We have a play date with Carly Phillips!!

I have a special guest today! Carly Phillips has been rockin' the bestseller lists (Can you say NYT, USToday, Waldenbooks and. . . well, pretty much everything) for several years now. She writes funny, sexy contemporary romance and you all know that works for me! Her latest is Hot Property.

But rather than have me talk about Carly, let's do something more interesting and let her speak for herself. Oh, but first--not only do we have a cool guest, but she comes bearing gifts! Carly's going to autograph a copy of Hot Property for one lucky poster, so check back tomorrow night to see whose name was drawn.

    Welcome, Carly!!

Giving Birth to and Raising Children
(the human kind and the kind made of paper)

Just last week, My husband and I had a very tough time with my oldest teenager. Without going into details, thank goodness she is OK. We are very grateful and hope lessons were learned. This experience led me to think about how children don’t come with instruction manuals and as parents, all we can do is our very best. The same can be said of my other children – my books.

Unlike my real children, who I hopefully can continue to teach and grow and mold into healthy safe and happy adults, there reaches a point in the birth of a book, when we must send them out into the world with no further say in who they are and what they become. We put them out to there and expose them to the world, virtues, vices and all. Just like our kids, only they never change.

HOT PROPERTY is my current book out now. It’s the last book in the Hot Zone Series of books (Hot Stuff, Hot Number, Hot Item and now Hot Property) and it forces me to say goodbye to this set of children and begin the process of raising/creating new ones.

Unlike some authors, I am able to move on to a new book fairly easily because I get a rush of excitement each time I start something new. That is, until the hard part of actually developing the characters begins!

And as a reader, when my favorite author finishes a series or a book, I’m sad – but I’m already excited for the next one – regardless of what they’re writing. (Unless it’s a complete genre switch but that’s for another blog, since I tend to only read romance!)

So I’m wondering … Authors out there – do you move from ending one book or series easily and jump into the next? Or do you angst?

And Readers (the people we, as authors, count on) – as much as you know you will miss the end of a series of books, do you get excited by the start of a new one by your favorite author? Or do you need to read it and see if it will strike you before the excitement kicks in?

Hi Carly, and welcome to RWQ!

I love starting a new series by a favored author. I have yet to be disappointed with my core group of authors.

However, I still love series books. Jayne just had a fab blog earlier in the week about series books. We all found that we like them a lot.

But then, it's also fun to explore new territory and new characters. Hmmm, what is my favorite?

Can't decide, love them all. Carly, I must confess that I have never read any of your books, but if they are funny and sexy, I'll definitely have to add you to my author list.

Good luck with the new book. I'm off to Borders tomorrow to pick up Hot Stuff. I prefer to read them in order if at all possible. Thanks for joining us today.

    Thanks! In order means:
Hot Stuff, Hot Number, Hot Item and then HOT PROPERTY ... but they stand alone.

I hear you. For an author, in my case anyway, I reach a point where I can't write in a series anymore. I need something fresh and new. So for example in October I'm starting a new series with LUCKY CHARM about three male cousins and a centuries old curse.

    Hi Carly!

I love series, especially those written by my favorite authors. Some are harder to say goodbye to than others. I just finished the arc of a final book in a paranormal series that I have absolutely adored. The journey was very emotional and saying good-bye to this family was horrible! That being said, I'm always very excited to pick up the first book in a new series and, if I get homesick for the previous series, I just go back and re-read it! :)

I have loved the Hot Zone books and it seems like I've been waiting for Roper's book forever. I picked up my copy yesterday and will be taking it with me when I leave for the beach today. Sun, surf, a cool drink by my side and one of Carly's hot baseball players in my hands. Sigh...I ask you, what could be better?

I like starting a new series, but then I tend to be very loyal once I've found an author I like, so I'll buy everything they write as it comes out! For me, it is the author's voice that makes their works enjoyable, and that tends to come through no matter the topic.

    Welcome, Carly to RWTQ.

I love your books, esp the Hot Series and you have combined baseball which I love with a series I love; I cant go wrong.

I do love series books and always grab them up - as for looking to see what the story is about, not necessary if by a fav author of mine; unless I see it is a different type than I like - not into pararnormal or vamp, etc.

    Happy Weekend to All.

As a writer, sometimes I do have my mourning periods after I complete certain books and can't write for awhile, sometimes I don't. I guess it depends on how strongly the characters gripped me.

As a reader, if I am really into the series, I feel a great sense of loss - and then I look for more work by that author and see if I will be as captivated by their next book.

Either way (writer or reader), I thoroughly enjoy everything related to books!

Hiya Carly! Welcome back to RWQ!
I read HOT STUFF and somehow didn't realize it was the beginning of a series... lol. I'll be sure to pick up the others.

Uhm... as far as series by other authors... if I'm a fan of an author's work... I'll buy anything they write, whether it's series or no. If it's a new series, I'm excited to be introduced to the new family. There's still nothing like diving into a book in the middle of a series where it feels like visiting friends. IMHO. LOL.

Well said, Zita. It's voice for me too. I buy an author consistently if I like their voice. But characters and motivation counts a lot for me too. I have to believe in them. :)

    Thanks, PJ and Pat.

Deb, the books were spaced out, so maybe you didn't realize. I have 2 books out a year (new) and one reissue.

    Hey Carly,

Thanks for visiting! You look as gorgeous as ever.

You know, I never think about those things when writing. I don't miss the old characters, because I write them until I'm done, and I don't get too excited over the new characters, because I write them when I think of them.
So... I guess I don't give myself a chance to anghst too much. LOL

I know readers sometime have a harder time letting go of a series than I do. I still get emails wanting characters from a series I consider long gone.

I think I've been extremely fortunate that my publishers have been willing to let me visit or revisit series at will. ;-)

    Hugs!

Hi Carly! Read you'd be over here from Plotmonkeys. And hello to all you other lovely readers and authors today!

I have to say that I get so excited when an author I love comes out with a new series. I am never disappointed! I do admit, sometimes I am sad to see a series end, but they always leave off so well, I'm left feeling very much happy and fulfilled and ecstatic about new prospects and new characters to learn about and come to love.

As a reader I love a series, but I understand when enough is enough. Since you are one of my auto-buys I have read all of your series and can't wait to see what you come out with next. So keep writing great stories.

As a new writer I am finding it hard to leave my characters. They have been in my head for so long and I have become attached to them as if they are real friends that I have to move away from. I've been told that this is normal and that I should just start my next book that way I will have my focus turned to something new and not something old.

I hear you, Lori. In the beginning, I wrote what I wanted at will. NOw though I choose to plan a series, x amount of books, and that's that. Unless ... like The Hot Zone was a trilogy until everyone wrote asking for John Roper and his story just came to me during baseball season, so I thought ... why not? But that was the end for me. I love what I'm working on now. If only my family would cooperate in not angsting me out so I could write! ;(

Is there a way to NOT have to put in the password info each time I post?

Thank you, Patty! It gets easier the more you write. In the beginning, everything is so new and fresh. Just keep moving forward. That's how you learn and grow!

Hi, Amarietags! Glad to see you here :)

I'll have spurts today when I'm out, will check back in when I get back, post again, the go out again. Kids are finishing last day of school and need some shuffling around!

Carly - My problem is that I have too many characters in my head all clamoring for attention and development, usually right in the middle of a project that doesn't concern them at all. What I think will be a single title often develops into more as secondary characters want their stories to be told. Love the "Hot" series. Romance and Baseball! Does it get much better?

    Hello!

As a reader, I tend to become really excited when my favorite authors start a new series--particulary you and the Quills (and I'm glad you posted because I didn't realize you had a new book out!) Still, time is valuable, so when authors I don't know come out with a series, I will usually wait a couple of years until they are done and read everything at the same time. I did that with J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Both ways work for me.

    Thanks for sharing with us,

    Hi Carly!! (waving madly)

Just wanted to pop over and say hello. AS a reader I get really excited about a new series. I'm always glad to know one of my favorite authors--like you for instance--is starting a new one. One of my favs of yours was the Chandler Brothers series. It has a place of honor on my shelf as do all of your books. That series just grabbed me by the heart strings and wouldn't let go.

As an author, I've never written a series. Wouldn't know where to begin.

Have a super day guesting here and have a wonderful weekend. I agree with Lori, btw, you look gorgeous but then you always do. Love your glasses!

P.S. I'm reading Hot Property and loving it!!!

    Hi Carly!

From a reader's point of view, as much as I love finding new authors and seeing what their writing is like. The excitement level is really different in the beginning. After reading your book "Body Heat", everytime I pass the romance section, I skim the authors' last names... " M... N... O... P!" haha. I love seeing your new books up and more likely than not, I try to get hold of it.

Well keep writing, cause your avid readers can't wait for more. Please enter me in the contest. Thank you. =)

Jeez, a girl sleeps in a little and wakes up to find she's missed half the party!! Great blog, Carly!

I find it satisfying to finish a series, because you've finally wound everything up and there's room to work on all those possibilities scratching in the back of your mind for the next one.

Of course, that said, when I wrote Hot & Bothered which was supposed to be the last of my Marine series, I didn't count on P.J. Morgan. That little girl was merely supposed to be a walk on character. Then she set my imagination on fire, made me write her a bigger part in the book--then demanded a story of her own. (Coming Undone) I've never had a character compel me quite the way she did.

When a favorite author starts a new series, I almost always read that one too. The only time that I don't is when the author changes genres on me. If it is a genre that I don't care for, I don't even give the new book a try.

I enjoy muliple series from the same author (case in point the Bachelor series and Hot Zones)...I do have a special place in my heart for the Bachelor series (although if my 3 boys end up in as much trouble as the Chandler boys, I am in series trouble). I find I tend to get 'anal' though and start getting 'nit picky' about the threads between books, so, that is not a good thing....

As a reader, I am most always bummed when a series ends. Although in the long run, as long as an author keeps writing, it doesn't matter. (Most of the time.) New experiences await.

For example. I read them a while after they appeared, but I was sorry that Jayne's Amaryllis/Zinnia/Orchid were all there were. But then there was After Dark, and there were dust bunnies. And it was good.

(On the other hand, I am still seriously bummed with Elizabeth/Ann that after Midnight in Ruby Bayou there were no more Donovans. Mentions, yes, but we never met the other twins! More importantly, the tone of her books changed! They used to be a guaranteed cry-and-sigh, and I used to read and reread them ALL THE TIME. The old ones (MiRB and older), I still do.)

I'm always sad at the ending of a series, especially if it features characters that I've come to cherish or a world that has become familiar, happy place for me.

However, I'm loyal to my favorite authors, as many readers are, and bank on those authors' ability to continue to enthrall and entertain me. Very seldom have I dropped one of favorites unless they go off on a complete tangent into a world that I do not enjoy, e.g. blood-sucking vampires and the like or a series with absolutely gory scenes. Those do not belong in my comfort zone.

    Hi Carly,
As a writer I can say it takes me some down time between books to let go of the characters I've just put in the mail and get into the heads of new ones. Ending a series and starting another in a new local with a whole new town full of people can be daunting. I'm often thinking "Who are these people? Why did I think this could work? What am I doing?" Then long about the third chapter, I begin to like them and settle down.
I sure wouldn't quit this for a real job, though.
    Aloha,

I love your post! As an author, I have a horrible time letting go of my "book babies." (It was much easier with the real kids...sent them off and waved good-bye. I love it when they come to visit--love it just as much when they leave!) I've solved the problem, though--I'm currently writing the fifteenth story in my Wolf Tales series and I get to keep bringing my characters back. I"m contracted for eighteen, so that gives me a reprieve, but I'm not so sure Kensington will go for Wolf Tales XXXIIV!
