Jayne Goes Positive

Don't get me wrong, I love writing romantic-suspense. I think I was born to write it. It is the only kind of story that comes naturally to me. And I really love my Arcane Society series. SIZZLE AND BURN, Book 3, is out now. This week, the paperback edition of Book 2, WHITE LIES, will arrive in stores. I had a blast with these books because as the series develops I'm learning more and more about the Arcane world. No, I hadn't figured out all the details when I wrote the first book. I still don't know everything! I'm discovering the secrets of the Arcane community right along with you and it's great fun.

BUT, I watched Oprah the other day and I had a revelation: In my next incarnation, I'm coming back as a positive-thinking-self-help book author. I mean, it is obvious that is the real secret of success in the writing life. It is the best way to get on talk shows and to hit the top of all the bestseller lists. What's more, positive-thinking-self-help books are a lot like cookbooks. No matter how many titles appear, there always seems to be room for a new one. It is obviously impossible to saturate that market.

Now, what I really like about the positive-thinking-self-help genre is that anyone can write one of these suckers. After all, who among us does not feel ready, willing and eminently qualified to advise other people how to live their lives??? You want me to tell you how you're screwing up? No problemo. Just ask.

Let's face it, how hard is it to tell someone that they should think positive, or that they ought to surround themselves with people who radiate positive energy or that they must let go of negative thoughts and focus on the positive?

Yep, I can write one of those books. I realize, of course, that you need a hook for that genre and, boy howdy, have I got one. My working title is: The Real Secret; Pessimists Are Usually Right.

Got any better positive-thinking-self-help titles for me?

Sincerely,
Jayne

Fellow walks into library and says could you tell me where the self-help books are?

Yes, but wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

How about: 'Pessimists are Usually Right: but Optimists Have More Fun'?
It's a tough call... being blissfully clueless or getting to say 'I told you so'. Hmmm.

Anyway, you don't REALLY need to switch genres to do the whole 'positive thinking' message. Just stick a sentence in the back of your books saying 'and now you can enjoy a whole (fill in the time until your next book is out) to re-read and speculate endlessly!!!'

Remember! Exclamation points are the hallmark of being positive!

(PS I'm only grouchy because my preordered book is late. In the immortal words of fangirls everywhere, 'you write good')

The title works, but you could add in smaller font,

"A Practical Guide to a Positive Life"

(Because the word "positive" must appear somewhere on the front or back cover of any self-help book)

Jayne, you have such a unique talent, you can't possibly switch out of romance. We'd all be crushed.
I DO learn from your books. Every single one. I learn things about writing romance, about characterization, about pacing.
And I learn things about myself as a reader and simply as a person.
Your books offer great insights into perspectives.

That said, I love your title and think Oprah would jump all over you. :-) Maybe you can squeeze a romance in there somewhere? LOL

HUGS,

Lori

"The Real Secret; Pessimists Are Usually Right"

Hmmm, you've been talking to that Fallon Jones again, haven't you?

aussie dee: Great library joke. I'm going to remember that one.

Shoshana: Good title! Maybe you should write this book and get on Oprah.

Tina: You and Shoshan need to get together and go on Oprah. Both of you seem to have a better handle on this book than I do!

Lori, you're right. It would be good to stick romance somwhere in the title. Pessimists need romance too.

Lynn: Fallon Jones does have a unique outlook, doesn't he?

EG: Anything to give you you a chuckle, my friend!

No, Jayne, I can't improve on that title. Hilarious! (see, I can be positive)

Any reason why you can't write this book in your "spare time" and right now? I think we would see you on Oprah in a heartbeat.

Thanks, Stella. I'm still working on the title, though. I think it is key. How does "You, Too, Can Become A Positive Pessimist" sound?

LMAO!

If you need any "filler," you know my number.

Positive Pessimist? A good ring. In fact, go with that. What do you think about an exclammation point on the end?

EL: I'll keep you in mind for "filler." Thanks!

Stella: Yep, the new title definitely needs an exclamation point!!!!

Jayne: I prefer the title that your bookseller heroine in Deep Waters mentioned: Why Self-Help Books Don't Help.

How about:

I'm positive! Pessimists Are Usually Right.

OR

Proof positive! Pessimists Are Usually Right.

That way you get the word "Positive", the exclamation point and the trip to Oprah.

How about "Postive Thinking: How I learned to be a more Postive Person by Reading Romance Novels."

But seriously, we can't lose great romance writers to Self-Help books.

Blogger Jayne Ann Krentz said...

tal: The problem with that title was that it didn't have the word "positive" in it.

dr. Christine: Okay, that title definitely works!

Wendy: Alright! I like that part about not losing romance writers to the self-help genre!!!!

positive thinking brings positive engeries to you. I am strong believer in being postive in life and it comes back to you

Tal: Great title!

Tina: I absolutely agree with you. But how many positive thinking self-help books does it take to learn that lesson? That's what amazes me. The first major self-help book that I remember (because my mom bought it and read it when I was a little kid) was Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking. It has been in print forever. As far as I can tell, every self-help book that has come down the pike since that one is just another version of that message. And Peale's book probably wasn't the first. Actually, it might be interesting to study the history of that genre...

Jayne, remember how you promised a shrink who posted on your old blog that one of these days you'd write a psychiatrist type who WASN'T either useless or the villain? I can see it now: Heroine has just written a bestselling self-help book; hero is a shrink who thinks self-help books do more harm than good; they appear together on Oprah...

And for case histories of screwed-up people for your own self-help book, you have your fellow Quills (not to mention we who post....)

After leaving the romance section of a bookstore with the latest release from which ever Quill it happens to be I generally don't wander in to the self-help section, nor do I watch Oprah. But all the same can be said for the weight-loss books, only they also "have buy my supplement" in the formula.

I must cast my vote for Wendy's title as best pick. It might be kind of true too.

And here I thought everybody else was always thinking positively already. Everybody but my doctor seems to be giving out that advice. Not that he's a pessimist, just a realist.

It's not that I can't find any positives. It's when I try to focus on them that I soon run out.

How about:

Positive Pessism: All You Need for a Realistic Life

But I definitely agree with Wendy's title. Romances give me lots of positive thoughts.

LOL, aussie dee. You beat me to it. I thought of that book title also. I positively love all of Jayne's work.

And I'm proud to say I got S&B the day it was released and have read same. The relationship between Raine & Zack reminds me an awful lot of my beloved Seattle series of books. I didn't care for the Arcane society at first but it's grown on me and I can't wait for the next installement!

WTG, Jayne! Positively!!!!

Zeusly: You're right. Who needs a self-helb book if you've got a great romance novel?

Karende: Yet another marketable title. Thanks! Maybe I'll write more than one of these books.

Renurgis: That's the spirit!

Margaret: So glad to hear that you're getting into the series!!! I really appreciate it.
