    Desperately Seeking Susan...'s Tunes

Boz Scaggs: Come On Home...Kris Delmhorst: Strange Conversations...John Mayer: I’m Gonna Find Another You...Janis Joplin: Piece of My Heart

I love music. I mean Really. Love. Music. But we’ve all been burned buying CDs on the strength of a song or two that we adored—only to have it turn out those were the only songs we liked on the album. Then there’s the additional problem for me of getting tired of hearing the same voice song after song, even on albums where I love most every tune.

Eva Cassidy: Dark End Of The Street...Otis Redding:These Arms of Mine...Vince Gill: The Reason Why...Bobby "Blue" Bland: St. James Infirmary

That is why, in my little piece of the world, I’m known for my medleys. I started putting them together back in the Dark Ages when the world still listened to cassette tapes. I transfered songs I liked from my cassettes to a blank tape. They have long since disintegrated and these days I use CDs and am the self-proclaimed Queen of iTunes. (Well, okay, I heard the soul mate tell his sister that's who I am, but close enough). I love the freedom of downloading just the songs I really want, particularly at 99 cents a pop instead of paying eighteen bucks for a bunch of tunes I don't want.

Paolo Nutini: Last Request...Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow: I Put Your Picture Away...Dire Straits: Brothers In Arms...Steely Dan: My Old School

I am currently up to my 22nd medley and working on number 23. My tastes are eclectic; I like everything from blues to rock and roll, country to classical, alternative to Fifties style R&B. Jazz is cool…as long as it's not the atonal type that sounds as if 6 musicians are jamming to 6 different songs. And I’m always, but always, on the lookout for a new artist or song. I collect them from all over, for while I use songs from my own collection (yes I do still buy some entire CDs) I've also discovered new talent listening to friends’ music or to what is being played in places of business. I’m not shy about asking, "Who IS that?" (Just ask the tattoo artist who was doing my permanent eyeliner to Andrea Bocelli’s Time To Say Goodbye CD). I can often run the title to ground from mere bits and pieces of a tune. Not always, of course. I still regret being so cocksure that a song playing on my car's satellite radio was Mark Knopfler singing something with the refrain Don’t Blame the Monkey that I didn’t bother to tape it on my digital recorder because I just assumed it'd be a piece of cake to track down. Now of course I can't find it. Does anybody know the song I’m talking about?

And that’s really what this blog is about. I’m appealing to everyone for more ideas to add to the Susan Andersen medley collection. Tell me some of your favorites. Music is as subjective as reading tastes, but I don’t mind taking the time to listen to a 30 second sample on iTunes. That’s one of the beauties of that place. It gives you a chance to determine if this song or that one is your cuppa Joe.

Billy Vera and the Beaters: At This Moment....America: Ride On...Stevie Ray Vaughan: Ain’t Gone ‘N’ Give Up On Love...Harry James: Harlem Nocturn
So I've listed just a few of the songs that I like. What are some of yours?

Wow, our tastes in music are sooo different! I like old acid rock, country from back when it was still called Hillbilly, folk, bluegrass... and a few specific groups/songs. There’s one called Sweet Honey in the Rock that basically does gospel a capella which I don’t care for, but they did one song called More Than a Paycheck that was an incredible social indictment. And there’s Fred Neill and Neil Diamond - I could listen to either of them hum through the phone book - Richie Havens, Buffy Saint Marie, Robbie Robertson. Then there’s the classical stuff, lots of that I like. Eclectic, that’s me.

As for the Mark Knopfler song, he did one called Punish the Monkey, but I have no idea what CD it’s on. I’m pretty sure it’s not on Brothers in Arms or Communique, I have those and I don’t remember anything like that.

My tastes are all over the place.

Artist - song title followed by album, if i know it.

Say Anything - Woe (from the Punk Goes Acoustic 2 album) it's not your usual "punk" music. for some reason this song reminds me of those old western movies. I don't know if it's on iTunes but you can listen to the song on mypace.com/punkgoesacoustic2

dierks bentley - come a little closer baby
country. shrug. not much to say, i just like it. =)

jack's mannequin - dark blue (from the everything in transit album)
Lots of energetic piano playing. I love the entire album really. Jack's Mannequin is the solo project of the singer from Something Corporate, if you know that band at all.

James Blunt - Back to Bedlam album
sad album mostly. tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10 are especially good.

Walk the Line soundtrack - I like the songs with Joaquin Phoenix and the duets with Reese Witherspoon.

Teddy Geiger - Underage Thinking album
I love all the tracks except #6, 7, 9, and 10 - those songs are just ok. (there's 12 songs)
He kinda sounds like a young John Mayer to give you an idea of his voice.

Jet - Look What You've Done (from Get Born album)
    mellow song.

Jimmy Eat World - The Authority Song (Bleed American album)
A song that's great to listen to in your car with the volume turned up. Reminds me a bit of the music from That Thing You Do for some reason. I also like the song "Sweetness" from this album.

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll
another good song to blast in the car. and sing along to! =)

Justincase Featuring Michelle Branch - Without You

    The Knack - My Sherona
    Do I need a reason?

Le Tigre - My My Metrocard
This song can sound really annoying. I find it endearing for some reason.

    Mae - Painless
Unfortunately, the first 30 seconds of this song is mostly instrumental. You may be able to hear the whole song at purevolume or something.

Nada Surf - If You Leave
Cover of the fabulous 80s song. very mellow version. I love cover songs, if done well.

Spoon - The Way We Get By
I have no idea how to describe this song other than that it feels happily quirky. there's some rhythmic piano, too.

Relient K - Be My Escape (Mmhmm album)
    very upbeat song

Ruff Endz - If I Was the One (don't know the album, but it was in the movie Centerstage)
    very sweet/sad r & b song

Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (Poses album)
Simple song really, lots of piano, but he does such a great job with these two "guilty sins" of his. He also does a lovely rendition of the Beatles' "Hallelujah", btw.

hmm. I think I better stop because I've listed way too many songs. (and this was just from quickly skimming halway through my playlist!)

Let me know what you think. =)

Karibear, that's IT--Punish the Monkey. Bless you, bless you. It's a sad state of affairs when I can't remember lyrics long enough to get from my car to my computer, but there you go. Anyhow, it appears to be a single that was just released last Tuesday, from an album of the same name that probably hasn't been released yet.

Erin, I'm familiar with the Dierks Bentley song, Joan Jett and James Blunt. Going to look up the rest when I get the chance. Thanks!

Pia, the lgudesman & Joo combination classical/contemporary vids are a hoot and Justin makes me want to shake my booty.I don't get to UTube very often, so it was nice to step out of my rut. :) Will be looking up the artists you gave me that I'm not yet familiar with as well.

    Susan,

Great music choices you've made. I love a little bit of everything from country to metal. My HHP says that my iPod has multiple personalities like it's owner...LOL.

    Try some:

    Godsmack: Voodoo, Moon Baby
    Indigenous: Nothing I Can Do
    Sara Buxton: That Kinda Day
    Joe Rohan: Pelican Dance
    The Coasters: Poison Ivy
    Metallica: One
Christina Aguilera: Ain't No Other Man

I, naturally, could go on and on but I think you'll have lots to listen to from all the suggestions I'm sure you'll be seeing here.

    Happy Friday!

I too like Carrie Underwood's Before he Cheats and Chris Daughtrey's I'm going home. One of my old favorite bands, The Eagles have a new song just released. Don't even know the name yet. Have heard it twice on the radio. It comes out in October on a 2 disc CD for, get this, $12.95! It's only going to be sold at Walmart and Sam's Club as a support for their efforts at evironmental issues. Can't wait for it to come out.

I am also a fan of the old '60's music. Love to turn up the volume and sing along at the top of my lungs....with all the windows up of course. Also love anything with Gracie Slick from Jefferson Starship. Oooh, my age is showing.

Love anything by Simon and Garfunkel, wish they never broke up.

Sheryl Crowe, Nora Jones, and on and on...

You guys are awesome--I'm going to be checking out a bunch of songs new to me and listening again to old friends. MIchiganmom, Moody Blues, of course. Truckin' is one of my faves--that takes me way back. Bob Segar is a performer whose entire CDs I tend to like...and Eric Clampton's Unplugged is another favorite.

And Queen reminded me of Queensrych's Silent Lucidity. My son performed it in a guitar solo at a music program in high school. Cough. That was a long time ago.

I'm taking off early Saturday morn and won't be back until Sunday, but keep on posting. I'll catch up and will be taking notes!

    Y'all rock.

No Neil Diamond? Heresy! Gotta have at the least Beautiful Noise, Holly Holy, Soolaimon, Sky Bird - Jonathon Livingston Seagull was a nice book, an awful movie, and had the most incredible musical score. Besides, think of all the songs he wrote that others sang. Same with Fred Neill - no one’s heard of him, but he wrote Everybody’s Talkin’ at Me, and everyone knows that one.

I love almost all things by Billy Joel. Also, Barenaked Ladies - One Week. And ya gotta love Mellencamp! Pretty much everything on his The Best That I Could Do album. Nickleback has several on their disc that I like and Bubbles by Colbie Caillat. Pretty much songs that tell a story. I'm going to have to check out some of these others, too.

I've hear of most listed by Karende, but not many listed by anyone else.

Since I got Sirius Satellite Radio two years ago, I listen to 2 comedy stations, 80s music, prime country and classic country.

I hardly ever listen to local radio, don't especially like the djs or the music any more.

    Love

Flogging Molly- an upbeat Irish band. Especially like Druken Lullabies

Tally Hall- love their whole cd but really love the song Be Born

Ok Go is a fun group especially known for their videos on you-tube. Here you Go Again is a great upbeat song

Love the whole soundtrack from the movie Once. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are the artists. The song Falling Slowly is especially lovely

One of my recent loves is Tab Benoit, a Cajun blues singer guitarist. I just saw him in concert recently and he was so talented. Songs like Fever for the Bayou, Night Train and Why are People like that are fabulous.

These are just a few of the songs/artists that I enjoy.

Any of those work for you?

I tend to like a few songs from each, but not everything from all of them. LOL

What fun, Susan! Your medley idea is fabulous. I use a remote and am constantly clicking to different CDs because there are only a few tracks I want from each one.

    Dr. John--anything.
Alan Toussaint--anything but GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY TOOT TOOT is a biggie.
    Madeleine Peroux--anything.
Blues piano--on and on and on.
Bruce Springsteen when I'm in the mood.
Josh Grobin when I'm in the mood.
Ditto for any good classical tenor.
Gimme some reggae when the sun shines.

    I need to work:)

I used to have classical movie on all the time until, shall we say, a traumatic event occurred from which I have not yet recovered. Hearing all the noise from the highway-like street behind almost all the time, hearing drunks yell at each other at 3 a.m., and the constant beep-beep of people at the "on-demand" pedestrian crossing (some people take the "on-demand" part a little too seriously), have made me yearn more for peace and quiet than even my favorite music.

Though I'd definitely include some of the pop singers, including Josh Groban and Sheryl Crow, I'm more interested in orchestral music by Sibelius, Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc.

I usually listen to music right before I start writing to set the mood for that scene. Right now I'm on a Jewel kick. I also have a Bonnie Tyler song for the WIP. Plus a bunch of really eclectic pieces from rock to classical. I even list the music that inspires me in the back of every book and I put it on my web site. :-)
