Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

A Quill Quickie: What are the three things you enjoy most about summer?

Colleen Coble:

1. Ice cream (But if it doesn't have chocolate in it, don't even bother me.)

2. Summer writers conferences.

3. The continual hope of finding a diet that works. (Yes, you're right, two of those things are in direct conflict. I like to kill people in my books so it only makes sense I'm a little schizophrenic!)

ABOMINATION. Hardcover suspense. Colleen Coble. Thomas Nelson. August 2007.

Natalie Eggeman

1. Walking outside without a jacket.

2. Eating s'mores by the campfire.

3. More creative energy.

Janet Dean

Only three is tough, but here goes:

1. Licking ice cream cones. (Making the ice cream last as long as the cone.)

2. Sitting on the swing with my husband on lazy summer nights listening to bullfrogs in the pond.

3. Watching our sun-kissed grandchildren romp and swim at the neighborhood pool. (Smiling, proud, and a touch sad that goggles and the backstroke have replaced baby rings and sunbonnets.)

ORPHANED HEARTS. Janet Dean. Steeple Hill Love Inspired Historical. September 2008.

Liz Flaherty

1. Not wearing coats, long pants, or--most of the time--shoes.

2. Living in the country. Not that we don't live in the country the rest of the year, but it's better in summer.

3. The sensory part of it. There's something bold and fearless about summer. The colors are more vibrant, the sounds happier and more musical, and the smells are memory-creating in themselves.

THE DEBUTANTE'S SECOND CHANCE. Liz Flaherty. Silhouette Special Edition. September 2007.

Shirley Jump

1. Spray on tans. (I feel like a real-live Barbie doll, except without the cool hair, nice shoe collection and impossible waistline.)

2. Pedicures. (Nothing says spoil-me like a pedicure. And it's a reason to buy new shoes!)

3. School being out. (The kids may drive me crazy some days, but having them home is a treat and a half!)

REALLY SOMETHING. Shirley Jump. Zebra. December 2007.

Thanks to the wonderful women from my local chapter of Romance Writers of America who shared a little bit of summer with us. (You can tell we live in the Midwest: land of freezing cold winters and long hot summers!)

Inquiring Minds want to know, of course: What are the three things you enjoy most about summer?

Happy July!

These are three things that came immediately to my mind:

Drinking Margaritas on the deck

BLTs with tomatoes from my garden

Flip-flops - gotta love 'em.

My Big Three for summer:

1. Sugarfree popsicles, especially the kind that have the Lifesaver flavors. Low calorie and low carb. (Only downside is a bright orange tongue.:-)

2. Actually getting to go out in the evening while it's still daylight. (I LOVE EDT.)

3. Flowers, flowers, and more flowers!

LOL EG, Midwesterners (is that a word?!?) Unite!

What I enjoy most about Summer
Not an essay

1. The first summer morning waking up with the windows open and the breeze billowing the curtains and smelling of WARM WEATHER!

2. Fishing!

3. Being barefoot AKA Pedicure Season.

Hey, what can I say? I eat ice cream and popsicles all year long, who needs Summer for that? LOL

Happy Summer Wednesday!

EG: Yes. Of course, it is, Deb. (Being a resourceful bunch, we Midwesterners have been known to make up words if necessary. :-)

Holly suggested: Drinking Margaritas on the deck.

Sigh. I'm doing low carb this summer (meaning no margaritas) but I can always dream!

May I also suggest BLATs: Bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato. Yum!

EG - I hadn't thought of avocado... hmm I will definitely give it a go.

Just a thought about those nasty carbs - make your margaritas the only ones for the day!

The three things I enjoy about summer are...
1. Fun Summer Movies and concerts -movies like Transformers, Live free and Die Hard, Harry Potter, Ratatoulle, etc. and concerts like the biggest one held in 7 continents for Live Earth.
2. Walking our Chihuahuas who love love love the sun.
3. Ice cold Talking Rain Lemon Flavor (it's a local carbonated lemon flavored water that has only 5 calories).

Fresh air blowing through the doors and windows.

My silk trees all leafed out.

Mephisto sandals.

Sitting on the our big front porch watching the neighborhood in summertime mode. (last night that meant a fire truck, lights flashing, that stopped down the block. Luckily the firemen all came out packing up their bags and didn't call for the paramedic wagon to haul anyone away, so that's a Good Thing.

Whoops. That's four.

Oooh, yes, Holly, the concerts! We went to one at Chateau St. Michelle winery on the first and it was so great to picking on the grounds and dance in the grass to Chris Isaak.

Pia, I can't wait to get to more of the summer movies. Saw "Oceans 13," but I have a long, long list I want to see once I'm not working so many hours. :-)

I LOVE going to the movies any time of year.

Okay, now I'm lime-green (remember the popsicles?) with envy! You saw Chris Isaak in concert this summer? Sigh.

I love waking up to sunshine, too! (Conversely, I dislike waking up in the dark and avoid it like the plague by getting up at the "crack" of 8:00 in the winter. :-)

I wish you all had come up with this last summer. So far, this one has been one unmitigated disaster after another.

Normally, I like:

[1] Fudgesicles
[2] Watermelon
[3] Fireflies

and lots of other stuff, but you said 'three' so there's three.

karibear~some summers--some seasons--are like that, aren't they?

As a writer I sometimes miss whole seasons while I'm holed up in my office. I don't mind if it's winter, but I sure hate missing summer--which I have the past couple of years. Definitely going to rework my schedule for next year.

Off to get a popsicle,

1. I like not having to bundle up in heavy coats. However, I'm "allergic" to drafts and therefore usually keep some kind of jacket or shawl with me.

2. Being able to open a window and have some fresh air come into the nooks and crannies even if the air around my place is heavily laden with exhaust from huge trucks, noisy motorcycles, overland buses, etc.

3. It's certainly not what it used to be like when I lived in a real house with lawns, trees, bushes rather than above a store set on a very busy street and on a property where I am lucky to find even a weed growing.
