Where a dancing fool intersects with Dancing With The Stars

A while back Elizabeth G wrote a post about not being a dancer. I didn't reply because 1) it was a crazy busy week for me so I was late in seeing it and 2) no one else seemed to get off on dancing either and Oh. Man. I love to dance.

I grew up in a family of dancing fools. We may not be all that adept at it, but my mom's side of the family in particular sure did like to get down. One of my earliest memories is of family picnics at Shadow Lake with my parents and Grandpa and brothers and a boatload of aunts, uncles and cousins. We'd swim and eat and play (kids) or visit (adults) all day long. Then when the sun began to go down, we'd move to the dance hall. Lots of western Washington lakes in those days hosted one. They were a bare-bones affair, just a one-story structure with a wooden floor and a juke-box. But we'd shake a little sand on the floor, shove quarters into that box and dance until we dropped.

My folks also belonged to a dance club called the Midnighters that met once a month in local community centers. I used to love it when it was their turn to be on the set-up committee, because I'd get to help hang streamers and decorate the tables. And my dad would lead me in a fox trot around the floor at least once before we left to go home so they could get ready for the evening's festivities.

When the soulmate and I were in our twenties we went out dancing every weekend and often midweek as well. It's probably one of the reasons I've got a hearing loss today, but that's another story. Still, we actually began scaling back, then stopped going entirely when the venues started playing their music so loud you had to yell just to be heard across a tiny table.

So these days I only get to dance occasionally. But I get my kicks vicariously watching Dancing With the Stars. I've never been a fan of reality TV and I don't watch the Tuesday night episodes in which a couple is eliminated. But I love watching the actual dancing. The improvement throughout the season can be amazing and it's just plain fun to tune in to view. And some of the talent is phenomenal from day one. In fact I was stunned to learn that (Cheeta Girl) Sabrina Bryan was eliminated Tuesday, which I just now discovered as I went searching for a picture. In all honesty, I'd never heard of her before this show, but her natural ability blew me away. I sure never saw her elimination coming.

Guess maybe I oughtta be voting instead of just watching, huh?

So what kind of activities do you remember fondly from childhood? Or do you have a passion that perhaps started young that lingers to this day?

And, hey? Anybody else out there watching Dancing?

I love Dancing with the Stars! You should really watch Tuesday's episodes; the professional dancers dance, plus there's always an encore dance performance. :) More dancing - what's not to love?

I have two left feet and no rhythm, but I still love to watch.

I watch it. I love to watch the dancing and like you, enjoy seeing the improvement through the series. I knew of Sabrina through the Cheetah Girls because I have a 12 year old daughter. My daughter and I were left with jaws hanging on Tuesday. Guess we need to start voting too. I saw Sabrina lasting until the finale this year. Suepicky

    Susan,

Dancing with the Stars is must-see-TV for me... the HHP doesn't enjoy it too much but, hey, we all have our flaws...LOL. I love the fact that non-dancers learn their way and, for the most part, improve. Sabrina? Well, I'd consider her career to include dancing, and I'd call her a pro...LOL. Her partner was adorable, though, I'll miss him ;-)

Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance are two television shows that I love to watch. I'd love to be able to say I can dance, but...well, I can't drive a stick shift either. I am the rhythmless nation.

I took ballet for years when I was younger and then again in college and I still love to watch it.

I've never mastered any couples dancing. There's a local place where the HHP and I go that has live music and bands every weekend. We both love to watch all the couples out there jitterbugging to a 50's & 60's band. We've taken a couple of lessons but have oh-so-far to go.

    Happy Friday!

"Dancing" is the only reality show I watch. I've never seen any of the Survivor/Amazing Race/Bachelor stuff. Not my cuppa. But I danced ballroom for many years (for fun only) and love to watch good dancers do it. It's fun to watch the non-pros improve each week and to pick who gets booted. Until Sabrina, I was on the money. What a shock. Susan, I DVR Tuesday's show and whip thru all the stuff I don't care for. I looove DVR! I wish I could wear one of those backless dresses. LOL

I adore DWTS. Even my DH has begun to appreciate ballroom dance as a result. I often mourn the fact that my generation (the boomers) lost the style of couples dancing and went to writhing separately.

And yes, I was shocked when Sabrina lost out. Marie clearly should have gone. However she has a large fan base, apparently, so they kept her on. As it gets closer to the end, I see it as a contest between Mel B and Helio. But Mel has lots of dance experience, so she's not exactly an amateur. I really think they should stick to the idea of the show, that these are people who are learning NEW skills and watch them improve. KathyK

I love DWTS! I am not exactly sure why, but I became hooked during the end of season one (probably because it started out as a summer replacement and there was nothing else to watch!).

In the minority, I was not a fan of Sabrina. Though she is obviously talented and had great chemistry (possibly on and off screen) with her dancing partner, her dances began to all look the same to me. That said, I was very surprised to see her be the one voted off the dance floor on Tuesday, I felt sure it would be Jane or Marie.

The results show is okay, if a bit hokey. Barry Manilow was a fun blast from the past and he is definitely well-preserved. (*smile*) It's to the part of the season where I like all of the remaining dancers and will continue to burn up my phone lines voting.

Great blog, Susan! I envy anyone who can dance! (I don't watch DWTS, but every now and then the DH and I will catch the ballroom dancing competition on PBS.)

Music and reading are two passions I've always had and still have to this day.

    Happy Friday!

Ooohhh... I, too, watch classic ballroom dance competitions on PBS. I think the last series of competitions was with Marilu Henner as hostess... America's Ballroom Challenge (?).

I loved it... and was thrilled to see some of the professionals with DWTS.

Deb... who never thought she'd be commenting on ballroom dancing. Huh. LOL

Susan, your description of dancing at home makes me smile. We danced. My mother played the piano, which we absolutely loved, and my sister and I cut crazy patterns wherever the carpet wasn't.

My longest dancing stint was in London where I liked to go to jazz club. Jazz of various kinds is my drug of choice. Once I danced all night until five in the morning, then went on the hunt for breakfast. I had to go to work that day!

    Yes, I really enjoy Dancing.

Okay, here's my confession, Deb: I love all dance except ballet. I was just talking about this with an acquaintance at the gym and she told me I'd probably like the "new" ballet, but for some reason classical leaves me, well, not cold, exactly but sorta lukewarm.

And isn't it fun to watch those 40s and 50s style dancers!?! My parent's generation really knew how to cover a dance floor. The soulmate and I used to call them the cruisers, because of the way they glided all around the floor. Since the generation of men who use to pilot me around a floor have all departed I don't get to dance like that--and don't know how on my own.

My husband doesn't care for DWTS either,(we DVR Heroes to watch together later while I watch Dancing in the kitchen) but I did get him to sign up for waltz classes with me. Unfortunately, he travels a lot for business and we had to cancel because we couldn't come up with a solid six/eight weeks when he'd be sure to be in town.

Margaret, I hear you on those backless dresses! Dancers backs are so long and sleek and smooth!

Jayne, Deb, EG, I, too, like watching ballroom dancing on PBS. Jayne, you might like DWTS because that is what this is: professional ballroom dancers teaming up with people who do other things for a living and competing in the classical ballroom dances: waltz, latin, swing/rock. It's a lotta fun!

And Stella, yes! Finally! Someone else who likes to dance!

    Susan,

I can't make it through the Christmas season without seeing The Nutcracker ballet at least once! LOL. I usually go with my Mom because none of my friends or the HHP enjoy the ballet either :-)

I hafta say, when the HHP and I are out and priviliged enough to watch the "best generation" jitterbugging and waltzing it brings tears to my eyes because it's just such a great thing to be able to master. My parents and in-laws are terrific dancers. My generation is dance-impaired...LOL. We...erm... disco'd our hineys off instead. Gah!

I really enjoy DWTS. I took a ballroom dance class in college and absolutely loved it. I love to see the celebrities improve as the season progresses. I also like to watch the pros when they do their dance with the singing celebrity. The dance Cheryl and Louie did with Barry Manilow was Wonderful! And wasn't the rock 'n' roll group dance great fun! Wish I could fling my body around like that.

I, like everyone else, had picked Marie or Jane to go home and was pretty surprised to see Sabrina go. I, unfortunately am a reality show junkie and I blame American Idol and Survivor, it's all their fault! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, it seems every season on Idol or So You Think You can Dance, one of the best contestants gets voted off because their "fans" assumed that they would be safe. At least, that's what the MC's always say.

My husband and I used to dance a lot when we were dating and even after we got married until his health prevented it. Now, it's just vicarious fun, but still fun.

Susan and all, I am so enjoying the comments on this blog. What a winner.

Okay, complete honesty here, I still dance, all on my own, in my office, around the house. There are times when I can't sit still and I feel funny sometimes because I realize I move to move compulsively.

I also like gospel music which I consider to be one of the roots of jazz. You have to sway and move your feet to a resounding gospel choir or singer.

    Stella:)

Tee hee--if we stick around long enough, who knows what we'll find out about each other.

And I like classic ballroom dancing, and ballet. Take a kid to the Nutcracker and experience magic all around you.

I have watched DWTS since season one. Even went and saw the road show. Now that was awesome, well worth the money. I used to take ballet as a child never did anything with it. In my 20's I went dancing all the time. Susan I swear we are related.

Stella, are you telling me everyone doesn't???? Huh. ;D

Cousin Judy. . .is that YOU?

KathyH, I think the ballroom lessons would be fun. One of my former editors, Micki Nuding used to ballroom dance with her husband and I always thought that sounded like a kick--if for no other reason than an opportunity to dress up a little, because ballroom just doesn't strike me as a dance you want to do in your jeans and I'm in a business without a lot of opportunities to dress up.

I saw the Stuttgart Ballet when I was in college. They did the taming of the shrew. I couldn't imagine how they could possibly tell that story without words. Boy was I wrong! Even thought I knew the story line, it was so clear what was happening. I have never forgotten that.

I must admit, I find myself dancing around the house from time to time. There's no one there to look at me funny or tell me how silly I look.

    Sometimes you just gotta move!

I love DWTS and I also love the old musicals where the dancing was so wonderful.

I took tap & ballet as a child but really I had 2 left feet. It was supposed to make me more graceful-right.

Did any of you take ballroom lessons in Junior High. That was the big thing in our little town. Sometimes we got to go for vanilla coke afterwards. Still had 3 left feet but I can dream of being danced with under the stars.

My husband did say he'd take ballroom lessons with me, so maybe when we retire. ;)

I also love to dance, when I was young I opted dance lessons instead of piano lessons. It was hula (hawaian and tahitian) as the years went on I also took jazz lessons.
Now I'm into belly dancing. My hubby is a good ballroom dancer (he used to teach cha-cha and some cool line dancing), so once in a while we go dancing.

The only time I've watched at all was a year ago while we stopped off at my brother's place to wait there until we could go to the airport for an early-morning flight out of Toronto to Cancun.

I did enjoy what I saw. I think one of the Dallas Cowboys was dancing. His was the only name I recognized. He did pretty well.

Maybe I'll watch it when I finally get my TV operational. Two years without. Two years in this headache of a place and there's no end in sight.

    I'm the two-left-feet type too.

Ah, dancing. When I was a kid, I wanted to learn tap dance - my mother wanted me to learn ballet, so I’d ‘learn to walk.’ We compromised: I learned to twirl a baton. I did, however, learn to waltz, my first stepfather taught me. But when I got a bit older, I wanted to learn the dances the other kids knew [seemed like they were born knowing, in fact] - jitterbug, shag, woolly-bully, and so on. My mother wanted me to learn ballroom dancing, and there was no compromise on that. When I started college, one of the PE classes I was assigned to was jazz dance, and after watching those girls who’d been doing it for years, I was so intimidated I dropped out. So - I learned to dance to rock and roll in the time of Peace and Love, and kept on keepin’ on.

Now I enjoy watching ballroom competitions on PBS, but that’s about it. Or the kind of dancing that’s done on figure skates, which isn’t exactly dancing at all, but it sure can have a lot of rhythm. I think belly dancing could be fun and good exercise, too, but I haven’t heard of any kind of dancing around here, no ballroom, no rock and roll, no line dancing, no two step, no classes of any kind, except beginning clogging for preschoolers, which I’m definitely not.

I’ve never watched DWTS, mainly because we don’t seem to get it here. Or at least I’ve never found it. All I’ve seen of it is the bit with Jerry Springer and his daughter last year on ET, and that was pretty neat. Maybe not the best dancing in the world, but still...

    Susan,
Wow! Really you're also taking belly dancing lessons? It's fun right? I have never sweated as much as I have when I'm spending an hour and a half in belly dancing class. How are you with the shimmys and can you already isolate shaking your knees and not the hips. Oh my, yeah it's difficult and fun. Our instructor has won a lot of gold medals for belly dancing - she's Russian, very disciplined and a great teacher. I am looking forward to the day when I can dance like Shakira in her Hips Don't Lie video (yeah right).
    Enjoy your class.

Pia, shimmies and the knee shakes I can do. What I find awkward in the extreme is the upper body stuff. Can do the chest lift thingie, and the chest movement side to side if I really concentrate. But I feel like a big potato when I try to put them all together. The instructor makes it look so easy and graceful. I look like Stiffs R Us. Still, it's a fun way to exercise and the hour just whips by.

Susan, it's so funny how you put it. Good luck. At first it was such a hard concept for me to shake my knees only cuz in hawaian/tahitian the hips goes with the knees. But yeah the hours just passes by fast. Enjoy! By the way, who do you think will win in Dancing with the Stars this year? Last year, it was Apollo from Tacoma, WA - I was also hoping that same year that Blake Lewis of Bothell, WA would win American Idol too.
Have you seen this? It's pretty cool.

But after reading about all you Belly Dancers out there - I'm thinking maybe I'm not to old for dance lessons again, am I?
