Welcome to Running With Quills, your online newsletter designed to keep you up to date with what your favorite authors (that would be us) are doing throughout the year. Here you will find the release dates of our new books and get information about our backlists. We'll preview our cover art here long before the books hit the stores and we'll keep you informed about works-in-progress and special projects. You'll also receive advance notice of signings and appearances. From time to time we'll give you a peek at our worlds, tell you what we're reading, and introduce you to some new authors.

ELIZABETH DISCOVERS A NEW (to her) AUTHOR

Well, actually, in the past few months I’ve had a chance to discover quite a few new-to-me authors. I just close my eyes, make a grab at my TBR shelf, sit down, and begin reading.

To be honest, I don’t finish every book I start. Some authors just don’t have “it” for me. Since I know that every reader has a different “it” factor, I won’t mention the books that don’t work for me, because I’m sure they are some other reader’s new favorite.

Besides, I’d rather talk about authors I enjoy.

Shana Abé, for instance.

I only wish I knew how to make my computer put in the proper accent over the e. But I don’t, so y’all will just have to imagine it there (unless my web goddess intervenes!).

Shana came onto my radar with THE SMOKE THIEF. I admit the cover hooked me. I figured if the book was half as evocative as the cover art, I’d be in heaven.

THE SMOKE THIEF lived up to the art and then some! I, who am not a big historical reader now, was completely hooked. This book is a timeless fantasy involving a woman born of dragonkind who lacks the ability to change into a dragon; a jewel thief born in the gutters who rises above them; a jewel that can enslave dragonkind; sacrifice; learning; suspense; and a forbidden love that simply refuses to be denied.

And did I mention that Shana is an exquisite writer? Her voice is clear and evocative, fairly humming with the completeness of her creation, unexpected and inevitable, a truly fantastic storyteller.

THE DREAM THIEF, the second in the series, was just as good.

QUEEN OF DRAGONS, the third book, is my Christmas present to myself. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Elizabeth,

I, too, am a fan of Shana Abe. As a matter of fact, the covers first grabbed my attention, too. Aside from one or two favorite "auto-buy" authors I've moved on from purchasing new historical romance.

However, The Smoke Thief and The Dream Theif were wonderful stories. The world introduced to me in those stories is one I look forward to revisiting time and again. As you said, they're really timeless. 'Course it never hurts that her guys are hot and the women riviting ;-)

Queen of Dragons is definitely on my "buy" list.

I love her fantasy books and have had the Queen of the Dragons on order from Amazon for forever. I can't wait to get it. My daughter loves her books also.

I even went back and read some of her historical fiction.

Have you read Maria Snyder-Poison Study, Magic Study? Her books are being re-published so I am waiting for the 3rd one to come out.
Happy reading.

Seconding the vote for Snyder, and also recommending Cygnet, a reprint in an omnibus volume of The Sorceress and the Cygnet and The Cygnet and the Firebird by Patricia McKillip, which I am currently rereading. Wonderful dragon-haunted cover!

Ann: They sound like great reads. You and I have a lot in common when it comes to what we look for in an author so I will certainly add these to my long list.

I'll third the recommendation for Maria V Synder...Her world is fascinating. Reread her twice already.

Shana Abe is also a favorite...her world is also a fascinating one. As you said the covers are great.

Man, don'tcha just LOVE it when you discover a new-to-you author???? And one with backlist! I recently discovered Rachel Caine of the Weather Warden series. I've put the whole series on my wish list for Christmas.

Have to check out Shana. I met her once years and years ago. As "A" authors we sat next to each other at a multi-author booksigning. Have to check out the dream series.

This just in

The Rules of Chocolate
If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly.

Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.

The problem: How to get two pounds of chocolate home from the store in a hot car. The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.

Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite, and you'll eat less.

If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the fridge. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves.

If I eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate, is that a balanced diet? Don't they actually counteract each other?

Money talks. Chocolate sings - Beautifully.

Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger. Therefore, you need to eat more chocolate.

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done.

A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy?

If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you?

If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose. An entire garment industry would be devastated. You can't let that happen, can you?

aussie dee -- if the author's voice doesn't have "it" for me, I begin correcting. That's work, not fun, so I read another book, one that will involve me completely as a reader.

I'd also recommend The Last Mermaid. That was the first Shana Abe book I read (and reviewed).

I've been eying this author's books for quite a while. On these I really find the covers intriguing. And the story lines aren't bad either.

However, I've really had to limit myself in starting to read new authors. I'm trying a different type of book right now. Maybe I'll mention it the next time someone writes about books. I've only read a few pages and haven't got into it yet.
