On to Christmas!

WARNING: Lots of Christmas graphics in use. Sorry - I couldn't resist!

Last night, it snowed! Okay, not a lot, but it put a very pretty sprinkling of frosty white on everything. I love it. Not the cold, but the feeling that the holidays are truly here.

While my daughter-in-law was here visiting for Thanksgiving, we got the inside of the house decorated for Christmas. She's great that way - being as much into the holidays as I am. My boys... Yeah, they'll help if I ask them to, or if they see me doing it alone. But I can tell it's not something they really enjoy.
Bev and I enjoy it! A lot.

Besides, the boys were pretty busy.
My oldest son is buying a franchise restaurant, so he's swamped with paperwork and deals. My middle son is in his last year of college and spent much of his visit on the computer, doing classwork.
My youngest son chased after his 2 year old son, who has a double ear infection and went from excitedly playing with all my noisy Christmas plushes, to cranky at the drop of a hat. Poor little guy.

Thanksgiving Day was my husband's birthday, so I tried to insist that he sit still and relax. Unfortunately, our cable went out. And the cable company, which infuriates me, can't come to fix it for a WEEK.
So anyway... I decorated. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The week before, while our ever-changing Ohio weather was mild and almost springlike, I'd gotten all my outside lights up.

My shopping is done, wrapped, and under the tree!
With as crazy as it gets after Thanksgiving, I always try to get my shopping done in advance. See, I like to wrap everything fancy. Lots of bows and ribbons... and it takes time. The trick here is that I'm also writing up a storm, having just finished a new Winston novella, and now working on my next Servant novel. I have to pick days to shop when I know I won't get as much writing done.

I juggle to fit everything in! But it works for me.

Some time this week I'll do my Christmas cards, which is very time consuming. My email loop - LoriFosterBookjunkies - is doing a card exchange, and as much as I LOVE all the wonderful readers and authors on my list, I just can't take part. As it is, I send out a couple hundred cards each year.

Know what I do with the ones I receive? Well, after displaying them around the entry door for folks to admire, I save the prettiest ones and frame them for special holiday pictures during the season. Each year I trade out those from the year before with new ones. They look gorgeous in white, silver or gold embossed frames in special places around the house, replacing the more traditional decorations I use the rest of the year.

Back when my husband and I married 30 years ago, we started having Christmas Eve at our house, and we still love it. These days, we end up with anywhere from 35 to 50 people, depending on how many of the late teens bring dates, and how many babies have been born, and how many kids bring a friend. Everyone is welcome, so some of the family members have brought a lonely neighbor, a friend, an extended relative by marriage... I love it.

It's something that's very, very special to me, and I try to make enough cookies that everyone can take a plate home.

What do you have done so far?

Are you an early bird, or a rush-last-minute person?

Do you shop for lots and lots of people, or only a few?

Do you decorate your house inside and out, like me, or with only a small tree?
Or not at all?
Whatever you choose to do, however you celebrate the holidays, I hope it's a wonderful time for you - the weeks before, the time after. I wish you lots of smiles, warmth from friends and family, and peace in your heart.

Lori dear, Allow me to be the first to let you know what I think about this flashy blog:)

Love the glitter (I'm a kid inside) and the glee, do not love the panic I now feel!

Gimme a break, I've still got Thanksgiving guests here. In fact, you have given me something wonderful, an idea. I think I'll just go back to bed!

Love, Stella

LOL. Sorry Stella. My son and his wife left to spend part of Thanksgiving with her family, but I still have my oldest son, youngest son, and grandson here. It's a cheerful house!

Enjoy your guests! There's always online shopping, right!? :-)

Big hugs,

Lori

I have the heart of an early bird, but unfortunately the brain of a last minute shopper. The niece and soon to be born nephew are done, as is my mom. The siblings in their twenties provide me with as much difficulty as my father. . . nope, still no inspiration.

Happy Holidays,

Joan

I love all the pictures on the blog. I haven't finished my shopping yet. I love to do my shopping online mostly. I hate crowds during the holidays but haven't had a chance to pre-shop. The Christmas decorations are almost up. Only have a few lights and garland left to hang. Actually, the tree was up before Thanksgiving. Life has been crazy the last few Christmases so we want to sit back and enjoy as much as we can this holiday season.

Nothing better than reading a Christmas romance surrounded by Christmas decorations.

Lori,

I always smile but also exhausted when you describe events at your house. Lots of love and lots of stuff happening. ;)

Tomorrow afternoon, I am hoping to do some Christmas cards. I like Christmas cards (and I love the idea of framing some of the nicer ones!!! I plan on doing that.... I can go to the dollar store for some inexpensive frames)

I have done very little to date. I am having a limited Christmas shopping spree again this year - buying for my parents and my nieces and probably my best friend (she will have filed for divorce papers and I think she will need/deserve a pick me up). That's it. I haven't been able to shop because of my foot so I am hoping to look at a few things this year.

Last year, I gave my Dad a "thank you" letter and wrote one to his wife as well. Inexpensive but my Dad's wife said how touched they were by it (which is always nice to hear). I decorate my house inside but my brother does some lights on the roof, not a lot but enough to add that festive feel.

Christmas itself is usually a quiet affair at my house, but I like it like that. ;)

I'm going to lock myself in my room and read. Tami

I’d like to get with the spirit, but this will be my first holiday without my husband. Thanksgiving was bad enough, and I think I’ll just skip Christmas. Right now, I’m exhausted just thinking about all the things I have to sort through and re-pack. I don’t even want to think about wrapping presents, too!

Just call me The Grinch of Christmas Present.

Lori, you wonderful, cheerful, organized... (#_*@&#! person... in other words... GAH!

Are you kidding me!?!?!?! Sheesh. I'm oh-so-proud that I managed to BUY my Christmas cards. And maybe two presents.

We buy for mostly kids in our extended family and a few select friends, mutual agreement. Buying for kids is fun, adults? Not so much.

I hafta say, I liked Christmas a lot better when I was a kid! Ha!

Some decorating, definitely a tree... and it hasta be a live tree. Nothing beats the smell on Christmas morning.

Happy Friday.
Deb,
who's just now emerging from a food coma... and now in a dither about Christmas... sheesh!

Karibear,

I lost my husband 2 years ago just before Thanksgiving so I know what you are going through. Just take it one day at a time. My husband was a rabid pack rat (I'm still going through stuff). I used to take one box each day and go through it to decide what should be done with it. It seemed to help get through the holidays but still keep him close.

I too skipped Christmas that year, no tree, no cards, and only gifts for my kids. I hate that cliche that time will make it better, but it seems to be true. I can at least have a tree and do the cards and some gifts for all the kids, nieces and nephews. It's still hard, but it does get better.

You are so NOT the Grinch of Christmas Present.

Hugs to you.

I usually (pre the bookstore) would be done with shopping by nov. But not anymore.

I am just not in the mood much this year. With all the bookstore drama this year, both my parents having problems I have seem to lost my joy of the season. Hopefully it will come back.

I love the holidays! I start by going to my step dads brothers house on Christmas Eve. Ive been going for 20 years so its a tradition. Then Christmas at my moms. When I was young we would have tons of family members. Now its just mom/step dad, and myself since my brother lives in Australia. Its still fun to hang out though.
This is my 1st time decorating my place. I'm excited. The only bummer is I have to get a small christmas tree because I have to put it on my kitchen table. Why the kitchen table you ask? Because thats the only place I can put it that my 6 month old lab won't be able to pull it down or chew the ornaments. LOL I am almost done christmas shopping. I got my mom done early. (I took her to the Eagles/dixie chicks concert).

Happy holidays!

Hi Lori,

Both hubby and I love the Christmas season. This Thanksgiving was very simple, we celebrated it with our 3 dogs but not with a lot of food because we are going to Disneyland next week to celebrate our 5th year wedding anniversary (and it will be my 1st time ever in Disneyland)!
As for decorating, yesterday our wreath was already in our door. Tomorrow our Christmas tree will be up, the Nativity will also be out and displayed as for shopping, I do shop all year round, so I am almost done by now. My husband is the last person I buy gifts for.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.

Joan, the "young adults" are always a hard one. I usually take my nieces all shopping and let them pick out one entire outfit. But this year I just don't have the time, so I got them all nightshirts and footies from Victoria's Secret. I hear it's the "in" place. I found shirts on sale at Hollister for the males in that age range.
Bev, my dil, and I went shopping, and I let her pick out stuff. Easiest that way. But I also bought her some stuff from Victoria's Secret and a gift certificate to a favorite store.
I find the boys to be the most difficult. With the girls, you can always find a trendy bracelet or earrings... but guys?
Way tough!

Stephanie, that's one reason I do as much as I can early on - so I can relax more while the kids are here for Christmas break. We see a lot of movies, go to downtown Cinci and ride the horses around the square... lots of fun. I hopet his holiday is much, much better for you!

Lori M. at least your foot will be totally healed by Christmas, right!? That's gotta be a good thing.
Most in my family and my from the in-law's side shop as you do. I just like to go crazy. I like everyone who visits me, young or old, to have a gift to open. LOL. It's the kid left over in me, I guess.
During leaner times, I used to shop right after Christmas for the next Christmas, when the prices were all slashed on so many things! It was like my own surprise party when I'd dig out the bags and remember what I'd gotten everyone. LOL

Now Elizabeth and Tal, I got the tree up ON Thanksgiving, with my dil's help. Before that, all the poor presents were wrapped and sitting on the parson's bench in the downstairs family room. LOL
But you know I'm one of those people who is frazzled by a message left too long in my inbox. I like everything DONE, so it'd make me nuts to NOT do it. (Just as it makes me nuts when emails sit in my inbox for more than a day.)
I'm sure I drive my hubby and kids bonkers!

Tami! You wonderful, wonderful person, you! That's just fabulous. And soon the litter will outgrown the destruction of ornaments, so it's a small price to pay for rescuing them. I'm so glad you did.
My son and his wife bring their 3 cats with them when they visit. The two cats from the shelter are enormous, and the kitten they rescued is like a skinny teen right now. All of them are beautiful. And they love to look at my two Chihuahuas, see them get all fuzzed up, and then stroll away. LOL
I LOVE animals!

Dee! Card designing classes sounds so awesome! I'm jealous! I'll have to try that when I find some time.
I make the cards for the family. I always used a photo of my sons, but now that's been expanded to my sons, my dil, and my grandson. Getting them all to sit STILL for a few photos is the biggest challenge of all! I haven't looked yet, but I hope they all turned out okay.

Now EG, I figured you were done weeks ago! You're so organized about everything, that I'm sure you understand my drive. LOL

Deb, I miss our live trees so much that my youngest son has taken to buying me a beautiful live wreath each year. It hangs on our front door and each time I open it to greet a guest, I get that wonderful scent of pine needles. It's one of my favorite things.

Kathy H.-thank you for sharing your experiences. I've found time does help, but I've never suffered that kind of loss. My heart goes out to both of you.

Judy F., with all that going on, you still found the time to send my hubby a birthday card! Thank you oodles. And you know, when we all meet up at Dianne's, that'll kick-start your Christmas spirit. ;-) It does for me. I love seeing all my good friends for a peaceful "ladies-only" afternoon.
I hope your parents are doing much better!

Shana, you're the sister of my heart! I KNEW Sargeant would be a tree eater. LOL. I bet Tai just sits and appreciates it, right? Dogs are like little kids - each has his/her own personality.
By the way, Allen LOVED his card, and he said it truly does "tower." LOL. Yer a nut.

Yay Pia, another one like me! I knew I wasn't alone. ;-) Disneyland will be incredible! Have loads of fun.

Dee, I saw that Christmas tree, too! Hilarious! A friend of mine wraps her decorated tree in a sheet and stores it in the attic. Each year, all she has to do is get it out and unwrap it. LOL
For me, putting all the little ornaments on there is part of the fun. I have a funky tree because it's mostly decorated with ornaments my kids made in grade school, and a hodge podge of ornaments that friends and family bought me. I love it!

How many of you are listening to Christmas music now? I am! Neil Diamond's Christmas album is one of my faves, but I have a couple dozen, from country music to rock and roll, jazz and rap, whatever. It's all wonderful to me!

Happy Holidays!

Hey Lori,

The foot will be pretty much healed, which is a present in and of itself. ;)

This is still my lean time, financially speaking, especially with my school trip to Europe coming up in March and my mortgage finally being refinanced at the same time. Next Christmas, I want to plan more in advance.....

My brother likes to pretend to be bah humbug so I sneak the decorations upstairs when he isn't looking. Last night, I asked him where the decorations were (he's cleaned our basement over the last few weeks) and the look on his face was priceless. I has to assure him all I wanted was the cards I bought last year. ;)

I think I might do some CHristmas baking today!! The snow flurries outside are ispiring. ;)

Lori, my dog Tai loves Christmas. LOL She does look at the tree then she sniffs all the presents. Its amazing that her and Trapper(my mom's lab) can sniff out their own wrapped presents from under the tree. If we aren't watching they will open them. It's pretty funny to watch them open presents up. I never knew dogs could do that. Sargeant is a tree eater, and a hairbrush eater, and a wooden mixing spoon eater. LOL well, she pretty much chews anything I accidently leave out. I had to put her and Tai in time out the other day. They got into a whole box of cookies and cheese and crackers.(insert exasperated smiley here).
Oh well, they are my joy.

Hooray for the holidays!

For all of us, those who shop early and those who shop late, here are the lyrics to "Twelve Days to Christmas" from Stephen Sondheim's She Loves Me, one of the many adaptations of The Little Shop Around the Corner:

Ensemble:
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me. Ooh..

Amalia: Good morning, Mr. Novak.
Georg: Good morning, Ms. Balish. How are you today?
Amalia: Oh, I'm ready for thousands of customers.
Georg: Well, only twelve days to go!

Ensemble/Customers:

Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la la
Fa la la la

Twelve days to Christmas,
Twelve days to Christmas,
Plenty of time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who shop in time, shop in time, plenty of time
These are the people with time to spare who shop at their convenience

Twelve days to Christmas,
Twelve days to Christmas,
Look at the way they do their Christmas shopping
They can go shopping and still remain calm and sedate
These are the people we envy and the people that we hate!

Thank you, Thank you
We'll call again
We'll call again, thank you

Amalia: Quite a day, eh, Mr. Novak?
Georg: It certainly was, Ms. Balish.
Amalia: Oh thank you for the book, it was excellent.
Georg: Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Will you be taking the bus home today, Ms. Balish.
Amalia: Yes, I will.
Gerog: May I walk you to the bus stop?
Amalia: Oh, I'd like that Mr. Novak, thank you.

Ensemble/Customers:
Twelve drummers drumming,
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping,
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords a leaping
Nine

Nine days to Christmas,
Nine days to Christmas
Still enough time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who shop in time, shop in time, still enough time
Sensible people who organize the time at their disposal
Nine days to Christmas,
Nine days to Christmas,
Still enough time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who plan their days wisely and well
These are the people who shop in time, and they can go to hell!

(Simultaneously)

Cashiers: Thank you, thank you, please call again, do call again, thank you

Customers: Thank you, thank you, we'll call again, we'll call again, thank you

Georg: Are you in a very great hurry today, Ms. Balish?
Amalia: No
Georg: Well, I thought, maybe a cup of coffee on the way to the bus?
Amalia: I'd love that

Ensemble/Customers:
Eight maids a milking
Seven swans a swimming
Six geese a laying
Five golden rings

Four days to Christmas
Four days to Christmas
Just enough time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who shop in time, just in time, barely in time
These are the people who calculate with clinical precision
Four days to Christmas
Four days to Christmas
These are the folks who never waste a second
Full of a chilly efficiency
Loaded with gall
Never too early and never late
AND THEY'RE THE WORST OF ALL!

(Simultaneously)

Cashiers: Thank you, thank you, please call again, do call again, thank you

Customers: Thank you, thank you, we'll call again, we'll call again, thank you

Amalia: What a day!
Georg: Ah! Just wait until the twenty fourth.

Ensemble/Customers:
THE TWENTY FOURTH?!
One day to Christmas
One day to Christmas
Not enough time to do our Christmas shopping
We're not the shopple who peeped in time
We're not the sheeple who popped in time
We're not the people who shopped in time
Shopped in time, not enough time
We are the people who always wait until it's much too late, OH!

One day to Christmas
One day to Christmas
How will we ever do our Christmas shopping?
Why did we ever delay so long, who can recall?
Some of the family may not get a Christmas gift at all!

(Simultaneously)

Cashiers: Thank you, thank you, please call again, do call again, thank you

Customers: Thank you, thank you, we'll call again, we'll call again, thank you

Merry Christmas!

Terribly sorry - I think there ought to be a law that says "The Season" can't start until Dec. 1. I fuss and fight and scream about Christmas music in Home Depot before it's even Thanksgiving but once I flip to the last page in my calendar it sets the mood.

It's kind of crazy though since the family business is wholesale plants we've had Christmas on our mind since July when we started planting and wrapping some of our larger topiaries. By this time we're pretty much done with it, except for making notes to start earlier next year, that's probably why I wait so long to start the shopping - mid Dec usually. I have thought about it some. Maybe I'll be better and do a bit online.

We'll get the tree the first week of Dec. It has to be live - support the other growers and the smell is so wonderful, especially in So Cal when too often we have 80degree weather for Christmas. But I have one more week before I need to even consider it.

Cheers,
Zeus

Lori M., I did get lots of pages done. It's odd, because it was a grisly scene, and here I am in the holiday spirit, but totally digging into the gore! LOL Go figure!

Tal, I LOVE it! Hilarious. LOL. My sis is one who will call me on the day before Christmas Eve to ask me what my kids want for Christmas. I'm usually scrambling with something in the house - last minute baking or whatever - and I haven't a clue. Then SHE thinks I'M the one unprepared! LOL

Zeus, I adore those beautiful topiaries! Wish I could have a bunch of them. What a wonderful job. We used to always get our tree live when the kids were younger. But then my doggies had such an issue with it, that we went to fake. I miss the smell of the fresh tree, but not the clean up of pine needles everywhere!

Happy Holidays all!

I've become a "grinch" at Christmas since I was told not to spend my money on presents. However, I do like to give some to the young children. I've got a 2-year-old great-niece and 5-year-old and 6-month-old great-nephews. I found some new plush animals among my former Avon stock. So they'll definitely get something from me--and would have even without the find.

I've really had a hard time weaning myself off "giving." I think my mother and I were the main reason that our attempt at drawing names for gifts failed. We both felt we wanted to give everybody something but I just can't do it by myself any more.

And decorating for myself definitely loses its charm. It's still such a mess here that I won't be inviting anyone in the next few months yet. Besides that, it might definitely still get worse.

To those who've lost their husbands, I know how hard it was for my mother though she put up a brave front. She became very ill about 7 months after my father passed away. We children were afraid to lose her soon too. One thing she said was that nobody really needed her any more. She had been caring for nine and a half years for my father after he had a stroke at age 55. They were almost inseparable. She was both tired out and dependent on him emotionally. It wasn't until my sister told her that "we" might not really need her anymore but that her grandchildren did--three at the time, plus six more in the succeeding years--that she seemed to regain her will to live and fight the illness.

It will get better, but you'll never forget, nor should you. The dear departed deserve to be remembered with love. My sil and three siblings lost both their parents this year, Mom in Jan, Dad in July. We figured he wouldn't outlast her for long and she hung on and had operations she really didn't want only because of him. It must be heart-wrenching to lose your partner; it's bad enough losing parents. Mine are both gone now but my mother outlived my father by more than 20 years and all the grandchildren got to know her. She even saw and held her first great grandchild, though we don't know how much she was really aware of who he was.

Holidays like this always bring back bittersweet memories.

Have fun everybody with Christmas preparations.

Hello Lori,

I love the graphics very cute. As for shopping and stuff. I haven't even started xmas shopping but I do arts & craft so I may make a few things for friends & family and also get gifts beginning of december *G* Just this month has been very rough. I lost my baby nephew this month on the 19th and it has been hard with the holiday s coming up and him being so young. He was a sweetheart. No I don't decorate my house. I live in an apartment building but I do bake during the holidays *G*

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM AUTHOR ISLAND! FROM ME TOO! Sounds like you are an early bird with Christmas. Almost done with my long shopping list. I have only wrapped a few of the gifts I bought so far Have not put up decorations or done my Christmas cards yet. I just do what I can each day depending on what my one year old and 4 year old allow me time to do.

Ok...so I am terminally disorganized. I send Christmas cards out from my job so my personal list always gets pushed to the back...and usually either doesn't get sent out or goes out sometime in late January! I already got sidetracked by the chocolate post above so you can see how easily distracted I am. I am proud that I actually finished crocheting a blanket for the Soldier's Angels drive and sent it off so that is going to be my accomplishment for the year! I got sidetracked trying to read all of the posts for AuthorIsland.com so I am behind with my work today but I really do love the spirit of Christmas (giving and getting is great but that warm glow of love being shared is the best part of the season--unless you are fighting for that last parking spot at the mall). So, I hope that everyone remembers the positives of the season and wish all of you lots of love in your lives.
