JAYNE PRESENTS: KATE DOUGLAS and CHANKU

Jayne, here, to introduce guest blogger KATE DOUGLAS. The latest in her sensational Wolf Tales series is out this month. If you like paranormal erotica, Kate is your author. No one, but no one, does it better.

By the way, to celebrate the release of her new book Kate will be giving away five books — or a cute stuffed wolf, your choice — to five lucky folks who post comments to this blog. Winners will be announced here late Tuesday afternoon. They will get to choose from Sexy Beast III, IV or V or Wolf Tales V, VI, or VII. Or the stuffed wolf!

And now, please welcome Kate Douglas:

The thirteenth book in my Wolf Tales series—counting the novellas—is coming out this month. I'm currently writing number seventeen, and it's hit me that when this series finally comes to a close—when it finally does—and I have to put my beloved Chanku away, I will probably need therapy....

To begin at the beginning, Wolf Tales started as an online serial for a small publisher called Changeling Press. Kensington Publishing picked up the series to launch their new erotic imprint, Aphrodisia, and suddenly I had to come up with stories to fill books, not short little vignettes for readers to download every six weeks.

So far, my characters have been wonderfully accommodating—all thirty of them, at this point, each with his or her own voice, set of issues, individual needs and desires... Why is it I can juggle connecting plot lines from one book to another and keep my entire pack of sexy shapeshifters straight in my head, but I can't remember why I walked into a room? Scary stuff, but the Chanku, named after an actual species of Tibetan wolf, appear to be much more organized than I am. They definitely lead more interesting lives, which is probably why I prefer my fantasy world to the real one most of the time. The scary thing is, my fantasy world often IS more real to me than, well...this one.

My current book, Wolf Tales VII, a Romantic Times Magazine Top Pick, brings all the Chanku together at uber-alpha Anton Cheval's mountain home where they try to discover who is targeting the females and young among them.

I wanted to post an excerpt (Jayne said keep it clean—not easy! I do write erotic romances, after all...) that would give you an idea how my Chanku think. Manda is one of my favorites—a complex character caught as a young woman in "mid-shift." She was kept in a cage for twenty-five years, a freakish combination of human and wolf, believing all that time she was cursed by God. Allen was one of her keepers, a cruel technician who took great delight in torturing and tormenting her. In this scene, Manda is finally a whole woman, fully aware she was not cursed and not a freak of nature. Allen has tried to recapture her, but as a Chanku shapeshifter and a self-confident alpha bitch, the young woman who was once a freak has shifted to her wolf form and turned the tables on her tormentor:

This time, she aimed for his throat.

She didn't miss. He went down without a sound. She ripped into the soft flesh beneath his jaw and then backed away from the spurting blood. His eyes were open, his mouth gasping like a fish out of water.

Manda shifted. Standing tall and proud, naked and perfect, she stared down at the dying man and felt nothing but disgust. "Sorry, Allen. I bet that hurts. Remember me? The little freak you loved to torture?"

He blinked and stared at her, dying but still aware.

"That's right. I'm Manda. Hard to imagine, isn't it? Not a helpless, deformed little creature now, am I?" She squatted down and looked directly into his eyes. "I want to be the last thing you see before you reach hell, Allen."

He blinked and Manda rose to her full height. She waited and watched while he bled out, until his chest no longer heaved in search of breath, until the shimmer in his dead eyes turned dull.

It took much longer than she'd expected.

It took hardly any time at all.
Hard to believe Manda's really a sweet young woman, but she definitely had issues with Allen. I have full first chapter excerpts of all my Wolf Tales (including the Sexy Beast novellas, which are also part of the series) posted at www.katedouglas.com/eroticromance if you'd like to take a look, but I am curious about something. If you read erotic romance, what's your favorite genre? Do you prefer contemporary, historical or paranormal? Personally, I find it easier to accept the really sexy stories when the entire world is fantasy, but I'd love to hear your take on this.

    Sincerely,
    Kate Douglas

    Powerful scene, Kate!

I also find reality a little less "real" than my made-up worlds! LOL!

Awesome excerpt, Kate! I think this series is so original and kudos to you for keeping it going on :) We all look up to you!

I read all genres of romance and erotic. I think my favorite genre of erotic to read probably crosses between historical and suspense (neither of which I write, though I do incorporate suspense often.)
But I enjoy any genre if the storyline captures me :) I definitely love a big juicy plot with my hot scenes.

    Great post. Love the cover.

I prefer the paranormal. There is just something about fantasy that is sexy

Thank you, Belinda! LOL...I understand completely. I spend a lot more time in my fantasy world, that's for sure!

Thank you, too, Shelli. I agree with the "big juicy plot and hot scenes" part! If a story catches me, I don't really care what genre it is, but I find myself picking up paranormal more often than not, erotic or otherwise. I love world building, and prefer it in the pnr. even to S/F/

Cheryl--in fantasy, you throw the rules out the window. It gives the author the freedom to write what she wants, and the reader the freedom to let their imagination fly. I love that!

With me, there's no contest, I love the paranormal best of all, whether for erotic romance or any other romance... or non-romance or movie or... lol... and I'm with you, the imaginary worlds feel more real than reality sometimes!! They're certainly far more interesting.

The Chanku just keep growing on me more and more with each book too, I'm totally hooked! :)

    Blogger Kate Douglas said...

Thank you, murrmaiyd! The Chanku have become more real to me with each book I write, but I love the email from readers who ask me how the babies are doing! That tells me the characters are definitely hitting home with some folks!

Kate, I also prefer paranormal. Of course I love everything you write (and I think I have it all). My favorites are the shapeshifters, like the Chanku stories, and MaryJanice Davidson's Wyndham Werewolves, and Cheyenne McCray's Wonderland series. I also can't live without Lynsay Sands' Argeneau books. (As a widow with no children I have a lot of time on my hands, so I read alot.) Thank you for giving us such rich fantasy!

Hi Kate! I LOVE your Chanku world and was wondering, do they just pop up as you are writing or do you sketch them out? And are there times when they say something or do something that is unexpected? Are there any of them that you are most like?

And mahalo nui loa for sharing them and their world with us!

    Hi Kate,

Wonderful excerpt. So good to see Manda become the powerful Chanku she was meant to be. I loved her and Bay's story. The way he treated her was beautiful.

I too like erotic paranormal but I'm not too picky about genre as long as the story is well written.

Great excerpt Kate! I'm more into the paranormal genre as any other. I love reading about the Chanku and as you will be very sad to see it end. So hopefully in won't.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for giving me that kick I needed to start on my own fantasy. I love the roll playing and as you, get lost in that world with the characters that are a part of me.

Thank you for sharing the Chanku with us. Looking forward to the future ones.

    Hi Kate,
Congrats on your upcoming release. I like all genres of erotic romance. I do agree that it is easier to accept these sexy stories when paranormal elements are featured. Sometimes you just want to swept away by the story and paranormals definitely achieve that.

Thanks Kate for the powerful scene between Manda and Allen. I've enjoyed your Chanku series of books.

I read all genres and enjoy each for different reasons. I like stories with paranormal wolf shifters because I really enjoy the pack dynamics. I also like that paranormals allow us to explore new worlds, new creatures and powers beyond human abilities. And I love the surprise element of these stories, you can't count on all your years of school in science and biology to guide you. Almost anything goes.

I enjoy historicals because it's fun to see women and men playing within societal rules and watching what happens to them when they step outside. And behind closed doors I don't think sex has changed much with the passing of time.

And with contemporary I'm not so concerned with setting up the timeline or world building. I just want to get right down to business and see the characters relate to each other.

I prefer the fantasy erotic romances, particularly the paranormal (vamps, lycans etc). I love the Wolf Tales books, and by reading the Sexy Beast books just for Kate's stories, I have been introduced to other excellent authors as well.

Hey Kate...One of your long time fans here. I read erotic romance across all genres. The Wolf Tales have been a particular favorite of mine since 2006 and truly unique.

I'd like to see the Chanku series go on for as long as it doesn't feel forced for you. I do love the fantasy world you build and love that I can immerse myself as though it's real. (Now that's scary;) Any author who can draw her readers in like that is golden.

If you wanted to write in any other erotic genre and the quality was the same as the Wolf Tales, I'm there....Nancy:)

I'm always looking forward to the next story of yours to read, but Mik, AJ and Tala will always be my favorite. Keep up the incredible work and when this story line ends we may all need therapy. I'm also sure that there will be another world just waiting for you to explore and reveal to us.

Hey Kate! Wow, I'm glad I'm not too late to join the discussion. GREAT excerpt. Manda is a great character and yeah, considering her history with Allen, her violence was understandable (at least to me).

You always have such great covers for your books! This one is no exception. I've read most of the Chanku books.

I enjoy the kind of books that blend genre (paranormal/historical, urban fantasy, with elements of sci-fi and romance blended, etc.) I don't have a problem believing when fantastical things happen in stories, as long as the writer commits to it happening and adds enough detail to make the world believable.

If they do that,it doesn't matter where it's set: historical, contemporary or future -- just as long as the characters fit into the fiction world.

My goodness! Get a few hours' sleep and the place goes wild!

Phyllis--you read some of the same authors I do. Hope Eeyore, Tigger and the wolf are getting along!

Hi Jan--I go into a story knowing my characters but not the plot. I let my characters tell me the story as I'm writing, so EVERYTHING that happens is a surprise to me. That's probably why I'd rather write than do anything else...except maybe read. Thanks for your post.

Leslie, Manda has been a joy to write. Her story was so horrible, but she definitely triumphs...but Bay is the perfect match for her. She's in the book I'm writing now, too: Wolf Tales IX. Thank you.

Robbie, good luck with your own work. I'm hoping the series will keep going, too, as I want to reach the point where I can tell the next generation's stories! My editor and I were joking about fitting the numerals for "Wolf Tales XXXIIIV" on the cover--may need a new name before that!

Danie88, thank you! I will always be a paranormal fan.

Thank you, Jane. For me, it's the fantasy world--if I can get caught up in that, I can accept anything so long as it fits that world.

Sue A--you're right. Romance never changes, but the rules do. As long as the story grabs me, I'm going to enjoy it! I'm glad you liked Manda's scene. She's a really fun character to explore, and she continues to grow and gain more confidence. In Wolf Tales VIII, she actually stands up to Anton! That one comes out next summer.

Hi Arsena--my editor will love hearing that you're finding new authors in the Sexy Beast books! I need to tell her what you wrote. Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you, Anonymous. I do my best!

Good morning, Danny! Thank you. Remember, though...Chanku are NOT werewolves! They're shapeshifters. Just ask Anton!

Thank you so much, Nancy! I can see the series going on for a long, long time. Just hope my publisher agrees!

Hi Inez--I was just sick about missing RAW, but you know how it is...family ALWAYS comes first! The hard part for me is that readers feel like family, too...I was wondering who won the bag! Do hope you enjoyed the books.

    Hi Kate,

I read Erotic Romance but do not have any favorite genre. It depended on my mood at the time. But I found that I can accept a lot of so called "taboo" issues in paranormal setting. Because if it is historical or contemporary, I tend to analyze too much into the situation.

I have one question. Do you foreseen the end of Chanku storyline? Not that I want it to end, I think there are a lot story left to tell. Just checking.

DFender/Deb--thank you. Let me know if you read any, what you think. I always suggest that new readers to the series start with the very first book, which introduces the Chanku world.

Good morning, Lori! Thank you so much for letting me take over your blog today! Talk about intense--your urban fantasy series DEFINES intense! Love the stories and I'm waiting impatiently on the next "Servant."

Hi Faye--thank you. That RT Top Pick REALLY blew me away. Definitely didn't expect it for my "uber-sexy" series!

Thank you, Chris--Wolf Tales VII should be out in a couple weeks. OR, you might win a copy! I've got five books (or wolves) to give away. LOL...I told Jayne I'd give away wolves in case any readers who won weren't into my over-the-top erotic romances!

    Hi Kate!

The first erotic novel I ever read was a paranormal, so I sort of have a soft spot in my heart for them. Lately I've found myself reading erotic historicals and I have to say that I'm really enjoying learning some of the not-so-proper customs of the Regency and Victorian eras! I guess I like to read erotica in any form, as long as it's written really well...and has a beautiful love story to tell.

Beth, I'll take the snow, or rain. At this point, I'd even take fog. Our drought is horrible up here! So glad to hear you're enjoying the series. Thank you.

Zita, thank you! I love hearing that!

Hi Crystal! Thank you for stopping by! Crystal's in my last Sexy Beast, SBV, with her really fantastic story, "In Ice," which starts her new Aphrodisia series. (as hot as Crystal writes, you NEED the ice!)

Love to hear that, Dinah. I really enjoy good dialogue, as long as I can hear the characters' voices. And you're right...a good romantic sexy scene never hurts, either.

Crystal D--this is a great blog. It's one of the few I read on a regular basis. There's always something fun going on, but I like having my favorite authors all trapped in one spot where they can't get away! (Mik, AJ and Tala are my favorites, too, though Stefan and Anton's dialogue is always fun to write!)

Karey-Lyn--thank you! I do hope you enjoy WTVII. This is the one where I was bawling as I was writing the ending, feeling like a complete idiot! (Don't worry, it's definitely a happy one!) I tend to get a bit involved in my writing... :-)

tetewa--do hope you'll give the series a shot. Wolf Tales are very sexy, but they're also very romantic stories with a world all their own.

Michelle, I agree on the "world building." It's got to be believable and consistent. I think you'll like seeing what's happened to Manda in the new book!

Hi Mel--what? You're not stalking me? I am SO disappointed...thank you for posting. Hope you like the new one.

(sheesh...just checked to make sure I'm answering everyone, and realized I'm the queen of the exclamation points this morning. Maybe it's too much coffee? Sorry...I'm not really sqeeee-ing with ever note I write. Well, not too much, anyway...)

Hi May--what you say is interesting. I get email from a lot of readers who say they NEVER read stories with same sex relationships or group sex scenes, but that the Chanku world make those things work within the context of the story. That's where I think the paranormal genre lends itself to erotic romance--once the world is established, the reader is more willing to find things they don't usually like to read, acceptable. With contemporary, I'm a real prude in my reading...I think it's because the story is too immediate and real--I need the fantasy to make it all work. Thanks for posting!

clwine--when I discovered paranormal, it was like an entirely new world (many worlds, actually) opened up for me. I wonder if it's because I was a science fiction fan when I was younger? Maybe our brains are wired to prefer the impossible!

Cheryl M--I think you nailed it when you said you can read almost anything when it's got a beautiful love story. When I look at my "keeper shelves," every single title is a strong romance with a "happily ever after" ending. Those are the stories that take me where I want to be when I'm reading.

I shouldn't be surprised to see you here. It makes sense to me to find you on a site hosted by authors on my autobuy list. I agree with many of the comments here. I find that I'm more likely to read erotic romance with a paranormal story line. I will read historical erotic romance but tend to have a much higher likelihood of getting tossed out of the story by historical inaccuracies or anachronisms. I find my reaction to Victorian/Regency erotic romance is forever colored by the ick factor of finding "My Secret Life" in the libary carrel in need of cleaning while closing one evening.

My favorite genre is paranormal cause it appears to be almost normal to me. I wouldn't mind meeting or knowing a shapeshifter as long as I wasn't the target. ;-) I love the way the paranormal genre allows the author to go out on that limb of believeability and sometimes match where I can go. Kate's Chanku males are hot and reading about them pumps up my blood pressure which old people like me need lol. If I was lucky enough to be chosen to receive something, I want a wolf. I have all of Kate's books and the latest one, WT7 is on order and coming soon. I do have books of the other genre also; for the record. Mo

Hi Kate and welcome to Quills. Super blog and gripping excerpt. Now I'm off to buy a couple of books:)

I'm an "everything" reader but believe erotica works perfectly with paranormal stories.

I love your Wolf Tales series, keep them coming.

Love the excerpt. I'll certainly have to pick up some of your stuff!
As for your question, I would order it paranormal, historical, then contemporary. I like them all, but there is definitely something about combining it with my love of anything fantasy that's enticing...

Welcome, Kate! I've been meaning to read your work, but must admit I can only handle limited amounts of erotica -- mostly because there's that famous fine line between pain and pleasure, and I am definitely pained at re what some authors seem to think is pleasurable... I hope that makes as much sense as it did in my head. Paranormal all the way!!!

Kimberley--I'm the same...all those are so much fun!

Jayne--thank you so much for the invite. I was away most of the day and it looks like the blog exploded!

DrkCherry--the fantasy/paranormal world is the perfect setting for erotic romance. To me it really lends itself to taking things " a step beyond."

Hey Eva--bet it's REAL cold there right now--it was almost seventy today when I went to town. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Anonymous--my feelings exactly. But face it, bad erotica often reads like porn, not something any of us want.

    Thanks, Cathy!

Thanks, Mo--this lady is my second set of eyes. She can spot a typo at fifty paces and I really value her opinion. Unfortunately, I also have to put up with her bs, but I'll take it.

Thank you, Stella. I must admit, I'm having a wonderful time with my series. Still occasionally have to pinch myself and make sure it's all real. :-)

BGoddess7245--we're planning another trip to the Pacific Northwest sometime next summer. If you're on my newsletter, I'll announce the schedule then. Thank you.

Kansassweet43--Manda REALLY needed to get her pound of flesh. She had a horrible childhood/young adulthood because of this guy. It felt great to write that scene.

Stazia/Peaches! What? No aloha? Hugs to you, too, m'dear! Thanks for coming by.

MsTori830: Thank you. Manda has grown more than just about any character in the story, except maybe Keisha. Now she's one tough lady...though you'd never guess it just looking at her. I love writing the female characters in this series--having a matriarchal society lets me have a lot of fun.

    Thank you, Night Critter. :-)

Cory--I often wonder how many of us who love paranormal started out reading science fiction. I know that was my first love.

Thank you, Larena--wasn't sure what to post--I had to keep it for a general audience. I'm glad you liked it.

Cherie J--I'm the same way when I write them--it's the escape factor.

Anonymous--check out my website at www.katedouglas.com/eroticromance for first chapter excerpts of all the stories. It also gives you the order to read them in, if you decide they're for you.

ChrisTina--not all erotic romance has BDSM in it--mine doesn't. The sex scenes tend to be very graphic and may include more than two people, but I don't do the pain thing, either. You can get a good idea of what the stories are like by reading excerpts on my website.

Thank you, Susan, and thanks to all of you who "own" the blog for allowing me to come play!

    Amelia, you're not alone.

Linda B, so glad you stopped by. This will teach me to take off for the day, but I had to go at least start my Christmas shopping. I ended up buying one birthday gift, one Christmas gift and that's it. Guess I'll need to go back, but the stores were pretty quiet considering how close to Christmas it is.

I'll read almost any genre as long as it's well written and cohesive. For me, reading is about escapism and I've often found it easiest to sink into a world that is created entirely by the author. Often times with a contemporary or historical novel I find myself comparing what the author has written to what I know about that time period or current events...

That being said, I love the intimacy of characters and story arcs that connect across several books, no matter what the time period or universe the characters inhabit :)

For erotic romance, absolutely paranormal is my favorite - just embrace that it's entirely fantasy and go with it ;)

I love your writing period! It isn't just the love scenes and steamy scenes, it is the emotional ways they express themselves. It is also the fact that they look beyond "skin deep". Most people don't and the people that actually do are worth the time and effort. Those who don't look below are missing out on a lot! Thanks for being such a brilliant author and bringing forth your wonderful tales. (No pun intended, lol).

I adore the Wolf Tales series! My favorite character is still Keisha from the first volume. I love the way her spirit heals and is freed by love.

    7:28 PM
    Blogger Kate Douglas said...

Thank you, Danielle...I definitely agree with you that the people who look beyond "skin deep" are worth the effort. I feel the same way about my characters. They ignore color, race, age and even gender, and they love completely, without those barriers, with honor and integrity toward the pack. Every single one of my characters is someone I'd like to know in real life.

Hi Erin--thanks for stopping by, and I'll admit, Keisha is definitely a favorite, though the one I really love to write is her mate, Anton Cheval. He tries so hard to hang on to his uber-alpha status, and Keisha nails him every time. I hope you're writing is going well!

I always pick up a paranormal book first with shifters as my favorite. Do still read contemporary and historical especially if written by an author I follow. Did origianlly start with SF, loved Andre Norton books for years. Now with the internet have found a whole new group of authors. I plan on picking up the new WolfTale as soon as available. Maybe I will be organized enough to preorder on Amazon.

    Hi Kate,

Thank you, kh--that top pick totally boggled my mind. It wasn't all that long ago that RT wouldn't even review erotic romance, much less stories with "same sex" romances. I was really thrilled with it.

lindseye--you can say "organized" with a straight face? If you do read the series, I suggest you start with the first one, as the stories are definitely connected and follow a time line.

Hi Danita--thanks for stopping by. Wasn't Lori's weekend wonderful? I think that's the most fun I've ever had at a conference anywhere. My jaws were tired from gabbing by the time we finally left. I hope I can make it next year.

    Kate,
Your books are wonderful and I really like historical as well as fantasy with a little contemporary thrown in. Not much help sorry.
It really depends on the mood. The historical need to teach me about that time and place and it makes me want to visit. Just a thought.

I like a mixture of paranormal and contemporary. I want to escpe my everyday life and read about someone else's. That's what makes a book good. They have to be halfway believable also.

Welcome to RWQ, Kate! Great having you here. Intriguing excerpt that will send me off to the bookstore... again.

Moonlit Haven: Thank you! I'm with you. I love getting lost in a good book.

Alli: Thank you! You need to read Sexy Beast V, Chanku Wild, to find out what happens next to Mei and Oliver, and they're both featured in the new book, Wolf Tales VII.

Anonymous 9:11: I occasionally enjoy erotic historical romances, but generally with a little paranormal thrown in. Sharon Page and Elizabeth Amber come to mind. They both write really great historical settings, but with the paranormal edge.

Anonymous 10:00--no matter what the setting, it's got to be believable. If the world the author creates doesn't work, then the story loses my interest really fast.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing your blog! I agree--writing sensual paranormal takes a certain talent. My husband thinks it's my warped mind...is that what we need? :-)

Jo, love it! Especially the comment about "the other half." I have quite a collection of wonderful thank you notes from husbands and "significant others." I know....TMI!

Ooh, this is easy! I much prefer hotter erotic romance to be either paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy or historical. Too often when I'm reading straight contemporary, the stories feel a little dirty to me. :-) Of course, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I often like the over the top sexual attraction or taboo subjects that just doesn't seem realistic when I'm reading contemporary set fiction.
