A Time for Giving...

Photobucket

Being that I'm very much in the holiday spirit, and that means I'm in a giving mood, while feeling incredibly blessed, I've been thinking a lot about my truly special friends - and the amazing things they do.
That brings me to Laurie Damron.
Laurie inspires me to be a better person, just by being such a wonderful person herself. You see, Laurie is the volunteer troop coordinator extraordinaire for the "Lori Foster Bookjunky Troop Effort." At this time of year, more so than any other, I think of our troops, where they are, and the special times that they're missing right now, and I want to burst with gratitude for what they do, and why they do it.

Our on-going Troop Project adds up to a LOT of work for Laurie. I, and other authors, donate $s, books, etc... that Laurie uses to raise more money for the troops.
Then she shops. And shops and shops and shops.
And she packs. And packs and packs.
And she ships. Oodles and oodles of great stuff.
I do the easy part - I hand stuff over to Laurie. Without her, our project wouldn't be nearly so successful. Laurie IS the project - and I love her for it.

Do you have any truly special friends?
Do you know someone who deserves a big pat on the back, or a hug of gratitude for giving unselfishly to others?
Do you, like me, get very emotional at the holidays, just thinking of all your blessings, and wishing everyone could have them, too?
I do, and because I'm feeling thankful for so many incredible good friends, I figured I should introduce one of the best to the rest of you.

Please welcome a truly phenemonal person: Laurie Damron.

Have you ever been away from home and all alone for a holiday or a special event? Maybe you’re not truly alone, just not with your friends or loved ones. Our deployed servicemen and woman are in that very situation for months at a time - just one of the reasons I enjoy working with Lori Foster to bring a little joy to some of the men and women serving our wonderful country.

I know that I’ve never experienced loneliness and fear to the degree that they have, let alone the absolute terror of some, not only being away from home, but in constant danger, maybe seeing friends and comrades wounded or even killed right next to you. I think of my family, safe and sound here at home, and how we owe our every freedom and privilege to the military men and women who have served our country for several decades.

These men and women “belong” to someone – they are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and they are away from their friends and loved ones for long stretches of time that include some of the most important holidays to us as Americans. Just think of all that they miss - births and deaths, first steps, school programs and sporting events, birthdays, anniversaries and graduations. They can’t jump in the car to visit someone, or make a late-night run for a candy bar or their favorite fast food, or make a scraped knee feel better with a kiss and a Disney character bandage – all of the little things we take for granted.

They need to know that someone at home, even a total stranger, loves and cares for them and wants them to feel appreciated.
They deserve surprises from home, goodies and snacks to sweeten their day, lotions to soothe desert and sun-ravaged skin, or a pretty candle to soften harsh surroundings.

We have been working together to send boxes to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for almost four years now, and while I don’t have an exact number, we have shipped out approximately 800 pounds. Almost half a ton! Now that is a whole heck of a lot of happiness! The cards, letters and emails I’ve received in return have made me smile, laugh and in many instances, cry.

What can you do to help? Lori Foster started talking with a handful of us early last spring about a cookbook. The plan was for a small booklet, the kind that is folded and stapled, with recipe contributions from authors and readers. This cookbook, when all was said and done, ended up being professionally (and beautifully) published by Samhain Publishing titled THE WRITE INGREDIENTS, and it is positively gorgeous! The ongoing troop project benefits from the proceeds of each and every cookbook sold. This cookbook makes an excellent gift for friends and is perfect for stocking stuffers, or hostess gifts for your holiday parties! There’s still time to get yours!
Please visit any of the following to get a copy:
http://www.samhainpublishing.com/
http://www.amazon.com/
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/
Get a copy for your friends too!! And be sure to tell them who benefits from your purchase – you should be proud to be helping such a worthwhile cause.

Do you know anyone in the service?
Let's honor him or her on her. Please share - and Happy Holidays to you.

Thanks for your support!

Laurie, what a beautiful post! Yes, we most definitely need to remember the troops--and everyone else putting themselves on the line in the name of duty and freedome and responsibility. Thank you for doing all you do.

As for the cookbook, I love it! I've gone to it again and again and bought more of them recently to give as gifts. The recipes are phenomenal.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Laurie, welcome, and kudos to you and all who contribute to the troops. I don't know anyone in Iraq at the moment, but my nephew is a Marine, my husband is a Vietnam vet and we were only married thirty-something days when he was shipped off to become a Viet Nam soldier. That war taught me you can hate the war, but love the soldier and to support him/her in every way you can. So, yay, you guys for going that extra mile.

Laurie tirelessly supports the troops all year long, and she is definitely an inspiration. I consider her a good friend. She's inspired me to support the troops more than I ever did, and I love how the project has grown. Even at work there was a huge collection for troop care packages. People are really trying to make a difference, and that always chokes me up.

Lori, you inspired me this year with how you wish to share your blessings with those in need. Your dedication to St. Judes inspired me to do something similar at my blog for a hospital near where I live - Childrens Memorial Hospital. There's nothing worse that a sick child. Thank you for always being so generous, and for inspiring others.

Happy holidays everyone :)

Thanks Lori, for inviting me! You've been my inspiration with the ongoing troop projects! Don't let Lori fool you, I couldn't do any of it without her or any of the other authors and readers who give from the heart - some donate time and time again, always eager to show the love!

For anyone who doesn't have a copy of THE WRITE INGREDIENTS, you should put it on your wish list - and quick - Santa's about to take flight!

May God bless you all this holiday season!

Hugs and more hugs,
Laurie

This is a very emotional subject for me since my older brother, who I adore, is a Vietnam vet and a former Marine, who paid a high price in that war with never a word, ever, of complaint. Little wonder he is one of my heroes.

May I simply say: Peace. And blessings to one and all during this holiday season.

A great blog and a very worthy project. Kudos to both of you for trying, and obviously making a difference in the lives of the troops overseas.

I spent 10 years away from any sort of family at Christmas during the 1960s and 1970s. However, it was more by my choice than most of the troops are given the option to be. I spent a year in France with a family of 7 children. I enjoyed learning about Christmas a la francaise. Most of the other years I spent teaching in Germany. I didn't mind so much any more not being home at Christmas since I was already well able to be own my own. However, the Christmas "spirit" did suffer and it became just another day unless I was invited to a colleague's or friend's home and that happened most years.

But the only time I became even the least afraid during those years was during the Cuban missile crisis under JFK--and that wasn't at Christmas.

I can do little myself at the moment to help others from this distance. Anyone who, like me, is unable to give money this Christmas or at any time can still have a little bit of satisfaction in making even a small difference by clicking at the sites at http://www.thehungersite.com every day of the year. I've never yet received any e-mails from these people in the 10 years I've been donating there. All are worthy causes and I've made the site the home page of my Firefox browser.

Hey all!
I'm just checking in after a busy day yesterday of... mostly playing. LOL. We're down for the count for Holiday explosions! I can't wait. I LOVE getting everyone together at my house.

Anyhoo - I just wanted to say thanks to everyone stopping by, all the authors who contribute the project and gave recipes for the book, and all the readers who share the information with other people, and especially to everyone who's bought one of the books.

Most of all, I want to send my heartfelt thanks to anyone in the military, or anyone who has a family member in the military. You're all heroes.

Giant, tight, squeezing hugs to one and all! :-)

This is a great idea and you and everyone involved in this project are to be commended. It's so hard for the soldiers over there, even though they have their basic on-post store they to shop at, there's still a great deal that's not available to them. My brother just got back two months ago from an eighteen month tour in Afghanistan. While he was over they he emailed us quite a bit about the conditions and the items they could get and the items they needed shipped to them from family or friends who would like to help. Thus, there were a great many of us who were always shipping care packages over there for him and some of the other soldiers. He also asked that we ship items for the Afghan children and families who worked at the bazaar where he was stationed just outside Kabul. It was very interesting to read about the Afghan people and help them at the same time we were helping the soldiers on the post. Keep up the good work. I know they definitely appreciate it. I'm certain my brother will appreciate it even more early in the year of 2009 because his unit has already been scheduled to re-deploy to Iraq. Ugh! Thanks again for making this happen.

On a side note...Aloha from AuthorIsland
