    A Case of Addiction

    To books, of course!

Just got back from beautiful Kauai where the sun was warm, the sand was warm, the sea was warm, and I think I broke my own record for hanging out under a ceiling fan and reading.

We stayed in a bungalow that belongs to Jill Marie Landis and her husband--they live next door. Jill and I got some great story talk done and I wrote some on my new book, but I've got to be honest with all of you--mostly, I read.

BTW, Jill is going to blog for us in June when her next book, HOMECOMING, is released. I've read the story and it's delicious, so eat your hearts out.

Back to those books I couldn't put down. I'm giving you a list of exactly half the titles I devoured:

    Tami Hoag: THE ALIBI MAN

Robert B. Parker: SPARE CHANGE, PERISH TWICE, MELANCHOLY BABY and FAMILY HONOR (All in the Sunny Randal Series)

    Lori Foster: HARD TO HANDLE

Donna Leon: DEATH AT LA FENICE, DRESSED FOR DEATH, QUIETLY IN THEIR SLEEP and DEATH IN A STRANGE COUNTRY (All in the Commissario Guido Brunetti Series)

THE ALIBI MAN (set against a backdrop of Florida polo, big money and bigger crime) is a complete nail-biter and not for the faint of heart. Some of the snappiest dialogue around and delivered at a pace that makes the reader breathless. Every character hops to life.

In Parker's Sunny Randall series, be prepared to wish you had Sunny's resourcefulness--and fearlessness. She is a PI and ex-cop with a fascinating ex-husband.

HARD TO HANDLE? You've probably read it but if not, do it now:)

Guido Benetti turns Venice into a city any reader can know--intimately--without yards of boring description. The man is the consummate policeman, and Italian to the marrow of his bones. Donna Leon spins gripping mysteries with a cast of characters you want to at least hang out with--other than the criminals! Guido's family is hilarious, his boss is a man you have to hate, and his love of life and justice make you cheer for him.

    All the best, Stella
I'm on the hunt for more books to read. More stories from a variety of genres. What have you read lately that really rang your chimes?

    Hiya Stella!

I love Sunny Randall... lol... and Spenser, too! So fun to visit Boston with 'em.

Uhm... I would recommend J.R. Ward's Brotherhood series if you've not tried it yet. John Sanford and Jeffrey Deaver are favorites of mine, too.

I'm so glad you took time to enjoy yourself in Hawaii, Stella. I look forward to hearing from Jill Marie Landis soon.

Oy vey, it's definitely a Monday, huh? Ha! LOL

    Hi Stella and welcome back!
I was away at a convention in Dallas, and I had a marvelous time, but I also managed some reading time.

I finished SIZZLE AND BURN on the plane ride there, and all I can say is... WOW. It's one of those totally amazing books that has this tight, complete, compelling and satisfying romance (really does sizzle and burn, too!) but also has such a bigger plot going on, with good and evil people skilled in paranomal abilities (which all seemed as believable as any other human talent), battling under the radar of "normal folk."

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!
Everything about it. Can't wait to pick up the others in the series.

Kresley Cole was the morning speaker for the Dallas event (I was luncheon speaker) and we each ahd books on the tables for the guests. I picked up her book, A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER and wowzer, now I'm totally hooked into it.

It feels SO good to read again! (And no, I wasn't on a treadmill - shame on me. But I was on a plane!)

Kresley's book is a werewolf/vampire/valkyrie book and it's the most unique thing I've ever read. Just plain fascinating with nary a slow spot anywhere! I've been zipping through the pages.

After that, I have BLUE SMOKE AND MURDER to read (an arc- na na boo boo) and I'll probably read that one while flying to and from the RT convention - if I'm not able to read it before then. I can't wait!

Okay, reading on a plane isn't as exciting as reading in Hawaii, but it's all I can do right now. LOL

    Hugs to all!

    Lori

My Mom is not a "fast reader" she just doesn't devour books. She has found a series and an author that she is reading a book every 3 days (that is huge for her - Normal is usually about 2-3 WEEKS)

It is the Chocolate Series by Joanna Carl.

They are being passed to my neighbor and then to me. I am waiting until I have them all, so I can start at the beginning. I have to do that, I can't read a series out of order.

I waited about a year to read about Fiddler because I didn't have the second book. Finally, went ahead without it, and then when I did get it, I was confused, because I was out of order...

On the stuff I have read - Big Fan of Tami Hoag, the Quills, Linda Howard. Kay Hooper has a great set of Series About a special Unit in the FBI that all the members are psychic in some way. each set is 3 books and there are several sets. I think my other favorite author is Fern Michaels.

For paranormals/fantasy/SF: Michelle Sagara's Chronicles of Elantra (the CAST IN series); Ilona Andrews's MAGIC BITES; Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series (about a shapeshifter/coyote raised by a pack of werewolves) and her wonderful WHEN DEMONS WALK; and of course Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy and its sequels and the Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I also love Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters and Five Hundred Kingdoms series and Linnea Sinclair's space-operas-with-romance, especially FINDERS KEEPERS, GAMES OF COMMAND, and AN ACCIDENTAL GODDESS.

Mysteries: Donna Andrews's hilarious Meg Langslow series, beginning with MURDER WITH PEACOCKS; Laurie R. King's books about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, beginning with THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE; Nancy Atherton's cozis-with-ghost Aunt Dimity series; and of course anything by Robb/Roberts you can get your hands on.

I've read one of Robert Parker's books recently...the Jesse Stone series..saw a version on Lifetime TV and got interested in the series.

Hard to Handle is definitely NOT hard to handle..excellent book, are all of Lori's books.

Lindsey Davis is a new writer for me...her Marcus Didius Falco mysteries are great...set in the 70s AD in Rome.

I'm only reading nonfiction right now, but my son recently recommended Wilbur Smith's books to me, especially RIVER GOD. (Sadly, while I'd love to read Smith's ancient Egyptian series, I won't as long as I'm writing my own.)

Great to have you back from Hawaii, Stella!

    Happy Monday all!

Hamilton's 2 series, Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, and Meridith Gentry Faerie Princess. Hi Stella! You went to Hawaii?! *Sigh* I'm a jealous gal.

I can't imagine I'd be able to read or write very much if I were there...but you never know! I do love working vacations.

Thanks for the scoop on the books. I've already got Lori's book!

I've been waiting for HARD TO HANDLE since it came out. But for some strange reason, though our city library ordered 14 copies for its branches, they are still not in cataloging. I wonder if the books sold out before they came to "our" order.

I just realized that I neglected to put a hold on SIZZLE AND BURN! To my horror there were 120 holds on the book and I was sure I'd have to wait until summer to get a copy. But, I noticed that there were also some large print copies on order--and, yay, there wasn't a single hold on those! So I'll be the first to get one of them when they arrive.

As for my reading, there's nothing terribly exciting. I'm trying to catch up on some of my long-neglected books of long ago. Right now I'm finally reading CHARADE (1994) by Sandra Brown. It's still one of her books that has a little more romance to balance the suspense. I recently read some of her old series romances and thoroughly enjoyed them. I like some of her suspense too, just not as much.

Last week I read THE SECRET BETWEEN US by Barbara Delinsky, a tale of what havoc a small lie of omission to shield one's daughter can cause. You can probably see that a lot of my favorite authors were writing back in the 1980s already, even if it was under different names. One of these days I'll have to catch up on Stella's and Susan's books, at least enough to read one series as I'm reading Lori's extreme fighters. I sort of got in on the ground floor with those. And I'm keeping abreast of Jayne's, EL's and EG's current releases. I have older books by each still to read.

One of the next books for me to read will be THE SEDUCTION OF THE CRIMSON ROSE by Lauren Willig. It's book 4 in her contemporary and historical series about a modern Harvard researcher writing about spies in Napoleonic times. The books are a lot of fun and quite enjoyable. I got interested in those because the second book was about the Black Tulip. One of the French books by Alexandre Dumas, pere that I read was also about the Black Tulip but, as it turned out, at a different time. Still, they are well worth reading.

Hi Quill authors :) Lots of recommendations here. I'm taking notes! I need to get reads and have them ready for after surgery cuz I'm not going to be able to get around after it and just have them ready at my bed side! My husband hasn't been receptive to picking up books in the romance section for me, LOL. I'm reading Amanda Quick's SECOND SIGHT but didn't realize that in a way WHITE LIES is first because it was written first, so plan to get that! I so love her historical romances. I have HOT TO HANDLE ready to read! I love my contemporary and romance suspense reads to be hot :)

I'm waiting for Jeaninne (sp?) Frost's second book. I'd recommend her first one, HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE. It was fabulous! I love Urban Fantasy now so thanks for all those recommendations. And historical romances have always been dearly a favorite of mine! I love to read them all and any! They just give me a wonderful comfort!

I love historical mysteries and my favorites are Victoria Thompson's gaslight series. I really need to get her last couple. I otherwise don't read mysteries, but these historical ones, I get hooked on! Another that I'm all caught up on and love is Ashley Gardner's (Jennifer Ashley) historical mysteries. I plan some time soon to find more in this theme.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. I'm glad I stopped by here. Just too long since I have! Cathie

I loved The Alibi Man--I liked the one before it with the same protagonist as well--the ex\narc cop who grew up in the horse world. Fascinating. I really like the Spenser books, but don't enjoy the Jesse Stone ones as much.

About 20 years after I first read it, I'm rereading a book that some of you might be familiar with: SWEET STARFIRE by an author named Jayne Ann Krentz.

I first heard about it during a visit to the Detroit area from my home in southwestern Ontario. It was also the first time I read a Romantic Times Magazine, in which SS received one of the elusive 5-star ratings--it may have been the first. The woman where I got the RT newspaper said to me, "This is definitely taking romance too far." I disagreed after I read it.

I loved the book and always remembered that part of it was set in a jungle on some distant planet. I'm now finding it just as enthralling as I did then.

    Thanks, Jayne.
