Elizabeth G: Dreams do come true...

Like many people I tend to think about the dreams, big and small, that still elude me. But every now and then something wonderful happens to remind me, to remind all of us, that dreams can and do come true. When that happens, it’s cause to celebrate.

This is one of those dreams and one of those celebrations.

I recently got an e-mail from a good friend of mine, a fellow writer, who lives right here in town. I could tell how excited Janet was even without the extra exclamation marks!!!!!!!

I won’t go into all the details with this blog since I intend to interview Janet in September right here at RWQ, but my friend has worked long and hard, sometimes wondering if her dream of becoming a published author would ever come true.

    Well, it has!

And here’s the proof: the cover of Janet’s first published romance novel. (I’m also including the back cover copy just to give you a taste of the wonderful characters and story she’s created.)

The “orphan train” seemed like small-town spinster Adelaide Crum’s last chance to know the simple joys of family life. So many lost children, every one of them dreaming only of a caring home—the home she longed to offer. And yet the narrow-minded town elders refused to entrust even the most desperate child to a woman alone….

Newspaperman Charles Graves believed his heart was closed forever, but he swore to stand by this lovely, lonely woman who was fighting for the right to take some motherless child into her heart. And her gentle soul and unwavering faith made him wonder if even he could overcome the bitter lessons of the past, and somehow find the courage to love….

I’m absolutely thrilled for Janet. But beyond her hard work, her success, her dream-come-true-at-last, she has inspired me to stop and recall the day I sold my first book, the day I first saw the cover (not nearly as lovely as Janet’s, I’ll tell you!), the day I walked into a book store and found my “masterpiece” on the shelf for the first time.

Truth to tell, I hadn’t thought about those moments in a very long time. I even had to look up the title of that first book: It was SUMMER STORM written as Suzanne Simmons.

So, even as I celebrate with my friend, I want to thank her for reminding me of my own dreams, those that have come true and those I’m still dreaming of. Thank you, Janet!

Inquiring Minds want to know, of course: What dream/dreams have come true for you that you’ve since taken a little or a lot for granted?

    Happy Summer!

My dream that came true was graduating from college. I got married right out of high school and always regretted not having enough money for college. Eventually, I got divorced but had gone to work at a company that paid for schooling, so I got to go back. I worked full time and was a single mom to two boys at the same time so it took me almost 7 years to do it. Graduation was the dream come true!!! And I too forget how hard I worked and how much it meant to me. Thanks for the reminder to stop and recall occasionally!!

Like Braible my biggest dream had to do with my education. I wanted to go to university but was to scared of it. Thought I wouldn´t manage. Then I finally did and got my degree and that was definetly one of the happiest days in my life.

What a thrill it is to celebrate the realization of my dream at Running with Quills!!! Thanks Elizabeth for having me here and for sharing in my joy!

And thank you for being there for me during the years I waited with sage advice and words of encouragement. Where would we be without friends who understand and support our dreams?

How fun that Courting Miss Adelaide's upcoming release triggered memories of your first book's release. You've had a long, long list of dreams come true. And continue to see them realized. That's something we writers never take for granted.

It'll be fun to share in the joy of your readers' dreams.

    Congratulations!

I've never visited Running with Quills before. I'll definitely be back.

I'm reading Jayne Ann Krentz's Perfect Partners again right now. It's only my favorites shelf and I reread it once a year or so when ever I need to get lost in a hilarious book.

Wow, Janet, I loved reading the back-cover copy -- makes me even more eager for the release of your book! I'm so happy for you, girlfriend!

Though I'm still waiting for my writing dreams to come true, another dream I had all my life was having my own horse. Instead, several years ago a friend offered me the use of one of her horses for pleasure riding and lessons. Which was almost better because I didn't have the expense or day-to-day responsibilities. I've really missed that dear old fella since we moved two years ago.

Hi Myra. Thanks! I thought Steeple Hill did a great job with the back cover blurb.

With your persistance and talent, you'll get your writing dream. We just wish it would hurry, but timing is everything.

I admire anyone who can handle a horse and look as great as you do in the riding habit. Black Beauty was one of my favorite childhood books, but after a couple of scary experiences with horses, I admire them from afar. It's fun how some dreams evolve. Hope you can find another "loaner" horse in your new location!

Hiya Janet and welcome to RWQ. CONGRATULATIONS! Whatta wonderful event to be a witness to...erm... of... for... sheesh. LOL.

Oh, I still have unrealized dreams that I keep on a shelf and bring out every now and then to contemplate. Since I'm only 41 I have plenty of time to keep working on them, though. The ones that have come true? Well... raising healthy, productive and independent children come to mind as well as the fact that after kissing tons of frogs I ended up with my Prince Charming. Finally. Hoorah for me! He's astonishing.

Congratulations, again! I'll be sure to pick up your very newly released story, COURTING MISS ADELAIDE. Thanks, EG, for the introduction.

I've had a lot of dreams come true, mainly raising four healthy daughters to be thinking, productive, honorable young women. But this getting published stuff. that's just a different kind of dream. I mean with the kids, you've just gotta work hard everyday, do your best, pray a lot.

But it's a job that's laid out in front of you more than a dream.

I had so little hope that I'd ever get a book published. I spent so many years struggling and failing that I'd really gotten in this comfort zone of hopelessness and expected to be rejected.

When it finally happened it was so amazing. A wonder. I mean I worked hard for it. I still am working hard for it...but it was this tantalizing...chimera...an impossible dream to me.

    And it happened. Amazing.

    Hi, Janet and Elizabeth:

What an exciting time and I hope you enjoy every minute. And it's fun to visit here and see so many favorites have been here before me.

I've had most of my dreams come true, for which I'm so very thankful, though I have to admit they didn't always come true in a straight line and I've had to backtrack and take a lot of detours because I didn't always recognise a dream-come-true when it was right in front of my face.

That was way too long of a sentence, wasn't it?

Anyway, God bless you, Janet, and keep enjoying.

    Janet,

It's now Thursday, July 10. Chiming in after hearing about your blog visit in the FH&L digest.

I can't wait to read Courting Miss Adelaide. The cover and blurb are wonderful, and your heroine sounds like a fascinating character.

Historical inspirationals set in your time period are my absolute favorites. They're what I read and what I've written. I'm delighted Steeple Hill added this line.

To answer the question about my dreams: I look forward to the day my name is on the cover of a book, but I'm doing my best to enjoy the journey.

Finaling in my first RWA® chapter contest was a dream come true. Getting the call in March and learning that two of my manuscripts finaled in the Golden Heart inspy category is one I never expected to realize. A third is going to my first National. Can't wait to meet all of you amazing, talented women.

Courting Miss Adelaide was a Golden Heart finalist in 2005, but didn't sell until 2006 when Steeple Hill announced the LI Historical line. I've waited two years for the book's release so it seems just around the corner now.

I guess I've never been very ambitious or had very high goals. At the moment I can think of only one dream that has come true and that I take for granted: being able to read at least some of the many books I want to. There never seems to be enough time for it.

BTW, I have Summer Storm, as yet unread. The same goes for a number of your other books, as well as books by every other author here.
