It came to me in a dream...

So why am I discussing dreams today? Well, I went to sleep after doing a lot of research on my next SERVANT book. (My first SERVANT book is out in October.)
The research was some pretty scary stuff. Serial killers. Ways to torture/kill/die... that sort of titillating bedtime reading.

I couldn't decide about a certain character type that wants to be in the book, whether or not he'd be "scary" enough.

Then - bam - I dreamed about him, and let me tell you, he's scary!

I've been plagued with disturbing dreams lately, and they always confuse me. But I know that a lot of bad dreams have deeper meanings than those first apparent to us.

For instance, did you know that a bad dream about losing your teeth (not one I've had yet, thank God!) usually means that you're hiding a secret, or you're afraid of losing someone?

Odd, huh? What connection is there between teeth and secrets? Well, with most secrets, we're afraid of folks finding out. And hey, teeth dropping out of your face would be something noticeable, something you couldn't hide... It's all stress-related, I think.

Even a dream that could be considered "good" can be confusing. For instance, if you dream about your throat, or your tongue - even in an unusual way, like say, in your dream your collar is too tight or you got your tongue burned on a hot drink - it often means that you have considerable imagination, and you'll have a successful future.

The worst bad dreams to me are the reoccuring ones.
For years (when I was younger and living at home still) I used to dream that I woke. I'd get out of bed, go down the hall, see my mother, talk with her - and then something dreadful would happen.
I'd wake up, realize I had been dreaming, get out of bed, go down t he hall, see my mother - and something dreadful would happen.

It'd go on and on until I didn't know for sure if I was awake or not. Very disturbing.

Repetitious dreams, especially the unpleasant kind, are an indication that we're unable to resolve a problem or a conflict in our lives.

In dreams, even the most NORMAL, loved things can become creepy. Pet lovers often have totally creeped out dreams about their doggies or kitty cats. As in a book, it's all in the presentation.

I've also dreamed that I can't dial the telephone. SO frustrating! But while in my dream I might not have been trying to call anyone important, it still signifies that I'm afraid of losing my connection to someone important, or that I'm worried about reaching someone important.
Flying. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Not in a plane, but like a bird flies. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
We've all dreamed it right? Or finding money where you didn't expect it. Or the real icky one - going to school without your shoes, or without your class schedule, or (egads) nekkid.

The bare-arsed one is indicative of vulnerability, or being caught off guard.

Flying means you're on top of current situations. Unless while you're flying, you're having a problem staying in the air. Then it means you're struggling to stay afloat and to stay on top of issues.

One of the worst dreams I've ever had has to do with water. I'm fishing, or just walking along the shore, and these gigantic fish that resemble carp but are MUCH bigger, try to drag me into the water. When I'm fishing, I could just let go of the line - but in my dream, for some reason, I don't. I get dragged into the water.

When a fish has me by the foot and is pulling me in, I keep thinking, "WHY THE HELL WAS I WALKING SO CLOSE TO THE WATER!?"
Sorry, but I have no idea what the fish-dreams mean. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

So... what's your worst dream?
Your best?

Any good or bad dreams plaguing you repeatedly lately?

I think they're all fascinating and I'd LOVE to know yours.

Who knows, maybe it'll end up in one of my books.

Fascinating topic, Lori!

I'm one of those people that, on the rare occasion that I wake up and remember dreaming, want to remember to write it down in a journal of some sort. Which I've not yet managed to do.

I don't remember my dreams very often, at best about twice a year.

When the HHP and myself were dating bi-coastally he would call me when he got off shift at the PD which was about midnight pacific time, or about 3 am eastern time.

This one time (at band camp... kidding, ha!) he told me that he called me and that I hushed him because he was gonna wake up the monkeys that were singing happy birthday to his sister-in-law.

Of course I don't remember the conversation and of course it doesn't make a lick of sense. Least of all... how can you wake up monkeys that are singing? Sheesh. Nor was it anywhere near his SIL's birthday. Gawd.

I can't remember the last bad dream that I had, probably years ago...and it probably had to do with being on the school bus with no underpants on...LOL

I'm not much of a dreamer, apparently *snort*

Great blog, Lori... can't wait to read THE AWAKENING! YaY!

Happy Friday!

I've had the teeth dream for as long as I can recall. I'd also heard that it was due to stress over a situation that is out of your control. My whole family thought I was weird, they'd never heard of it.

As, a result of the dreams I'm paraniod and a little OCD when it comes to taking care of my dental hygiene.

A number of years ago when I was in a program for spiritual directors, we had a weeklong seminar on dreams. One point that was made very clear was that the symbols in one's dream are very often unique to an individual and depend on their life experiences.

That said, one image that was pretty clear - if you are driving a vehicle in the dream, you believe you're in charge of the situation. If someone else is driving (or no one is), well it's pretty obvious you feel like things are out of your control. So I was a little confused when I dreamed of a driverless vehicle delivered some new clothes to me. LOL

I've never been a morning person! So years ago, when I was in my early twenties, I used to press snooze (most of the times!) on my alarm clock and wait until the last possible minute to get up and ready myself for work.

Lots of mornings (when I didn't bother with snooze), I used to dream that I'd get up, showered, dressed, have breakfast and leave for work. Then I'd wake up and realize I only had about 15 min. before I had to leave the house!

I have a couple of dreaming meaning books here at home. I had a strange one the other day. I was just coming into work and after I got in the door, the place seals up and there are no windows or doors until quitting time. Very strange.

Well, the one dream that I have every so often is that I'm in an elevator trying to get to a certain floor. The elevator goes to all the other floors but mine. When I decide to get off the elevator to take the stairs the doors refuse to open and the elevator starts to fall.

I've done some research on dreaming because I've used the subject a lot in my books. One of the most interesting things about dreams is that no one has ever figured out why we dream or what our dreams mean. There have been dozens of theories over the years but no way to prove any of them.

By the way, if anyone is seriously interested in the subject I can recommend The Scientific Study of Dreams by G. William Domhoff. He pretty well debunks most of the standard theories...

Then, again, maybe some mysteries are better left unsolved.

I LOVE all these different dreams! They fascinate me.

Mel, you know, your dream sounds like you have a fear of never quite reaching some goal, or like... ultimate failure. Scary. Maybe don't be so hard on yourself - if you ever are - and see if that one goes away.
I really, truly detest the repeat-dreams!

Jayne, I've awakened from many STRANGE dreams, and thought to myself, "I DON'T WANT TO KNOW."

Sometimes it better NOT to figure out the inner workings of our minds. LOL

But I also think the brain is under-used, and that it tells us things we sometimes shy away from, things that, if we paid better attention, could be very insightful into our everyday lives.

There's a book about accepting your bad dreams, and learning from them, but I forget the title.

Honestly though, most of my bad dreams are bad enough that I don't even want to discuss them, much less figure them out.

It's like... you hear something outside in the dark, but you don't want to lift the curtain to look out because - good grief - what is something is looking back in?
Yeah.
Better not to know. ;-)

I don't remember very many of my dreams, probably because I work 2 jobs and often get only 3 hours sleep.

Funnily, when I do remember my dreams, I alway seem to be dreaming about the latest book I am reading. It's actually really fun because I get to be an active participant in the story instead of just an observer.

I never replace or become any of the characters. I'm just there in the action. And at the time, it all makes perfect sense and doesn't alter or inhibit the story at all.

Sometimes I carry the plot line beyond what I have read. That's always fun to see how "off" my storyline is compared to the real one when I get back to reading it.

Crazy, but fun.

I had one dream when my kids were little and we were still living on the homestead behind the lake. I dreamed that a huge bear came up to the house and wanted to eat my kids, all snarly and roaring. I got up and shot it through the eye from the second story window [which was probably 20' off the ground, so that was one HUGE bear looking in at us]. Then I woke up and thought “That’s ridiculous, I’m not that good a shot,” and went back to sleep and recycled the whole dream, so the second time I used a rifle and shot it through the heart. Once again, I woke up and said “Ridiculous, I can’t shoot that good, either. But it’s bigger than a rat and I kill them, so maybe it was just a lucky shot,” and went back to sleep again. I never did figure out why the dogs didn’t bark at that dream bear, and I never had any more dreams about bears or anything else threatening my kids ever again.

Very strange, though. Most of my dreams - and I do have them - are more disjointed and lack a story line of any kind.

Lori,

Your topics are always very interesting.

I usually have recurring weird dreams, mostly about someone after me and I run and hide and jump off building windows, but wherever I go they are just always a few feet away from me, it's always on the same building and on the same road - a couple of times I got shot in my dream and on some other times I get to escape.

I always wake up with my heart beating really fast and the weirdest part of all is when I get those dreams I most of the time wake up at exactly 3 a.m. at that point I wake up my hubby and we pray together because I get really scared.

I asked my doctor about it, he said that my dreams might be related to my having hyperthyroidism. So far it hasn't gone away but hopefully soon since I already took my iodine radiation treatment.
I recently started to think of happy thoughts before sleeping - sometimes that works.

I've also had even creepier dreams but it's really really...uuugggh. It's 1 a.m. now so I don't really want to recall every detail of it.

By the way, would anyone know if this is at all a valid assumption, somebody told me that if you dream in black and white then that is just that - a dream but if your dream is in color then it will come true.

Thanks,
Pia

Kathy, I've done that, especially with historicals. It's like I'm there as an observer. Usually I'm laughing about something, but when I wake up, it's nowhere near funny. LOL

Karibear, you were probably worried about your kids, and so in your dreams, you were doing things you normally wouldn't be able to do - "whatever it takes" - to protect them.
I think most parents have that feeling at times that can transfer into a dream. I want to protect our children every everything, real and imagined, average and abnormal, in any means possible.
If it means shooting a 20' tall bear, so be it. LOL

Deb, I was kidding when I said that. If I thought I was a bad person I'd be working to change it.

Stella, now why am I NOT surprised that you and I share repetitive dreams, and about water no less??! It's eeries sometimes that we can have so much in common when our backgrounds are so disimilar.
:::shudder::: at the thought of the sea wall!

Pia, big hugs, honey. I hate those types of dreams. I have no idea about the color/bw aspect, but I do NOT think dreams are visions of things to come, no matter how they're presented.
My feeling is that they're an extension of things we've seen, done or worry about, and our psychic is trying to find a way to deal with them.
It could be a movie we've seen, an event we read about... anything.

I used to have repeat dreams (I have a lot of them, unfortunately) were I'd squash a thousand-legger, and it would scream so loud I had to hold my ears.
For years, until I was 8, I thought they DID scream because the dreams had been so real. Whem my mom told me they didn't, I was really confused. LOL

But then, hey, I'm often confused.

And don't anyone start thinking I'm nuts! I swear I'm sane... most of the time. ;-)

OMG the losing teeth dream. I used to dream about that all the time! I'm talking all my teeth just falling out. It started with me just taking a bite out of a sandwhich or something..then 1 at a time pop pop. I'd wake up totally scared. I figured I dreamed about it because both my parents have bad teeth..(now both wear dentures..sorry mom to let your secret out lol). Anyway...thats the only bad dream I can remember.

I also have nightmares about not being able to breathe. It felt like if I took a drug or sleeping meds and couldnt breathe and when I try to wake myself up out of the nightmare its such a struggle. I tell you I wake up with my heart beating tons! Wonder what it means. Hmm. Sorry I can't remember any good ones.

One of the funniest dreams I ever had was right before my sister got married [I was 13 at the time]. In my dream, she and her fiancé came walking up to the house leading a gorgeous palomino as a gift for me, because they felt sorry for me not being about to get married like they were. In real life, neither one would have been caught dead walking down a street, and double that for leading a horse!

What on EARTH is going on with Blogger? First it says my word verification thing is wrong multiple times - twice is normal, 4 times isn't, then it tells me my email address is wrong [it's not], then it tells me my password is wrong [it's not, either].

Shana, I've had that dream about not being able to breathe and struggling to wake up. Allen says I "thrash" when doing that. It's awful.
My kids all grind their teeth in their sleep, as do I, so during more stressful times we have to wear tooth guards. Ugh. The things we pass along to our kids!

EG, I use my "waking time" to drink coffee and go through my gazillion or so emails that accumulated through the night! LOL
Crack of eight, huh? My son (middle one) used to joke that he got up at the crack of noon. LOL

Kari, I think blogger has a breakdown twice a week! LOL
Funny on the horse gift. ;-) I watched both of my sisters get married, and it decided me on things I DIDN'T want to do in a wedding situation. Out with the big white dress, out with the "debt" to parents, out with almost everything.
We did the quiet thing at a church in plain clothes with about 6 people present.
That was more than enough for me!

Lori, when you wrote "My feeling is that they're an extension of things we've seen, done or worry about, and our psychic is trying to find a way to deal with them"--I had to laugh. I have this vision of a psychic (a person) sending us all these dreams. Could be a very strange sci-fi novel! I do have repeated bad dreams, usually involving family and being out of control (like the car crashing). One of the worst is dreaming that a stranger is in the house--very cliche for a horror movie, but it makes my heart pound. But my weirdest experience is that often when my head hits the pillow the next night, my previous night's dream flashes through my mind. Sense memory bringing it back, I'm sure.

The Scientific Study of Dreams, cool, have to look that up!
There are some interesting dreams here, great topic, Lori!
Have you guys noticed how the worst of your dreams always sound the most innocuous, and the ones that sound awful your dream-self seems to enjoy?
When I dream of people, ones I know well or strangers, they never have features to their faces, just blank, mood-indicators, I guess, although wrinkles show up somehow. Never bothers me, but strange to think about when I'm awake. Unless the dream-person looks in a mirror, the face shows up there. But in my dreams, it's perfectly normal and I never really noticed it until a few years ago!

I think the worst repeater dream I had (until I was nine or ten) was that I would wake up in the dark and time would unwind a decade, and just before I disappeared from existance I knew that this time around, when time went forward again, I wouldn't exist.
The best dream I had was a three days ago, the night after my Grandpa died, and I dreamt he woke up to see all those Dr. Seuss creatures from McElligot's Pool, they were all obviously in heaven, and the eel-thing had eight or ten little arms and hands and was drumming its fingers and when Grandpa showed up they all said things like, 'Finally!' and 'Took you long enough!' and I knew they'd been lying in wait for him, because he LOVED fishing.

But it was a wonderful dream, all the same.

I had a dream shortly after my mom died in 88. She was at our home and was walking around looking in all the rooms. I came up to her and asked what she was doing. She said that she didn't know where to go or do. I told her that she needed to go to the light, cliche' I know but there it was, she looked around and said.."Oh I see it. Actually it helped I think. To me the dream meant that I was helping her find where she needed to go and that was a first. In life she would never have listened to what I had to say. At least in the dream she actualy did and I was able to let go of any anger over her actions before she passed. That might not be what that dream actually meant but it helped me alot.

Sorry, slow on uptake, didn't get to your blog until today!

Anyways, my first job out of college, I was working for about two and a half years, and I started having dreams with my boss running after me with a knife.

I was only 25 or so at the time and it took a while to figure it out, but the significance was that the boss was a back stabbing corporate climbing don't care how he gets to the top type.

BUT it took my dream (repeated over time) for me to figure it out; he was "friendly" while he did these types of things.

Anyways, I was always amazed the mind took that way to clue me in to what was going on. It lead me to reevaluate what I was doing for a living, where I was living and all that so it lead to big changes in my life.
