    Seeing the Great Southwest!

I’m posting from Camp Verde, Arizona, after an amazing trip through the Arizona desert. We started out in Las Vegas, Nevada a couple of days ago and made stops in Phoenix and Tucson to meet some of my readers before heading up the eastern side of the state toward Sedona. We decided to camp about forty miles short of our goal at a really nice RV park where we could catch up on laundry. I’ve spent the past couple hours watching clothes go ‘round and ‘round (Ah, the glamorous life of an author...) thinking about the cool stuff we did today

The neatest thing was a two hour hike through the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, which is an amazing cactus preserve outside of Superior, Arizona. Luckily, we went early, just before eight in the morning, and everything was fresh and cool. I imagine it turns into an absolute furnace by afternoon, but we saw some absolutely amazing cacti, and a lot of them were blooming.

The next really neat stop was near Lake Roosevelt where we hiked up a beautiful trail and saw Native American cliff dwellings. We couldn’t go inside them because they’re infested with bees! We were able to get really close and see how the dwellings were built.

The desert is still in bloom and the temperatures are warm but not too hot, so we’re having a great trip and seeing country that’s totally new to both of us. Plus, I’ve had terrific stops and visits with readers along the way at various bookstores, and there’s really nothing quite as much fun as putting a face with a name. I love being able to make this kind of connection.

You have to realize, my husband and I are mountain people. We’re used to life in a green forest of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir with lots of running water and an average yearly rainfall around 80-90 inches, so desert is totally new country for us. We’re having a great time, and can’t wait to see Sedona, our next stop along the way. That’s where I’m setting Hellfire, the second book in my Demon Slayers series, and I can’t wait to see the rock formations I’ve only seen photos of...which begs the question: what is your idea of the perfect vacation? I don’t think you can beat tooling along in a funky little motorhome, but that’s probably not for everyone. I’d love to hear what you enjoy the most.

Kate, what wonderful pictures! I like all kinds of trips. Love road trips with the right person. Love the mountains, love the beach. Like the cities, like the countryside.

I'm either easy to please or really wishy-washy. :/

Phooey! I wish I'd known you were here. I would have met you for lunch or took you through Sabino Canyon or something.

My current book is set in the Sedona / Flagstaff area, so feel free to do a little research for me while you're up there ;-)

    Hi Kate:

Thank you for sharing the great photos.

I like home the most! Green everywhere, lots of water, lots of rain although I do love to whine about it now and then.

My favorite vacation spot is where I live, Hawaii. But, I do like to go to the mainland to visit my kids and other family. But, it just feels perfect when I get off that plane to the heat and humidity and lush tropical greenery of Honolulu.

We have a night blooming cactus plant here (sorry, don't know the name), but it is beautiful when in bloom. It grown on lava rock walls. Pretty interesting.

    Aloha,

Susan: my husband retired just two years ago and since then we've traveled through the midwest, up into the northwest, I've made a couple of trips to NY and now through the southwest, and I am loving every place we go. I think it's the "who you're with" part that's important. After 37 years he's still the best travel companion I've even had!

Venus, you need to join my newsletter! I announce all our trips and make appointments at local bookstores to meet with the readers who connect with me. It's so much fun to actually just sit and gab for an hour or so...at least I love it! We're headed to Sedona today. Can't wait!

Stella, must admit that no matter where we go, I am always ready to go home. I've been missing our forest on this trip, though the desert is gorgeous, but this time I'm going home to a new kitchen. I'm really anxious to see how it turned out.

Kathy, your comment made me laugh. Our son and his family live in Kaneohe, so when we want to see the kids, we head FOR Oahu! I love it over there, though the humidity makes me wilt. However, I've never seen more beautiful flowers in my life than the ones growing in Hawaii.

Kris B, we love RV'ing, though we were laughing this morning when we got up and looked around at all the monster rigs and then at our little "Class B" rig--we're only 20 feet long, and compared to the 40' monsters, we're just a baby. It's got all the necessities, though: a kitchen, bathroom and king sized bed, but it's small enough to take on back roads and park at the grocery store. I actually prefer it to a hotel.

Deb, of all the places you've listed, Boston is the only one I've been to, though I loved our trip to northern Italy, we never made it to Sorrento. Our daughter was in the Air Force, stationed at Aviano, north of Venice, and we stayed with her. Loved the country and the food was amazing!

Not sure if I'll have Internet the next couple days, but will do my best to stay in touch. Thanks to everyone for stopping by.

Sedona is a perfect vacation. Be sure to take one of the "pink jeep" tours, which take you to formations not visible from the roads! There's a little Italian restaurant at the main Y intersection, with great food and rare Italian liqueurs for after dinner. You have to walk down some stairs to get there, but the tables have a wonderful view of Oak Creek Canyon with all the water and pine trees you miss.

Lucky Kate. You're in one of my favorite parts of the country. Part of my childhood was spent in the Four Corners area, so driving vacations were often into New Mexico and Arizona, and the beauty was stunning and often unexpected. Enjoy, and wave to the lizards for me.

My perfect vacation is a place where it is sunny and warm, with a beach and a sea I can swim in and lots and lots of beautyful fauna. Italy, comes to mind or southern islands in the Pacific.

Also mountainous areas. The Alps, The Rocky Mountains, The Carpathians and The Ural Mountains beckon.

The Middle East. Iran, Egypt, Lybia and Morocco are places I would like to see (and to hell with politics). Also Israel, especially Jerusalem.

South America. Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentine interest me. I wish I knew Spanish.

    In short. Hot places.

I love the high desert country - all through the Southwest. Like E.L., I prefer no cities. Spring is the best time to travel in the high desert as it is still (relatively) cool, and the flowers are blooming.

Since you are going to Sedona, you should drop by the Grand Canyon. And the painted desert and the petrified forest. And you should also drive into southern New Mexico and visit Carsbad Caverns.

And then there's Utah with Arches National Monument and Canyonlands National Park, and... and...

E.L. - Is Another Day in Paradise stuck in that closed warehouse? Has it been distributed? I can't find it anywhere including the bookstores. I've seen it on Amazon, but I don't like to buy on-line, so I don't have PayPal or anything like that.

    Hi Kate
    Great pic's--happy traveling!!
My vacation requirements are simple--clean bed, toilet and shower. Whether it's the Hyatt in Maui or the Curry cabins in Yosemite-I want a bathroom. =)
Although, I'm getting to where I do prefer less than more people!!
    Have fun

Anonymous--we're in Sedona now, staying at my husband's cousin's house near Sedona with a beautiful view of Cathedral Rock out the living room window. Doubt we'll take any of the tours--we're limited to how long we can be away because we travel with a little old dog and can't leave him, but we did take Rufus and hiked up Bell Rock today. It was gorgeous!

Lisa, I spent a summer working near Four Corners at Bluff, Utah, back in 1966! Love that country. Today in Sedona it's cloudy and the shadows on the red mountains are amazing.

Anonymous, you've mentioned some gorgeous places--I really haven't traveled much. We're just now getting to see our own country, and there's enough here to keep me mesmerized for years!

Jayne, I do love Sedona, but it's really, REALLY crowded. I doubt we'll stay long--we're both into the quiet, non-inhabited sort of thing. We did go see cliff dwellings today -- Montezuma's Castle -- and hiked back into the V-V ranch to see some amazing petroglyphs. I'm hopiong to get them loaded on my Facebook page later today.

Elizabeth--we had more wind than we need today! Gusts about 50 mph almost blew me off the hiking trail, but it was definitely gorgeous. The views were phenomenal.

Lou, we're headed to the Grand Canyon tomorrow, but won't make it to the other spots. I have a book due in a couple weeks and have to get home and finish it. I'm too busy looking at the scenery to write! And you'll probably have to order JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE. It's been released by a small press and the stores aren't carrying it, but ORDER IT! Trust me, it's worth any hassle so you can read it. It's an absolutely fantastic book.

Catherine, your post cracked me up! I'm the same way...we refer to our motorhome as the kennel/port-o-let! The dog has separation anxiety and we can't leave him anywhere, and I do NOT want to travel w/o a convenient bathroom! My days of roughing it are long gone, though I still love to camp. The motorhome is perfect for that.

Hi Lori--we're having a blast. We're at Doug's cousin's home in Sedona with a view of the back side of Cathedral Rock...the sun's coming up--it's on the red rock right now with dark clouds and blue sky behind it. Utterly magnificent! I think we're headed to the Grand Canyon later today...our kitchen still isn't done, so we can't go home yet.

Lou--unless you have a bookstore that's willing to order it for you, I'm afraid online is it.

Not a good time for books to be distributed!

True, Elizabeth, but as good as Just Another Day in Paradise is, it's well worth the hassle of ordering online!

Kate, posting from the parking lot of a Best Western in Barstow and hoping husband can get us a room!

I love all the pictures you've posted, Kate. Thank so much for making us all part of your journey. Strangely, I miss the ponderosa pines and douglas firs. I remember when I used to go to school in Oregon, how Christmassy that time of year smelled because they actually grow and ship Xmas trees from there.

Guess I'll just have to settle for fragrant plumerias and hibiscus flowers, huh?
