    INDEPENDENCE DAY - Kay Stockham

    Photobucket

    Morning everyone!
Today I'm introducing my good friend and fab writer, Kay Stockham.
I hope you'll give her a warm Quill welcome!

Hello, Quills! It’s a pleasure to be here, especially today, one of America’s most celebrated holidays. Anyone else always find themselves singing Martina McBride’s song by the same name?

July 4th celebrations are so much fun. It’s my husband’s favorite holiday due to the fireworks displays, not to mention the food (Oh, my!), and we’ll be heading out later for some fun.

Until then I’d like to chat about my latest release, HIS SON’S TEACHER, which hits store shelves next week on July 8.

Have you ever wanted to declare independence of something? An ex-spouse, a friendship, a bad habit? My heroine does. Jennifer Rose is sick of spending her evenings alone, eating herself into oblivion. But how to get out of the rut and lose the weight she’s gained? Surrounded by her friends, she witnesses her ex-husband in a torrid kiss with his beach bunny mistress, the woman he left Jenn for—and Jenn takes that all-important step. She declares her summer vacation the Summer of Jenn. Not only is she determined to lose the weight she’s put on, she’s taking her life back and determined to go on her dream vacation to Paradise Island, even if it means going alone. Learning gym owner Nick Tulane needs a tutor for his son, she makes Nick an unusual proposition in trading tutoring for a private, personal trainer. She never dreams Nick would insist on training her himself, or that a pudgy bookworm would have anything in common with the hunky gym owner. But as time passes and they grow closer, Jenn learns Nick has issues of his own, including a secret Nick’s guarded for so long he’s alienated himself from the people he loves most.

I loved writing Jenn’s character, and as I worked through her character arc and changed her way of thinking about herself, her weight, food and life, I found my own attitude changing. So much so I joined a local Weight Watchers group and vowed to get the extra weight I carried off. I knew exactly what Jenn was experiencing and thinking throughout the story because I’ve been there and thought those things myself. And I give my fictional character full credit for inspiring me to get my rear to the WW meetings.

I hope you’ll take a moment out of your busy day to check out my website at http://www.kaystockham.com/
I host a weekly contest on my blog as well as Launch Party contests. Also posted there are book trailers (including one for HIS SON’S TEACHER and THE POWER OF LOVE), WW progress reports (losing weight is a bumpy road full of pot holes—and chocolate), updates on my latest hobby of beading and jewelry making (to keep my hands from snacking), and Getting To Know segments where your favorite authors answer some quirky questions.

Until then, I’m giving away a pair of beautiful earrings I made in honor of this wonderful day, and will choose a winner from those who post a response to the following question:

If you could declare independence from anything be it person, habit, vice or whatever, what would it be?

Thanks for hosting me, Quills (waving at Lori!).
I hope you’ll make today a true independence day!

Hey Kay I always thought you looked great. Congrats on the weight loss. I need to do that asap.

I loved Jenn and Nick, what great characters. I can really id with Jenn and her weight struggles.

For me besides the weight, I wish I had a stronger belief in myself. Someday.

    Happy 4th.

Hi, Margaret! Thanks for stopping by. :)

Jayne, oh my! I'm such a fan! LOL Thanks for the congrats. I hope you have a great holiday.

Judy, hon, we believe in you. You definitely need to believe in yourself. You can do anything you set your mind to! Go for it. As for the weight issue... I've struggled with my weight my whole life and it's a daily battle now. But I'm getting there. I want to be healthy, I want to be around for my kids so...it's a choice. I don't always make the right one but if I slack off, the key is getting right back on the road again. Good luck!

Welcome to RWQ, Kay! It's pretty inspiring to know that your own story motivated you. Whoda thunk? lol. I look forward to reading HIS SON'S TEACHER.

Oh so many things to become independent from... of... however the proper way to type that is...lol.

Smoking... quit for 3 years and started again... have a 'script for Chantix that I haven't "cashed" yet. I'm working on it. I carry an extra 50# around on my 5' frame that would benefit highly from running. I started watching my diet in February after a Doc visit and I've managed to get rid of 18 of those 50. A family barbeque this afternoon is gonna be a challenge...ha!

Exercise is the next step. Apparently I have no problem claiming independence from exercise...lolol. Shame on me. I do yoga and it's just not enough so it's running for me. Soon. Today. *sigh*

Thanks for the "vent" spot ;-) Happy Independence Day!

    Kay,

I definitely am going to check out your book!! The next time i am out, I will look for it. Sounds great.

I am a teacher as well and spending most of my summer completing projects around the house and relaxing as well. :)

What would I want to declare independence of?

Self doubt. My other vices tend to come from that one.

Kay--I'm putting your book on my Saturday shopping list! It sounds wonderful and might just be the inspiration I need to tone up. And as to declaring independence, I would like to declare independence from housework, but somehow I don't think that's going to happen, lol.

Maureen, I'm with you on declaring independence from bathroom cleaning. Shouldn't there be bathroom elves who clean keep it spotless so we don't have to?

dfender, you can do it! Have fun at the BBQ. As to the smoking and weight, just take it a day at a time. A friend quit smoking cold turkey after forty some years. She hasn't had one since. You can do it. Keep us posted.

Lori Canada, self-doubt is a biggie, especially for women. I'm bad for self-doubt and negative talk and it's something I'm trying to change. It hit home when my daughter repeated a phrase I'd said to myself. I don't want her talking to herself that way so why do I talk to myself that way?

Jeannie, thanks for popping in! And tone up?? You're my inspiration! Anyone who can run the way you do is awe-inspiring.

Susan, thanks so much for hosting me today. It's so much fun being a guest-Quill. Have a great 4th!

    Waves hi to Kay.

Let's see to answer your question:

Bad habit of being a procrastinator. At times I put things off too long. :)

If I could declare independence from anything it would be food as anything but nourishment. Many of us use food for comfort, celebration, stress relief, etc. This is the main problem that leads us to being overweight. KathyK

I would like to gain independence from Cherry Coke and Wild Cherry Pepsi. I did it from Mountain Dew a couple years ago - surely I can from the cherries!
"His Son's Teacher" was fab-u-lous. My heart reached out to Nick and his son.
And like dfender - I do yoga, but with drinking the cherries and getting older, I'm not firm like I want to be. I have a 3 DVD workout from Crunch that features 3 Pilates workouts. One is a stand up which I really like.
Happy 4th and good to 'see' you Kay!

Happy 4th of July, Kay - and everyone!

I would like to be independent of sweets - my biggest weakness. I also procrastinate frequently and then have to scramble to get things finished - adding an incredible amount of stress to my life!

I loved HIS SON'S TEACHER - Nick and Jenn are wonderful together and their real-life issues are superbly written. Kudos!

I would like to gain independence from soda and my eating habits. I know those things are what's keeping me from losing weight as exercise is not an issue. I get lots of that!

Welcome, Kay, to RWQ! It's great having you visit us on this very special holiday.

I have several habits I'm trying to declare independence from. One is cutting back on diet cola since I think I'm addicted to the stuff. :) So far; so good!

    Happy 4th all!

    Hi Kay!

    HAPPY 4th of JULY!!!
O.k. I would love to declare independence from pressure. To much pressure in my daily life from work, taking care of my mom, my husband, house chores, fixing dinners, grocery shopping, doing bills for my mom, us, my boss and our rental properties, etc. Not enough hours in the day to just sit around and relax and do nothing! So many times I wish I had just a couple more hours to do what I wanted to do. Oh well...that's life I guess! I try to be optimistic and laugh! It sure helps to laugh. It is amazing how it relieves stress sometimes.

Great blog! Thanks for visiting with us today!

Oh, Michelle, I hear you! The pressure of work, kids, family, household duties etc? Oh, yeah. Plus the pressure we put on ourselves. It never ends, does it?

I wish I had some thought-provoking advice or insight but I don't. If you figure out how to ease the pressure, please let us know. I think that's one thing we ALL identify with. Why do we do that to ourselves?

Well...I'm happy to say I don't need to worry about my weight. It's just fine as it is.

In a way, I can certainly second Malin's independence quest. It's a part of trying to cut down on buying books. I find I buy them in spite of of all the sane arguments for no longer doing so. I have 1000s of books and I definitely have not read most of them, as my mother so fondly believed. I just let her believe it because it eased my guilt about buying more books.

Though straitened finances have kept me from buying "all" the books I'd like to, I know I'll never be able to read all the ones I have already--unless I grow to be 140 and do nothing but read. And I'm still buying new books by my favorite authors. LOL

Kay I went shopping today and looked in every store for your book hoping that it would be out this weekend. No luck :( I will just have to go out next weekend. :)

If I could declare my independence from anything it would be from snacking. I go to the gym a minimum of four days a week and I sabitage (? spelling) my hard work with snacking. LOL It's my curse. Congrats on your WW loss and continued luck and good fortune.

    Hi, Ladies!

Oh, snacking. Snacking is my downfall, too. I'll be good all week, think I'm really going to have a great weigh-in and then blow it on something decadent and chocolatey. It's a sickness and one I struggle with (truly). But I crave sweets, especially salty sweets! Mr. Salty, anyone? Oh, my!

Patty, I'm so sorry you didn't find it! My Wal-Mart has them out but not all of them do yet. Let me know what you think when you read it.

Ran, lucky you on your weight! I've always struggled and have been all over the place, unfortunately.

Ellen, (waving!) how are you, sweetie? See you on the eharl boards. Thanks for chatting with me.

    Kay,

I'm so glad Lori invited you to play in the RWQ sandbox! It's been very difficult lately to find straightforward contemporary romance and I'm really looking forward to reading the Tulanes of Tennessee series; I've ordered both HIS SON'S TEACHER and ANOTHER MAN'S BABY for the library where I work.

Your personal story was very inspiring and your website photo is just gorgeous! Congratulations on sticking with it; personally I'd like to declare independence from fatigue and soreness so I could feel more motivated to exercise on a regular basis. I keep telling myself, one day at a time, but it's soooo hard to put heart and soul into a workout when you know you'll be paying for it for days afterward ~
