Jayne Ponders the Allure of a Series

There is something about a series. When I go into a bookstore nothing delights me more than finding a new book in one of my favorite series. We happen to be in Hawaii at the moment and for lanai reading I brought along the newest volume in Simon R. Green's Eddie Drood series: DAEMONS ARE FOREVER. Green does a fabulous job with clever, grandly heroic Urban Fantasy. I also picked up Janet Evanovich's FEARLESS FOURTEEN, the hilarious new Stephanie Plum book.

I'm addicted to a lot of series and luckily we here at RWQ have plenty to offer. There's LORI FOSTER's SBC FIGHTERS, ELIZABETH GUEST'S PHARAOHS RISING, STELLA CAMERON'S BAYOU BOOKS, ELIZABETH LOWELL'S ST KILDA BOOKS, SUSAN ANDERSEN'S LINKED STORIES and my own ARCANE SOCIETY novels.

In addition I follow all three of Robert B. Parker's series (Jesse Stone, Spencer and what's her name, oh, yeah, Sunny Randall). I can't wait for the newest Gabriel Allon book from Daniel Silva and the latest John Rain story from Barry Eisler. The list goes on.

What is it about a series that compels us? Certainly the pleasures of returning again and again to familiar fictional landscapes starts in childhood. I'm thinking of all those Walter Farley horse stories, the Little House on the Prairie books and Nancy Drew, among others, not to mention comic books. And then there's Harry Potter and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga series.

There are series books available in most if not all of the genres: Heck, mystery and thriller writers build entire careers around series characters. The tradition goes way back. Think: Sherlock Holmes and James Bond. Series are huge in romance and the paranormal. They are the backbone of science fiction. They are wildly popular in the new generation of romantic erotica. Can anyone say Kate Douglas and Chanku?

There are a few things that can instantly turn me off a series forever and ever. I have standards. I stopped reading one mystery writer when his screw-up hero allowed his own little adopted daughter to get killed in one of the books. When another mystery writer made a big deal about the homicide victim in the story being a pathetic loser because she read romance novels I closed the book without bothering to finish it. I did not throw the book across the room. I put it directly into the garbage and dumped it down the trash chute. The odd thing was that one of the reasons I had enjoyed that particular series up until that point was because of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine!

Most of the people I know who read fiction for pleasure follow the events and characters in one or more unique "worlds" or series. As a lover of connected titles, I'm always interested in discovering new series.

    Got any recommendations?

    Sincerely,
    Jayne

Am I really going to be the first to post again today? Nope, missed it with my long entry.

I love series too, but it can be very frustrating when you start reading in the middle of a series and then can't find the first few books. I have most of two series by Brenda Jackson (she writes about the Madaris and Westmoreland families), but can't find the first two books in one of them. Here I thought that the availability of e-books would aid us but unfortunately, even those are no longer available except in a 6-book package.

I know you write Regency and books but don't know if you've read any of Tracy Grant's series about English diplomat Charles Fraser and his wife French wife Melanie. The first two books are "Daughter of the Game"(reprinted as "Secrets of a Lady") and "Beneath a Silent Moon."

I've also enjoyed, besides most of the ones you've listed (there are a few by Quills that I haven't yet read, not "not enjoyed") the Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig. She keeps me on my toes with her academic references. LOL

I think series are great because they tend to answer our desire to know what happens next to beloved characters as well as keeping us in a familiar world. The two things that you mentioned as putting you off a series, would do the same for me. It's different when you get to a series by Iris Johansen about Eve Duncan, who tries to solve her daughter's murder during the course of a series. I know I couldn't stand any sad or gruesome ending for any character I've come to care even a little about.

    Hello Jayne-
I hope you're having a wonderful time in Hawaii! You certainly a break with three books coming out (I can't wait!).
I had an addiction to Martha Grimes and her Inspector Jury mysteries but the character stopped developing and I began to cringe with some of her later books. I'm beginning to feel that way with the Stephanie Plum novels. Colin Dexter was much more successful with his Inspector Morse series and Faye Kellerman really allowed her characters of Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus to evolve.

GREAT post, Jayne! Thanks for the mention. LOL.
Besides the series on here that you mentioned, I'm totally hooked on Kresley Cole's "Immortals After Dark" series. She's an incredibly talented author that can have you wincing one minute, and laughing out loud the next. The books are rich with characters, each so individual that I don't get them mixed up no matter how many she throws at me. ;-)
I'm a series junky. I like to write them, I like to read them.

    Happy Monday everyone!

You might enjoy Lilith Saintcrow's Dante Valentine series. I certainly did :). And then there's James Rollins' Sigma series - just about the best adventure fiction available today.

    Hello Jayne,

I didn't realise how many series I have read and enjoyed!
Stef Ann Holm-Harmony Series, Geralyn Dawson-Bad Luck series, Mary Balogh - Simply & Slightly series, Susan Wiggs-Lakeshore Chronicles, Lisa Kleypas-Wallflower series, Susan Enoch with Samantha Jellicoe and hunky Rick Addison & any of Christina Dodd's series. I have only just started the Stephanie Plum series, as has someone else at my library. I am sometimes left waiting until the next installment is returned which just keeps me in suspense! :)

I like the glimpse of a character the author teases us with (is this on purpose?) and finding what makes him/her tick in a later story. I know there is a risk that a character may not live up to my imagination but i'll take that chance. Also, some characters are very likeable and so the story is enjoyable and a lot of fun.

I can't ask for more than that!

I´ve loved series since I was a child. Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys (Frank & Joe), The Wild Stallion, Lassie, Rose Bennet and Beverly Gray are just few of the stories I would loose myself in as a kid. I shall be forever thankful to the publishing companies who made those books available to me through translation.

Then as I grew older and hit my teenage years I began to expand my reading materials but I still read series as a matter of course.

In adulthood I´ve read numerous series that I´ve liked and loved, but my all time favotires will always be the Only-series by Elizabeth Lowell, the Hagen-series by Kay Hooper (Joshua Long and his gang of friends) and finally the Harry Potter series.

    Sirry.

    Hmmmm
    Let's see....
I think I have loved the Winston brothers (and cousins) by Lori, the dust bunnies by Jayne, the Donovan's by Ann, the marines by Susie, the McGregors by Nora Roberts, Rarities by Ann, St Kilda by Ann, the Bayou by Stella, the alphabet by Sue Grafton, the flowers by Nora Roberts, the Cherokee Point by Beverly Barton, the McKenzies by Linda Howard, etc, etc. The list goes on. I am not sure I have ever found a series I didn't like, and many I have loved so much that I read them at least once year. Thank goodness you people keep writing them or I would go crazy wondering what was happening now in my "families'" lives. Oh and Jayne, I just reread the Eclipse Bay series. Again!

Thank you, all of you wonderful writers, for feeding my addiction. I love you guys!

Thanks Jayne, for the mention, and Lori, for letting me know! (I've gotten behind on blogs after being away for three weeks with Lori's conference and a long road trip) I absolutely love reading a series and my shelves are full of them: have Lori's Winston Brothers and Visitation stories and her sexy fighters, almost everything Jayne's written (including books under all of your alternate egos)Christine Feehan's Carpathians, and Drake sisters and Game series. I'm also a fan of Robyn Carr's Virgin River stories, have all of Angela Knight's Mageverse and am busy starting on her newest time traveler series. There's Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld and Lori Handeland's werewolves and of course JR Ward's Brotherhood of the Black Dagger...and I could go on, but it would take all day and explain why my keeper shelves are bulging. I love the chance to reconnect with characters, as much when I write about them as when I read about them. (Which is why I'm so thrilled Kensington keeps asking for more of my Chanku!)

    Hi Jayne!!

I too am addicted to Stella's Bayou series. :D They are so much fun to read and I always say that Stella writes the creepiest villains.
I think that series books is the reason why as readers we always want more. We love the characters so much that we don't want to say goodbye.
My other favorite series are the In Death series, not only because of Eve and Roarke but also cause of the minor characters as well. I love McNab and Peabody.
I also love Kate Douglas' Chanku. She had me at Stefan and hasn't let go since. Of course Anton is in my stable of hissums. :D
Besides your Arcane series I also love your paranormal series too.
Oh and there is the Tori Carrington Sofie Metropolis series. I very rarely read anything in first person but I love Sofie.

Count me in as a series lover also! I've been on a big Urban Fantasy kick lately so I have to rec Carrie Vaughn, and Vicki Petterssen. Also CJ Lyons has the first book in her new medical romantic suspense out and it's totally worth the read. Really great stuff! The House of the Night series that PC and Kristen Cast write together as well as Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires--yes they're both young adult but they're a blast!

Like you, Jayne, I think my love of series started with the Nancy Drew books and The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. I've been into so many since then that it's difficult to name more than a handful: The Inspector Linley series by Elizabeth George. I loved Dick Francis in his prime. Also read Robert Parker's Spenser books.

Now I'm a huge fan of all the series currently being written by my fellow Quills. Can't wait to try several new ones mentioned here, including Virginia Kantra's "Sea" series.

I'm with Barb on the JD Robb In Death series-love em. I also love Parker's Spencer series, but not as fond of Jesse Stone and haven't tried the Sunny Randall. Like EG, I loved the older Dick Francis books.

Two authors who wrote historicals I loved but no longer do are Lisa Kleypus (Wallflower series) and Susan Kay Law (Wedding series) Miss those big time.

Great blog, Jayne. Enjoy Hawaii! (Like that's a stretch)

Nora Roberts' Gallagher trilogy, Mary Balogh's Simply & Slightly books, Jo Beverly's Mallorans as well as her Company of Rogues series are all favorites.

I LOVE Kay Hooper's Bishop books, as well as Catherine Coulter's FBI series.

If you like your mystery with a heavy side of dry, tongue-in-cheek humor, check out Donna Andrews' Meg Langlow series that starts with Murder With Peacocks. It is a great set of books that will have you laughing throughout.

Oh, and lest we forget a major portion of my daily reading, my boys (ages 8 & 5) and I really like Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House books.

I love series, like everyone else here. I think partially it's finding out further what happens to them, and it's also because I enjoy spending time with people I like, and despite being fictional, they are people I like :).

I second a lot of the above. I just wanted to add a couple mystery series with a romantic thread. I'd recommend P.B. Ryan's six book series set in Gilded Age Boston -- I love "Misseeny" as her charge (Nell Sweeney is a governess) calls her. And I'd also recommend Victoria Thompson's Gaslight mysteries, set in turn-of-the-century New York. Both authors come from a romance background, by the way.

    Enjoy!

I am a HUGE series reader- I would have to say about 50% of my books are from one series or another.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Anne Stuart's "Ice" Books. Fire and Ice, the last one, just came out last month. Rather dark, with VERY flawed characters, but compelling.

This past winter, I read all of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. The character of Harry Dresden is compelling because of his honesty as narrator and his power as wizard. Fantasy is not my normal genre, but the books are so well written that I can become quickly engrossed in them.

My reason for liking series is the characters more than the world. Picking up a new book with a familiar character is like meeting up with an old friend to see what they've been up to. It is fascinating to see how they change from one book to the next (or not, if the series is more plot driven).

Jayne, Wonderful topic. The first series that hooked me was written by Enid Blyton (I was a mere snippet at the time) followed by Mazo de la Roche.

Many of my favorites have been mentioned. Don't think Robert Parker's SUNNY RANDALL series was, though. Donna Leon. Lee Child. Alan Furst. R. F. Delderfield! Who wrote POLDARK? All of my Quill sisters. Just finished Susan's LETTING LOOSE, the first in her Sisterhood Trilogy and it's, of course, a treat.

Lots of you are mentioning teen p.i. series but I don't think I saw anyone mention Judy Bolton by Margaret Sutton. They were a little more "adult" than Nancy Drew, and it was one of the series I loved best. Unfortunately, since none of them seem to have been reprinted recently, I haven't been able to find any of them, even used, for under $20.

Were the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books written by more than one writer, though writing as Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon?

I really wonder what series this is! Of course I don't agree with the equation romance reader = pathetic loser--but if she only read Harlequins with titles like THE SHEIKH'S LOVE-SLAVE and BOUGHT BY THE BILLIONAIRE, and had a dead-end job she hated and was doing nothing to better herself, and kept getting involved with the wrong men, THEN I might think the romance novels were a sign that she was a loser.

OTOH, if she read Krentz, Castle, Quick, Lowell, Roberts, Robb--obviously an intellectual!

My favorite series is J.D. Robb's IN DEATH; there are also quite a number of mystery and SF/fantasy series I follow with eagerness.
