislike this idea. Sounds like an imposition to me.

I know Lori is on MySpace, but our Lori handles bunches and bunches of things with spark and grace. I just don't want to hurry my progression into a wheelchair--or a straightjacket.

Hugs, Stella

I can’t begin to hazard a guess as to what the next ‘in’ thing will be. I enjoy the few blogs I visit, but if they’re heavy on graphics I generally don’t make it more than once a month - lots of graphics takes way too long to download on a land line with a pitifully slow connection. I do [finally] have the programs I’d need for the trailers, but they are sooo slow, it’s unbearable. Besides, even my new computer tends to terminate the connection if it thinks there’s nothing coming in. Doubling the besides, it frustrates me no end to read just a teaser when I can’t go buy the book, but have to wait maybe a year for it to be recorded for the Talking Book and Braille Library - if I’m lucky and it is chosen to be recorded.

I like authors’ websites, but some of my favorite authors just don’t have them. I imagine in most cases it’s more a matter of privacy than lack of time. And some of them do have individual blogs, but when there are upwards of 150+ comments, there’s no way I can keep up, not even with my large font. Or they switch blog engines or whatever they are, and then the font just won’t enlarge, no matter what I do.

Back in the old newsgroup days I used to follow some of the author groups, but they got too weird. The fans seemed to be more like raving lunatics than fans, and they’d take a favorite character as a nick - then someone would disagree with someone else about what the author actually meant [heaven forbid it might have simply been entertainment] and a flame war would start.

If there was any one thing I would suggest, it would be that there would be something more like a roundtable once a month or so, when all of us commenters could have a chance to suggest a topic. There are some things I’d like to know that I can’t just go to a library and pick up a book to find out - the books are there, but I can’t read them, nor can I afford to get a subscription to them on line [thinking here of The Literary Marketplace] when it costs over 300.00/year.

I do hope the Quills won’t decide to cave in and drift away. It’s one of my favorite places to visit, and it gives me a chance to escape my own personal reality for at least a little while.

I'm responding backward - typical of me. LOL
Karibear, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of a roundtable! Go with it!
I'm officially suggesting it to the Quills asap. :-) Will keep you posted.

Yeah, I'm on Myspace -thrice! LOL
I have my Lori Foster myspace at www.myspace.com/mostlymam (and that name is because it started out strictly for family, and quickly evolved when readers "found" me.
Then I have my new adventure under www.myspace.com/llfoster
And lastly, a group of us... I've lost count of the number, are together as authors posting whatever, and whenever, at www.myspace.com/romanceauthors
Oh, and I have my ultra cool galleria which is a virtual chat room. I LOVE it. I'll be doing a chat there (with some of my book heroes showing up) after my June event.

What's new? Well, those virtual booktours where authors do interviews available on the net... But I don't fully understand them yet so I don't want to do that yet. LOL

The booktrailers are loads of fun and reasonably priced. I know some readers (like Ranurgis) who don't have the functions on their computers necessary to use them, but they get so much attention at other places, like Myspace and Borders to name a few, that they're more than worth it.

The reader/author interaction thing I do that I love the most if my get together. :-D

I'm bummed that the Chicks are disbanding. But I do understand.
We should tell them that whenever they have a blogging idea, they should come and visit us, and then someone from Quills will get a break. LOL

Oh, and Stella - ::::SCREAM:::: Thank you for sending me Target! You're too nice. I most seriously would have bought a copy! But I appreciate that you're nice enough to send me one. I hope you signed it!

HUGS to all,

Lori - who isn't checking for typos even though I typed this uber fast, so be kind everyone. I'm still lagging from an AWESOME Memorial Day party yesterday. Today is just for my kids and grandson.

Renurgis: Hope you enjoy The River Knows. I do understand about the problems some people have viewing the trailers. But they are certainly becoming very popular.

Karende: Don't worry, the Quills aren't going anywhere just yet. It was just that the loss of the Squawkers put me into a reflective state of mind. I love your idea of a once-a-month roundtable where people could ask questions of the Quills.

Lori, I agree that the roundtable is now an official proposal and I'm officially going for it, too. We'll have to figure out how to handle it in practical terms but I like the idea. I'll email you and the other Quills about it separately so we can discuss it.

Stella: I agree with you, that instant message thing doesn't sound very nice at all!

Here's my toast to those fabulous Squawkers. We'll miss your wit, your thoughtful commentaries, and your laugh-out-loud observations on life, not to mention your alternative recipes for "Greenies," as I've nicknamed the Green Ghost Margaritas. (Theirs seem to involve adding eggs. Or maybe it was "laying eggs.")

And, of course, we'll miss that ravishing creature Kitty Kuttlestone, too.

Au revoir!

Along with the Squawkers, I understand that sometimes unhappy decisions have to be made.

Here's to green ghost margaritas!

Geez. I need a couple of GGM's right about now. *frets*wrings hands* Ha! Nah, not really...LOL.

I really hope the Quills don't ixnay this blog. I know, it's a selfish thought. It's become part of my weekly routine to jump in here and connect with, not only the Quills, but all the posters...erm... postees...uh... you know what I mean. I think. You Quill girls are not only terrific authors but are witty, wise and damn funny. *read "sucking up" here* LOL! But truthful anyway.

Seriously, it's sad that the Squawkers have "retired" their blog. I'm sure their blog-reading-members are sad, too.

I'm notoriously un-creative so I don't have any ideas for reader/author connecting, but I'm up for anything that allows me a little look into the lives of, and conversation with, authors that I admire, just like the Quills.

Thanks ladies, you are oh-so-appreciated! Happy Memorial Day! Thank a vet :-)

No, no. The cracks I meant had nothing to do with going "nekid".

It was that during the last week or two several people barely managed to get their blogs on site because they were too busy for one reason or another.

As I mentioned, I knew right away that actually writing a blog myself was not a good idea. I know you can borrow from other people if you're not imaginative enough yourself but I don't even have anyone with whom I can talk about romance novels of any kind and which would maybe spark a few ideas or questions. Of course, I'm not a writer either. But then you came up with your collections, shoes, handbags, and things like that and that opens up totally different areas to talk about.

Anybody want to discuss computers and their vagaries and how to cure them?

Thinking of shoes, have any of you heard about a book called "It's All About the Shoes" and one called "Mr. Darcy's Diary". These books can be won if you're lucky. If you agree to let me, I'll post the site in a comment.

No way would I discuss computer vagaries! My NEW one, the one with all the neat programs - a lot of which I can't use because of the slow dial-up - is beginning showing some of the same peculiarities of my old one. I'm starting to wonder if I'm an MPD and don't know it. I don't have trouble with any other electronics, though...

Jayne,

With regards to your question about the next "new thing" like ideas to create author-reader communities online...I noticed that at sites like youtube.com for instance, there are some authors whose video interviews or book signings are available there. Some of my other favorite authors that I have seen at youtube are Sherrilyn Kenyon and Sophie Kinsella. I tried to see if any of the Quills had any videos posted, well maybe soon. I'm not sure if this would be another idea, but I know that you and Stella give great talks about writing if you both agree and if and when you have a schedule of that talk, I can take a video of it and post it online. youtube is such a fun community, well, there are a lot of other sites out there where you can post videos for free.

Thanks Lori, our 3 puppies will be turning 1 this June (they're not baby puppies anymore). My husband and I are so happy that Bogo (the Chihuahua on the picture) grew! When we got him he wasn't even a pound and was being bullied by his sister, now he's about 3-4 lbs. I'll try to post a different picture my 3 puppies. By the way, I recently read Caught in the Act and I loved it! I'm about to read Stella's book Target then by tomorrow I'll start reading Murphy's Law.

Jayne, last night I spent hours just watching videos from youtube. They are so entertaining and fun, when you have just time check it out.

Ah, Jayne, it's been a lot of fun, especially the party at Christmas when Elizabeth wore her breastplate and horned helmet.

And we can hardly blame you for Kitty's sleazy under-the-table selling of Squawk trinkets. We can, however, bequeath you Kitty. After all, the Quills deserve her. Just remember, she's cheap and easy, just fling her a few shots and a few well-endowed boy-toys, and she's happy. (and who isn't?)

But don't worry, I'll be hanging around!

No, really! I'll be here!

As for the next new thing, how about an old thing? With listmania at Amazon and writer's of kinds now doing whatever there (plogging?) and the pre-order paradise that Amazon is, it's where we go to share writer's, wish lists and list mania. Since I got Jayne's last, what 6? hardcovers from Amazon and my pre-order's have become a science (they don't qualify for the free shipping unless your willing to wait and I never am) I tend to only hit Border's for paperbacks. I must admit, I don't know when Amazon became the place where me and my friends share books via wishlists but in the last two years the amount of time I spend on Amazon has grown from a couple times a month to nearly every day. I call my brother and we cruise the website together, since he moved to Iowa for his job, it brings us close and keeps us in touch. Last but not least, customer reviews, which is what got me hooked on Amazon, that and trying to buy presents for people many states away. The next big thing in writing? Amazon and I suspect it will just get bigger.
Oh, and blogging should just be for your fun. Use your websites to push your books. I visit them for all my favorite writers, my favorites file for saved authors websites, huge and I check each one out once a month on a rotating basis. You don't need to search out ways to stay in touch with fans, we are searching for you. In a non-stalker, non-creeepy way/ Can I have Kitty Kuttleston, I got a big frisky tom who loved her.
