    ELIZABETH DOESN'T GROK JPG

This was going to be a really cool, see-what-I-did-on-my-vacation blog, until I ran into problems posting jpgs.

*sound of train wreck in background*

My usual jpg guru was leaving for San Francisco and didn't have time to help me out -- aka, do the ruddy things for me.

*sound of train wreck in foreground*

I've deliberately avoided learning some (okay, most) techie tricks, but I tried some jigging and jagging and jpging on my own.

    *sound of train wreck everywhere*

*Elizabeth crawls out, whimpering and waving white flag*

So, here's how it's going to be: In two weeks I'll either have learned how to post jpgs (HA) or my guru will be back online.

Then I'll bore the bloomers off you with my vacation pics.

    :-)

Until then, I'll hope that I'm not the only militant tech incompetent in the world.

Elizabeth, Hey, to admit you have a problem is the first step, right???
Hi, my name is Annie and it's taken me 6 tries just to get this "comment" online...geesch, talk about technically challenged!
I have a problem...there, now there are 2 of us!! Are we truly alone?

Can't wait to see your vacation pictures... whenever that becomes possible. Nice to have you "back"!
    ;-)

I'm only a militant tech semi-incompetent... I can manage some things. Usually. Sometimes. Ish.

I cheat. I have a Mac. I also have an Iphone and can cheat with it too. I have no problems admitting that I cheat, because I have tried to do those things without cheating and they were too much like work. I also like my forehead unbruised. But, I will gladly ooh and aah over your vacation pics when they get posted, and I will never think less of anyone who at least tried.
    Welcome back,

Welcome back, EL: Hey, I can't figure out the fancy stuff here, either. Talk to Lori Foster or Susan Andersen. They have it licked.

Just now, I'm happy to even get a new page on my computer. I try to get a new site, or sometimes just to back arrow to the previous and nothing happens. Ach!

I'm just thinking of calling friends to ask if I might "borrow" their computer guru for some help. He's got an invalid wife and took early retirement from a job which had a lot to do with computers. I'm definitely getting desperate and my brothers have been no help lately. One hasn't answered any e-mails; I wouldn't have put it past my s-i-l to delete my cries for help. The other told me several years ago to no longer ask him for help. How's that for familial relations.

I've been trying the "PrtSc" (print screen) function this week with totally 000 effect.

Well, I'm glad to have company. Thanks for coming out of this closet. LOL

Do you have any idea how long it's been since I heard someone say "Grok?" Wow...talk about a trip down memory lane.
Kate...who may just stick that old copy of Stranger in a Strange Land in her suitcase for the trip to RWA...

well i was very computer incompetent but my family was even more so so i had a choice learn and have anything they needed done on the computer done by moi or be stuck all the time to and have the computer turn into a snarled messed up thing. so i learned i'm still not amazing but i can build a website and fix a few bugs that show up.

You made quite a few color changes. The nifty blue smilie face was nice.

    :)

I actually got an article published once about how I accidentally posted a STRIPPER on my My Space page.

AND I COULDN'T GET HER OFF!!!

It was NOT the impression I was hoping to give to people who wanted to 'friend' me.

Well shoot, you know I would have helped! I'd be glad to!
Anytime you want something like that, drop me a line - I'm here and more than willing.

I think with RWA this week, just about everyone is gone. Well, cept me, cuz I'm too lazy to travel that far right now. LOL

annie--I not only admit, I proclaim!
There's only so much time in a day. I choose to spend it in non-techie ways. (Unless something techie interferes with my writing; then I'm a VERY directed learner.)

kate--it was a blast from the past for me, too. (My son's generation picked it up, I guess from their parents.) Something about jpg and grok seemed perfectly ridiculous, which summed up how I was feeling at the moment.

Hah! From one techie numbscull to another, welcome to my world.

Occasionally (purely by accident) I accomplish some incredible feat--like noticing I can move a file with a "right" click rather than cutting and pasting--and I am so thrilled with myself it takes, ooh, at least until the next blooper to squish my head again.

Now I think of it, it was SWK (alian, She Who Knows Cissy of Writerspace) who told me about that right click.

    Shucks,

That has a tiny, faint hint of techno-smugness abouut it, EL. :-) In truth, I believe you're only one small step ahead of me. (Besides, I've promised myself I will learn the whole digital camera trick before the holidays. That would be the ones in December. lolololol)

To Lori (and Elizabeth: I was a freshman in high school when someone handed me a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land and said it would change my life. It was seriously "underground" in my high school as the teachers were confiscating it when they found it. It probably did help me come to a swift decision on pursuing my husband because he was the first guy I dated who also knew and loved the book. Lori should read it.

EG--for me, there was no "learning" about the digital, as I was a camera freak with interchangeable lenses, filters, and the whole tortilla.

Lori--STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND is a science fiction book from the '60s by Robert Heinlein. It was rediscovered in the '80s and has become an "underground" hit with each generation since.

anonymous--CONFISCATED the book. Ye gods and little fishes, as my grandmother used to say; what is a high school teacher doing practicing that level of censorship? (Unless you're reading aloud during his/her class!)

    Blogger Elizabeth Guest said...

EL: okay, you are waaayyyyy ahead of me on the whole camera thing.:-)

I remember reading STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND when I was a girl. In fact, I read every Heinlein book out there at the time. I was a huge SciFi fan in those days.

    Confiscated? Wow. Weird.

    Lori

    12:13 PM
    Blogger elizabeth said...

Lori--grok means to get it, to understand the whole enchalada of a thing, situation, or person at a visceral level.

    I don't grok jpgs.

Oh my goodness, Elizabeth! No way
are you alone, you can't see me but
I'm standing right next to you in
the "techless" line! My poor Honey
gets calls almost daily when I run
    into tech problems. Let's see,
today's problem: I received an ad
proof from our newspaper for our
church festival. I was to check the ad and return it. Couldn't open the email, Honey had to
talk me through the process of recovering the ad which had ended
up on the desktop. Process was
    successful today, but there have
been days when I have had to wait for him to get home! Those days are part of the reason why I have
    no fingernails!!
