    JAYNE JOINS THE CIRCUS

Okay, I have not actually run off and joined the circus (or Cirque du Soleil, either) but I have been learning how to juggle flaming batons and I’m getting a lot of experience on that flying trapeze thing. Welcome to my world.

All I can say is that it seemed like a good idea at the time. I would create three worlds of psychic romantic-suspense that would all be linked together by the Arcane Society, an organization dedicated to the paranormal. The cool aspect from my point of view, of course, is that this would allow me to do what I love best – combine romance, mystery and the psychic stuff – in all three of my fictional landscapes. I was so excited, I could hardly stand it. So, I did it.

My Amanda Quick books feature characters from Arcane who live in the Victorian era – a wonderfully atmospheric time of gaslight and fog; an era in which the psychic thing was considered very, very cool. My Jayne Ann Krentz novels focus on heroes and heroines and plots from the modern, contemporary world. And now, unable to restrain myself, I have begun to weave Arcane into my Jayne Castle futuristics.

Hey, I figured that if the concept of the Arcane Society did not work in one or all of my three worlds, I could ease back out and try something else.

As the old saying goes: Be careful what you wish for. What I hoped for, but hardly dared to believe might actually happen, was that I would end up with all three of my names and fictional landscapes linked together in a long-running series. To my amazement, I got my wish. Readers from all three of my worlds seem to love the Arcane Society novels and they’re starting to cross back and forth between the various settings.

But there’s always a dark side, isn’t there? Do you have any idea of how dicey it can be to keep all the characters, incidents, random facts, and just plain old chronology straight when you’re working with any series, let alone one that moves from the past to the present and into the future? I mean, you’re looking at someone who was never even any good at crossword puzzles, for Pete’s sake!

But I am enthralled by the Arcane Society characters and I can’t wait to see what my heroes and heroines will do next in my Quick, Krentz and Castle worlds. So that is why I’m now taking lessons in the fine art of juggling and doing a lot of aerial acrobatic training. Got a lot of flaming batons to keep up in the air.

What do you spend your time trying to balance? How many balls have you got in the air at any given time? I think we all do a lot more of this sort of thing than we realize.

    Sincerely,Jayne

Jayne: This is going to be so cool:) What incredible entertainment you have given all of us and yet you continue to knock our socks off!

How many balls in the air? We-ell, after all the moaning I did last week I think I'd better at least pretend my life is a warm float on a glassy sea!

Now, if you've got a bit of extra time, please come and figure out how I can catch all the flopping telltales in my current book.

    Cheers, Stella

You are a MARVELOUS juggler, Jayne! I love your books in any setting, but the Arcane society has blown me away! Very cool stuff.

Like most writers I juggle family with writing and exercise and relaxing... Something usually loses out, and it's never family, and seldom writing, so that means relaxing and exercise are often forgotten.
But eventually I get it all in there somehow. And I'm working on fitting in a more regular exercise program.

Today I have jury duty, so I need to keep it short.
    Happy Monday everyone!

    Jayne,

Thank GOD that you're a talented juggler! I love that you cross over through all three of your selves with the Arcane Society. LOL. I read, and love, them all.

I juggle the same thing everyone else juggles, no more, no less. Work, home and managing to eeek out a little fun time, too.

    Happy Monday!

    Jayne,
Thank you for your wonderful psychic stuff :)
Do you keep all this juggling on a very large white board or all in your head? I imagine a very large family tree!

Winter sport is over, so no more juggling for me. Looking forward to a relaxing spring and summer and maybe some juggling every other day!

STELLA: A sister juggler! Let's face it: the writing life is a high-wire act with no net.

AUSSIE DEE: Ahhh. You just made my entire day!!!!

KRIS B: Sometimes I scare myself. But the secret to surviving a series is to get so deep into in your head that it becomes your other "family". You keep track of relatives and family secrets the way yo do in life, I think. And sometimes you forget whatshisface's name...

AI (LORI): Jury duty? Good for you!!! You do us proud. I think that and voting are the two most important acts of civic duty that a citizen can do for her country.

DFENDER: Thanks so much for the kind words on Arcane. I agree, we all do a lot more juggling than we realize! Guess we have a natural talent for it, like it or not.

TINA: I'm thrilled to hear your enjoying Arcane. No, no white boards but I am trying to construct what we in the writing business call a "bible" -- a record of names, critical events and random facts in each book that we don't want to forget. Sadly, that job is a lot harder and more time consuming that it sounds

    ROFLOL!

Ah, Jayne, I was wondering when it would hit you. I saw this happening, and, while have been enjoying the heck out of the stories in all three genres, I marveled at how you kept things straight. You have made a bold move in the literary world. Be proud! Not many authors (or anyone, really) would have the cajones it takes to step out there, like you have, on the tightrope. Some authors (men) would need a couple of assistants (women) to handle the level of multitasking you seem to do so easily. You make us all want to be as bold and courageous as you are.

Now, what are you DOING? Reading posts on the blog? Get writing, girl!

Ann/EL hit the nail on the head! Frankly the idea of juggling three separate time periods with a series as wonderful as your Arcane Society kind of makes my head hurt. lololololol But if anyone can do it, it's you, Jayne!

LOL on the juggling/trapeze act, Jayne! I can just see you in your fluffy little costume on the high wire ...

I just adore the way you have managed to seamlessly blend the Arcane Society into all your time periods.

Have you considered using an automated program to keep track for you? I know there are some out there ~

*Snicker* I saw the reference to the Arcane Society in Dark Light.

I'm thoroughly entertained by your Arcane Society books and am looking forward to many more.

You need a chart - or a spreadsheet - maybe in Excel - to track all these folks.

As Ann/EL says, "Your own fault for being so talented and disciplined."

Oh - and Ann/EL?? Now that you seem to be back from your travels, get to writing.

LYNNE THOMAS: Cajones? Wow. Never actually pictured myself with a set of those, LOL, but I get your point. (I know just enough Spanish to be dangerous). Thanks for the kind words on the series! I needed the pep talk today. And congratulations on your own juggling!

EL: Yes, my friend, you had better duck and run...I've seen you do some amazing juggling, too.

EG: Thanks, but every so often I do wonder how big this three ring circus is going to get.

LYNNE W: A fluffly little costume? Hadn't thought about that angle. I definitely need one of those!

LOU: Yep, Arcane has definitely started to appear in my Jayne Castle books. I just turned in the manuscript for the next title in that series, OBSIDIAN PREY, and it is definitely Arcane! Hope you like it. (And, of course, there is a new, heroic dust bunny in the story. Goes by the name of Vincent).

Pink. I definitely see you in neon pink. With lots of glitter. *snicker*

I'm sorry, did you say something? I was so busy drooling over Running Hot's cover, I, um, didn't quite catch that.

Oh, wait, yeah. . .juggling. That's a toughie. I, too, have the usual day-to-day griz plus the work/series stuff. The Bible is definitely a help--except I always seem to leave out the one thing in it that needs checking. Ai-yi-yi.

I was definately jumping up and down in my reading chair as I got to the end of Dark Light. I'm in total awe of writers who seem to pull stories, plots, random facts together so perfectly. I always wondered if J.K. Rowling had the whole thing in her head from the first to build a world like the wizarding one she created and have all the details fall into place at the end. I see the Arcane Society going the same way; not that there will be an end to it ; )

As for myself I always have too much on my plate. The family business of growing plants all day then making jewelry most evening (which is where the personal money comes from until the plants start paying off again) and now I teach yoga too. Thankfully that's only one day a week, but if I don't get my own practice in I don't feel like I teach a very good class. Probably the same way with writing - got to keep reading.

Jayne, maybe a very devoted and detail oriented fan could help with your family bible - especailly those around here who finish the book and start reading it again in the same sitting.

    Next summer...so far away.
Oh, well, I'll just have to read "Running Hot" a couple of times.
BTW, I just reread "Family Man" for the fifth or sixth time, and I still love those characters!
Thanks for books that keep giving.

PS I still want a real dust bunny of my own someday.

Love them all and have reread them so often I practically have them memorized.

Seriously, I'd be interested in doing a concordance, as has been done for other writers such as Nora Roberts and Lilian Jackson Braun. I have experience, as co-compiler of "A Reader's Guide to the Commonwealth" for SILVERLOCK by John Myers Myers--a book which is practically a short course in the history of world literature!

If you're interested in contracting out such a project for publication--or even for private use--please let me know. Have books, will travel.

LOUIS: Thanks and I'm already twirling!

SUSAN: Yep, I do love that RUNNING HOT cover. My favorite to date. And the bible has been started!

ZEUSLY: Glad you enjoyed the wind-up of DARK LIGHT. No, I'm never sure how I'll pull things together until I get toward the end of the book. It is always a highwire act, I'm afraid. But I always have a sense of my world and how my characters will behave in it so that helps.

LYNNE THOMAS: I told Betty Chu, the lady who raises the English Angora rabbits that star in my Harmony videos that she should start selling a stuffed version!

BRANDY: Wow! I'm always so impressed with people who take on the responsibility of homeschooling. And what a fabulous way to keep your own mental faculties in fine shape. Way to go!

TAL: Thanks for the offer. But as it happens I have taken steps to create a bible for ARCANE.

Obsidian Prey, can't wait! I have a hard time waiting for your next title! I love it when you have tie-ins to your other books, from your Hades Cup to your Curiosity Cabinet, so I'm thrilled about your Arcane Society tie-ins. Guess who is the first hold on your new title Running Hot? As far as juggling, yeah, fellow juggler here, trying to run home, work and on-line traing....it's cutting into my reading time! LOL I guess I just have to practice better time managment :).

Jayne, I don't know HOW you do it! I'm currently writing the 16th title in my series, and it's making me nuts keeping all the details straight--and I'm working in one time period! KATE DOUGLAS: Trust me, you're doing a fabulous job of keeping track of your Chanku series. You are far and away the leading author in erotic romance fiction as far as I'm concerned. You've got it all: plot, characters and intense sexuality. Nobody does it better. Congratulations.

Jayne, Thank you so much! That's very kind of you. I'll take a deep breath and admit that sometimes when I sit down to start a new book, I have to fight off a panic attack, wondering if I'll be able to remember all the details. I've got almost 30 characters now who keep moving in and out of the stories, and keeping track of everyone--and in erotic romance, that means who's slept with whom--is guaranteed to give me gray hair!
