Jayne Reads: SIMON SAYS

Happy New Year!

New Year, new focus here at RWQ. You might want to read the new introduction at the top to get the details but, what it comes down to is that, in addition to some regular blogging, we're going to use this forum as a sort of online "newsletter" that is designed to keep you informed about signings, new releases, events, backlist, cover art, and works-in-progress. We'll also introduce you to other authors, tell you what we're reading and generally let you know what's going on with us.

Speaking of what I'm reading, this is the next in my mini-series about books written by my sister Quills. As I've explained elsewhere, I'm not doing reviews here. Rather, I'm using the series to tell you why I think each of the Quills has been so successful in her own way; why the books work.

SIMON SAYS by Lori Foster:

The Story: Set in the rough, tough, competitive world of MMA -- mixed martial arts fighters-- this is sexy romantic suspense featuring a gutsy heroine who is blackmailed by a creepy step-father and forced to track down the hero, an extreme fighter. Secrets abound.

Why I Read the Book: Lori is renowned for her edgy heroines and alpha males. I'm a sucker for both.

What I Got from the Book: An edgy heroine and an alpha male. Also, lots of neat stuff about a macho, testosterone-fueled world I would otherwise know nothing about: Mixed Martial Arts.

One of the Author's Unique Talents: World Building. No, this is not a phrase that is generally associated with contemporary romance. It is used most often to describe Urban Fantasy and Science Fiction. But, trust me, in crafting her series based on extreme fighters Lori has created a complete and fascinating world that is, to my knowledge, utterly unique in romance. She proves that you don't have to do vampires and werewolves to deliver sexy alphas.

What the Author Had to Say About Her Own Book: "As a people watcher, I often imagine unique characters in a different “who, what, when, where” setting. That’s what happened to me with the UFC and Pride fighters – basically, MMA, or mixed martial arts, athletes. They are the most honed, ripped, fast, strong, all-around talented athletes (just ask me, I’ll tell ya) so naturally, my fertile mind wondered how that much machismo dealt with every day life, and more specifically, romance. From interviews I’ve seen, these highly capable guys are also... nice! And family oriented. And polite. To make it to the top level of any career, you need smarts, and dedication, and control. They’ve got it all!

If you can’t already tell, the athletes fascinate me. My books aren’t so much about them fighting, as it is about a fighter with all that capability dealing with the pitfalls of falling in love. I’m having a blast with this series. After Hard to Handle, out in Feb, I have at least two more books planned for the series, but maybe more. We’ll see!

Last Word: Hot.

Until next time,
Jayne

Wow how great this is. My two all time favorite writers talking about a book that absolutely loved. Simon says was wonderful. Lori you are truly an amazing writer. Jayne I loved your books for years. Still my favor is smoken mirror and the Eclipse series. Both of you are awesome!!! I can't wait for you next books. I look forward to reading. Thanks you guys for your talents of great writing.

marie c: looks like we're on the same page with Lori's books!

By the way, you mentioned that you enjoyed my Eclipse Bay series so you might like to know that I just turned in a manuscript that has the heroine visiting Eclipse Bay for a short period of time. During the visit we'll find out how Arizona Snow is doing and learn a few secrets about her mysterious past...

The book won't be published until next year, though.

Jayne,

I agree, Lori is a master word builder. I just finished Simon Says a few weeks ago and, as usual, Lori delivered an alpha hero that I will remember for a long, long time.

That's another thing I love about Lori. She always makes each character memorable. Anytime someone asks me what romance author they should read, Lori's name is the first off my lips.

I loved hearing about Simon Says, and can't wait to read it!
Lori's heroes are the best--so heroic and cool, and there's no better way to learn about something new (like MMA--that's new to me) than when it's wrapped in a great story.
Both Jayne and Lori have so many great qualities in common--those sexy heroes, edgy heroines, and fantastic world-building.

thanks!

I think the thing that makes Lori's "fighting" heroes so special is that they're larger than life, but yet they're not. Makes no sense, I'm sure, but they don't have big heads, simply accepting that they can take care of things - and then taking care of them. Despite their toughness and their talents in the ring, they never expect anyone to treat them any differently, and they're always humble. Ok, so maybe they're just a *little* bit cocky, but that's ok, they've earned it!

This is a sport that I wouldn't know anything about if not for Lori, and I've enjoyed the introduction!

I love the idea that because of the way each writer "sees" the world we are, in essence, world building when we tell our stories. (And we reveal a great deal about ourselves, besides.)

Facinating glimpse into Lori and her world, Jayne!

Happy 2008 all!

What's with my mouse? I can't get it to function properly.

But here I finally am and guess what?

I'm just reading "Simon Says" and am exactly half way through on p. 165. I truly love the characters: vulnerable but tough Dakota and Simon, sublime, tough and tender. Dakota has just bared her heart a little. I won't give away any other spoilers. This one's always a given.

I agree with all Jayne's said and I love it when authors take me to professions, countries and ideas I know nothing about or have never considered.

What EG said is something I was also thinking: that really every author does world-building. However, some worlds are just so different from what we are used to that we notice them more, like Jayne's Harmony world or the MMA or the world of the ancient pharaohs.

I love the new ideas of what you'll be blogging about. I think I commented somewhere that I thought the "Books" page would be more to alert us to upcoming books. This is important for me especially for those of you whose books appear in hardcover first. I can't afford those, and have to wait for the paperbacks. Therefore, I like to be one of the first to read them from the library. I hate having to wait 5 or 6 months to get one of the 15 or so copies that our library usually orders for its branches. Luckily, I got in my bid for the next Arcane Society book fairly early and should be amongst the first batch to get it.

I also read something about "Eclipse Bay" elsewhere. Was it in the library news or on Writerspace? I thought maybe a new reprint was coming out. I still have to read the 3rd installment. Unfortunately, my copy is somewhere in a big box in a big pile of boxes. I'll have to borrow that from the library too in order to be ready for the update next year.

So please ladies, let us know well ahead of time so we can budget for or reserve your books. Thanks for the super ideas, though I hope you'll still write us a newsletter when the appearance of the book is imminent.

Thank you for writing about SIMON SAYS and Lori, Jayne.

Lori: Your comments about seeing a character in three dimensions hits home for me. You never present stereotypical people and I'm left feeling I know the folks you write about.

Ranurgis - if your mouse is the old style with the ball inside, it needs a clean, if it is cordless, check the batteries, infrared - could be loose connection, there's my hopefully helpfulsuggestions :)

I think it's all been said, but I just want to emphasize that Lori's appeal is from writing stories we can relate to. Some of her heroes and heroines have been down on their luck, have had horrible things happen to them, have had children, or been married before. She brings the "human experience" to her stories, something that resonates with readers.

She writes about good, honest people who fall in love, and she makes it believable and romantic and completely wonderful. She's a keeper.

Lori here, trying to hold up her enormous head. LOL. Seriously, folks, I'm mega flattered by all the kind comments!
Now I have to stop patting myself on the back and basking in the generous praise so I can finish up my current book. ALMOST done. Whew.

HUGS to all!

I like the Winstons best myself, but the fighters are right up there with them. I’m not sure if I’d categorize them as ‘world building’ but they certainly illustrate a segment of society that I’d never see otherwise. And I like the heroes and heroines, they all seem like people I’d know. Or like to know.

Great blog - and I am interested in reading the new posts!

Jayne, great description of what makes Lori's books so great. She has created a niche that I don't read anywhere else - and I love how you feel as if you know (and care about) ALL of the characters she creates.

I have Hard to Handle on pre-order and am super excited for it to come in February, when I will have time to enjoy!!!
