    Trash Talking

The RITA is Romance Writers of America's highest award, so when I received my very first nomination this year for Coming Undone it was a pretty big thrill for me. Since then, however, I've had an even bigger thrill--getting to know several of my sister nominees.

Diana Holquist contacted the eight nominees (well seven, plus her if you wanna be literal) and proposed we do a trash talk video to spoof ourselves. She put us all together, enlisted Lindsay Farber to produce the final result and wrote the story board.

The latter went through some changes. Hey, you didn't really think you could involve this many writers and not have all of us put our two cents in, did you? But without Diana it never would have gotten off the ground.

Not everyone was comfortable with the idea. I wasn't at first, since I tend to get uber selfconscious when video cameras are pointed my way and I'm expected to say something brilliant, or, okay even comprehensible. But the whole trash talking concept sounded like way too much fun not to stretch my comfort level.

And I'm so glad I did. Because those of us who ended up doing this video had a blast. And as Toni Blake pointed out, we got the extra added bonus of bonding over it. I was blown away at how natural and funny my sister finalists were--they just cracked me up. And win or lose, I'm truly privileged to be included in such marvelous company.

So, here it is. I hope you get as big a kick out of watching it as I did participating in it.

P.S. Dearauthor.com is having a poll on the right hand column of their main page as to who should win the RITA for this category. I'm betting a lot of you have read a lot of us. Drop by and cast your vote.

Anderson--I'm seeing a whole new side of you! Movie star in the making. But you ladies will have to get over the shyness factor if you're going to get to the top...

Aw, you give me way too much credit, Susan. What makes this video work, I think, is that everyone took their parts and ran with them. Susan, for example, came up with the puppies yapping bit, one of the funniest bits of the video. When Toni told me her idea to wear her RITA dress, I nearly fell on the floor. Everyone was so gutsy and brave and silly. I even heard a rumor Susan did the video in her p.j.'s.

Everyone brought something to the show. Next time, we're installing metal detectors.

Hi Susan, Lori, and other Quill Ladies! : )

I have to disagree with Diana - she deserves SO much of the credit for this (without her, there would be no video!) and so does our dear Lindsey who put it all together for us and also played Rachel Gibson's publicist.

Like Susan, I, too, am WAY camera shy. I'm fine with a "regular" camera, but something about being video-taped has always made me feel very self-conscious. But because this sounded so fun, I decided it would be a good chance to help me get more comfortable doing this sort of thing, and I'm SO glad I did!

When I found out I was a finalist, I knew fun things awaited, but I had no idea something THIS cool would come along : )

So, Stella, you think I'm ready for the red carpet? Nah, you're right. Prob'ly not.

Deb, Lori, this was a blast. I didn't know I had it in me.

Toni, that's me, too. Regular cameras aren't a problem, unless people take forever to take the pic, then it goes from feeling natural to getting that spray-starched lip thing. But video cameras have always made me feel like a vampire faced with a cross--my first impulse is to hiss and toss an arm up to sheild my face.

And Diana, yep, I did this in my favorite Target jammies. I was just going to experiment with my camera and a tripod to see how it worked, then I got sucked in to by role playing. And I agree with Toni: you and Lindsey deserve beaucoup credit.

I've been amazed by the response to this. I honestly did it for the fun of it, never imagined so many people would view it.

Now I really do wish I'd lost those extra pounds first...lol!

Susan, the video is great! Love the way it plays against the romance writer stereotype!!! Frank watched it with me and was amazed at what good actresses you all are. (In addition to being great writers, of course).

As a reader and a fan, I absolutely loved this video! It was so much fun to see the personalities of all of you authors. Seeing you "in person" reinforces the glimpses that we readers get from reading your books. Congratulations to all of you! Best of luck with the award, but truly all of you are already winners!

Ladies you were de-wonderful! Trash talking, stuffed puppies, jammies, swords, moms and the search for the perfect bling. Can we stay tuned for more episodes?

I got my sis to watch it, and she cracked up. She kept saying, "These are all successful writers, right?"
    LOL
I guess you "successful" sorts aren't supposed to clown around so much. ;-) Monica said that was the great contradiction - how fun you all were having when so many people think professional writers are stodgy, overly-educated stiffs.

    You ladies rock!

Leslie, I have been amazed as well. I think Jayne probably hit it on the head that it resonates with so many because we are playing against what so many perceive our personalities to be like.

Thanks for the kudos, everyone. It was a hoot to make and I just love that it seems to be a hoot to watch as well!

A fun presentation. Are all of you first-time finalists? You did a great job, Susan.

Does anyone know who won the RITA in 1982? Did the trash talk help?

I shall abstain from voting since I've yet to read one of the books nominated in this category. I know, shame on me for still not getting around to Susan's at least. But my concentration has been maxed out. If I can't even read, I know I'm in bad shape.
