    Follow the Winding Road

When Stella asked me if I'd like to blog with the RWQ group today, I almost missed the chance because cyberspace gobbled her email to me. The spam filter never even got a chance to hijack it. And cyberspace also gobbled several other emails I was supposed to get. I'm blaming the aliens.

2008 has been a really intense year so far--very mixed. I turned 40-something last month and for my birthday--well, a week or so befoore my birthday--my editor called me and asked me if I was sitting doown. I was. She proceeded to tell me that Darkling--the third in my Otherworld Series--hit the NYT extended list. I tried tto scream in her ear but considering I was down with a horrendous cold, the best I could do was squeak.

Now, you have to understand, hitting ANY part of the NYT list has been one of my major goals for many, many years. Since long before I held my first contract in my hands. So it was like Christmas all over, only better.

I know the gals here on RWQ are old friends with the NYT list but I'm a newbie to the experience. And I can't imagine ever feeling blase about seeing my name there. Oh sure, the newness must wear off but still...I felt like I was in the running for the Oscars. Sure, oonly one person each week can take that #1 slot but the fact that I'd managed a place on what's a very limited roster had me walking on clouds for a week. But that moment--achieving that goal--waswas a long time coming in my life.

I've been writing since I was three. Before I could even print my name I was making up stories. Published my first poem when I was fifteen. First short story came a decade later, along with a slew of articles. Seven novels in the closet later, I finally did it.

In 1996, I sat in the car crying with relief and joy as I held my first contract for a nonfiction book. Eight nonfiction books later, I broke into the mystery realm. Eight mysteries (in two series) later, I managed to land my first urban fantasy on the shelves. When Witchling hit the USA Today list, I knew that I was right where I needed to be.

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to grow up and be a fantasy/SF author. My childhood was a flurry of Bradbury and Asimov, Heinlein and Pohl, Simak and Chalker, L'Engle and Clarke. Any book that remotely hinted of the extraordinary caught my eye. I lived for the future, for other worlds, other dimensions, other realms. As time went on, I discovered Anne McCaffrey, and Joan D. Vinge, and Ursula Le Guin. In ninth grade, I dove headfirst into Watership Down--my very favorite book. I considerr Watership Down to be epic fantasy. I never came up for air. That book stole my heart, held it captive, and I still cry every time I read the ending.

I skipped high school, went straight into college at age 15 and began to discover other authors outside of the Fan/SF realm. But my love for fantasy and SF never deserted me. And I swore--I knew it in my heart--I was meant to write books in that genre.

And now-- after seven novels in the closet that will never see thhe light of day, after nonfiction metaphysical, after paranormal mysteries, after chick lit mysteries, I'm finally writing a series I absolutely love. I'm living the dream I had since I was so very young.

Oh, the circumstances are different than I thought they'd be. And the route I took to get here was a winding on. But I've learned from everything and I use every bit of experience I've had in my work. The journey itself has been at times a nightmare, many times a dream. From leaving an abusive ex who turned me into a punching bag at the end, to living in a converted school bus on the back of five acres, to an unexpected whirlwind romance with my current husband...all these faerie tale liike adventures have made up who I am today. Cinderella lives, but she didn't wait for Prince Charming to take life in her own hands.

So now I write urban fantasy--the Otherworld Series. And I'm loving it. When people ask me to sum up what the books are about, I tell them--think Charlie's Angels meets Buffy meets Harry Pottter for adults. Think a group of misfits out to save the world, who are up against incredible odds, but they have to try.

Are they romance? Not really, though there's plenty of hot dragons and shapeshifters and relationships and sex. In my mind, the true relationship that weaves throughout the series is the one between the three sisters--their love and commitment to each other, to their family of friends, to doing what's right even when it's hard.

Ever wonder if the monsters under your bed are real....?

Meet the D'Artigo Sisters--three half human, half-Fae, wild and ssexy members of the OIA--the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Camille,, a witch, Delilah, a werecat, and Menolly, an acrobat extraordinaire turned vampire, are sent Earthside to keep them out of trouble by their superiors, who consider the girls nothing but a bunch of bumbling half-breeds. But the girls soon find themselves smack in the middle of Demon-Central when Shadow Wing, the leader of the Subterranean Realms, decides to attempt a coup on both Earth and Otherworld.

From their home in a seedy suburb of Seattle, the sisters must use every ounce of erratic power they have to thwart the havoc about to unfold. Together with Camille's lust-crazed and not-quite-human boyfriends, an FBH (full-blood-human) detective named Chase Johnson who has a penchant for spicy beef tacos and wild women, a gorgeous hunk of dragon flesh named Smoky, Iris the house sprite, and Maggie--their baby calico gargoyle, they must use all of their collective talents to prevent the demons from taking over as the three sisters attempt to save two worlds, one monster at a time.

The books are first person, and rotate through the three sisters' points of view (Witchling is narrated by Camille, Changeling by Delilah, and Darkling is Menolly's story). Dragon Wytch--back to Camille's story--will be out on Ju July 1st. There will be at least nine books in the series.

To celebrate, I'm giving away a signed copy of the first three books to one winner here on the blog. Leave me a comment. Tell me what goals or dreams--big or small--you've accomplished in yourour life. Tell me one thing you've done that makes you proud of yourself. Or tell me what goal you're working toward--one that youu want with all your heart. I'll pick the winner randomly.

You never know whether you're going to succeed. Life offers no guarantees. But this, I can guarantee you: if you quit before you reach the end, you will most assuredly fail. When you try, you succeed--even iif the end result isn't what you thought it might be.

The joy is in the journey. The thrill of accomplishment comes at the end of a long, winding road. Let your passion shine through. Shake off those old goals and dreams--is there still something there you want to do? Don't wait for tomorrow--start today. Because today iis really all you ever have. Each day you wake up offers you another chance to follow your heart. There's no telling what's hiding around the corner, so make the most of it.

How wonderful that you have achieved a major goal in your life, Yasmine. As I have achieved mine, I keep expanding them because if there are no goals left, then I think there's no reason to pursue your dreams any further.

I play tournament bridge. Of course, no one is born knowing bridge so I had a learning period of many years. One by one, my goals were accomplished - to win a club game, to win at a tournament, to win at a Regional and then at a National tournament.

Then a big one, to qualify and play in a World Championship and I did that in 1970. But then I wanted to do better than just to play, I wanted a high finish. I got a second place in a secondary event one year in New Orleans (still have the loving cup) and then finally I was second in a World Championship, a silver medal.

The gold medal still eludes me but that keeps me playing and working to improve my game.

I now found another goal.. to raise money for charities by offering myself as a bridge partner and this year, for the third time, I was 'bought' on my National Public Radio station.

Life is good, even in the sixties, there is much to work towards.

Thanks for posing this interesting challenge, Yasmine!!

Like you, I've always told stories. My goal was to become published. I did that, though my books are all e-books at the moment. My next goal is to have a contract with a NY Print publisher, and to work towards that, I have an agent now. I think once I realize that dream, I'll also want hit the extended bestseller lists, etc. But for right now, my agent is shopping three books with various NY publishers and I'm continuing to write for both print and e-book publishers.

    Hi Yasmine

My greatest achievement is grabbing my husband early - we met at 18, married by 23 - before someone else did. We have travelled, enjoyed impossibly romantic times and most of all he has developed hugs of olympic quality in response to our experiences of parenthood.
At 34, i am struggling with making playdoh and colouring in the lines in mothermode to our 3 childen (son 3.5yrs, twins 2yrs). My dream is to write a romantic fantasy (do you call it romfant?) novel. In the meantime - its all about research and enjoying the fruits of others' labour.

Congratulations on meeting your goals! As for me, I've reached one - I finally have an actual, real book with my name on the cover that I can hold in my hand. I also raised four wonderful kids to (semi-)successsful adulthood. My next goal is to publish an even better book and to enjoy life with my hubby.

Goals I have already reached... Well there are a number of those. I was always being told that I wouldn't be able to get into the armed forces so I made it a goal to do just that. Well that one was accomplished. While in I thought about what I wanted to do with my life and beings that I was already good at art I decided to become a tattoo artist. Recently I got the equipment needed to practice and have been working with it. This would be the one goal I am really proud of even if some family and friends disapprove. LIfe offers us many paths it is our choice which to take... and that was mine.

Coming from a rather dysfunctional family background, my overriding goal as a kid was to 'escape'. I was very fortunate in finding a wonderful man to marry, and from there, even the bad times turned out good! I got the 'safe' family life that I had never had. I got to travel and to experience a life without the constant drama and fear.

    Congrats on your success!

My goals are probably a little weird/strange compared to most people.

My first goal I did and it was fairly a nromal goal - to be self-employed, I was and still am.

My next goal was one that I never saw coming. When my mother's health became bad enough that she needed someone with her 24/7. I was lucky enough that I can do it. I don't make much through my business anymore since most of my time is spent with mom, but it's allowed me to do so. I'm happy and content.

Yasmine, it has been hard to think of my goals and what they might be. So many have been short term. Like moving to Texas so I could be closer to my family (my hubby and I did that last year). Waking up and going to work everyday is a goal (somedays it seems impossible). But long term goals I am still working on. I have a lot that I still want to acomplish (like selling my jewelry that I make) but one of the biggest goals I have had in my life was to travel the world. I have only seen a little bit but I feel that I have started that completing that goal. So far I have lived in South Korea and visited Japan, China, India, the Marshall Islands, Venezuala, and England. I would have to say my other major goal is to be a great Mom to my son and since that's a forever ongoing process I don't know if that will ever be acomplished.

I am proud to have had my son. I was scared when I went into labor but I imagine everyone is especially when it is their first child. I made it through and I have a great son. While I was pregnant I continued my education and graduated two months after my son was born. Graduating college was my biggest goal other than being a great mom. I read about authors and I want to be one myself so my next goal is to become an author. I know its hard work and there are no guarantees but just writing a book is a goal completed, wether it gets published or not. All of the authors here inspire me to try and achieve my goal.

For me, motherhood was my greatest achievement. It took us awhile to get the hang of it, and then it ended up being twins, so it was like a two for one deal. I loved being a mom and can proudly say that surviving those early and adolescent years was my greatest achievement. Now they are both grown, immeshed in their new careers, and still call home once a week. My next big goal is to survive retirement with my hubby when it rolls around next year. Now, that's a challenge!

Starting college at 25 was a big deal for me. I didn't graduate highschool, and had been working full-time at an mind numbing job. I finally decided I'd had enough, it was time for a big change! Now I'm in college and loving life! :)

Leslie: exactly--achieving a goal is wonderful, but the journey is really what makes up your life. :)

Cathy: raising twins can't have been easy and that they still call home every week after being out on their own says something about how they feel about you. :) Good luck on the retirement thing--make to-do lists for him. Lots and lots of lists. *grins*

Rebekah: Thanks! I'm so glad you like them. Going back to school is no easy deal but you did it, and you made it! Congratulations!

Brooke: I love indie bookstores. And yes--it's never to late to change your direction. I quit a job at 30, left my ex, and moved into a converted school bus!

Poison Star: Yay for you! Getting your degree is wonderful (and a subject that is of great interest to me). It's hard to leave that environment but now you can take what you've learned and put it to use!

Rhyan--Yes, this is a major accomplishment for you. And the journey it key--enjoy it, and you don't need to have a set 'end' goal--you can make short term ones along the way. :)

My current goals, while less grandious, are much more within my reach. Very high on my list is to finish my current WIP (before ECWC 2008) and to be the very best crit partner I can be for the crazy folks who ask me to share my opinion - and actually listen when I do!

You feel such a wonderful sense of achievement when your strive towards a goal you have set yourself. As they say the journey to your end destination is just as important as the destination itself.

My big life goal has always been to own my home, which is now nearly a reality. All the scrimping and saving has been worth it, as very soon I will have my own little haven; filled with books, of course!!

Seriously, I really have to go back and buy Yasmine's books. I'm not kidding. Where are my keys?

Wow! Congratulations, Yasmine! Welcome to RWQ, too. What a great name you have. I just added your Otherworld series to my list of upcoming Amazon purchases. As I've no sisters I always enjoy dancing through the dynamic of it when reading.

Tell me what goals or dreams--big or small--you've accomplished in your life.
Self-supporting, non-status-quo, marcher to my own drum kinda life. Loving it.

Tell me one thing you've done that makes you proud of yourself.
Made it, on my own, raising two children to be wonderful people in their own right. Have spent 20+ years in a male dominated industry and continue to shine.

I there still something there you want to do?
Well, yes, of course. Travel, lots and often. The HHP and I do when we can and dream when we can't. Next on our list is Ireland although the HHP has been there a few times, I've not and he's excited to show me his favorite place.

Thanks for giving me a nudge into stumbling onto my heart's path. I haven't visited there in some time! ;-)

Cherie: I had to heal from an abusive stepfather. I know where you're coming from. And when I finally accepted my own worth, I met my Samwise--my current husband. It's been almost 15 years and it's only gotten better.

Eilis: Yo, chica, hey babe. Good to see you hear. And July's coming closer, y'know. :)

Lilly: Congrats! I still don't own my own home and that's one of my goals, too. I'm so glad you were able to make your goal come true.

Dara: Hey--thanks for the note, and yeah, I've got one hell of a cover artist.

Lynne: LOL...well, I hope you can find them--and that you like them when you read them. :)

Deb: I think I've seen you posting on a few blogs in the Blogosphere. Your nick looks familiar. :) Here's to marching ot your own drum--that's the only way to go! You can only live your own life, never anybody else's. (and I've got some very loyal and wonderful readers--speaking of the 'torch').

I like to think that I’m still on my journey and haven’t reached the end yet. I really want to get my degree in Administrative Justice and see where life takes me :o)

My current goal is to set myself up working at home, legal and bookkeeping. Being a night owl, I wouldn't have to worry about trying to get up every morning, lol, work in the comfort of home and have more control than working for others.

You do get great covers, Yasmine, this one's my favorite.

Great guest blogger entry! I was wondering about the strange spelling, but I figured it was just the blog.

My dream is to write a book. I have had this dream for a long time, but I am not a writer nor did I have an idea. The drunk-who-calls-herself-my-muse finally gave me the idea, but made sure it was something that I will have to spend years reseaching. Stupid drunk muse.

Still, it is a dream and sometihng to work towards...

Goals... My first one was to escape from my family. I did it, and spent 3 decades as far away as I could get and still be in the US!

My second was to finish college someday - which I finally did in ‘99, after taking my first class in 1965.

Along the way I raised 2 kids, mostly on my own, discovered I was a lot more self-sufficient than I’d thought, finally came to terms with being raped as a teenager and figured out it really wasn’t my fault at all, found DH and kept him alive and happy a good 15 years longer than the docs thought he’d make it.

Now I’m concentrating on packing, packing, packing, and hoping to move by mid-April. Actually, I WILL move, it’s just that I’d like to sell the place here before I go there.

    Hey, Yasmine!
Was so excited for you when you posted about making THE LIST! I'm sur there will many more books and lists for your to write and conquer!!
...and I'm sure I'll be reading and enjoying them as well.

My biggest goal that I managed to achieve was becoming an RN. It was a long, long windy route that I took, with many stops and goes...and years...along the way...and naysayers & personal demons to boot.

Bullocks to all of them and those that would hold us dreamers back!

Keep dreaming and reaching for your goals, girls!

Woohoo! Yasmine! Congratulations! Your books are fantastic!

I feel to dream is to expand your knowledge and horizons. I have dreamed of many things and have accomplished a lot in my 47 years here on earth so far. I work at an art/office supply store which is my ultimate dream! I love to draw, paint, craft, etc. I get to see all the new items that come out. Heaven! Then I am a reviewer/editor part-time and absolutely love it! Just started this job a little over a year ago. I have been an avid reader all my life so I kind of fell into this position plus English was one of my best subjects.

To live is to dream. Breathe in the fresh air outside and let yourself go. Close your eyes and feel yourself floating as if on a cloud. Let your mind wander. Think about the things you want to do. Revel in the happy sensations it fills you with. I have spent many a day dreaming like this. It fills me with a renewed energy to go out and act upon my dreams.

    Welcome!

One of my goals is simple: to read your books! They sound wonderful.

My proudest accomplishment? Earned a Ph.D. at the age of 52. Ladies: Don't let ANYBODY -- including yourself -- tell you it's too late.

And new, exciting goal: Holding my first grandchild, this summer.

All bright blessings, Yasmine, on your exciting journey!

Hi Yasmine, Congratulations on your success!

As for me, my goal in life was to travel the world. Ever since I started working, I saved up money and travelled to at least one foreign country each year. I wish I could travel more often, but I need more moolah for that lifestyle.

So my future goal is to make even more money! :) I hope to set up a business soon. Wish me luck!

Thanks for asking this question. I had fun reading other people's goals!

My greatest accomplishment to date is being able to take my kids and leave my psyco ex husband. It took a lot of courage and determination. A good dose of fear didn't hurt either. I am now 30, a divorced mom with full custody of two beautiful kids Chip is almost 6, Skyla will be 3 in less than a month. I am going to college full time and I am 3 quarters away from having a Microcomputer Support Specialist Degree. My major upcoming goal is to graduate, find a halfway decent paying job, and be able to support myself and my babies on my own without worrying whether the child support will show up or not (more often than not it doesn't).

    Thanks so much!

Checking in late, but hey, it's my sabbatical (or however you spell the dang thing).

Welcome, Yasmine! I'm going to find your books and add them to the TBR pile. Having started in science fiction myself, I'm really feeling the whole paranormal groove.

Great blog.....Congratulations on making the NYT list. I am sure it is just the first of many times that your books will be on it.
My goal is to stay healthy and watch my two beautiful great grandchildren grow up and hopefully to improve the world they will live in. Reuse, recycle and go green.......

Deseng: I'm so glad you like my work. :) And I'm also happy you've found work which speaks to your heart--what a rare joy in today's world!

Dr. Christine: I hope you like them when you read them. And yes--my mother went back and got her GED when she was 50--she was so scared to, but I convinced her she could and she did. She also quit smoking when she was 62--cold turkey, for good, after fifty years of smoking two packs a day. She proved that age doesn't have to stop you from achieving a goal. :)

Bunny: Hey, making money so you can go traveling is a wonderful goal--what countries have you been to? And what have been your favorites?

toyhabilitation: You can do it--those 30 credit hours will go by and you'll have your degree. :)

Stephanie: yeah, that's not an easy break to make, but you sound like you've come through it and now you're really making a good life for you and your children--something that your children will thank you for again and again as they grow older. :) Congratulations.

Elizabeth: Thanks! And if your TBR pile is anything like mine...*shudders and grins*

Rubyd: Good goals, all of them. One of my goals is to leave the world a little bit better place for my having been here.

Congrats on hitting the NYT list!

I set a goal last year (2007) to read 10 books a month ~ 120 books. Although I didn't make my goal, I'm still thrilled with the fact that I was able to read 118 books. This may not seem like much of an accomplishment or much reading to some, but considering the fact that my Mom was diagnosed with both breast and ovarian cancer and had 3 surgeries, chemo and radiation and we had 2 new little granddaughters born in our family, I was tickled pink just to find the extra time to read.

1st congratulations on the NYT list.

It's so much easier for me to type this then it is for me to actually speak about.

My number one goal that I've accomplished in my life is to become self sufficient and raise my 4 children without any help. I had been so scared when I left my now ex-husband. I had also been in a really abusive relationship and being on my own with barely no income scared me more then what he could do to me. I have now been on my supporting me and my children with what I bring in. There is no one to support us and I'm happier then I have ever been in my life.

Also I have accomplished a goal that many have not been able to and I have no clue why it had even become a goal but after my ex husband killed himself I decided to be celibate for a year.lol. Though I do enjoy having fun that goes with it; It just seemed like something I should do. Maybe as a cleansing of sorts.

One goal I have been working toward but hasn't been an easy task is finding certain books by authors that I have taken a liking to there work. And of course your one of them otherwise I wouldn't be here writing this today.

    Love, Light, and Bright blessings

Rosalind...you have accomplished one of the most important goals in the world: your children are safe and taken care of, as are you. You can do it on your own, and you've proved it. :)
