I love my husband, but oh you cats!

This is an ode to My Boys. The soul mate's been out of town a lot lately on business and will continue to be in and out for most of the fall. But that's okay, cuz I've got work to keep me busy and my cats to keep me entertained. Those of you with pets don't need me to tell you how much company they provide.

What keeps me endlessly fascinated about Boo Radley and Mojo is how much contrast is packed into each cat's personality. The Boys are litter mates and the couple who fostered them from infancy really, really wanted to keep Mojo, but they found Boo too wild. That they elected to have the kittens stay together above their own desire to keep one of them is a testament to their love of animals. I will forever bless and admire them for it.

And Boo can be wild--especially if he thinks he's in trouble. As a kitten he would literally bounce sideways off the furniture, but if you could snag him and throw him over your shoulder, then stroke and talk softly to him, he usually settled down. He never seemed quite sure of his welcome and to this day the boy's got nursing issues. He kneads and sucks on blankets, pillows and the odd fleece jacket. He's also way more methodical and cautious about acquainting himself with new surroundings than his brother. When we first introduced the Boys to the outdoors, Mojo would tear across the back yard and up the lilac tree without a thought. Boo had to sniff out every square inch around him before he could move on to the next patch.

He's a huge cat and you'd think he'd be out kicking butt and taking names. Instead, he regularly gets the crap kicked out of him by the neighborhood Toms. So, guy-like, he comes home and takes it out on his brother, because he can pounce on Mojo and know blood (his own) won't flow. But he's sweet and affectionate and has a purr like a big rig in idle. And see that tail? About the only time it isn't up in the air like that is when I take him to the vet.

Mojo has never doubted his welcome for a minute. He just assumes everyone is delirious to see him and if you're not quick enough to pet him, he'll poke his nose under your hand and toss his head back, making it slide in the motion he's going for. But, boy, if he's not in the mood to be stroked, no one can slink out from beneath your touch faster than that cat. It's like his bones dissolve and he just disappears like smoke on the wind .

He's more delicately built and a good five pounds lighter than his brother, but he's got a cocky, emphatic walk you can hear all over the house. He never gets his butt kicked--he's honed his flight reflex to a razor sharpness and is faster than a Japanese bullet train.

Smoky Joe (a nickname) loves sleeping on laps or pillows and at first wasn't as interested as Boo in spending long hours outside. He looks and often behaves like a prince, but the boy is not afraid of wet work. Once he discovered hunting, he never looked back. As a direct result of the trophies he started dragging home we had to call a moratorium on installing the cat door we bought. Those carcasses are not a pretty sight and I don't intend to find them on my rug or bed.

So these a just a few of the contradictions within each of my cats. What are some in your own pets, or what are some of the things they do that tickles you?

susan, your cats are beautiful! I have 5 cats they are all indoor cats if I put them outside they would probably have a heart attack though they do sneak out occasionally they get scared easily!
they are all different though, and have their own personalities, bud is a baby he big but scared and loves attention. purple is scared of everythink but will start purring if you just look at her, fatty just loves to try to lay on her back or she will lay on your shoes she does not like to be picked up. Little guy like to lay on legs and purs very very loudly when he does. and guido likes to live in the basement so we dont see him much he does not like the others so stays away from them and when he does venture up he is not friendly. ahh well I like them all we have had them for going on 8 years now so you kinda get attached!
also did you know you can give a free food to pets from
www.theanimalrescuesite.com if you click here they will feed some pets for free. it really has to do with humane societies, I hope you can go there and click i do it every day right before I head on over here to see whats going on!
Have a wonderful day with your babies!

    Susan,
Happy Friday! Boo and Mojo are gorgeous and look like mischief is their middle name...lol.

Juno, my 3 year old Siberian Husky is a walking-on-four-paws contradiction...lol. He loves is Mama and the HHP is disgusted by how much of a Mama's Boy Juno is...Ha! He wrestles with my 17 year old son and his friends and he's not afraid to get thrown across the family room...lol. So smart (refuses to be tricked into thinking the dogs on TV are "real"!) yet so stupid at the same time (runs into the garage mandoor constantly and can't figure out that the wood floor is slippery!). Oy, there are a million reasons why I wouldn't trade him for all the pets in the world. In case anyone wants to "see" him, you can do that at http://www.dogster.com/dogs/569439.

Thanks for the great smiles this morning Susan!

    They're beautiful, Susan!

You know, I have my son's cats here right now. Liger is a moose - a Maincoon (sp?) who weighs more than my grandson. But he's a lover not a fighter. He demands constant affection, and we love it!
Kitty is still a teenager and is constantly into something. She managed to get into the washer the other day and now it scares me to death when I do laundry. I check and recheck to ensure she's not inside.
Gremlin is the shy one. He has a terrible meow that sounds like a heavy smoker. But he's also got these huge, amazing green eyes and when he lets me pet him, I feel ultimately priveleged. LOL

I love animals, all animals, and feel blessed to have them in my life!
    Hugs,

    Lori

KRIS B, it sounds like you have your hands full! My friend Jackie is the only other person I know who has so many. She has 6 or 7 cats, but as they live mostly in her basement and outside, it's rare to even see one. You must be hip deep in cat fur. When I got the Boys it was the first time I had more than one cat at a time and I discovered that it's not just twice the fur, it's like quadruple!

DEB, Juno is beautiful! He's a pillow puppy, too. I love all the pics but particularly the one where it looks as though he's talking to you. Plus you can really see his different colored eyes in it.

LORI, you too have a houseful. Two dogs and three cats? Yowsa! I've met a couple of Maine coon cats and they tend to be sweethearts. BIG sweethearts. *g* I think Boo is big, but he's a little fella next to one of those. :)

I am currently petless due to several factors, but one of my most memorable pets was a 9 pound, solid white cat who lived to be 21 years old. She once chased a pit bull out of our yard, and the dog was terrified by her. She invited a stray kitten into our home one cold and rainy night and we had Munchkin for many years. Two weeks before her death she could still shimmy up a pine tree and sway in the wind for a while before shimmying back down, all at top speed. One day she just gave it up, and my son who had never lived without her. except for the first month of his life, cried buckets along with me.
Now I live in the PNW and have to play with the grandkids' pet cat, JB (short for Jellybelly). She's a really good cat too.

    Enjoy the purrs,
    Lynne Thomas

I have two cats. I have my big girl, Moiya, who I've had for more than 11 years. She's nearly 20 pounds and covers me from shoulder to thigh when she stretches out on me. I also have a new kitten that I got less than a month ago. His name is Ace because his stripes (he's a tabby) form a perfect Ace of Spades in the center of his shoulderblade, just at the base of his head. He's 12 weeks old and just adorable when he's not playing NinjaKitty and going BANSAI!! on your ankles (and knee caps and any trailing article of clothing--coat, bathrobe, etc). My older cat hates him with a fiery passion and there have been some adjustment issues. I love them both, though, so hopefully the situation will eventually resolve itself. So far, in this feline war, they eat each other's food, kick litter out of each other's litter box, and Ace once left a pooresent in the center of Moiya's empty wet-food saucer. Of course, she does play World Cup soccer with him, using the wall as the goal and his body as the ball, on a regular basis, so what can you do? I'm thinking it's time to try the thing where you rub one cat's scent on one and then reverse the process the following day and see if that works.

Aw, thanks, Susan. He's quite the wonderful puppy. He constantly talks to me. He hasta tell SOMEone how important he is in the family dynamic! Ha. The pictures of him in my office come from when he was a puppy and I brought him to work with me every day. My husband started working from home soon after and now Juno stays home with Dad...LOL. Whatta great blog topic. Aren't pets the best?

Loved the pictures. Your cats sound like quite the characters. I won't say they are beautiful 'cause they are guys after all. Very handsome guys though.

I'm down to two cat friends. One is a huge cat, very affectionate to me, but disappears faster than you than you can say "boo" when anyone else is in the house. The other cat is in your face bold. More than one repairman, delivery person or contractor has been amazed to have their every action closely monitored by this one small cat. He is 12 years old now and is still absolutely convinced my 6 month older black lab is his mother. Who knows...maybe his boldness is because he knows he's a dog even if the rest of us don't know it.

My absolute favorite memory, though, is of a long gone cat. One day I rushed outside at a hugh racket of dog barking and cat fight yowling. Expecting the worst, I practically collapsed in laughter to see my 20 pound very angry cat hard on the heels of a neighbors very panicked running for his life 100+ pound Newfoundland. That was the day I learned that motivated dogs CAN climb trees...and, thereafter, my cat was only allowed outside when supervised thereafter.

I love cats, but I'm allergic, so I have two small Rat Terriers. Their antics amuse me all the time. I especially like it when they do "rat runs" through the house. The slightly bigger one is the leader, and he runs around and around the dining room table with the other in hot pursuit. He will then stop all of a sudden causing the other one to crash into him. They then wrestle and play fight under the table. It's hilarious.

Aww, they're gorgeous! We have 7 kitties and feed a few strays in our neighborhood. We have one cat that can play ice hockey (Well, he plays with ice, catching it and throwing it), he's the same one that likes to go for a walk on a leash and can open our cabinet doors. We have another that is very timid and shy but likes to "talk". If she's spooked she hides in our Daughters bath tub. And she only likes to go eat with a buddy. We have another (my sweetie) who will stand up on her hind legs like a child to be picked up. And as crazy as they are, I love each and every one of them. *G*

LYNNE, ah, but you have grandkids. I might even trade my kitty-boys in for one of those. *g* (Don't tell em I said so)

TINA,I LOVE the name Ace! I have to brace my back when I pick up Boo and he weighs about 16 pounds. You must have to wear a brace to pick up Moiya! That's a big girl! And boy, it can be tough introducing a new cat into a house that another has ruled forever, can't it?

KRIS and TERRY S: I, too, visit Animal Rescue. I do the entire gamut of those click-to-give sites: going across the tabs at the top from Feed the Hungry, to Breast Cancer, to Child Health, to Literacy, to Rainforest, to Animal Rescue. As you guys said, it takes only minutes and is a win-win for everyone.

TERRY, love the cat chasing the dog up the tree story! It's amazing where attitude can take a smaller animal. My last cat, Styx, was very territorial and kept our corner of the block cat-and-dog free. He never chased a dog up a tree though. You must have laughed yourself silly. :>

Lou, isn't it a kick watching them play together? The Boys are my first more-than-one-pet-at-a-time cats, and I'll never go back. I didn't realize how social they were until I got the two at once. Even with their personalities becoming more different as they get older, they always spend part of the day curled up together or playing grab-ass around the house.

BRANDY, seven??? Yowsa! Love the ice playing kittie. One of my brothers used to have a snaggle-toothed persian who would sleep on top of his boat out in the driveway. When it snowed, he'd just stay right where he was until there was nothing but a little hump under the blanket of snow. Mojo likes the cold and snow, too, and his coat looks its best when the weather's cold. Usually, he looks like Rastifarian kitty, because his long fur separates not in dreds, exactly, but in scraggly little parts. I think he's got some Russian Blue in him, which means he was meant for colder climes than Seattle. He really likes it in Eastern Washington where we have a mountain home. (Not to mention there's good lizard hunting there in the summer!)

I have serious "cat envy," after reading all your posts! :-)

We had our beloved Merlin for 16 years and we still miss him to this day. Merlin was one of the world's great cats. Our son was 8 years old when we went to pick out a kitten for him. He picked up the runt of the litter, who immediately began to purr. The woman selling him for $5.00 said: "Oh, that's the 'loving' kitty." No truer words have ever been spoken.

With wonderful memories and a tear,

EG: Ohhhhh. It's so hard when a pet dies. Not to mention tough finding a $5 kitty these days. :) Seattle has such stringent spay/neuter laws that you no longer find kids with a box full of kittens outside your grocery store. About a week after Styx died I went down to the pound to just sit with the cats because I was feeling so lost without mine. I wasn't planning on bringing one home with me that day but I got to talking to a young woman who worked there. We talked about what I'd ideally like (2 medium-hair male litter mates) and she told me there were about 30 calls for each available kitten. But maybe because I sat there for a couple of hours and talked cats with her, she said if I saw one online that I was interested in to give her a call and she'd skip me to the top of the list.

Then about a week or so later I got an email from her. (I'd told her I was a writer and she went to the trouble of tracking me down online) She said there were 2 cats in foster care that fit my criteria and asked if I'd like to meet them. That, of course, was my Boys. I met them, fell in love, then had to wait an additional few weeks for Mojo to reach 2 1/2 pounds so they could neuter him--at which time I got to take them home. They didn't replace Styx. But they sure helped fill the hole in my heart his death left behind.

What a beauty Mojo is! I have two cats--at least I think I do. I heard a panicked yowl earlier today and went looking, but could only find Sethra. I think Aliera is just lurking and being unlikely, as the one time she actually did get in trouble (strung up by one paw), she kept on yelling till I cut her down. (I just heard the yowl again--couldn't see any cat inside or outside. I'm beginning to wonder if it's somebody's AOL log-in sound.)

Mine are half-sisters, I think, as they look different enough to have different sires. They are half meezer and half gentleman caller. Both looked quite Siamese as kittens, but they have darkened to a cappuccino color.

Sethra the Fluffy Bimbo (Fluffbucket, Cat, answers to "Get down from there!" and "You rotten meezer!") is a beautiful fluffy creature with exactly two brain cells and a propensity for falling off shelves. Every day she sheds enough fur to knit a fair-sized kitten from.

Aliera of the Many, Many Sharp White Teeth (Backup Cat, answers to "STOP THAT!" as well as to "You rotten meezer!") is a short-haired striped tabby who is all love and affection to anyone of the male persuasion who crosses my threshhold but persistently bites ME! Both are pretty good cuddlers: Aliera likes to lie on top of me with her butt in my face and massage my sore knee (doesn't do much good); Sethra likes to put her paws on my face and suck on my nightgown or blanket. Aliera usually wins the cat spats; but Sethra dominates when food is in question.

Before I got these, I had a beautiful meezer mix kitten called Lilith; but a housemate's dog killed her. She was truly the perfect kitten--loving, intelligent, and full of fun and friendliness. I miss her still.

Your Boys are beautiful, or should I say handsome. I have tried to convince FlyBoy that I need a kitten very badly but he always says "NO"! Some dumb thing about my allergies and hives- give me a break. What are a few sneezes and bumps in the grand scheme, right. I think a cat would be a great pal for when he is deployed.
I currently have a beta fish, named Vicious (V for short), and he is no ordinary fish. You might think a fish is boring but... V can do tricks! He leaps out of the water, does flips for food, buries his body in the rocks, creates tunnels in the rocks, and he will even let you pet him. According to my neighbor, when we are out of town V will mope and play dead. He almost got flushed once because he would not move. Okay, now you think I'm nuts but he really is a unique fish.
I'm still pushing for a cat though.

Lovely cats! They both look personality plus.

I have the jealousy sisters: Millie Dog and Mango Cat. This evening Mango had managed to be alone with me for several hours (I didn't notice Millie was shut outside my door) and when the two came face to face again, Millie Dog gave me what looked like a sweet smile. I looked away and heard the cat cry out. Looked back and Millie was "kissing" the cat (these are sweet little licks). Looked away and the cat cried. Back and there were more "kisses." Too bad for Millie I pulled a doubletake on her and caught the nip that was coming between all those smooches.

These fur babies give me so much pleasure and entertainment--even if I do have to be stern on occasion. "Millie, you naughty girl, tonight you will only get one and a half treats instead of two."

TALPIANNA, Sethra and Aliera are darling! Loved the knit a fair-sized kitten tale--boy can I appreciate that! And so glad Aliera showed up again. It's scary when they suddenly change their habits and you have to keep reminding yourself not to fear the worst until they show up again.

BRANDY, I went to ittybittykitty committee.blogspot.com and all I can say is AWWWW All those kittens are so adorable!

ANNA, what is Flyboy thinking, trying to protect you??? *G* And a trick performing fish is nothing to sneeze at, though it's probably best you don't introduce a cat into that household, or V will be Vicious no more--he'll be lunch.

JAYNE, oh sure. See my pair of cats and raise me full house puppies! But you're not competitive or anything. ;>

So, WSTRIDGERUNNER, is your Captain Morgan named after the pirate or the rum? And as for spoiled, as you can read here, you're not alone!

STELLA, you rigid disciplinarian, you! Cutting Millie's treats down by a quarter? That's showing her! :)

So basically, it sounds like we're all a bunch of pushovers for our pets. And I'm thinking that works for us. Cuz like I said, folks. I don't need to tell you all how much comfort and company they are!

OH your cats are so beautiful. My first baby Dusty was a big girl but she loved me and only me. Was very protective of the apartment. When she was five I brought Sammy home. I thought the first weekend Dusty was going to have Sam for lunch. But they grew to love each other. Dusty has been gone for over 3yrs now and I still miss her.

Sammy though 11 still thinks he is a kitten but he has never really outgrown being the shy one of my two. Dusty was the dominate cat and Sammy let her. LOL My parents are convinced I don't have a cat cause Sam hides until company is gone. LOL
