Animal Lovers - Read, Win, and Make a Difference!

    Photobucket

    Hello everyone!

As I write this, it's raining like crazy. Again! The weather forecast has only 3 sunny days out of the next 12. If your weather is the same, then we could all use a pick-me-up!

That's why I decided to blog about an upcoming multi-author anthology where author and agent proceeds go to my favorite no-kill animal shelter, the AAF.
    Animal Adoption Foundation - http://www.aafpets.com/

And... you could win some great goodies, just by posting! Read on!

TAILS OF LOVE is scheduled as a June 2nd release, but readers always spot books early, so I wanted to go ahead and get the word out there!

    Authors include:

    Lori Foster
    Stella Cameron
    Dianne Castell
    Kate Angell
    Ann Christopher
    Marcia James
    Donna MacMeans
    Sarah McCarty
    Patricia Sargeant
    Sue-Ellen Welfonder

    A Berkley Publishing trade paperback
    ISBN-10: 0425227685
    ISBN-13: 978-0425227688

In this irresistible romance anthology of never-before-published stories, 10 award-winning and best-selling authors come together to celebrate their love of animals and the wonderful, curious ways they take part in our lives.

From Seeing Eye dogs to the cat who sits in your lap, animals are there for us in more ways than we can count. Helping us get through the day with a wag of the tail and a tilt of the head, they let us know that someone is on our side—no matter what. They also have an uncanny ability to break down barriers between people, bringing families and loved ones closer, and giving strangers an excuse to strike up a conversation.

In Tails of Love, each writer draws from her own unique perspective on our loyal friends—exploring the many, mysterious ways they bring love into our lives.

*** All of the authors and our agents are donating all of our proceeds from this anthology to the Animal Adoption Foundation of Hamilton, Ohio. This project is an example of romance authors giving back to our communities. And, as you know, with the way publishing proceeds are paid, Tails of Love will continue to provide much-needed funding for this no-kill animal shelter for many years. ***

There's not enough room for me to recap each author's story, but if you follow the links, you can read more!

Here's a brief review from RT Reviews

"This endearing collection of 10 original love stories features notable authors such as Lori Foster, Stella Cameron, Kate Angell and Dianne Castell, who weave stories about love and animal companionship. Each story is entertaining and unique, with contemporary characters and larger-than-life four-legged friends. ... all-in-all, an entertaining collection that can be consumed in one sitting or divided up and enjoyed in small, luxurious bites - one story at a time."

Summary: Whether it's a playfully destructive goat or a manipulative and loyal cat, these animals have a creative way of bringing love into the lives of their humans. Highlights include: Foster's "Man's Best Friend," in which a broken-down car and a lost puppy force Erin Schuler to call the one person she knows she can count on to rescue them, long-time crush and professional mixed martial arts fighter Gary Rutledge. In Angell's "Norah's Arc," Mike Kraft has just about had it with Norah Archer's wayward goat, Houdini. When he finds it standing on top of his Corvette, it's the last straw -- until he sees how devoted Norah is to her rescued animals.

And a wonderful review at Kwips and Kritiques.

Romance is in the air and there are some animals who have their hearts set on seeing their people happy in TAILS OF LOVE!

Lori Foster kicks off the anthology with Man’s Best Friend. Erin Schuler can’t resist rescuing the bedraggled puppy she stumbles over in the park. But who will rescue her when her car won’t start during the torrential rainstorm? She’s forced to turn to SBC fighter, Gary Rutledge. Erin has known Gary since they were both kids but does she know he’s been waiting for her?
Lori Foster is one of the masters of romance, whether a full length novel or a short story and Man’s Best Friend is yet another example of why her stories are so loved. Who couldn’t help but lose their heart to the abandoned puppy and the two main characters willing to rescue him? Readers will note that Man’s Best Friend is part of the SBC Fighter series but one can easily read it without any knowledge of the series. However, be warned that once you get this tiny taste of the world of the SBC, you’ll likely want more!

There's an extended excerpt of my story at my site, LoriFoster.com, posted here: http://www.lorifoster.com/books/tails/index.php#excerpt

    So what about you?
Do you have a funny, endearing, or just plain entertaining animal story to share?
Do you, like me, have a menagerie of pets that keep you entertained?
Did you find a pet in a unique way -as my son did while delivering pizzas?

For everyone who posts, I'll put you in a special Mother's Day drawing to win these fun prizes!

    T-shirt
    mouse pad
    key chain
    pen
    small poster
and an early copy of my reissued book, due out in June, IMPETUOUS,
part of Harlequin's "Famous First" program!

I'll draw a name on Sunday evening, and post the winner here.
*** Then it'll be up to the winner to email me her snail mail address! ***

    Happy rainy weekend everyone!

    Hi Lori,
I think your anthologies for causes are great! Power of Love was just another of your fabulous stories, and can't wait to read Tails of Love especially since it includes not only a story of yours, but also Sarah McCarty. I have been watching this one for a LOOOONG time!

My pet story involves my brother when he was maybe 4-5 yrs old (he's now 30). We used to visit my grandparents house regularly and they lived on a small pond with many backyards surrounding the perimeter.

Every time we went to visit he would walk around the pond to peer at a dog through the chain link fence. He would stand there for what would seem like hours, just talking and petting the dog.
We did not have a pet at home at the time, but my brother would cry every time he had to leave and go home.

One Saturday my Mom and my grandfather walked into the living room and in my mother's hands was the smallest dog I have ever seen. They had brought home a baby Boston Terrior.

My mother had one named Ginger as she was growing up, and sadly the dog was kicked by a repairman which ruptured it's stomach and caused it's death (which is why I think she chose this type of dog for our family).

We did not get her from an animal shelter, but "Maggie" was the runt of the litter and she had to be hand feed she was so small. To give you some idea of her size she could barely get her head into a small margarine tub to dring water from, so we had to use just the lid from the tub so she could drink the water. So in some part I feel that we saved her. She was always on the smaller side of the breed, but she lived for 14 years with us, and provided no end of fun and love as we were all growing up.

Pets are an invaluable addition to any family, and we support our local humane society through blanket and cash donations whenever there is a need.

Keep up the great work. I hope you realize how much we all appreciate all of the hard work that you do to bring us the stories we love so much!

My shelter mutt, Ivy, is the smartest dog on the planet, of course. I have to watch her when I change my son's diapers. She likes to get in there and "pre-clean." I confess that sometimes I'm tempted to let her.

I know what you mean about the rain Lori, I live just across the border in PA, we finally had a break in the rain yesterday so we mowed the lawn, and the standing puddles of water. :-)

As for animal stories - yup I do. It invloved my first cat (he passed away in 2007 at the age of 18 - and I still miss him).

I found him - literally - on April 1st - April Fools Fay. i'd gone out to feed the outdoor dogs (we live in teh country and had two at the time). The one was outside his coop, looking in, and I thought what the heck, and actually asked him why was he outside. Then I thought what happened did something get inside? I thought at first it might have been a skunk, so I slowly approached his coop door and knelt down, no odor, so I looked in and saw these 2 eyes looking at me, and thought yup something got in, may it was a baby coon or something. Notice I never thought of cat :-) I got back up and went to get a flashlight, cause if it was a coon, I didn't want to get bit, I came back and turned it on as I knelt down, and here was this little black and white kitten, he was so small I could hold him in the palm of my hand, I had no idea at that time that he'd crawled into my heart at the same time he crawled into the palm of my hand. Oh and by the way the dog was also a stray - a large one a husky/shepherd mix with one blue eye and one brown, but he was afraid of that little thing :-)

Gotta go blow my nose and wipe my eyes now.

Hi Lori! Great post, and I'm looking forward to picking up lots of copies of Tails of Love when it releases- what an awesome birthday present it will make for many of my friends!
I've been lucky enough to grow up in a family that loved all animals, and I've had dozens of pets through the years. My favorite story is probably the day when my father (who was a single parent) came home from work with a big cardboard box filled with four tiny kittens that he found in the garbage dumpster behind his building. Being a huge sucker for a cute face, he just had to bring them home. There were 3 all black kittens, and one silver tabby. All male. My brother and I convinced Dad to let us keep all of the kittens, and, Dad, being the witty person that he is, named them Martin, Luther, King and Junior.
We had those cats for years, and my father's kindness really left an impression on me that has lasted well over fifteen years now.
    Have a great day everyone!

    Hiya Lori!
Whatta terrific cause... and I know I've blathered on about my Siberian Husky, Juno, before so I won't do it again.

We went to buy his *cough* organic dog food the other day and ran into a group from a no-kill shelter with dogs and cats to adopt. Heartbreaking. Now we're looking into adopting a companion for Juno. We wanna make sure that the new family member gets along with everyone, including Juno...lol. I'll let you know the outcome!

I have kids so of course there are a gabillion pet and stray stories from their youth... one about the turtle in the lunch box... the gerbil in the floor vent... etc.
snortsThe exerpt and trailer are great. Gotta love heartwarming pet stories. *sigh*Happy Mother's Day to all!!!

Sounds like you are having the weather we just finished with. Blechhh!

I have 3 dogs, a cockatoo, and a horse, all rescues. I was sort of a private rescue when I lived in Alaska, and over the years I've had over 60 dogs, about a dozen cats, and a flock of hookbills of one kind or another, all of whom had their own stories.

Probably the one that sticks in my mind the most was the border collie. DH found a litter in a box in a dumpster behind a grocery store - he'd climbed in and gotten the box that was making all the noise. It was a litter about 2 weeks old [or less] and we kept the smallest, sickliest one. She lived inside his shirt the first few weeks, and I cooked up hamburger and rice to feed her. She grew into one of the all-time best dogs in the world, and we had her for 12 years.

Rufus is sitting here staring at me as I read this. He was thrown out of a car ten years ago. It took me three days to catch him--he was so traumatized and had been terribly mistreated. He weighed just ten pounds--at sixteen pounds he's at a healthy weight. He's neurotic and has serious separation anxiety, and I can't imagine life without him. He's a terrier mix, and the perfect companion for the two of us. Our other dog had died and I made the foolish comment to my husband, "The dog is dead, the kids are gone, we're free at last."

NEVER tempt God. Rufus arrived a week later.

Oh, Lori ... it's so good to see the anthology highlighted so nicely and, especially, to read everyone's special animal tales. Wow!

I can't believe Tails of Love is almost on the shelves. Where did the time go? But - yay! Helping needy pets is such a wonderful cause. I am thrilled to have a story in the anthology and had so much fun writing A Man, A Woman, And Haggis.

For readers, here is a mini-blurb for my story:

Finding love is the last thing on Jilly Pepper's mind when she travels to Loch Lomond, but Scotland's magic is hard to resist, especially when local Kieran MacColl and his haggis-craving border collie prove that happiness often comes when least expected in A Man, A Woman, and Haggis.

There's a mini excerpt on my website and also the website of my alter-ego, Allie Mackay.

Again, it's great seeing TAILS OF LOVE highlighted today. And it's truly wonderful to see how many romance readers are also animal lovers.

Let's hope Tails of Love does super well and we're able to make a real difference for some very deserving animals.

    Go pets!

PS to Mary - I am owned by a Jack Russell, too. He's my entire world and I can't find words to say how much I love him. They're fantastic dogs!

I've been looking forward to this book since Patricia Sargeant posted about it a while ago. Great, great cause.

I have a slowly shrinking menagerie which currently stands at 5. Old age is the primary culprit, thank goodness. I love them all and so far have resisted replacing those past with new.

Best pet story is about the puppy I adopted from a vet clinic my dd volunteered at during college. This little guy had been run over by his first owner and dropped off at the vet to be euthanized. The clinic donated thousands of dollars in time and care to get him back to health. He lost one back leg in the process and suffered multiple surgeries. Another company donated wheels for him to get around. Still he lived in constant pain and despite every volunteer's help died before his first birthday. Okay, I'm tearing up here and it's been 7 years now. What I remember most is him facing so much physical adversity from such a young age and yet he always had an enthusiastic and loving manner. He more than repaid everyone who helped him with the love he unceasingly gave. He was a shining example of why no kill I shelters are so important. I will forever miss his funny little gait as he happily scooted to sit in my lap whenever I came home.

Tears or not, thanks for letting me share him with you.

Almost three years ago, I finally gave into my husband's begging and let him get a dog for us. I had never had a furry pet before, and I was skeptical. But of course now I can't imagine life without our Schnoodle, Evey Louise. She is forever scheming to get food off the table or steal our socks. Her favorite trick is whining at the side of our bed so my husband will get out to help her up. As soon as he leaves his spot, she jumps up on her own, runs to his pillow, and curls up as if it's her own personal doggy bed. Stinker.

We have had a number of pets. My first dog was found in the back of a car, abandoned. My dad rescued him and brought him home. We had 13loving years with the dog... but he worshipped my dad over everyone else. A german shepard/collie mix, he used to crawl in between my parents and, with his back against my dad, would kick my mom out of bed. It was always hilarious.

We had two other dogs, and then Tochet, whom I had for 16 wonderful years. February was an incredibly hard month for me, mainly because we had to put her down. It was what I owed her for the love she shared with me for oh, so long.

Recently, I got two kittens. I am so glad that I got two of them. They are hilarious and keep each other company. They go from full on to a full stop. It has been over a full week with them and they are very comfy in the house. They love going to my bedroom, and if I go in and close the door, they meow at it. When I come home, they know it is time for supper so they will follow me until I give them food.

They also decide when I have worked too much and will crawl on top of my laptop keyboard and simply go to sleep. They enrich my life and it is nice to have my house not feel empty anymore.

Hi Lori! I like the way all of you decided to donate your stories for this great cause. I'm sure the book is great and I can't wait to read it. As for my pets, every one has a great story behind him/her. But my biggest love was Shih-Tzu that I got for my birthday when I was 10. We went through war together, hiding in the basements, running from bombs. He was with me all the time. We survived and he lived for 14 years. He was very sick and many diseases were caused by wet and cold basements. I had to put him to sleep 2 years ago. It was the hardest thing to do. Now I have 5 cats but no dog. I'm still not over him.

    Hi Lori
Looking forward to buying the book and supporting a great cause.

I've got two fuzzy mutts: Cookie aka fuzzy butt or the sous chef (cause she likes to help me cook by being under foot) was tossed out in our neighborhood where she ran loose for about two weeks. Neighbors were trying to catch her but weren't having any luck. I spotted her watching me one day from a bush at the side of the road so I just sat down and she came and crawled in my lap. Even though she was only about 9 months old she had obviously had a rough time. For the first year she was reserved and rather remote, no happy happy joy joy doggy greetings, but she slowly came out of her shell. After she'd been with us about a year she started acting depressed every time I'd leave the house. Figuring that it was going to be less expensive to get her a buddy rather than doggy day care, visits to a shrink or meds, we adopted a shelter dog. Jenks, or sugarboy (such a good boy slurred together) appears to be a Maltese-Chihuahua cross and is the most happy go lucky dog in the world.
Collectively know as the Cook & the Butler they rule the house and I now get a double dose of happy happy joy joy dog greeting every time I come home. I’m the one who suffers from separation anxiety if I have to travel without them, which is fortunately pretty rarely.

Oh, boy, Lori--I've sniffed my way through your blog and all the wonderful posts.

As I type my huge, 6lb dog, Millie, is barking up a storm and I have no idea why unless she thinks the Mango the cat could have gotten a treat on the sly.

This collection of stories is a dream for me--the ultimate opportunity to give back to some of the ones who have been my most constant companions in life.

As a kid, we never had less than five cats. Why five? I don't know but it got up to that many and on those terrible occasions when we lost a buddy, a new buddy soon joined the pack. We had dogs, and we also had a goat--and there was Algernon, my tortoise who loved lobelia and alyssum. Algernon spent his winters beneath the bonfire pile--must really have liked being warm because he popped out each spring looking just dandy.

Names I remember: Timmy, Panda, Tommy, Nicky, Biggles, Thai Loo, Honey, Heathcote, Schroeder, O'Mally, Raven, Spike...and I'm going to start bawling if I don't quit.

Love to all and I hope lots of people will have some special moments with TAILS OF LOVE.

We have one dog that we got from the Humane Society. We've had her about 7,8 years now. She drives dh crazy cause she likes to dig holes all over the yard.

Can't wait for the book! I have been training dogs for nine years so I have way too many stories, so I would like to remind everyone that with the hot weather we need to watch our dogs paws. If we can't walk on the ground barefoot then it is too hot for our dogs too! Dog pads can burn and blister just like ours. If you see them hopping around it is too hot! Have a fun summer with your pets :)

That is so great and I am definitely picking up a couple of Tails of Love. I have a ton of pet stories. Right now though I have 2 cats, one I inherited and one I adopted. Both were saves from Animal Control on their last days. My cat before them was the son of a stray found by my cousin and my mom had a cat that the same cousin rescued from a field.

I can hardly wait to get a copy of Tails of Love for myself. It sounds full of fun and love, and for such a good cause.

It's been a while since I had a dog. I had to put my beloved Gypsy to sleep after she followed me up the stairs and fell coming back down. She was over 15 and had had one of her front legs amputated because of a tumor. I had always had dogs, but she was my husbands first pet and he was devastated by her loss. Now that he's gone, I live near my 84 yr old father, and he has a toy poodle (she has a love affair going with a stuffed bear - have you seen Sex and the City, the movie?). I think I'll keep my options open for now.

    Thanks,

    Phyllis

    I grew up with dogs.

My dog, Sandy passed away at the foot of my bed on the morning I was to leave for college.

They are so affectionate and comforting.

Several ladies here take dogs to the nursing homes to befriend the older people.

We are all so hopeful that TAILS OF LOVE does well so that the animals will get lots and lots of help.

I have my 2 labs,Tai'ree and Sargeant. Both are michievious but Sargie is the more outgoing of the 2. They do something funny every single day. If I am in a bad mood or depressed I just need to hang out with my dogs and I'll be uplifted.

The latest funny thing that makes me smile everytime is Tai's new ritual. Before she jumps in my suv she has to circle around the whole thing! She is almost 10 so her hips arent as good as they used to be so I think she runs around the whole truck because she thinks she is gathering speed to get a jump start lol. Reality is she is still having to stop at the open door before jumping. (I try to help her in and out as she won't use the doggy ramp).
