Life with a Writer or Reader

Yes, it's the holidays. And I have a deadline looming. And lots of family visiting. And traditions that I don't want to forego. I'm totally involved in my current book, galleys for another book land on my desk, promo decisions need to be made and... ho boy!

But you know, I think I've done a great job of juggling writing and life lately, if I do say so myself. What it takes, in my opinion, is very careful planning. You see, when I have to take time away from writing for something, I try to fit as much non-writing stuff into that day as I possibly can.

Two birds with one stone, and all that.

People who don't write might think I'm looney. But those who've lived with me for awhile now, understand. I've wondered if life with a writer is similar to that of life with a die-hard reader. What do you think?

Filling non-writing time with as much as I an accomplish means that when my son invited my husband and me along for a holiday train ride with my grandson, I also scurried to put new highlights in my hair that morning, and did the newest batch of Christmas cards going out for those that had just arrived, but weren't on my original list.

The Holiday Train ride was fabulous: a 1/2 hour ride on the train with some rather tall elves singing, and lots of sticky candy canes to go around. When we reached the "North Pole," we drank hot chocolate and the kids got really neat balloon animals or flowers, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and Rudolf, then another 1/2 hour ride on the train back. As usual, everyone loved my grandson - he tends to steal the show everywhere we go - so he got extra attention from Santa, and he got to wear the train conductor's hat, and the elves posed with him while I snapped photos. The shier kids watched in awe.

Because this was a "day away from writing," I also uploaded and printed some of the photos when I got home, mailed some off to family and friends, and did other odd and end jobs that had been waiting for me.
As a reader, when you're pulled away from an engrossing story, do you try to get as much done as you can?

Last Wednesday, my good friend Dianne had a Christmas luncheon. That's us at Dianne's. In order from left to right, Carolyn, me, Dianne, Chris, and Judy. Others were invited, but man, we got a snow storm and it held some people hostage. Of course, this was my "day away from writing," already planned, so a blizzard wouldn't have kept me home!

It was a wonderful day of good food, good friends, and Dianne's incredible hostess skills. Let me tell you, events at my house mean decorative paper plates and plasticware. Not so at Dianne's! She's the hostess with the mostest. We had real silver, china, linen holiday tablecloths, gorgeous little holiday napkin rings, lit candles... I LOVE how Dianne does a luncheon! I leave feeling feeling like a princess.

The night before the trip to Dianne's, I made veggie pizza as my contribution to the meal, baked about 8 dozen cookies, most to be frozen, and wrapped gifts for my friends who'd be at Dianne's.

Hubby thought I was nuts making so many cookies - until I explained about the "day away from writing," and then, because he understands me, he helped.

That night, after the visit with friends, I used the rest of the "day away from writing" to take a super long bath in the jacuzzi tub to read a book. Perfect!

Now my holiday baking is done, but soemthing else fun has come up - a booksigning on Saturday in West Chester, Ohio, from 1:00 to 3:00. (Details are on my website) I'm looking forward to seeing all my author friends and some longtime reader buddies, but I'll probably go shopping early that day because I realize I need a new cabinet for our DVDs, and since that'll be a "day away from writing," well, you understand the drill by now, right?

As a reader, do you sometimes have to fit in a lot around reading/finishing a book? Before I became such a voracious writer, I used to carry a book with me everywhere I went! I read at stoplights, doctor and dentist appts, everywhere! And when I couldn't take my book, I tried to get everything else done to clear the path for some serious reading. What about you?
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Has the holiday stuff forced you to give up some reading time, or are you like me, fitting it in as best you can?
Are you juggling reading with v
isits to multiple family homes, traditions that can't be skipped, work woes that are making things dicey?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For me, it truly gets nuts on occasion. Especially now that I'm halfway through the next SERVANT novel. I'm going from a gruesome mindset of mayhem and murder, to singing Christmas carols.

I'll never skip special fun time with family, but it does take creativity on occasion. I hope that, whatever you're juggling, you're still finding it fun, smiling lots, and making the most of the wonderful season!
And I hope those who live with you are understanding, as my husband, kids, and even my little doggies, are.

Big hugs, and the Happiest of Holidays to you!

I LOVE to read - the family joke is wherever I am I've got my nose in a book and another within reach. And it's true!

I'm always trying to carve out more time to read. I've been known to skip doing dishes for a day or three just to have more time to read. If you'd check my purse (which I changed from a regular purse to a canvas tote bag a few years ago) you'll find at least one book - for emergiencies, never know when I'll be stuck somewhere with nothing to do.

    Happy Holidays!

Oh it’s so nice to know that I’m not the only one who reads at stop lights!

My family makes fun of me all the time about how much I read. But their finally growing used to it and don’t harp as much. And if we go to family functions I have to make sure to leave my book in the car because my Mom gets really mad when I get to a good part and won’t socialize with the family for a little while.

I’m getting better about it interfering with the house work though. I won’t pick up my book until the house is cleaned. Or if I’m lazy that day till at least two of the rooms are done :o)

    Lori,

You're like a tsunami! How awesome to be able to multitask in your personal AND professional lives! Good for you!

I'm great at multitasking at work... at home? Not so much. I take one thing at a time and if I don't finish, well, there's always the next day. I try to live my home life as stress free as possible. Everything manages to get finished by the time it needs to be so I don't freak or stress. The kids and the HHP do more than their share so I'm a lucky girl.

Love and charity are my goals for all year, which includes the holiday season so, hey, if I'm bitchy one day and cheery the next... well I'm loved and love and give what I can of my time and my money and get more than I deserve every day.

    Can't beat that with a stick, y'see. :-)

    Have a great weekend, allayaz!

...sheesh. By the way, I read during every free moment and Sunday mornings from 7am to around 9:30 is my reading niche. Everyone else is sleeping or out of the house and, currently, I make coffee, start a fire and read for a blissful 2 1/2 hours.

    Hey Lori!
I'm still pouting because I couldn't make it on Wednesday :(

The holidays take a big chunk out of my available reading time, but it's worth it to spend time with family and friends.

Have fun at the signing on Saturday - sorry to say I'll have to miss it too. I'll be in the kitchen baking and making candy (we want Allen to have his fudge, don't we??) - some people find making holiday treats stressful, but I find it calming, especially after being out in the midst of the hustle and bustle in the stores. There's nothing like being in the kitchen that'swarm from the oven, the smells, and even the sounds that go along with baking - the mixer, cracking eggs, the jingle of the measuring spoons . . . Ahh, it's heavenly!

    Have a great weekend!

Your train sounds like the Santa train we have out here. I just went on it a couple weeks ago and it's much fun.

I think the 'day away from writing' is a good idea! I would heavily need to enforce the addendum: and not internet! LOL.

In fact maybe I'll try that this weekend!

Aloha from Author Island!! I am so glad that I found this blog!! It is great to know that I am not the only one running around with books (although I haven't managed the "reading at red lights" yet). I hate when things get in the way of my reading time - but I try to get everything done before my kids go to bed so that when they are in bed - it is my serious time to read uninterupted. I hope to make it to your signing - fellow Cincinnatian here!!!

    Hey Lori,
I really enjoyed the luncheon. Isn't Dianne great. Her house reminds me how houses use to look at Christmastime in my childhood.

I use my love of books as my time.
I always have a book or two in my big bag. Also I keep a couple of books on my mp3 (my car is so old I don't have a working radio in it.)

And everyone knows if I down to the last 50 pages of a book, do not
bother me. Do not expect dinner, laundry and my answering you till I am done.

    Merry Christmas

I can’t remember not being able to read, I think I was about 3 when my gran got tired of reading the funnies to me and taught me how to read them for myself. My time was curtailed when I was a child, but the older I got the more time I took. Bus rides were great for reading - I got through the whole Oedipus Cycle on a bus ride across the state.

When I became an ‘adult’ I could read what I wanted, when I wanted, which generally meant staying up all night, since there were other responsibilities that had to be met, also. Then when my babies came along, I read like crazy whenever they were asleep, and when they were cranky I rocked them and sang whatever I was reading to them. They didn’t care that it was usually a Georgette Heyer, they just wanted to hear me and be rocked to sleep.

I never had less than a dozen books in progress, and I didn’t concentrate on any single one until I got close to the end. It was more difficult when I worked two jobs, but I told myself it was all multi-tasking and good practice! Then when I went back to a single job, I had books handy by all the TVs so I could read during the commercials, in the kitchen so I could read while stirring things, but never ever in the car. I KNEW I’d either get into or cause an accident, so that was my little ounce of prevention.

Now that I have to listen to audios, I can do all kinds of things at the same time, usually crochet afghans. It’s the one and only benefit, but I’ve run out of people I can give afghans to!

Like everyone here, I'm an avid reader. I get kinda shaky when I'm nearing the end of a book and don't have a back up. But I'm a serial reader--I can't read a lot of different books at the same time. I want to follow the progress of one book to its satisfying conclusion, not read a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

    Different strokes, my friends.

    Hey Lori,

Have I mentioned how excited I am for the next Servant novel??? :)

I am trying to fit reading in everywhere but between the holidays and getting ready for the holidays (i.e. all of the marking I have to do, visiting, cleaning, cooking), I find that I don't have nearly enough time to read as much as I would like.

However, I always have books on hand (in a book bag, in a purse, on a table nearby). I usually have a couple of books on the go and am trying to keep a log of what books I am reading, to try and model my reading for my students. I am trying to do a lot...

Oh, and I baked sugar cookies tonight and gingerbread cake too!!! Tomorrow night is my staff party and I have a bunch of other get togethers as well. Tonight, I am relaxing!

I tend to always have some kind of book in my purse or car or what have ya. I'm not really into the holiday season this year though so spending more time reading than celebrating... thank goodness! Books, books, books. Thank goodness for books. Last night I strolled around here trying to figure out where I could build more shelves. They are already in every room--including the bathrooms--so it's a challenge.

Yesterday I took my granddaughters for some "granny time." My daughter and I traded girls halfway through so we both had a chance to spend one-on-one time with each one.

What fun we had, topped off by the family getting together to see Serena in her Christmas pageant last night. All those children, from teeny to still pretty teeny, singing in the sanctuary, their eyes shining, put me in the perfect Christmas spirit.

    Aloha from Author Island!! Lori,

Nice to see that you are having fun in your life. Thanks to grandma, I have been a voracious reader since childhood. I really used to carry a book with me everywhere I went and the result was thick glasses at a very early age.

Now many years and contact lenses after, my reading is still the same even though I have a hectic married life and 2 little ones. I think I must have passed on my reading genes to them as I used to read even when I was pregnant and went for doctor appointments. Women around me used to give me funny stares as I firmly kept on reading my romance book balanced on my big belly.

Sometimes, I have to fit in a lot around my reading like cooking, cleaning, kids and life in general but the book is right there with me all the time. It is like reading is the central point of it all and the rest is just built around it. LOL

Sharing books with my kids on special occasions and holidays is the best gift I can give them and I do try to do that as often as I can.

    Happy Holidays!

Boy, you sure do lead a busy life, Lori.

I can imagine that the little kids like your grandson steal the show at any time but especially at Christmas. They're the only ones getting gifts from me this year.

Reading, oh yes. I've always got a couple of books on the go. Sometimes I work around the reading but most times I read and do the work around that. And I've always got a book with me too wherever I go and think I might have an extra minute.

I've been to two Christmasy events this past week: a banquet on Thurs. and a comedy show called "Laughing All the Way" with desserts yesterday. Both were very enjoyable. There are a few more coming up and for Christmas Day itself we're invited to my brother's place closer to Toronto. I hope the weather won't be too bad. My poor sister will be working most of the holidays; she's a nurse. But then, she says, she's been off at other times so it's her turn to let some other staff have time off.

You guys in the Seattle area have ice? I just know that my aunt in Portland, OR got a lot of rain last weekend and that there was some flooding there too. Was the ice part of that weather system?

We have ice on the sidewalks too but the roads are mostly clear. I guess winter's here to stay around our parts.

Hi Lori. I linked over here from Author Island because I'm not much of a blogger but am trying to do a little more lately.

I've had times of feast and times of famine for reading. When I was young I'd read a book a day. During the childrearing years I rarely read more than short stories. Now there's still work and grandkids but I'm able to read a lot more again.

Like you, it's being organized and that's definitely a skill that isn't easy to learn--or teach those around us to respect. Glad you've got that handled. The train trip for grandson and Santa sounds well worth the time away from writing!!

Here in northern TN we are having rain with temps in the 60s and 70s. My mother in southern WI has snow and ice alternating. Ah, winter!!

Happy Holidays and the best of the New Year to you and all of your friends and family.

    Aloha from AuthorIsland!

I just finished "A Very Merry Christmas." Yes, my TBR pile is taller than I am. I've been a fan for several years and my favorites are your stand-alones but I enjoyed "Do You Hear What I Hear." I thought this particular anthology was good in it's entirety --I'm not generally a fan of anthologies but obviously I make exceptions;)

I retired over a year ago and I can tell you it's very dangerous for an addicted reader. Not that I don't love it but I think maybe too much sometimes. Just imagine...every moment of every day is all mine. To do exactly what I want. Gives me shivers just thinking about it. Of course, I earned every bloody minute of it too!

My habit is at least a book a day and it's the one indulgence I allow myself. At this stage in life I have no need of "things" other than the books that allow me to live in my fantasy world. House work or cooking doesn't even come close nor do many people for that matter. I love living in a fantasy world and TYJ for the authors that can make it happen for me. I don't go anywhere without a book (well...maybe on my way to B&N, which is three shopping minutes away:)

It's a little scary that there are so many of us addicted to reading but sorta comforting at the same time. How can we not like it that others also wallow in the same madness.

My birthday is February 1 and I'm looking forward to making "Hard To Handle" a gift to me:)) I'm out of the holiday craziness faze but wish you the best in yours....Nancy

Hi Lori, Aloha from Authorisland! I'm one of "those people". The ones who have their nose in a book all of the time. I always carry a big purse. Not so I can fill it with the usual purse stuff, but so that I have room for at least one book. One of my worst fears? Being stuck in a waiting room with nothing to read!

"Aloha from AuthorIsland" Lori. You sound like a busy woman and one who has done some Christmasy things already. Glad you had a day off to do the enjoyable things.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

    Aloha from Author Island!
I also carry a book with me everywhere I go. I have not given up reading for the holidays. Anything that doesn't get done---oh well!

Its funny my mom and friends laugh at me all the time. I can't go anywhere with out a book. I read ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE. You never know when you just might need that book.

I mostly read in the car, I seem to spend alot of time in the car. I car pool in the morning, and in the afternoon. When I go out shopping with mom I have a book. ANd I use it if I don't want to talk to someone I pull out my book and I start reading. (I know thats mean, but my brother just babbles)

I truly don't know what I would do with out books. They are my babys LOL.

Wishing you and your family all the best during the Holiday Season!

Hopefully I'll have time to read all the great books I get, after the holidays.

    Aloha from AuthorIsland!!

I definitely don't get to read as much as I'd like during the holidays. There's just too much to do and now the kids are out for Christmas break and that cuts into my reading time too.
