Name that dog, that dog, and that cat...

But first, don't forget our absolutely, humongous, splendiferous, staggeringly beneficent, overwhelmingly bounteous, outrageously munificent, unstintingly sumptuous. . . (half a mo', out of breath) MOTHER'S DAY CONTEST! Get your entries in by Mother's Day, then we'll make a random drawing for a winner. You lucky people!

    -~~~-

    Fluffy won't do it.

    Rover is out.

For my love story--A KNOTTY TAIL--in which two dogs and a cat play major supportive roles, I need just the right names for my four-footed reprobates.

Two runts from a litter of Labradoodles, a boy and a girl, and a very svelte tabby lady of indeterminate but obviously upper crust beginnings (she told me so) are unwilling conspirators in A KNOTTY TAIL.

Devious, dastardly and downright cunning, this trio works to manipulate another pair of natural enemies: The Male and The Female.

You'll have to wait for TAILS OF LOVE to find out more of the story. Berkley and Lori Foster, with a little help from a few others including moi, are putting this anthology together to aid animal adoption.

You can help out by coming up with some fabulous names. Any ideas?

    Cheers, Stella

    Hiya Stella!

Whatta great treat... I'll throw some names out there and you can either laugh hysterically or consider one of them...LOL.

    Labradoodle Puppies
    Delwayn (proud) & Allegra (quick/lively)
    Costa & Lot (Ha!)
Ezra & Ophelia (both mean help)
    Ricky & Lucy (Ricardo/Ball)
    Aidan & Nadia (anagrams)
    Spencer & Kate (Tracy/Hepburn)
    Lux & Luz (light)

    Tabby Kitty:
    Leandra (lioness-like)
    Hypatia (supreme)
    Alexie (defender...ha!)
    Sayge (wisdom)
    Willow (slender/slim)

Animal adoption and rescue is a much underfunded cause...I'm so glad several of you are helping, too!

Good luck, Stella! Can't wait to see the finished anthology!

    Hi Stella,

This has been fun. My suggestions are:

For the male dog Alexander (greek name meaning defender).

For the female dog Cara (gaelic meaning friend)

I thought these names were appropriate as they are some of the qualities we associate with mans best friend.

For the cat I'm torn between Sarina (hebrew for princess) and Arista (greek meaning magnificent).

The book sounds geat, I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

I love Tabitha for the cat,, and Sadie is good, too. But if you'd like another Celtic suggestion for any reason, Eleri is a pleasant Welsh female name. (Heavy stress on the middle syllable - e-LERR-y).

I like dignified people-names for animals, and we must remember that those enchantingly fluffy pups will grow up to be medium-size dogs, so unduly cute names are not suitable. I also feel that each animal must be individually named, even if they are siblings: I am not too keen on names that depend on each other for their effect, like Bubble and Squeak or Thunder and Lightning. Every animal, like every person, is unique. :-)

Hope you find something in all the suggestions you have garnered - and I shall look forward to the book!

Stella, I am SO thrilled that you're taking part in the antho for the animal shelter! Your name is going to bring so much to the project.
    THANK YOU.
I don't have any names to lend. I still haven't picked out any for my own story.
But I do have an amusing animal tale to share. :-)

I know you’ve probably already heard the story of how Allen and I painstakingly captured our feral cats (ours because they claim our porch) and got them all fixed, got their shots and turned them loose again. We buy them outdoor cat food by the truckload (to help with hairballs and worms, etc...) and supply plenty of bedding, but we can’t pick them up.
They won’t let us. We can't even get near enough to pet them - just near enough to put out the food and clean the bedding on occasion.
They’re truly feral and catching them wasn’t easy!

But we didn’t want 6 cats to turn into a 100, so we caught them and got them fixed.

Well, those 6 cats found a friend. An adorable little black kitten with one brown paw.

Yesterday, that “kitten” had kittens on my porch!

I didn’t even know that tiny thing was preggers!

So now we need to try to get close enough to her to keep all the kittens and get HER and the kittens fixed, when the kittens are old enough.

Such is life on the Foster porch.

Yesterday I couldn't tell how many kittens she had, because a raccoon had curled up in one of the beds next to the carrier the cat is using.
All you could see was one small raccoon foot and tail.

Allen tried nudging that bed, to see if the raccoon would wake up and leave. Instead, he just pulled in his foot and ignored us.

Finally, last night around 6, he came out to eat, potty, look around - and leave. He hasn't been back yet. Thank heavens!

I swear, I feel like I have a menagerie sometimes! But I love animals – thus the work I do for them, so... we’ll figure out how to get the kittens and female mommy cat cared for when the time is right!

Thank you again, Stella! You're the best.

I agree with AgTigress, so I'm going to have fun with my imagination and picture their personalities:

If the cat is truly regal: Reign, although I must say she looks like an Anastasia Regina (which of course the pups would shorten to "Nasty" when provoked).

    The pups:

Well, she looks like a Sadie Anabella to me (I would call her Sadie Belle).

He seems a bit more of a scrapper: He's probably a Thaddeus John, TJ to his friends. Or he might be Timothy James, TJ to his friends and TimmyJim to his sister or to Anastasia...

THANKS Stella -- I sure am having fun with this!!!!!

    Sounds fun (and funny)!

My suggestion for the kitty, would be "Mistress Ariana" or "Madame' Renee'" ( after my daughter or my sister- and oh-so-appropriate if you only knew!).

My thoughts for the puppies are much more mundane, but sutibly picturesque, I think, (being "labradoodles" and all)-- "Puddles" for the girl, and "Splash" for the boy.

BTW: Stella, I was so pleased to meet you at the book signing in Redmond last Saturday. I wasn't quite sure who you were at first when you spoke to me ( presumably taking pity on my semi-lost state)and got Jayne's attention for me.

I'm a little late to the party. But I'd name that cat in the picture Grace or Sophia. She seems to embody both. The pups are harder because you don't want the names too similar, either in the story or in real life. Too hard for both readers and dogs to recognize which one is who. I like to name animals for favorite characters: Harry and Hermione (Harry Potter); Merry and Sam (Lord of the Rings).

Hi Byrd: I've never seen so many great ideas for names. The list I have now is wonderful. I've decided I'll always be able to use names from these answers to name future four-footed characters.

    Cheers, Stella

    Hi Jill:

I enjoyed meeting you on Saturday. Since I am frequently a bit lost, I do notice when someone else looks uncertain. Helping you helped me feel useful:)

Thanks for more names for my list.

    Cheers, Stella

I've always liked the name Max for a dog. That's what my brother and sister-in-law named their first one. Their second is a she and is named Hope.

Curiously enough, Max was my grandfather's name, one uncle's name, and from them, my brother's second name. Hope, on the other hand, began as the dog's name. When my nephew had his daughter, she became Emma Hope.

Names seem to migrate in our family, though I can't say that the dog was named for a person or that Emma Hope was named after the dog. Maybe it was just a love of the names in our family. LOL

Names have been repeated many times in my family, too--male names. On my father's side, the first son was always William.

I like Max. That's a name I've used in books before.

I personally am fond of the names of two of my dogs - Keevah (means precious in Gaelic) and Corey (his real name is Rich's Hurricane Corey. NEVER name a dog after a hurricane, unless you want to live with the aftermath!). For a cat, I've always favored the name Pye (short for Pyewacket from the movie Bell, Book, and Candle).
