Kickin' back...

You've all heard me shouting from the rooftops that I'm done, done, done with my latest manuscript. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket My next book (2nd in my SERVANT series under the name L.L.Foster) isn't due until December. That means I've had time to just kick back and relax and do a little of this, a little of that.

My blog today is a random scattering of the happenings in the life of the Foster clan. I'm sort of all over the place on topics, but I figured we'd just converse, catch up, say hey... that sort of thing. So here are the things I've been doing, thinking, watching...

Hope I don't bore you!

First, my son now has a new kitten, and I'm so proud of him!
Here's the scoop: This is the son who recently married.
He and his wife have one more year of classes at EKU, then Jake will have the police academy, etc... So they're attending school while they both work at a pizza place. Busy, Busy.
Bev is a waitress, Jake delivers.
The other night he had trouble finding a house, and so he went up to the door to check on the address. No one was home, but he found something horrible.
Abandoned kittens that had perished in the driveway.
Disgusted and upset, he started to leave when, wonder of wonders, one tiny little "guy" mewled. Of course, Jake rescued it.

In between deliveries, he bought an eye dropper and special milk and started trying to feed the starving little "guy." That was a Sunday evening.

The next day, in between classes, they took "him" to the vet and that afternoon, Jake called to say, "Mom, he's not a boy, he's a girl."

Cracked me up.

Anyway, the little darling was dehydrated and has worms (ewwww), but the vet is confident that with lots of care, she'll be fine. Jake says she's already up and about and annoying his big ole lazy cats.
Remember, Jake and Bev already have Liger and Gremlin, BIG kitty cats:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

But the new baby, who Jake says only weighs a couple of ounces, is fitting in.

Allen suggested they name her "Cactus" because... are you ready?

She was all dried up.

Yeah, that was bad, but funny. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Bev named her Foxy, because she's adorable, but Jake says she might change it, given how mischevious the little girl kitty is.

In other news... I devoured a new television series! Yep, Season One. Gulp, and it's gone!
You see, I wait until
1) I've finished a book and need the downtime and
2) the first season is on DVD so I can glom.

So I'm watched Dexter - and it was FASCINATING!

Dexter is a serial killer, but he's not a bad guy.
Intriguing, huh!?
Before he was adopted by a loving family, terrible things happened to him to make him the way he is. His adoptive dad, a cop, taught him how to deal with his "tendencies." Instead of hurting the innocent people, Dexter is a serial killer who hunts...

I do love this...

Serial Killers.

Is that awesome or what?

I couldn't get enough of this show, and I even dreamed about it. If you don't mind a little blood and gore, I highly recommend it! It'll keep you riveted!

On the domestic side, I found tile for my kitchen backsplash. Took me forever!
Man, am I picky, I guess.
It should get installed in about a month, after the ordered tiles arrive and our contractor can fit it in. I can't wait! I also changed the brand new paint color in my family room because it just wasn't right.
The painters must love me.
Here's a photo of the kitchen - you can see where the tile will go beneath the range hood. I have a little picture hanging there right now, just to fill in the space.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

What do you think? It's hard to get a clear image of the hickory wood (oak for the stove cabinet and range hood) corian countertops and granite on the island. But can you see why choosing tiles wasn't easy! I like things to coordinate and there's a lot going on in the kitchen.

I've also seen several movies.
INVASION - it was okay, but why did Nicole Kidman keep sitting down to kick back when she knew if she fell asleep, she'd turn into an alien? Ugh.

SUPERBAD - Hilarious!! Made by the same guys who did 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP. (Great titles, huh?) Anyway, I laughed myself sick.

RUSH HOUR THREE - what can I say? I adore Jackie Chan.

WAR - good movie till the end, then a total unbelievable bust.

BALLS OF FURY - Kind of dumb, with only a few yucks. Not nearly as funny as the previews made out.

My favorite lately: BOURNE ULTIMATUM. That Jason Bourne is just one incredible character! I sure hope there are more in that series.

Because even in my downtime I like to keep busy, I've had two big family gatherings with extended family, and have another planned for Monday, Labor Day. I'm sure a good time will be had by all! I love having family gather at my house. It's especially nice now that we have all ages.

Oh, something super cool that I hope you don't mind me sharing!! Good news - I got an award from BORDERS again this year. Well, they run a year behind, so while I just got it, it was for an 06 book.
Last year I received an award for "Bestselling Contemporary Romance" for THE SECRET LIFE OF BRYAN.
This year it was "Bestselling Romantic Comedy" for JUDE'S LAW.
Sweet!
Most reviewers might not like me, but I'd rather have readers on my side anyway.

And I don't know if I already dished on this, but if not...
MMAWorldwide named SIMON SAYS the "MMA Worldwide Book Of the Year."
(You can see the label they attached on the front page of my website. Makes me grin real big every time!)
The UFC is coming to my town in October and I already have my primo seats for the whole family - that is, hubby and me, and our 3 sons, and my out-of-town friend, Shana. Can't wait!

Add to all that good stuff that RT gave me 4 stars and a great review for SERVANT: The Awakening. (I usually get not-so-great reviews from everyone.)
Here it is:

"New York Times bestseller Lori Foster uses an alter ego to jump headfirstinto a dark and dangerous world where one woman stands against the demons.Foster's new heroine balances on the edge of sanity and is forced into herdemon-slaying quest by a divinely given ability. This is a gruesome story ofa young, emotionally damaged loner who copes by any means necessary."

Oh yeah, I added a TON of photos to my Myspace account, so if you're on Myspace, check it out. It's on my Lori Foster site at www.myspace.com/mostlymam

So, as you can see, I've caught up on publicity/promo stuff, watched lots of tv and movies, and all in all, enjoyed life. I could get used to chillin' like this! But alas, the time has come to an end. Soon as we wrap up Labor Day, it's back to work. Truth is, my brain is getting twitchy, so I know it's time to write!

What have you all been up to this summer?

Heard any good news lately? Any bad news?

Seen any good movies?

I hope you'll share!
Happy Friday to everyone!

Ahh... this summer... one of the hottest on record here in the middle Tennessee area and we are in a drought. The worst part has been the fact that our AC went out and we lived in this heat for a week. The same people who replaced our furnace in the coldest part of the winter came out and looked around and advised they had installed the wrong size furnace and duct work for our house back in January, and so we got a new furnace and duct work for free as well as a new AC system.

I am happily cooled again... and quite resolved that I would never have made it as a rustic pioneer woman! Ha!

I haven't been able to get out to the movies. Last one I saw was Rush Hour 3. Loved it! I went to a Michael Buble concert. He's the best! I have Eagles coming up in Oct. The only other thing I have been doing is working. (Yuck)...and counting down till the OCT ufc!

Lori, how cute about the kitten! Thats so awesome of your son.

Lori,

That is a wonderful story about the kitten; fate was certainly smiling on her that day.

LOVE Allen's name suggestion. It made me chuckle out loud. ;)

My summer hasn't been one of huge events, a lot more low key than last summer. This week, I have been back at work. We are expecting close to 70 mm of rain today into tomorrow so I am thinking that the weekend will be another quiet one. Also dog sitting for a friend so I am hoping my dog is okay with having some company for the weekend!!

LOVED Bourne Ultimatum!! This and Transformers are my summer faves... Am going to see Halloween this afternoon!!

Cbell, I made the same realization this summer! Can you imagine having this heat, and then having to "shower" with water you carried from a mostly dry creek? Oy!
Here in Ohio, we've had the long record-breaking heatwave and drought too. Other than my flowers, which I water twice a day, everything is dead, dead, dead. Even the pond is getting really low. I hope it rains soon!

Shana, now you know I have no idea who Buble is, right? LOL.
Isn't that blog by Mike Swick just the best!
www.myspace.com/mikeswick I'm so flattered! Because you're a UFC fan too, I knew you'd be as geeked as me. LOL

Lori M., yeah, I can't wait to meet the kitchen on Sunday when Jake and Bev drive up. They always bring their cats with them. Pets are welcome at my house. :-)
Can't wait!
Oh, and THANK YOU. I soooo hope you like the next SERVANT book. You can count on getting an arc again - after I've written the thing. LOL

Congrats on your awards...better late then never! LOL

Would love to see a pic of Cactus! I love cats but can't bear to have another one since I had to put my last one to sleep. Tigger was 16 and had feline lukemia. I just can't go through that again.

I just love the show DEXTER. I don't get showtime so I bought the season set. When I explained it to my husb, he kind of gave me this funny look, but he even got interested in it. I think its great. I am not only book obsessed, I'm also season set obsessed. I do plan to get HBO though when they come out with the show "True Blood", based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books.

I can't wait for Servant, its on my TBB list.

Lori, congrats on the downtime! Love your new kitchen...what does the tile look like?

Also, your son and daughter-in-law are awesome to rescue, adopt and love Foxy! What type of cat is the big one in the picture?... Looks like a Maine Coon...large, goofy, crazy and lovable (I had one and he was great...he's now is catnip heaven).

Hope your holiday is a wonderful one!

Hey Karen,
Yeah, the two cats Jake and Bev have are brothers adopted from a shelter, but the papers list them as Maine Coon. They're HUGE. So far, they're not real sure what they think of Foxy. LOL

The tile that I chose is mostly the same color as the Corian, then there's a burgundy trim the color of the walls, and a thicker tile with a flower pattern on it.
Very pretty!

Have an awesome weekend!

Lori,

Congrats on relaxing... if all that busy-ness is relaxing for you...LOL. Can't wait for your next Servant installment!

I'm gonna hafta look into Dexter 'cuz it sounds right up my alley. I dunno why I've not heard of it before now. Huh. Gonna hafta go rent season one.

Your kitchen looks great! Nice choices :-) We re-did ours a couple of years ago and I still love it.

Jake and Bev have big hearts and that little story is heart-warming. Good for all of 'em!

What have you all been up to this summer?
Working, what else? LOL. Lotsa wedding showers, baby showers, weddings, family get-togethers, etc. Mostly fun stuff. Not too much time to ride the Harley with the HHP but we're hoping to do some over the holiday weekend coming up since NE Ohio weather will be mid-70's and sunny... YaY!

I've been learning (and watching) MMA stuff, based on your recommendation. I'm getting there, girl... it's taking me some time. Ha!

I've also been attempting to learn gaelic, something I've been trying to do for years. Getting there on that, too.

Heard any good news lately?
Both kids are back in school, one in her sophomore year of college and one in his junior year of high school. YaY! Lower grocery bills! Ha!

Any bad news?
Nope, blessed mightily 'round here.

Seen any good movies?
Last good movie we watched was The Shooter with Marky Mark. Great movie. Hot lead. Rowr.

Happy Holiday Weekend-ing!

Lori, your son did a good thing, rescuing that little kitten. For all the terrible tales one hears about human cruelty and wickedness, there are always others, giving the other side; the people with love and generosity to spare, who make the world a better place.

Your kitchen is gorgeous!! Love the color of the walls.

Wow Lori,
You have been super busy and Congratulations on all your accomplishments!
It's a good thing that your son was there when he was that night to save Foxy. whew!
Last Monday I underwent another treatment of Iodine Radiation and since it had quite a lot of gamma radiation, I had to be isolated in our room for 3 days! I can only go out to go to the bathroom and get food. My clothes has to be washed 2x and separated from my hubby's. It kinda sucked but I was able to get a lot of things filed! I do hope my hyperthyroidism is all gone so we can move on to having a baby. When I took the Iodine pill my hubby kept on asking the technician if I would turn green when I got mad? Since it was also gamma that Bruce Banner was exposed to.
We haven't seen a lot of movies, but just rented a lot.
Hot Fuzz was a great action film (with the same stars and director of Saun of the Dead).
Star Dust - I love! My hubby tells me that I am not his star.
Blades of Glory - was so funny too.
Thanks and have a happy long weekend everyone. Happy labor day!

Your downtime sounds like busy fun--much of that comes from the positive way you look at life.

Thanks for sharing your happenings.

I think your daughter-in-law is really holding three cats photographically morphed into one!

Hmm--news. I look forward to finishing Cypress Nights and going on vacation in about four weeks.

Films. Hah, I finally saw The Queen and thought it was wonderful. Helen Mirren is an amazing actress.

Now I'm going to have coffee, cuddle my dog and cat and read.

Lori--Servant can't come out fast enough for me. If it was here now, I could read it tonight...

Agtigress, I trade books for donations to my local shelter, the AAF, and yesterday Allen dropped off several checks for me. He said there was a woman there, lying in a big bed with a big dog, just giving the dog some hugs.
She stayed there with him for the entire time my husband was there.
It SO touched my heart. I wish I could do that, but I'd end up bringing home every animal in the shelter. So I try to find other ways to help.
There are SUCH good people around, but you're right, more often all the focus is put on the sick folks instead of the super giving ones.
Very sad.

What a great story about the cat. So cute!

Beautiful kitchen! I'm an obsessive HGTV watcher, love home improvement stuff!

Dexter sounds awesome, that's the same guy from Six Feet Under right?!

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Superbad. When I left the theater my throat hurt so much from laughing so hard. I've never laughed so hard in my life.

Same-sies! ;)

Bourne Ultimatum was my favorite of the series!

By the way your son and daughter in law's cat is soooo big, even bigger than my 2 dogs - combined! :)

Another bit of good news is that for the first time since we got married, my husband and I finally joined a gym (that's a big leap for us).

Lori, I have a question that I have been wanting to ask you. When I read (and enjoyed reading) Say No to Joe? Well, Joe is an expert in balisong my question is how did you get the inspiration for balisong? I believe that it is a Filipino knife and when I was young I have seen a lot of guys from the province where they make it who can spin it quite amazingly. That was just my question.
Thanks again.

I don't know if this comes under good news or bad news. I was just messing around on ebay, looking at books. [I do that sometimes just to torture myself.] Anyway, I clicked on 'fiction' then had all of it listed highest price first. What a jolt! A lot - and I do mean a LoT - of those books I used to have before my house burned. I wish there was some way I could go back to insurance company now, 20-some years later, and say 'I had this and this and that, and this is what they're selling for NOW.' I'd have at the very least 500,000.00 to play with!

So the good news part is that obviously I had good taste in literature, and the bad news is that all those books are dust and ash now.

Mollie - we love home improvement stuff, too. One of my favorite things in the kitchen now is a special "lifting" shelf for my bread maker. It lifts out and is even with my counter when I use it, then folds down and disappears into the cabinet. ;-)
Our dishwasher is one of those with no buttons on the front.
Next I need a new refrigerator, just because I want a spiffier one. There's nothing wrong with my 3 year old one now. LOL

It sounds like we love the same movies! LOL on the same-sies!

Pia - actually, my son Jake is pretty tricky with a balisong knife. He used to wake in the morning and pick it up and he'd come into the family room for breakfast while flipping that thing around and doing tricks with it.
He learned to do things with a balisong that you aren't supposed to be able to do. LOL. (Like Joe, I guess.)
Jake's preoccupation with it is what inspired me to give it to Joe.
However - Jake NEVER carried it on him to school or away from the house, obviously. In fact, he liked it so much he took of his knives and replaced the blade with a key for his car, so he could keep it on him, play with opening and closing it quickly, and not be in violation of any kind. LOL

Hugs!

The last-born of the next generation in the family is an 18-year-old who also wants to be in law enforcement.

However, he had to settle for some preparatory courses at a junior college first because he was only 16 when he graduated from high school. His birthday is Dec. 21 and his older sister is even better: Dec.31. Anyway, he was too young to go to the police academy here.

I'm glad the young couple will soon be finished their studies. I can imagine that they are working really hard. Matt is too. I suppose he will be starting again this week.

I'm glad Jake was able to save the little kitty. I was trying to remember how heavy that big cat your daughter-in-law is holding is. Must be quite a difference in the sizes. Are the big ones guys?
