Elizabeth G. welcomes Shirley Jump and "friend."

The Three-Pound Queen

On "20/20" this week, they did a whole episode about a year in the life of the royal family, with a focus on the Queen and the princes. Britain may have their royals, but I have a little queen of my own.

And she only weighs three pounds.

Don’t let her size fool you. Sophie has only been in residence at the Jump household for a few days, but she’s already ruling the roost. She’s got all of us under her furry thumb (or what passes for a thumb) and has every other mammal deferring to her.

This is her posing in what I jokingly call her Playboy pictorial, with her propped up all sexy on a blanket and pillows. And yes, I have gone a little Paris Hilton with her and bought her some outfits and more hair bows than my daughter has ;-).

This queen is a Havanese, a type of Bichon, native to Cuba. It’s the only breed native to that country, and was first owned outside that country by Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens. She’ll only get a few pounds heavier (about 7 to 9 pounds total) and a few inches taller. She’s very bright (she already knows how to give kisses, how to sit and come when called). Her potty training is going quite well, and her chewing is kept pretty much under control with a few Nylabones and a stuffed Kong.

She’s yet to realize her queenly status. Everyone who sees her oohs and ahhs and just plain out adores her, but Sophie has yet to let it go to her head. Once she does, I just know I’m going to have a spoiled princess on my hands. Of course, I’m the one doing a lot of that spoiling, so I’ll have only myself to blame ;-).

Perhaps I’ll give "20/20" a call and see if they want to do a Day in the Life episode. Sophie’s got quite the job, keeping our other two dogs and cat in line, then napping every couple of hours. It’s an exhausting life…but she’s putting all three pounds into the effort. :-)

Sophie tells me that she wants to give the readers of RWQ a little treat, too, to celebrate her arrival in our house. She says she’ll put her pawprint on one lucky commenter to receive a copy of REALLY SOMETHING, my latest romantic comedy (still available in stores!).

And if you have a chance, be sure to check out the Wedding Planners blog (which will give you a preview of the rest of the books in the Wedding Planners series) and "Hold the Date," my Online Read at eHarlequin, which introduces both the series (debuting with SWEETHEART LOST AND FOUND in April) and the characters from The Wedding Belles!

Woof!

Oh, can it really be that I'm the first to comment today? I usually get to tag on at the end of the week.

Nice to see you here, Shirley, and Princess Sophie is definitely a winner. Maybe she can make me one too.

Seriously, your books are a lot of fun and I'd love to have another one.

Bichon sounds like a French breed and I wonder how they ended up in Cuba. Were they crossbred there? But then, I really don't know all that much about dogs, or animals for that matter.

Thanks for the introduction to Sophie and to some more of your books.

Hi Shirley, Sophie is so adorabe. We have always been cat people until last year when we took in an abused Pom mix and she is like our baby now. We also have gotten her a lot of outfits. I can imagine the attention Sophie gets because she is so tiny and cute.

Hi Shirley,

Sophie is adorable!! Photogenic too. Glad to hear all the attention she's getting hasn't gone to her head. :-) She's one lucky pup to reign in your lively household.

I already have a copy of Really Something and loved it! The winner is in for a treat!

Oh, she's adorable!!! I love dogs, all dogs, from mutts to special breeds. Most of all, I love my own little fur babies. ;-)

Shirley, what a GREAT title! "Really Something." I don't think I've ever seen it before, when usually our titles are all so recycled. Great cover!

Thanks for visiting with us today.
Hugs to that little precious put and the rest of the Jump family.

What an absolute gem! There is just something incredibly special about dogs... of all kinds... but puppies are just too adorable for words! I hope you and Sophie have many, many years of spoiling each other!

That will go both ways, you know!

Thanks, all, for the good wishes on Sophie! She had her first bath today (she had an accident in her crate, so she had to start her day with some lavender shampooing :-). She did so good, once she got used to the water, literally stood right under the faucet to get rinsed. Now to find a way to get some work done when I'm spending half my day in the backyard, LOL.

Hiya Shirley! Nice to "have" you and Sophie visit! Love, LOVE your "food" series of stories!

Your Sophie should meet my Juno. He fancies himself the Alpha in our home and spends his time thinking very long, serious dog thoughts. He's a low-energy Siberian Husky that's decided that napping is the better part of valor ;-)

Again, glad to "have" you!

When my first Yorkie was young my friends chidded me for letting such a small dog, 2 pounds, go out without a coat or sweater. About that time I ruined a wool sweater by getting it mixed up with the regular laundry. Before I threw it away I cut one sleeve off at an angle and opened the seam to the cuff. I slipped this new puppy garment over Winston's head and it was a perfect fit. Winston spent the next 15 minutes doing everything but turning himself inside out until the sweater was off. After the sweater was off Winston gave me this look like "I can't believe what you tried to do to me". That was my last attempt at dressing a dog.

Sophie is a real cutie pie! I've never tried to dress my dogs. They are definitely not pocket pets. ;) Good luck with training.

LOL about your husky, Deb! Sounds like my Golden!

And love the story, anonymous, about the doggie sweater! Sophie's been a peach about her little pink plaid coat. She doesn't like the raincoat, but it's a bit big for her yet. The other one fits better and she likes it a lot. I think I'll go back to that same store and get a couple more things.

Thanks for having me back, Elizabeth! I love being at RWQ!

And thanks for the congrats, Crystal!

I used to think pet outfits were silly, but I've since had a change of heart. We've been pet-sitting my grandma's poodles (one toy, one standard) for the past three months, both boys. When they arrived, they both had bandannas around their necks (courtesy of the vet). The first thing I did was cut those things off.

Then the snow came. I didn't want the little poodle (not as little as Sophie - he's 18 lbs) to get cold when he went outside, so I dug out an old poodle sweater we just happened to have. As soon as I slipped that sweater on him, I couldn't resist him. He looked so darn cute! Now when he's not wearing it, he looks so naked and vulnerable. The last time I went shopping, I just had to check out the pet outfit section. I didn't buy any (they were too expensive for my budget), but I was honestly tempted.

I tried to put a stocking cap on the standard poodle, but he would have none of it. It was off within seconds. (The scarf took him a bit more time.)

It's going to be hard to let my grandma take them back when she returns in a couple of weeks. A person falls in love with them so quickly.

Shirley,

Forgot to mention that you might, kinda, sorta wanna get Sophie her own page on Dogster.com. I hear that it's all the rage and, hey, she can "see" all her queenly subjects ;-)

Juno happens to have his own because his long doggy thoughts demanded it.

Molly -- I loved your story! I took Sophie down to get the mail today and got her coat on because we had some snow. Too cold for her to go out all bare-fur ;-).

Maureen--you're right, she is work, but she's been pretty easy. My big dogs were a lot more work. Or maybe it's the cute factor that makes her easier to take!

Deb--OMG! That is too funny! I checked out Juno's page--what a gorgeous dog! If I got a Dogster page for Sophie, I'd be on there all the time :-).

Ladytink, you're right! She is too cute not to be spoiled ;-)

Oh, and ranurgis asked about the breed. There's more info here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/havanese/history.cfm

Basically, they think they got the Bichons originally through trade, and then the Havanese developed from that, adapting to the hot climate.

You couldn't help but spoil Sophie, she's cute as a button!!

My dog Jess (a kelpie cross), she's 12 now, has been spoilt rotten since she was a pup. Luckily it hasn't gone to her head yet.

I'll have to check out your book 'Really Something', sound like it will be a fun read.

She is definitely queen material! I have a Schnorkie (miniature Schnauzer/Yorkie mix who looks a little like Toto) who rules my roost and Grandma's, too, when she visits. I haven't really gotten into the dressing because she rips stuff off as soon as it goes on, but she does have this one really cute "pearl" necklace with a pink bow that I make her wear when we visit. Thanks for sharing her picture. I think my queen needs a playmate to boss...

She’s definitely a cutie, but then, all puppies are. It’s a rule, or something. I’d be terrified to have such a small dog, I’d be afraid I’d step on it and squish it! So I prefer the large to giant economy sizes - which doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy other peoples’ ittybitty babies.

How can you possibly leave her alone long enough to write anything?!

We love all dogs, too. Your new one is sure a Q-T. Those little ones are smart and will end up running the house..LOL
I am looking forward to reading "Really Something"

What a little cutie. My oldest daughter just adopted two male pups, Boston Terrier and Chihuahua mix. So I guess that makes me a Fur-Grandma. I think. In any case, they are adorable. And your new book series sounds very cool.

I love your books Shirley! You are a very talented and classic writer!

Hi Shirley, and welcome!

Don't let her see you, but take a sly peek at Sophie. Bet she's giving you a sly and knowing stare. Of course she already knows she's queen--these creatures are born knowing their exhalted places in the world . . .

Love Havanese--they are so smart and well-natured.

Cheers, Stella

Thanks for the info on the breed, Shirley. Sophie really is so adorable.

My sister's m-i-l has 4 Chihuahuas. One is full-grown and weighs only 3 pounds tops. She had two litters of puppies. When they saw the problems she had with the birthing, they stopped trying to breed her because the second time almost killed her. Each of the other dogs weighs 5 pounds or more.
