Valentine's Day!

Photobucket

Hello all you romantics!

To celebrate this special day with you, the Quills are going to talk about romance, chocolate, wine, flowers, movies, and – you guessed it – books!

Some of our fine Quills are unable to be here today, so I’m posting information on their behalf. Others will pop in to contribute now that this blog is online.

Yesterday, my husband brought me home some beautiful tulips. Talk about romantic! And it wasn’t even Valentine’s Day yet! Can’t wait to see what he has for me on the big day.

I have adorable little boxes of chocolates for my sons and my daughter-in-law, and a big fun sucker for my grandson.

In keeping with the holiday, here are some questions for you.

Is there anyone you buy for?
Someone who buys for you?
What’s your favorite gift to receive for Valentine’s Day?
Your most romantic date?
Your absolute favorite romantic movie and book?

For me, I’ve always loved HONOR'S SPLENDOR, by Julie Garwood. The book is wonderful in so many ways, but when I think purely romantic, as in caring for each other, sharing and tender loving, that book wins hands down.
My favorite romantic movie is... Wow. I don’t see a lot of romantic movies. I yelled downstairs to ask my husband, and he laughed.
I said, “Surely I’ve seen a romantic movie, right?”
He replied, “You? I doubt it.”
Then we thought and thought – and finally (don’t laugh) settled on Terminator. That was romantic, right? He travelled through time to get to her (okay, basically just to knock her up because his son would go on to save the world, yada yada) but still, Michael Bein!? Oh yeah. Sexy – and I guess that’s as close to a romantic movie as I get on short notice.
NOTE: After writing this, my husband and I went out and we thought of more romantic movies!
Love Actually - LOVED IT!
Music and Lyrics By - Fabulous movie!
There. Now I feel more legitimate for Valentine's Day.

Stella Cameron said: Valentine cards are a weakness of mine. This year I went mad (more mad than usual) and sent one to those I knew would never expect such a thing from me. I even sent one to the "To be announced bump" in my cousin's tummy--in England. Claire and David are expecting their first baby and are thrilled enough to fire up enthusiasm in a major city--and they don't know if this will be a boy or a girl. I'll let you know when I do. An added piece of romance for these two; they got married on a tiny beach in Kauai, without formal plans, and showed up here in Washington State a few days later. We put together a family celebration (okay, so that means all of about ten people) and had a fabulous time.

Jerry has been nursing a watch along for about a year. Every night at midnight the alarm goes off. Now since it's a very high pitched noise he doesn't seem to notice but I do!!! Sooo, I have a big surprise for him, I found a watch that does everything but clean your teeth and since I bought it at Costco, I can also chortle about getting a bargain. I love bargains.

For me, being with Jerry is all the romance I need. How much more lucky and blessed can you be than to find your soul-mate in life? We love so many of the same things, including our children, grandchildren and beloved animals. Now don't think, "What syrupy, boring stuff!" When we fight, there is a definite blue haze in the air!

Lavyrl Spencer's MORNING GLORY captured me. I still see images from that story in my mind. Will is a true hero, strong, gentle, honorable. I've read many wonderfully romantic books but this stands out. Kathryn Belmont wrote a little book called NIGHT MUSIC and again, the images were lovely. Our own Elizabeth Guest writing as Suzanne Simmons Guntrum wrote THE GOLDEN RAINTREE and stole my heart. I could go on and on but that's enough.

My favorite movies?
The Remains of the Day - subtle, filled with longing but no happy ending.
Sleepless in Seattle - lonely voices in the night, oh, my. And a fabulous ending.
Ghost - romantic and sexy.
Pride and Prejudice - swoon.
Anything Jane Austen - more swooning.
Enough blathering from me! Love to each of you on Valentine's Day!

Elizabeth Lowell said: Hmmmm. Nalini Singh is a great romantic read for those with a paranormal yen. Newcomers should begin with SLAVE TO SENSATION, and then read on! That's what I'm doing.

Susan Andersen said: I haven't seen many movies this year but I sat through Hairspray with a big smile on my face and enjoyed The Golden Compass. A movie I want to see is Juno, but I never seem to have the time. Gonna have to do something about that.
On the book front I picked two very different types. One is BAD MONKEYS, which has one of the most unique premises I've ever read. The other is A WEDDING STORY, a classic romance I can read and reread and never get tired of it.

Jayne Anne Krentz said: "This is the perfect place to mention the book that really fired me up to write romance: Anne McCaffrey's RING OF FEAR. It was written way back in 1971 -- not one of her science fiction novels. It had horses, an unusual hero and boy, howdy was it politically incorrect. Loved it. I didn't start writing until several years later but when I did, you can bet that book was still there in my head, fueling my imagination. It is one of the few books on my keeper shelf. Thank you, Anne McCaffrey!!!!

Elizabeth Guest said: One of my favorite romance books and movies is Pride and Prejudice. My favorite version of the movie is the newest one with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden.

As our Valentine gift to you, tonight I’ll randomly pick one poster from all those who replied, and she’ll win a special Valentine’s Day package from the Quills!

Prizes include these autographed books:
Key West by Stella Cameron, hard cover
Hard to Handle by Lori Foster
Servant: The Awakening by L.L. Foster
Coming Undone by Susan Andersen
Night Life by Elizabeth Guest
Always Time to Die by Elizabeth Lowell, hard cover

Good luck, and Happy Valentine’s Day to you!

Is there anyone you buy for?
We don't usually make a big deal out of Valentine's Day, but I do send my daughter a card and something small and I do the same thing for my husband. This year, she got a funny card, a wooden picture frame (it was cute and very 20-going-on-21-appropriate), and a little white chocolate hippo. He got a card and one of those fancy, 70% pure cacoa chocolate candy bars (if you're going with chocolate indulgence, indulge big, right?)

Someone who buys for you?
My husband. I got a dozen strawberries dipped in white chocolate (mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)

What’s your favorite gift to receive for Valentine’s Day?
See above :)

Your most romantic date?
That's a toughie, because I'm not a very "hearts and flowers" girl. I guess just snuggling on the couch together, watching a movie and cuddling.

Your absolute favorite romantic movie and book?
I'm a fan of the whole befuddled-Hugh Grant genre: Four Weddings and Funeral; Nottinghill; Love Actually (not as much a Hugh Grant movie, but it's along the same vein). There's something very endearing about him when he's doing that type of role. (And he must be a good actor, because apparently he's more like Hugh Laurie's House character in real life.)
As for books, I have too many favorites to pick just one off the top of my head. However, there are a couple by LaVyrle Spencer that I loved: Seperate Beds and Years. Also, I'm afraid I'll sound like I'm sucking up, but I've probably re-read all of my Krentz/Quick books more than any of the others. I'm very fond of Rachel Gibson's work, too, especially The Trouble With Valentine's Day and See Jane Score

I read so much that it is hard to decide on one favorite book. How about a genre, lately it has been paranormal. But the romance is always better with a little (or a lot) of smart-ass comments between the two leads.
I have been having fun recently introducing my husband to some of my favorite Sci-Fi romances. He just finished "Shield's Lady" by Jayne Ann Krentz.

Happy Valentine's Day ladies!

As for me - hmmmmmmmmmm like Dinah said I read a lot so it's hard to pick a book, but if I had to it would probably be Summer Sunrise, an oldie that I"ve had for about 20 years nd it shows.

I don't buy for anyone, and noone buys for me (single and don't date).

I hope all you lovely ladies have a wonderful Valentine's Day filled with love and yummy chocolate.

I don't have anyone to buy for, boohoo. Hopefully next year it will be different.

If I was to get anything my favorite is chocolate, anything with chocolate.

I love Jane Austen movies too. I also love a few of Drew Barrymore's movies;EverAfter and Never Been Kissed I enjoyed. Another quirky romance comedy that I liked and was fun is 6 Days and 7 Nights.I love too many books to name them.

I've been known to 'black-out' Valentines day as it can become depressing for the single, unattached, socially awkward woman that I am. But now I just treat it like any other day and find my romance between the covers of all the great books you Quills right.

I don't buy for anyone and if I ever receive anything it is usually from my parents who feel sorry for their sweet 16 + 20 years & never been kissed daughter. (Good thing I've got books that tell me all about it!)

As for my favorite romances I reread Julie Garwood's historicals at least once a year. My fave is probably "Saving Grace". Sorry to comment so long, I should do this on my own blog.

Wow! Godiva chocolates....what a nice surpise for me today! I always get my husband a mushy card. Plus a funny one from our dog! Of course, we are pretty mushy all of the time...the grandkids just kind of say, "Ewww...there they go again!" I am one of the lucky ones to have a loving and giving spouse!

I've always liked the sci-fi stuff better than romance movies so I'm with Lori, Terminator is one of the best! As for the best romance book, I'd have to say Orchid by Jayne Castle takes the #1 spot on my bookshelf!

Gosh, I want to win those books!

I don't buy anyone gifts for Valentine's Day, but I like to cook and bake. I made some lovely heart-shaped flat biscuits today. (Apparently it's time to buy new baking powder.)

My favorite romance novel is Pride and Prejudice, but Say No to Joe? and Coming Undone are definitely high on the list. Aside from the Quills, I also like Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Judith McNaught.

Romantic movies? I like anything with Colin Firth. Doris Day movies are fun. I like The Notebook, Overboard, and Disney's Beauty and the Beast. My tastes are definitely eclectic.

I'd love to win the Valentine's Day gift. I want to read some of the other quills' books, but I can't justify buying them when my to-be-read pile is ten feet tall. So please randomly pick me!

I buy for my husband and children.
I rarely get a gift since my birthday is tomorrow - either way it would only happen at the last minute.
I do enjoy getting flowers at work
We spent a very romantic week in Rome this fall.
Favorite romantic movie - it is a toss up between Chocolate and The Big Easy
I just can NOT narrow down to even my top three romantic books.

By the way, we just had an ice storm which got us out of school for three days. So I got to read a LOT!!! I just LOVED Hard to Handle :)

I buy for my daughters. They are 10 and 7. Somehow I've managed to setup traditions that have them believing in not only Santa, but the Easter Bunny, and Cupid as well. They wanted to write notes to cupid this year.

They are getting somewhat skeptical this year, so cupid brought stuff mom NEVER lets them have (stuffed animals & candy), and mom got them a small beanie baby and a chocolate bar.

I think I've got one more year of believers.

Bought for me? A dear friend "helped" my daughters get me flowers from a florist - and had them delivered to my work. He's a sweetie (my good friend's husband) and knew it would make an impression on this single mom.

P.S. - Lori, I totally thing Terminator is a love story. True Lies is one of my favorites.

Lori,

There is an awesome scene in a book by Maureen Child (Loving You or Finding You, I can't remember which) where that is the movie (Terminator) that one woman cites as her favourite romance movie ("I came across time for you").

I don't have a significant other to buy for or who buys for me so Valentine's is pretty low key.

For Romantic movies, I love the A&E version of Pride and PRejudice. Like you, though, I will take an action flick over a strict romance so this took some thinking. I guess Casablanca would be my choice.

ROmantic books? Much more into romantic books. I love Julie Garwood's historicals (Ransom and Honor's Splendor are on that list). I also love Johanna Lindsey's Gentle Warrior.... oh, there are too many books to list here. ;)

THink I will take the night off from marking and read some romance. ;)

Now I'll have to go reread "Honor's Splendour". Ahh...she warmed his feet! That gets me every time. Maybe I could find a fellow that way? Hmmm...

As an unattached lady, Valentine's Day is a bit of a bummer for me, but I really loved it when I worked in child care. Everything is brighter when seen through a child's eyes!

Happy V-Day, Y'all!

I always make up goodie boxes for my sons' who are away at school. I include their favorite coffee, See's Candy, Itunes gift cards and theif favorite bagged candy (one loves jelly bellies, the other peanut butter m&m's). Then I buy a potted flower for my parents.

I agree about Terminator making the romantic movie list, love it. Also Ghost, Nottinghill and Armaggedeon (making that ultimate sacrifice to save the world).

Have so many favorite romance reads it's hard to pick just one book or author, though I did just finish rereading all the Susan Elizabeth Phillip's books, which are definitely great romances.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.

I buy for my kids and my hubby.
My kids love buying me candy and cards and so does my hubby. A few of my clients bring me candy and cards. My favorite gift was a love letter my hubby wrote. My absolute fave. Most romanctic date is when he surprised me with a candlelit dinner he made outside with a tent. It was a fabulous nite. Fave movie was Love Actually and book was The Wedding by Julie Garwood.

Hiya Quills!
Happy Valentine's Day to allayaz! Now, to answer the questions:

Is there anyone you buy for?
I buy cards and little gifts for our kids... yeah, they still love it...lol.
Someone who buys for you?
My 17 year old son wrote me a poem this year for Valentine's day... it's incredible :-) The HHP and I celebrated by going to the Cheesecake Factory! Ha!
What’s your favorite gift to receive for Valentine’s Day?
Cheesecake and/or dark chocolate... preferrably combined ;-)
Your most romantic date?
When the HHP took me to Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast for a walk along the breaking surf and proposed to me when we got home... with the kids each asking part of "the" question.*sigh*
Your absolute favorite romantic movie and book?
Favorite romantic movie is Titanic. Favorite romantic book is a little more difficult. Okay, a lot more difficult. I have so many favorites. I could pick one from each of the Quills easily... but I'll at least whittle it down to my favorite romantic trilogy, how's that? The Three Sisters trilogy from Nora Roberts. I've re-read it about five times by now.

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

Hi,

I am an empty nester for the first time, and my son did tell us he sent a Valentine's package from college (out-of-state) but it would be arriving late! LOL

I bought a gift for my 98 year old mom with Alzheimer's and treats for all of the other ladies in her board & care home. Several of the daughters met there at lunchtime today and "made memories" for the ladies -- even if they won't remember it after we've gone home!

Favorite romantic movie -- Love Actually

Favorite romantic book is hard because I read and love so many -- but the most recent one I totally enjoyed is by the author, Peggy Somers, and is called Gianna. It is about life and love's ups and downs, and has some very steamy sex, too.

My husband and I have been married nearly 24 years, so we do a practical Valentine's day -- get cards and then buy something we need for the house we pick out together. We believe in making every day Valentine's day for each other. That's probably why we've been so happy together for this long!

Happy Day of Love,
Linda

Valentine's Day is not really a biggie for me. I keep remembering elementary school, when all the other kids' desks overflowed with valentines and I usually got about three--two anonymous ones of the mean-and-nasty variety and one from the teacher.

No Valentine of my own, past or present. Maybe I'll treat the cats to Sheba duck & chicken dinner.

Favorite romantic movies: GHOST and the unfairly-overlooked IMPROMPTU, with Judy Davis and Hugh Grant as Georges Sand and Chopin. She falls in love with him before she ever sets eyes on him, just hearing him playing his music from behind a closed door. Very witty as well as romantic.

Books--I think J.D. Robb's IN DEATH series, with the ongoing relationship of Eve Dallas and Roarke going on for 20+ books so far, and the characters still growing and developing.

It seems appropriate to pay a bit of homage, today, to one of the greats...

RICHMOND, Va. - Novelist Phyllis A. Whitney, whose romantic suspense tales sold millions of copies and earned her top accolades from the Mystery Writers of America, has died. She was 104.

Whitney died last Friday in a Charlottesville hospital, not far from her home in Nelson County, her son-in-law, Ed Pearson, said Thursday.

Whitney wrote more than 75 books, including three textbooks, and had about a hundred short stories published since the 1940s.

Sorry to post again, but Phyllis Whitney was truly a writer I remember with great fondness. If you click the link and read the rest of the story, I think it will remind all, in some ways, of our own Quills -- someone who tells a good tale, and writes because that is who she is...

I had to work late and my husband and I had McDonalds for dinner. lol No time to go out or cook today. We don't usually celebrate or exchange gifts. My most romantic date was when my husband proposed to me on this day 23 years ago. Hmmm...that sounds bad, doesn't it? Like I never had any other romantic dates. lol Let's just say that was the most memorable romantic one.

I have a ton of favorite movies and books. Two of the movies that I watch often are Pride and Prejudice and Dangerous Beauty.

Guess, I have to eat my words, cause a lovely bunch of tulips arrived for me this afternoon from him.

Fave Romantic book- Scarlet Pimpernel, ANy of the Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas, and an older book by Jayne Ann Krentz. the name escapes me, but the main character was Oliver Raine. I love that quiet alpha-male type.
Fave Movie- Clueless, Emma,

A woman stopped by unannounced at her son's house.

She knocked on the door then immediately walked in. She was shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked.

Soft music was playing, and the aroma of perfume filled the room.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"I'm waiting for hubby to come home from work." The daughter-in-law answered.

"But you're naked!" the mother-in-law exclaimed.

"This is my love dress," the daughter-in-law explained.

"Love dress? But you're naked!"

"He loves me to wear this dress" she explained. "Every time he sees me in this dress, he instantly becomes romantic and ravages me for hours.

The mother-in-law left. When she got home she undressed, showered, put on her best perfume, dimmed the lights, put on a romantic CD, and lay on the couch waiting for her husband to arrive.

Finally, her husband came home. He walked in and saw her lying there so provocatively.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"This is my love dress," she whispered, sensually.

"Needs ironing,” he said, "What's for dinner?".

I make a point of buying my mother a small bottle of her favorite perfume, a small box of 'Turtles', and the mushiest card (from a kid) I can find...delivered in person on Valentine's Day.

She never asks for much and gives everything she has to those she loves...and sometimes to those she meets for the first time.

Every day she proves that a strong woman can remain feminine and a lady. She smiles through twists and turns in her life when others might rant and wail. She is always supportive, even when we kids KNEW she should be saying 'are you out of your ever-loving mind?' She has always been a guiding force, a light shining in the darkness, no matter what path of life we chose to walk...

A mother's love is truely a gift we should cherish above all else.

For what can we ever give in return that would hold as much value?

*grateful each day to know she is loved...no matter how rotten she has been*
