    Jayne Announces SIZZLE AND BURN

I'm thrilled to tell you that SIZZLE AND BURN, the latest book in my ARCANE SOCIETY series, will arrive in stores on January 29. In it you'll meet Raine Tallentyre, a psychic sensitive whose most recent romantic relationship came to a screeching halt when she made the mistake of revealing her paranormal abilities. Aunt Vella, a gifted but troubled soul, had warned her years ago to keep her talents a secret. And now that poor Aunt Vella—her last blood relative—has died, Raine has resigned herself to a lonely life.

But when she travels to Shelbyville, Washington, to clear out Aunt Vella's house, Raine's highly developed sensitivity leads her to a horrifying discovery: a young woman bound and terrified in a basement storage locker. The victim has survived, but the culprit is still on the loose. Without warning, a new man enters Raine's life—investigator Zack Jones. One thing's for sure, he's not afraid of her abilities.

There's a huge complication, however: Zack Jones is working for the Arcane Society. This secret organization, dedicated to the study of paranormal phenomena, shattered Raine's family with an act of betrayal long ago, and she's not about to trust them now. But as a killer makes her his target, and a cabal of psychic criminals known as Nightshade operates in the shadows surrounding them, Raine and Zack must rely not only on their powerful abilities but on each other . . .

Here's a little taste of the story:
    * * *
His eyes were a shade of blue that made her think of glaciers and gunmetal. He wore a black leather jacket, black crew-neck pullover, dark pants and low boots. She knew immediately that this Jones was every bit as dangerous as the one who had terrified her on that long ago night...The invisible energy he generated stirred the hair on the nape of her neck...

"How do you know so much about me?" she asked.

“The agency I represent is very good at gathering information in a hurry," he said. "But I didn’t have to read your file to guess how you would feel about being paraded around in front of the media as a police department psychic.”

“No?” Her chin came up a little. “Why is that?”

“Because I would feel the same way.”

    “Is that so?”

“Given what you’ve been doing for the Oriana police for the past eighteen months I’m assuming you’ve got your aunt’s talent or something close to it. You hear voices in your head, right?”

    She went very still.

“Relax,” he said. “I know where you’re coming from. I see visions.”
    * * *
One more thing: I'll be doing two signings for SIZZLE AND BURN, Seattle and Honolulu (hey, touring is tough, really). If you can't attend either event remember that you can order a signed copy by contacting the Seattle Mystery Bookshop several days BEFORE the date of the signing (that would be like right about now). On the day of the event I'll inscribe the book exactly as you wish and the staff will send it to you in the mail. Signed books make great gifts!

Wow! Sounds AWESOME! I can't wait. I'm definitely grabbing this one.

I haven't read the ones before it, so I should backtrack? Or will it matter?

I've just finally got a little reading time - and two manuscripts to read for quote, but I'm not comfortable reading those in the tub. ;-)

    Thanks Jayne! Sounds totally delish!

I am awaiting my copy from Amazon. Of course if you decided to make a trip down to Portland, I'd have to see you then. We don't quite have the weather of Hawaii. Bundle up and keep warm the next few days.

I figure if B&N is silly enough to ship it early, I'm shallow enough to dive in and enjoy. And I did. Both. Yes, I'm shallow, and yes, I enjoyed it immensely. Now I will give it a couple of months, and go back and re-read it. I love re-reading your books.

I just wish you could write faster.

Anonymous and K.I.: Wow! Shipping early at B&N, huh? Well, I'm glad you liked the book. Thanks for the positive feedback.

Diane P: Next time I get to Portland I'll look for you!

Lori: No problem reading SIZZLE AND BURN as a stand-alone.

Cookeemama: Thanks for ordering the book from amazon. Hope you enjoy it. I'm having a lot of fun with the Arcane world.

    dfender: Thanks for the enthusiasm!

booklady: Well, it will be a short tour (two cities!) but you're right about Seattle Mystery Bookshop. They do a great job with signings. And if you can't attend, remember, you can always pre-order a signed copy by contacting the store (206) 587-5737. They'll be happy to reserve a copy for you which I will sign when I do the event. Afterward, they'll ship the book to you.

    Jayne,

I finally got around to listening to Second Sight. It was great, just like all of your novels are. They translate into audio so well. You write such fluid dialogue and transitions that your stories are just as wonderful to listen to as they are to read! I am looking forward to the next Arcane novel in the set!

Keep writing and please, please, please consider writing another medieval tale because you are so good at them. Mystique is still one of my faves!

Send some of the nice weather to Wisconsin and the rest of the midwest when you're in Hawaii, please? We are getting pelted with lots of snow and very cold temperatures (almost zero the last couple of days)!

Looking forward to reading/listening your next book!

I'm still hurting because the release date was moved back so it wasn't out in time for my birthday two days ago. (I got a nice mole figurine and a vampire dust bunny bookmark instead.) Now I'll have to buy it myself, dammit!

I can hardly wait until I have this next Arcane Society book in my grubby little hands. Though I can't afford to get it from Amazon, I did order it from our library and was lucky enought to get on the list in the ones' numbers. So I should get it about a week or two after they get it in. Of course, that isn't always immediately either.

Yep, I can take your type of psychic twist very well, just not the other kind at all. Have you already written the next one in the series? LOL I know, I'm greedy.

I'm looking forward to Sizzle and Burn very much. I've been reading and re-reading your work for at least 25 years. You're a wonderful writer! Now that I've gushed to an embarrassing degree, are you working on an Amanda Quick now or taking a break following your mini-tour? And speaking of tours, any chance you'll be in Kentucky some day?

Just noticed your comment. Yep, I'm hard at work on the next Amanda Quick!

    Thanks for asking.

    Jayne,
OK, so, over the years I've read some of your books off and on, and found them kind of "hit and miss"- more "Hit" than "miss", but still...Then this last year, something "clicked" and I suddenly "got it". I've been reading everything of yours that I can get my hands on since. Of course, being from the Great Northwest, is a real plus, nevertheless, usually I am scared off by paranormal and/or futuristic stuff (religious convictions,OK?) but dang it, now I'm hooked.
"Sizzle and Burn " has been taunting me on amazon for months , but when I finally admitted that I "had to have it" I decided that I could not wait for shipping, so I hit my local Barns and Nobel the Day it came out (too bad I didn't know B&N was sending pre-orders out early, lol ).
Anyway- I enjoyed it greatly (the charicters, and their interactions really appeal to me) and am now impatiently waiting for the next one.
I'll have to pay attention to when/if you next make it down to Portland- or come up with an excuse to go to Seattle next time around. Actually, Elizebeth Lowell is also a great favorite of mine. Ever make joint appeareances?
    Thanks- Jill

Loved Sizzle and Burn, as well as the other two in the Arcane Society Series. Such fun. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I must admit it was about three in the morning when I finally finished, but it was well worth it. You had me hooked from the very beginning, and I certainly did not suspect who the serial killer was, nor some of the other suspects though I did have a little tug of intuition on one character. Keep them coming. I love all your books, but these are extra special.
