Elizabeth G: Two Thumbs Up

For a number of reasons, I haven't been out to the movies in months and months. And, as you may recall, I LOVE going to the movies. So I've been renting or watching on PPV a few of the films I missed in the movie theatres. Gotta tell you, folks, I'm sure glad I didn't pay full price to see most of them.

Until several weeks ago, when I rented AUGUST RUSH. The movie's tag line is: "The music is everywhere. All you have to do is listen." It's also described as "a drama with fairy tale elements, where an orphaned musical prodigy uses his gift as a clue to finding his birth parents."

AUGUST RUSH stars Freddie Highmore, an incredibly talented young English actor, Keri Russell, mostly famous for being Felicity on the TV show of the same name, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, one of my personal favorites who does his own singing in the film, Academy-award winner Terence Howard, and Robin Williams in a non-comedic role that is one of his recent best.

What makes this film special?

First and foremost, the music. I love the cello. I love the guitar. The music performed in the movie, whether classical or rock, is wonderful!

Second, Freddie Highmore. Few child actors don't appear to be acting. He's amazing. He's also the reason the film works so beautifully. (Freddie is no novice. He's been in a lot of movies. I saw him in "Neverland," and "A Good Year," and he was excellent in both.)

Last, but not least, there is a romance, of course. And magic. And mystery. And an element of serendipity.

I guess you can tell: I LOVE this movie. I now own it on DVD thanks to my husband who surprised me with a copy after I kept talking about it.

So Inquiring Minds want to know two things on this beautiful spring day: Have any of you seen AUGUST RUSH? Do you have a wonderful film to recommend that's available on pay-per-view or rental?

Happy Spring!
EG

I really liked this movie also because of the love story and the music. You did leave out Jonathan though-he is awfully cute.

I also enjoyed the lack of blood and violence. I know those other movies are escapism but I get nightmares.

I saw August Rush with my father and 25 yr old sister. At the end of the movie I look over and my sister is bawling. When I asked her what was wrong, she whispered in a very reverent voice "this is why fiction is made."

I highly recommend Juno to anyone with a sense of humor.

I haven't seen August Rush, yet, though I'm planning to.

As for a movie that I'd recommend, please, see Once. I recommend this movie to just about everyone! It is a really wonderful movie with a great soundtrack. It's a very simple story about two people who meet, connect but don't quite connect, and go on with their lives better for having met each other. It was made for almost nothing and shot in a little more than 2 weeks using Dublin musicians for actors (and they are really unbelievably good, as is the editing and cinematography.). The movie's sweet and sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and so much better than I could describe with just a few sentences. The couple in the film won an Oscar for one of their songs from the movie (they wrote and performed it).

I actually won 2 rare cinema tickets for a preview of this film in my city. It's the only time since I've been trying to win at this site that they actually had tickets for here.

Unfortunately, the ISP account I had at the time would not let me open the attachment. By the time I thought of sending it to one of my other accounts, the evening had passed. Grrr.

I've always liked Keri Russell and like you I love stringed instruments; I even played violin myself in my misspent youth.

I still haven't seen the movie since there is no rental closer than 2 buses and long walks away from me. Maybe the library will eventually get it.

Forget about all the war and detective movies. I'm very picky about movies but one I would really like to see is the one about Edith Piaf. I've always loved the way she sings French songs and I hear the actress did a good job of playing her. Has anybody seen it? Sorry, the name of both the actress and the movie escape me.

Oops, I've found it. I was sure it was related to one of Piaf's songs: La vie en rose.

I loved this movie. I watched it on my trip to see our middle kidlet on the plane. I watched it both ways because I enjoyed the music so much.

About the only movies I see are on DVD or in transit on long flights. :-(

Hiya EG,

I haven't seen August Rush. The HHP and I have been spending our "TV time" catching up on all of the seasons of The Wire. Awesome series. Which is over. Go figure.

The last movie I saw was No Country for Old Men. Absolutely hated the ending. Other than that, great movie...LOL.

Happy Viewing :-)

I did see August Rush and liked it alot too. The thought that music brings the family together has such promise.

P.S. I Love You should be available on PPV and it is very good.

I haven't see August Rush either, but I'll put in on my list.

Saw Leatherheads and really enjoyed it. I think George Cloony is a wonderfully understated comdedic actor, and the movie was a throwback to the forties style romantic comdedies, which I just really liked. But the soulmate liked it as well, so it wasn't sappy (which I'm not adverse to).

Deb, my son turned us onto the Wire. We're in the midst of season four right now. (on DVD) and my sweet baby boy has season five for us to watch next. LOVE Omar.

Hey EG:
Ummmmmmmmmmmmm...

I'll try to rent August Rush.

I don't usually rent movies but do watch a lot of series on DVD. AbFab is keeping me cackling at the moment and I intend to get more Catherine Tate next.

Sadly, I haven't seen it and won't. Not my cup of tea. Kid Rock has a song out right now, titled, "I'm a Lowlife." I think (other than his references to drug and stuff) that I'd fit. LOL. THe things he mentions as funny, I find hilarious too.
Drama and weepiness and sugary romance? Not so much.
Parents who'd adopt out their kid and then want him back? Not so much.

But I did just see "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and it was beyond hilarious, starting with the in-your-face full-frontal nudity of the main guy, which for whatever reason, made everyone in the audience roar with laughter.

I should have also said that I know I'm a female freak of nature and I'm so glad that most of you WERE able to enjoy such a great movie! If it sounded like I was snarking at you for your choices, I wasn't. I was making fun of my own preferences. ;-)

Hugs!

I will, Tina! I'd read a lot about this movie and saw the couple on the Academy Awards when they won for Best Song. ONCE may already be on our PPV. I'll check it out this weekend.

Ranurgis, I've seen La Vie en Rose with Marion Cotillard. She's magnificent as Edith Piaf and deserved (and won) the Academy Award for Best Actress. You'd never guess she was the same woman who also appeared in A Good Year, another of my favorite films.
~EG

P.S. A Good Year was based on Peter Mayle's book, A Year in Provence.

ann m, I'm with you. I can always rewatch a movie I love, especially if it has great music.

EL: I'm with you, too. Plus, by renting the DVD, you can see the movie in widescreen. I don't like watching good movies on TV knowing both sides of the scene have been chopped off. :-)

Now, see, Deb, that would ruin any movie for me. My movies must have a satisfactory ending. (I prefer a happy ending, too, of course.:-)

Dina, I will definitely watch for P.S. I Love You. I'm a huge Gerard Butler fan!

Susan, I don't know if AUGUST RUSH will be your cup of tea or not. You and I have never really discussed the movies we've loved or hated.:-)

Stella, you will love AUGUST RUSH! There is a whimsy to it that will definitely appeal to you.

Lori, that's what makes the world go round, my friend. We all like different things, including different kinds of movies. :-)

btw, without giving the plot away for those who are interested in watching AUGUST RUSH, rest assured the parents don't give their baby away.

Happy viewing all!

I had to pop in and say how much I LOVE this movie! Saw it recently and couldn't stop thinking about it--and fell TOTALLY in love with the hero/father in the movie. Wow.

Great post!

Me, too, Kay. :-) That would be the 30-year-old Irish actor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Rhys Meyers is also currently starring in The Tudors on Showtime. He plays a young Henry VIII.

I thought it was a very good movie. Dickensian, rather like Oliver Twist. The music was excellent and it was a happy ending. I don't get out much, so I'd like movies to be funny/happy when I make the effort to go. Plus they are so darned expensive! It makes me mad to pay big bucks for a movie and then hate it. KathyK

You can say that again, Dina! :) I think I've seen every film Gerard Butler has been in (including "Dracula 2000," and I NEVER watch vampire movies), with the exception of "The 300." Frankly the violence in that film put me off.
