Elizabeth G: "Feel Good" Friday Nite Flicks

Between the struggling economy, divisive politics, and deadlines (I'm finishing up a book and immediately starting another one, which means working at least six days a week for the foreseeable future), I really look forward to taking Friday nights off to watch a movie with my husband.

Here are my Top Ten "feel good" flicks for a Friday night. Most, but not all, have a strong element of humor. They all have a wonderful romance with a happy ending OF COURSE.

    1. THE HOLIDAY (2006) The cast: Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, and Eli Wallach. Written and directed by the very talented and very funny Nancy Meyers. Takes place at the holidays, but we first saw it on TV this summer, so it's fun year-round. Rated PG-13 for some profanity.

Watch for: The hilarious, laugh-out-loud telephone tag scene with Kate Winslet. Also the two wonderful child actors in my favorite "tent" scene.

    2. A GOOD YEAR (2006) The cast: Russell Crowe, Freddie Highmore, Albert Finney, and Marion Cotillard, who won the Academy Award last year for playing Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. A GOOD YEAR is based on Peter Mayle's book A Year in Provence. Rated PG-13 for some profanity.

Watch for: Everything. A superb cast. A funny and touching story. A wonderful love story. Beautiful French countryside. And wine. How can you go wrong with that combination?

    3. AUGUST RUSH (2006) The cast: Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Terrence Howard, and Robin Williams. Rated PG.

Watch for: I've already written about this movie in a separate blog earlier this summer. Very touching. Glorious music.

    4. SERENDIPITY (2001) The cast: Kate Beckinsale, John Cusack, John Corbett, Jeremy Piven, and Molly Shannon. Rated PG-13. Two people meet and fall in love. Is it chance or Fate?

Watch for: Well, I pretty much see all of John Cusack's movies, so I guess you can tell I'm a fan. (Okay, I'll confess that the "elevator" scene in the first quarter of the movie drives me nuts! And I don't mean in a good way, so I fast forward through it.)

    5. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (2002) The cast: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Michael Constantine, Christina Eleusinitos, Kaylee Vieria. Also written by Nia Vardalos, of course. Rated PG.

Watch for: Is there anyone on the planet who hasn't seen this movie? LOL If not, you're in for a real treat.

    6. MUSIC AND LYRICS (2007) The cast: Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, Brad Garrett, Kristen Johnston, and Campbell Scott. Rated PG-13.

Watch for: Everyone does their own singing and dancing, including Hugh Grant, who's actually very good in the role of an 80's "has-been" rock star. A bit of fun and fluff.

    7. THE MUMMY (1999) The cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo. Rated PG-13.

Watch for: Well, of course, with my penchant and love of all things ancient Egyptian, this movie is on my "must" own list.

    8. THE MUMMY RETURNS (2001) The cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Alun Armstrong, and Patricia Velasque. Rated PG-13.

Watch for: I actually enjoyed the second "Mummy" movie as much as the first one. A bit silly, perhaps, but just plain fun.

    9. MR. & MRS. SMITH (2005) The cast: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Vince Vaughan, Adam Brody and Kerry Washington. Rated PG-13. Sexy and funny. Also "shoot 'em-up" violent, but no "blood and gore" graphic violence.

Watch for: Since Angelina Jolie was a kick-butt heroine in the Lara Croft movies, she can more than handle herself in a fist fight with Brad Pitt. It might not be funny with an actress who couldn't hold her own against a man.

    10. ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS (1950) The cast: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Patricia Medina, and Walter Slezak.

Watch for: Well, I wouldn't watch this movie if you paid me. LOL But I couldn't think of a tenth movie for this blog, so my husband suggested the Abbott and Costello flick.

Now it's your turn to share with the rest of us here at RWQ. What are your favorite "feel good" Friday Nite Flicks?

    Cheers!
    EG

    Rush Hour

We also own several concert DVDs and I love watching The Eagles, Hell Freezes Over and Godsmack (Live).

Elizabeth - it's so funny that you have The Holiday as your #1 pick. Maria has seen that movie about 30 times. It's her go to movie for a big smile. Her 'comfort' movie, if you will.

Last Saturday night (does that count?) I watched the new Sex and the City Movie - yep, I was smiling... Especially when they celebrate Samantha's being 50 and fabulous. Love that part.

LOVED Music and Lyrics! It was fabulous.
I also enjoyed Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, which we just saw.
Everything else I've seen recently has been horror or mega-action.
But like you, I love going to the movies.
Unlike you, I go 2 or 3 times a week. LOL

    8. The Replacements

About the only time I get to see movies is when Frank and I stay in a hotel that offers one of those big-screen televisions and a huge choice of fairly recent films.

My favorite hotel movie this past year? MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY. I loved that film. Still think about it every so often.

My husband also has the DVD of The Eagles in concert. Me? I'm more likely to be listening to Zenlike music or Mozart's piano concertos, with my headphones on, of course. We're living proof that opposites attract...at least when it comes to music. lol

    EG,
Tommy Boy is a 1995 movie that stars Chris Farley, David Spade and Brian Dennehy. It's about a guy (Tommy/Chris Farley) taking a job at his dad's auto parts factory and hilarity ensues. Not only is it hilarious but it's also very sweet.

So I Married an Axe Murderer is a 1993 movie starring Mike Meyers, Nancy Travis and Anthony LaPaglia. Another hilarious film that has a very sweet love story mixed in with all the laughs. Mike Meyers plays both Charlie Mackenzie (the main character) and his Dad, Stuart Mackenzie, and his role as Stuart is so hilarious that I've watched it over and over.

As for the Eagles? The harmonies are so beautiful and relaxing. I love listening and watching the concert in hi-def on DVD is terrific.

If you get a chance, watch either Tommy Boy or So I Married An Axe Murderer, or both! They're very well worth the time.

What a great description, Marisa: "comfort" movie! If I want something happy to watch just before falling asleep, I'll watch one of my favorite scenes for a few minutes. It helps me turn off the "book" in my head. Otherwise, I end up writing half the night, in the dark, on legal pads I keep stacked by my side of the bed, and wondering if my husband can hear me scribbling away. :-)

I'm not a huge movie goer. But some of my standards are: Princess Bride, Enchanted, Lyrics and Music, Boyz in the Hood, which is sad, sad, sad, but sticks with me forever after I've watched it. I'm another huge fan of Sixteen Candles. Saw Sex and the City when my BFF and I had a girl's night a couple of weeks ago when the soul mate was out of town--enjoyed it lots--I love the female bonding aspect of that show, both the TV and movie versions.

I may have been hanging out with the Grandbabies too much lately, but I loved "the Waterhorse", "Candleshoe", "james and the Giant Peach", and "the Borrowers" (did anyone else think the police officer in this movie should be a model for all police officers? He was smart and wise and kind.)
The only adult movie i have called "feel good" lately was "Knocked Up".
Give me Barbie Faerytopia anyday. BTW-the Barbie movies are amazingly good movies for the preschool set and their moms and gmoms.

My daughter and I do a mother/daughter chick movie when we can. I love it - we have a great day out together including lunch or dinner.

As for favorites that make me feel good, who cannot laugh at Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give?

And the jane austen book club ends so satisfactorily with a good ending for everyone. My smile is on at the end.

Did anyone enjoy Under the Tuscan Sun with Diane Lane? Sorta happy/sad but a good Friday night movie for BFFs.

One last one leaves me feeling good. A little known movie called Bed of Roses staring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson. He woos her with flowers left on her doorstep and the rest follows from there.

I only listed the above 4 but they always leave me with lots of smiles, laughs or tears. Gotta love those type of movies.

As for Friday night movies with dear hubby? We watch action or horror films for him. BUT he does like the Laura Croft and the Mummy movies so we get to meet in the middle on those!

Nope, usually once I've watched a movie, I'm done. Occasionally, years later, I'll rent to re-watch - like the Bourne series or the Blade or Alien series... they're good for a weekend marathon if it's been awhile since I saw them.

My feel good movies? There are only a few

    Love actually
    Becoming Jane
    Penelope
    Ever After
    and finally

    The Pirate Movie

With the exception of Becoming Jane - which I thought was just a really beautiful movie - I can't help but to feel happy after having seen it.

You all are wondering about The Pirate Movie - It is a spoof of the Pirates of Penzance (did I spell that right?), anyway. It is silly, riddled with mistakes in continuity, and I have never been sure if the charm of it is that it had no budget, or everything was very carefully planned out. It stars Kristy McNicol and Christopher Atkins.

Whenever life is weighing on me too much - or I need a pick me up - we have a "pirate night" where we watch it a couple times. Yes, I have found other addicts as well....
