    JAYNE EXPLAINS HER THREE NAMES

Okay, I'll admit I'm new to the series concept. Sure, I've done a few trilogies over the years -- one of which, the Lavinia & Tobias series -- was not exactly supposed to stop at three books. But that's sort of what happens when no one buys the books. Publishers tend to lose interest. Ahem. That story, however, belongs in another blog, the one in which I discuss my numerous near-death experiences in the writing business.

As I was saying, I came late to the series thing. When I did decide to jump in, I chose a spectacularly awkward way in which to go about it. I opened up the Arcane Society series under two of my names Amanda Quick and Jayne Ann Krentz, and then, just to complicate my life, I decided to add my Jayne Castle world.

The most recent novel in my Arcane series, THE PERFECT POISON, is on sale now and I've been doing some local Seattle area signings. I'm getting hit with the same question, again and again. Why do you write Arcane under three names?

It's a logical question, of course. But I'm afraid the answer is complicated. The bottom line is that, by the time I arrived at this point in my career I had fired up three different writing landscapes: historical, contemporary and futuristic. In effect, I have established three different audiences. And until I created Arcane there was not much overlap. Giving up one of my names would have meant giving up an entire world and the readers who went with it.

Yes, if I had it to do it over again, I would have stuck with one name. But what's done is done. So I have concocted a brilliant rationale for my three names, one that makes it look like a shrewd, well-thought out career choice rather than the result of a lot of bumbling and pratfalls along the way.

My explanation for my three names: This way, when you pick up one of my books, you know immediately which world you'll get.

You see? In life it isn't the mistakes that matter, it's how you recover.

I will admit that it would be nice to know I'm not the only writer out there who wound up with three names. Can you think of anyone else you enjoy reading who struggled with the same situation?

I'm a fan of certain Steven King books, and one of my favorites is The Talisman (writing as Peter Straub). I really have no idea what his thoughts are on his multiple personas... though it may make for some interesting googling later. :)

Personally, I like the fact that you use three names. I am generally an organized person (or was before motherhood, at least), and you've done the work for me so I know which books take place in which time period.

Oh, and I can't wait to hear/meet you at the "Romance Extravaganza" next weekend! I have put off buying your book to get a signed copy, and I can't wait to dig into it. :D

No, Jayne, I can't think of another writer who is actively writing under three names. But you do the job with such panache and efficiency that it seems absolutely the right thing for you to do.

Your explanation about having a different name for each world makes perfect sense and it works.

    Cheers,

    Hi Jayne,

Nora Roberts also writes as J.D. Robb but aside from that I cannot think of any other author who writes under other names. You are quite unique in that sense and the reason behind it is logical.

Hope you can do another booksigning in the East Side.

Is it a struggle Jayne? You are an amazingly prolific writter- you mean it's not effortless?? you make it look that way.

As a reader, I came late to the series idea too. Something about wanting "completeness" or "security" at the end of a story- not a depressing soap opra I think. I have found that that is not always the case, tho , and it's comforting to come back again and again to a favorite world.

I am really sorry that I came late to the Lavina and Tobias series- maybe one more timely purchaser would have made the diffrence, lol. I can not even tell you how much I love those charicters!! I want more- I really , really do--- Please?

Oddly enough, I resisted reading those books for a long time- something about how they were presented was off-putting- I expected to dislike and disrespect the charicters and disapprove of the story line. I couldn't have been more wrong. Never judge a book by it's back cover!!

I have finally learned that you are never tacky or trashy. I often have a fondly amusing mental image of Lavina sitting on the floor behind her desk, leaning to pick locks- "honeing her craft" as I read your books that just get better and better- and I imagine you to be just like her.

Truthfully, the whole paranormal thing, and especially the futuristic, was a BIG leap for me, but I have found that no matter what the setting, I adore your charicters and story telling. I am now a full-fledged fan of all three of your persona's.

Actually, I find the historical and the futuristic stories to be the most simmilar to each other as to the "feeling " I have when reading them. Even tho each are distinctive , I think that there is enough of the same "voice" in all of them for the continuity needed in a series that spans them all. I have to say, that I never like series ( especially with over-lapping charicters) that are written by diffrent authors- just doesn't work for me.

I am still trying to come up with a good enough reason to drive up to you next book signing from Portland. I was going to do it for my birthday present to myself, as it is the next day. It's a tad hard to justify tho, when My husband just gave an amazon kindle (early) for my birthday. Of course, the first thing I did was read "Perfect Poison" ( I felt very emotinoal reading that btw -loved it). He gave it to me so I would quit overflowing the house with books. What to do, what to do....

There are other authors that I love lol, but I can't think of any who put out three books a year --under one name -or three. You just might be struggling alone, Jayne.

Many years ago, either Dorothy Eden or Victoria Holt wrote under a number of names. I remember as a young single mother being THRILLED to discover that two of my favorite authors -- Jayne Ann Krentz and Stephanie James -- were one and the same!!! Your delightful voice rings so clearly through all your works that I'm sure we, your loyal readers, will have no problem introducing your alter-egos to people who make the jump from one genre to the other -- you make sure they have a soft and warm landing. Besides, while YOU may be too busy writing to brag, smart readers [or do I mean "those who have been reading for a while"?] know you INVENTED the futuristic and paranormal genre with Crystal Flame, Shield's Lady, and Sweet Starfire!!! Five star reads all!!!
Loving your work --- Chris H.

Jayne, I LOVE your three different worlds, so I'm glad you did things that way. When I'm in the mood for a historical, I know to pick up Quick!
    Contemp? JAK.
I haven't read as many of the others, but from what I've read, they were fantastic.
And in fact, one of your early category books was given to me to get me hooked on romance! So probably without you, *I* wouldn't have a career! (It was a combination of your books, Linda Howard's and Linda Lael Miller's that was included in the first set of books "forced" on me. LOL. I owe my sister big-time for that!)

I'm just glad to hear I'm not the only one making missteps along the way. But whatever missteps you feel you've made, I'm sure readers (me inclued) are just thrilled that you're still giving us great books to read!

I appreciate knowing what world I'm visiting when I pick up a particular book/category, so I like the different names. Having issues getting the newest Quick title (believe it or not, several local stores do not have it on their shelves; what are they thinking?) but I know I will have it in my hot little hands before the weekend.

I'll read your books whatever name you use!

There are authors out there Victoria Holt, M C Beaton come to mind; I like the fact that you write under different names! Not all readers cross genres, some are specific historicals and would not cross over that genre if their life depended on it (*g*) and so, with your 3 names it's easy to suggest books to meet the readers needs. I know several vampire book lovers who I got hooked on your futuristic series (I'm so bad!) and several historical readers are now following along with your contemporary Arcane series (see? I'm very bad LOL)!!

No interest in the "Lavinia and Tobias" series??!!! Say it ain't so!!! I loved Lavinia, except for the Egyptian thing, she reminded me a lot of Amelia Peabody.

I have most of your books under all of your names (there ARE only four, aren't there?) and love your voice and your world in each one. However, I have you to thank for the fact I'm now writing two genres under one name. Your advice is much appreciated!

    Hiya Jayne,

I, too, enjoy the fact that I know which genre I’m going to be reading by knowing which name you’re using for that story. I don’t think it’s a bad thing or detrimental in any way and I’d say that it’s even positive. I find myself wishing that other authors do the same to make my life more simple…haha. For example, Robert B. Parker has so many series (and two different genres in mystery and western) that it’d be much simpler if he used a different name for all of ‘em… lolol… easy for me anyway, not so much for him.

We have two others that have more than one name right here in EL (Ann Maxwell, Elizabeth Lowell and A.E. Maxwell… and I think one more) and Lori (Lori Foster and LL Foster). Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb, Sherrilyn Kenyon /Kinley McGregor and Anne Rice/ A. N. Roquelaure/Anne Rampling are other examples of different genres for different names. I think Dean Koontz has used more than one name… and I’m sure there are more that I can’t think of or don’t know.

The fact is that if I enjoy the author I typically enjoy whatever they’ve written.

    Happy Monday!

I love all your worlds. You're an automatic buy no matter what name you're writing under. The fact that an extraordinarily talented author like yourself faced 'near-death experiences in the writing business' is dumbfounding.

I'm just glad you kept telling wonderful stories (under your many names) and offering readers like me hours (years!) of delight.

Your wit, humor and inventiveness, have been an influence in my career and it's good to know I'm not the only author who has fuddled through this writing business.

JILL: Thank you so much for the kind words! Your comment really made my day. I'm on pins and needles now, waiting to see how THE PERFECT POISON does on the lists its first week on sale. This is always a high stress time for authors. And I totally get not wanting to make that long drive from Portland on Saturday.

CHRIS TINA: Another day-making comment. Thank you so much! Well, I'm glad you remember those early paranormals so fondly because they killed off one of my names for a couple of years (Krentz). But I learned one very important lesson from them: How to write historicals!

WSTRIDGERUNNER: I definitely owe you for introducing me to readers who won't cross genres! Thanks! And I'm so glad you enjoyed THE PERFECT POISON.

KATE DOUGLAS: I'm delighted that you liked TPP. And in your case I think you absolutely did the right thing to stick with one name. DFENDER. You know, you're right. Sometimes it's easy to forget that there are other authors out there using multiple names. The real problem with having more than one pen name is that readers often never figure it out. When I go to signings there are always folks in the crowd who had no idea that Jayne Ann Krentz is Amanda Quick.

GATOR PERSON: Thanks for the names! Hmm. We're starting to build a list here. Might make a good blog....

DARA GIRARD. Oh, yes, indeedy, someday I will write a blog on my near-death experiences in this business. But like I said, the trick is recovering. There's a lot to be said for just showing up every day.

    Blogger elizabeth said...

Jayne--your books are wonderful no matter what the pen name. I know (Lord, how I know!) how difficult it is to get an audience to cross over into a different genre, whether the author is under one name or ten. I do think the audience likes to have a choice about which world to enter, which makes separate pen names useful.

Well, there's Donna Ball, who writes under an assortment of names, Megan Lindholm/Robin Hobb, who does sort of different things under each name, Victoria Holt, Barbara Micheals/Elizabeth Peters, and a whole bunch of others. What always surprised me was that I could devour some of a particular author's works under one name, and be bored to tears by the same person writing under a different name. And one that did amuse me no end on many levels was one co-authored by Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb.

EL: Yep, we share some history in this business, don't we? But, hey, we're both still here.

KARIBEAR: Yes, yes, we need more names for the "jayne is not alone" list. But that's interesting that you can enjoy some authors under one name but not the other. One would think that the voice would remain essentially the same. I do think that some authors have more than one voice, however.

    Jayne,

I really didn't know you had multiple personalities, so to speak until about a year ago. I agree with EL that it's nice to have a choice regarding what "voice" I'll be reading--but I can usually tell that by the cover :) I wouldn't just stop reading an author because they ventured outside of my realm of comfort. For the most part, when I find out about pen names, I tend to go and read all of the other books on the prior author recognition.

I find the change in, er, genres?, has really made the Arcane Society entertaining--just wish I had started the series with crib sheets! I loved The Perfect Poison, and found myself giggling knowing the future and waiting for the events to occur in the past.

    Thanks,

I frequent your web site so I know all the names under which you write/have written, including the names used when you wrote category romances.

Some of your readers who know you under a particular name may not know of the different names and may be missing out on some excellent reading. Hopefully they will find your book lists.

I buy all your books but I like the different names because I know what I am getting from AQ, JAK and JC.

I was surprised to read that there were issues with the Lavinia & Tobias series. I enjoyed that series. Maybe it's because I am biased?

Joy: Thanks so much for your enthusiasm for all my novels. I truly believe that one of the problems with the Lavinia & Tobias books was that, at the time, romance readers were not expecting so much suspense in their historicals. Also, they wanted to see a new couple in each book. The continuing characters didn't work for a lot of readers.

And, last but not least, I don't think the publisher knew how to market the books to an new audience that might (or might not!) have enjoyed them

But the good news is that everything I learned from Lavinia & Tobias books I took into my Arcane Society series! You see? For a writer, nothing is wasted.

While searching thru the web site of "Fanastic Fiction" which is a great site to search for thousands of authors & all their books, I came across all of the Harmony books, that were written by you. What a delight & surprise!! Needless to say, I hopped in my car and headed to the library to get what I could right away.

I just finished TPP and all thru the book, I was hoping & praying that C&L would not be two ships that passed in the night!! much to my delight the ending was perfect! The Arcane Shield is quite interesting...

I just heard last night that you were #5 on the BSL! Congrats!

I am just waiting not very patiently I might add, to become acquanted with little fuzzy "Vincent".........

I am always complaing to any one who will listen, that all of my favorite authors never write fast enough! we can never have enough of our favorite characters.

I came into your books through Amanda Quick, since I am a huge historical romance fan and then into Jayne Castle since I love Sci-Fi which brought me over to Krentz along the way of course.

The idea of the different names for different genres is something I have actually used in some of the class work shops I have taught about genre writing. You are one of the examples I use often. So I am glad you have it set up the way you do so I know what people are getting when they pick up your books. Besides it is a great writing technique.

Love Perfect Posion and I finally got my first one signed. Ok I had to have it shipped since I live no where near Seattle. so thanks for signing them and getting them sent out, I love my copy!

I've been reading the Amanda Quick titles since the early 90s, but I never really crossed over into the other ones until the Arcane Society series came along. Until today, I assumed that you chose to write it under your three names so that you would pull more readers like me (who love one particular world) over into the others. It's working, for the record. I'll always love the Quick world best, though, and I am glad you still use that name so I know when to get especially excited about a new book.

I'm sad that people didn't buy the Tobias and Lavinia books! I would love to read more.

    Oh Jayne:

I love that you use three names... it does help keep everything neat and tidy in my mind. It also adds an element of cleverness to the series that I have not encountered before... an "in" secret for those in the know, I suppose.

I do hope you will not give up on Lavinia and Tobias permanently, by the way. I love these characters and their adventures and want to know how their story ends. I half expected to have their tale woven into the Arcane Society as well.

Thanks so much for your writing. You are keeping an overeducated housewife sane up here in Canada!

I've always wondered about that. Explains why so long in between books too. I've always read you as Amanda Quick. Now I'm wondering if I've missed anything in the way of story lines by not picking up any of the others. I absolutely loved Lavinia and Tobias, I wondered where they went.

    Hi Jayne,

Just dropping by to tell you that I read your books and I love the different settings they bring to the readers.

My friend and I have been collecting your books since we discovered your writing. Although she prefers the historical ones.

Hope to see your new books on the shelves soon :)
