    Books, books, books, books, books

Lets talk books. I have no blogging chops for anything else today, but then we're all here because we're readers, right? So let me start the discussion by talking about some of the books I've read and enjoyed lately. Maybe I can turn you on to some new authors or titles. Perhaps you can do the same for me.

Because most of the stuff I've read recently has been recommended to me by other readers. I've blown through several books by my favorite authors, of course. But, man I love discovering new to me authors. And joy, joy, joy: my brainstorming partner, Caroline Cross, has turned me on to two separate series written by writers I'd never read before. She brought me Books One and Two in one of the series and Book One in the other, and I became a believer in both.

I first took note of J.R. Ward some time ago while I was checking the Bookscan sales list. This author I'd never heard of was simply shooting up the charts. I saw that she wrote a vampire series, however, and thought, "Like we need more of those." Then Caro brought me the first two and, folks, they knocked my socks off. Ward's built an interesting world of caste systems and warriors and vampires who get their sustanance from other vampires rather than humans. I'm only three books in, but what I've read so far is simply fascinating. It has romance and sex and danger and that wonderful "something" that keeps us turning those pages as fast as we can.

The other series she got me started on was Stephanie Myers teen angst/vampire/werewolf saga. Book One, Twilight, was the author's first book, period, and it was darn near perfect. (Except that we in the Pacific NW do not call our highways/ freeways "The" whatever number. We simply say I-5 or 101. But that's a nitpick) The main vamps in this book are a cobbled together family trying to exist without drinking human blood. They can also go out in the daylight but have taken up residence in Forks, Washington because it has the most rainfall of anyplace in America. Which is helpful as they become very conspicuous in sunlight. (I won't give away why)

Then my sweet baby boy brought me the uniquest book--one he picked up in a section of Barnes and Noble that I probably never even would have checked out. This one's called Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow. It's a book written in free verse about weredogs in L.A.

I know! It seems to be all paranormal all the time with me these days. What can I say; sometimes it just turns out that way. I knew I had to write an actual review for this one for WritersAreReaders.com before I even finished the thing, because I was simply stunned by the sheer level of enjoyment it gave me. Sharp Teeth is funny and hard-edged and wicked-sharp. It's sometimes grim yet often lyrical. And it just plain kept me rivited. To get a more indepth idea of its plot go to http://www.writersarereaders.com/andersenbarlowsharpteeth.html

I'm reading yet another fabulous book, but I'm going to save this one for next Friday's post as I've invited its author to be our feature blogger. Meanwhile, what have you read lately that's blown you away? If there is one thing I am always up, it's hearing about wonderful, entertaining books.

I get most of my new authors from the wonderful writers here and from other blog sites. I figure if I love what you write, I'll probably enjoy what you read as well!

I just finished the first three Yasmine Galenorn novels, based upon Lori Foster's recommendation and my daughter has devoured Stephanie Meyers after being introduced by a friend.

I've just finished reading "The Third Circle," so I'm into Quills authors myself. I loved it and can hardly wait for the next installments to arrive. Next up on the Krentz et al. front is the next Jayne Castle.

When Caroline Cross's name came up, so did my antennae. Did she write some Silhouette romances? I've read two of them.

Another book I've really enjoyed lately is "Maidensong" by Diana Groe. Historical novels are still my favorites. This takes place in Scandinavia and Byzantium during the 6th C. A.D., at least the mention of the powerful Empress Theodora of Byzantium places it during that time. The story was full of adventure, intrigue and, of course, romance. Definitely my type of book set in an era that is very unusual in the 2000s.

Another author who combines both the contemporary and historical with lots of fun, is Lauren Willig. I've read 4 books by her now and enjoyed each one. The premise is that a history student is writing her thesis about "flower" spies like the Scarlet Pimpernel during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. Her research leads her to the descendant of one of them. I found the latest one, "The Seduction of the Crimson Rose" especially well done because it's about two characters that were not sympathetic in the two previous books. When I thought that these two characters were going to be the main protagonists, I was almost ready to stop reading. However, the author breathes life into the two and gives us a very good romantic adventure, as well as advancing the romance between the two contemporary characters. It almost felt as if this might be the conclusion to the series, but I hope it isn't.

    G'morning Susan!

I love J.R. Wards series... it's wonderful... there's another coming out soon if I remember correctly.

I also recently read "Damien" by Jacquelyn Frank and that's the latest in another series that's incredible... it's the "Nightwalker" series. I'm currently barreling through our own EL's Blue Smoke & Murder, which is... rowwwwwrrr and wow!

I love "series" kinds of stories because it's like visiting with old friends... for me, anyway.

Happy Friday!... from NE Ohio, where it's gonna be 90F today with 75% humidity...lolol

I finished Blood Noir by Laurell K Hamilton (book 16?) in the Anita Blake series. Am reading the newest J R Ward - Lover Enshrined and impatiently waiting for Walk on the Wild Side (book 5?) by Christine Warren.

LOL, most of my reading is paranormal as you can probably tell. Adding Toby's name to list of titles to check out.

I love both of those series. In the fall, when I broke my foot, I couldn't get out to the bookstore. Some of my advanced students kept telling me I had to read Twilight so I ordered it. Read it. And promptly ordered the next two. I now have the fourth on pre-order. Meyer does a great job in creating characters and she has some interesting narrative twists (the second book has a chunk that, in its simplicity, blew me away).

I love JR Ward as well. I am resisting picking up Lover Enshrined because I need to mark and get my English exams finished this weekend... and having that book will keep both of those from being accomplished.

Recently, though, I have also gotten into Lara Adrian and Kresly Cole. Both are well written paranormals.

Betsy, you'll have to check out your daughter's copy of Twilight. It really does rock!

Rangurgis, yes, Caroline Cross writes Silhouette Desires and she is sooo good! Those Lauren Willig books you mentioned sound really interesting--I'll have to give them a look-see.

G'mornin Deb! I can't even imagine your weather. We're having October in June here. It's just been a very weird weather year.

Hey, Lisa. I have checked out Barlow's Sharp Teeth website. Verra cool!

Elizabeth, I love having a TBR pile! I always get a little shaky when it gets too low.

Tammy and Brandy, I haven't read Christine Warren. I'll have to check her out! Haven't read Blood Noir, either, but I do have Harlequin in my TBR

Jayne, I think you'll enjoy Sharp Teeth. The man has a way with words that made me downright envious at times!

Lori, I'm only up to Book four in the Ward series. In fact that's next in my pile. I LOVE having these back ups. I've been going every other between her series and Myers' series.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but I'm just starting Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books. I'm having trouble finding them in order, so I'm taking them as I can get them. I just finished Dark Side of the Moon last night, and I loved it!

I also re-read With Nine You Get Vanyr by Teri Smith and JeanMarie Ward. It's a great read and TONS of fun if you've ever done fan-cons. Despite Teri's untimely passing almost two years ago, I know JM is working on the second one right now.

I love discovering new and new-to-me authors. My cyberfriends and author friends at various boards have turned me on to some terrific authors.

A lot of the books I've read this year have received a 9 on my personal 1-10 rating scale but I've only awarded 10 to a few. They are:

Joanna Bourne - The Spymaster's Lady

    Lisa Kleypas - Blue-Eyed Devil

Meredith Duran - The Duke of Shadows

Roxanne St. Claire - First You Run

Christina Dodd - Into the Shadow (this one releases July 1 and is AWESOME!)
