JAYNE PONDERS THE DECLINE OF BLOGS. OR NOT

So I'm reading the Sunday papers (The New York Times, Sunday Styles section just to be clear about the source. Hey, I'm a former librarian, I always credit the source) and there's this piece titled "Blogs Falling in an Empty Forest" by Douglas Quenqua. The article points out that a lot of blogs have gone fallow, so to speak. They have either stalled out altogether or are only updated occasionally. Other blogs have moved to the social networking sites.

But here at RWQ we are going into our fourth year and we are still going strong. In fact, our traffic has actually grown over time, not declined. Clearly we are bucking the trend. According to the stats we pull around 1500 - 2000 pageviews per day. That translates into 10,000 to 16,000 hits. No, we're not one of those hot political blogs but we're hot, nonetheless.

The question that arises is, how the heck have we survived? I have some theories.

First, there are (thank goodness!) six of us here to carry the load. That means that we each blog only once every other week. None of us is under the extreme stress of trying to blog every day or even once a week. That, in turn, gives our visitors a wide variety of voices and topics. You never know what you're going to see when you tune into RWQ.

Second, RWQ is a book-and-author oriented blog. That means that we tend to attract visitors who are -duh! — interested in books and writing. Cool crowd. What's more, it is by definition a literate crowd that is intrigued by all things associated with books and writing. Once again, a very cool group of folks.

Third, RWQ has, from the very beginning, always been a friendly, civil, cheerful community of bloggers and visitors. Yes, we do a little whining from time to time but we always serve cheese with that whine.

Fourth: RWQ has survived. This is no small thing in the modern world where fads and trends tend to come and go at lightning speed. And we have survived because of you, our hardy band of regular visitors. You have made this blog a genuine online community and we thank you for that. Couldn't have done it without you.

Now, let's hear from you. Why do you come back to RWQ and what have you noticed about the rise and fall of other blogs? What's your take on the blog scene?

    Sincerely,

    Jayne

I come back to rwq because I love to read what authors write! ;) I have read other blogs but dont go to them daily I come here daily to see what is on the minds of readers, what is coming out, what your thoughts are on the daily things in life and you never know who is guest blogging! and I have read NEW authors from reading the blog! i do always like expanding my reading! I am just a reader but I like authors which is good huh?
I can't say much about other blog communities because I don't go to them much and can't say! I do facebook now mostly just for friends however I could see where you get instant feedback from that (public or private) where the blog you have to go to to see! however rwq is in my daily half hour in the morning 3rd stop after my banks! LOL :-) I do like knowing authors are just like the rest of us! and you 6 are my very favorites! and yes I think it helps alot that there are 6 of you to take up the slack and keep it fresh! if it was just one person that seems like wayyyy too much work! and well then it would be work instead of fun!

    Dear Jayne,

I come back to RWQ for many reasons including the ones Kris B. mentioned. I grew up reading your and Elizabeth Lowell's books as a teen and continue to read them now. You and the other Quills are generous with your time and always friendly. And you continuously maintain and update your pages keeping the topics and information fresh.

All of you keep your promises to the readers and always give notice or reasons for "missed" deadlines and late posts. I visit RWQ at least three times a week, sometimes more than once a day, to read about your writing adventures. Your blogs are a nice break from work or interesting reading in the mornings with breakfast. Thanks again Quillers!

I love RWQ because I think it's fascinating to hear my favorite historical romance author (ahem, Amanda Quick) use her "real voice" -- i.e. one that is not edited and analyzed by various other people -- and get a glimpse into real life author stuff. I have also gotten to "meet" the rest of the authors/bloggers here, which has added some great new books to my reading list.

I have resisted entering facebook despite the pestering of friends, I much prefer blogging and chatting on parenting forums. I personally am surprised to hear that article mention the decline of blogs, because in my circle of the blogosphere, it seems to still be booming!

KRIS B: Thanks so much for dropping in regularly. You are part of what makes this blog a true community.

JENNIFER: We're delighted to have you as part of our gang here at RWQ. I've always said that if you hang around us and our books it must be because we have a lot in common when it comes to values and worldviews.

SUNNY: And we're delighted to have you here. I think that one of the problems the article uncovered was that a lot of blogs had moved to Facebook. We shall see where that goes.

I come back because there is always something different written by someone different. *G* Not to mention I am a reader and I find authors blogs a good way to keep up with an author and their works. Y'all are kind and talented and have introduced me to new-to-me authors as well. So, THANK YOU! *G*

I think, on the whole, Facebook & MySpace have declined the individual blog sites and as everyone is saying - it's a lot of work to keep up even weekly entries.

I think part of RWQ charm is you are unique - a long running group from suspense thrillers to eroitca and so up beat. It's no wonder we stop in daily even if you don't always respond. And it's a great place to find the next read, of course I think most of us have tettering TBR piles or very long lists.

    HI Jayne,
I think you already covered the real reasons this blog has flourished. All whines are served with cheese and/or chocolate, there are six different idea sources, your community is...A COMMUNITY (woohoo, cheers for us), and we all love us some books. This is the place I come to connect with my favorite authors and other people who read them. This is a little coven brewing up plots and characters and sharing ideas on how to control complete towns/worlds of people and make them do what we want them to do...find love. Okay, and some sex, too. And maybe a dust bunny.

I learn from all the people who comment and from all the Quills. And I can honestly say I would enjoy being in a huge room for hours and hours just hanging out with everybody. Hey! Maybe we should do a convention of Quillsters!

BRANDY: Thanks for coming back and helping us form a community here at RWQ.

ZEUSLY: Yes, as my old friend and sister Quill, Suzanne Simmons (who, sadly, is no longer with us) used to say, "RWQ has survived because we went into the project with a decidedly half-assed approach". In other words, we did not over-plan or over-schedule. The result is, if nothing else, a lot of variety. But I also think we have attracted a crowd that is, at heart, positive and upbeat.

LYNNE THOMAS: Yep, you're right. We have forged a genuine community here at RWQ. Love your idea of a convention of Quillsters, by the way! Would that be wild or what?

SUSAN: Book people are, indeed, fun.

oh, i don't know. I think this article is a silly article. a bit like saying there are restaurants failing all over the place. there are always going to be blogs that fail, while a few succeed. just like most restaurants can and will fail, except for the successful few. because it's hard. the first few entries aren't so hard because the blogger probably had a lot he/she wanted to say at first (which prompted starting the blog in the first place). Continuing a blog on a consistent basis requires a lot of dedication and inspiration. Sometimes people just run out of stuff to say. Or life gets in the way.

and of course an audience helps (if that's your aim).

Penny Arcade recently pointed out a similar article written that said no one has figured out how to make online comics a full time job. Which is ridiculous. (Penny-arcade.com is a HUGELY successful online comic that publishes a comic every monday, wednesday, friday without fail. it's their full time job.)

The reasons I come back to the quills:
    - you guys are among my favorite authors, so it's fun to see what else goes on in the mysterious brains of authors. ;)
    - you update fairly regularly
    - you guys pose good questions sometimes at the end of your blogs which prompts interaction
    - plus, we get little peeks about your upcoming books, yay.

Reasons why I stop reading certain blogs or online comics
    - they stop updating regularly
    - the content is no longer compelling

    Hiya Jayne!

RWQ is my favorite author touchstone. It keeps me up to date on all of your latest and greatest as well as your favorite writers and books. It gives us a little peek into the worlds of uber authors. I figure if I like your "author voice" I'll like your "blog voice" too... and after all these years, really, what's not to like??? LOL.

Besides all that... you're a cool, hip, well spoken, hilarious group of women. I'm honored to be able to take part in your blogging experience... whackjob that I may be, I feel like you're all my friends... in an on-line, distant sorta way...LOLOL

Congratulations... and Rock on, Ladies :-)

Hi, Erin: Whew! Thanks. I did figure out that you were referring to the NYT article but thanks for clarifying, anyway. And, yes, I agree with you, a lot of blogs probably went out of business because the blogger ran out of things to say. Around RWQ we have not encountered that problem yet. Seems like authors always have something talk about!

And, as the article pointed out, there is the Facebook factor. A lot of folks are using it to do what they once did with their blogs.

When you're talking about the web, it all comes down to communication and community, I think.

Good morning, Jayne! Great post--I was an RWQ fan long before I was invited to join the Quills (which still just makes me absolutely giddy! Me? Oh my...) and the thing I loved most about this blog was the lack of snark. So many blogs go for the negative side of things, but at RWQ I know I'm going to hear good news about new books, thoughts about peoples' lives and what's going on in the writing world, but always written in a positive, upbeat nature. There's enough grim news around that I don't want more of it in a blog. I want to know about good books coming up, what my fellow Quills are doing in their lives, and I want the wonderful feedback from our terrific readers.

As an author, most of my time is spent at my computer writing--this blog is a big part of my social life, and I love spending my time with the wonderful folks--authors and readers--who stop by here on a regular basis. I consider you all a part of my social network, and I choose to spend what little free time I have with folks who have a positive outlook on life and who love to read the same kinds of books I do.

I visit the RWQ blog because it is always interesting. Leave it to great authors to come up with interesting, funny, sometimes intriguing subject to “chat” about. It is a little time away that works if you don’t have time to dive into a book. Then you get to see other views on a subject when people comment. Great way to keep that mind open. ;)

When there are guest bloggers, our eyes are reopened to the world of other authors.

As for the social networking sites, I first had friends drag me into Yahoo’s 360, then they bailed for Myspace, then they bailed from that for Facebook and 1 Latino friend that has hi5. I gave up at Myspace, and only 1 friend & 1 cousin ever are on there now, and the cousin is bailing for Facebook. I surrender! I can’t keep up! I have their email addresses and/or phone numbers and if I/we want to talk, at least that is faster than snail mail.

Jayne, about once or twice a year I actually discuss your Arcane society books with a lady in Finland. She is a librarian too. :) We get busy, but when one of us gets one of your books, we write & talk about it.

This is the only blog where I'm anything close to being a regular. There are a few others that I'd like to go to, but the one thing I find is that, at the moment, I'm anything but patient: I just don't like to take the time to read a long 10-minute entry or anything that is just too banal or ridiculous.

I find most of the subjects here interesting and to the point, and most of all, I enjoy the books by the authors and want to get a peek into the workings of an author's mind--so different from my own.

However, that doesn't mean that I always have something to contribute, and when I don't, I'd rather keep my mouth shut--as I do in "real" life.

I started looking at blogs when I first created my own. Ever after, it wouldn't let me into it to post anything at all, so I guess my pitiful effort is one of those that faded away. I also wanted to get away from the no-holds-barred newsgroups. Hello, blogs!

I like RWQ because there are so many different viewpoints, so many different kinds of books, and each one of you have stories about the backstage of being a writer. It’s nice to see that writers are real people, that all those books in the libraries and bookstores weren’t just churned out in a closet somewhere [I used to think that teachers lived at school, so why not writers in libraries?]. I also like that you each have pet projects of one kind or another that you support in Real Life.

I don’t comment as often any more, but I still check in frequently. Glory be, I now have a Life of my own, outside the computer - and I no longer need the escapism of HEAs while my husband was bedridden for so long. Now I can concentrate on living my own life again.

Back to RWQ, one of the reasons I like it is because you all appear to like your readers. I’ve come across a few blogs by authors I’d enjoyed in the past, and believe me, there was no cheese or chocolate with their whine! I felt rather like I was taking up their valuable time just reading their blogs, so I quit. I’ve found new writers and some new blogs to visit through RWQ, and it all pleases me.

I have a secret: Whispering now--sometimes the middle of "my" blog Sunday rolls around, I slap a hand to my brow and mutter, "Not again. I don't have a thing to write about>)"

I'm pretty certain every one of us has those days but the community brings us back. The community and the folks who stop by regularly or now and again and are so open.

Another element about Quills that pleases me is that folks write about all sorts of things--not just, "This is my new book and it's on sale for you to buy." Obviously those are events that are of interest to all of us, but I also love to hear about vacations, hobbies, horrible happenings and the like.

Jayne, great blog and sorry I'm so late. I was in Cincinnati with all the lovely people who went to Lori and Dianne's gathering.

You all take time to share thoughts, opinions, ask our opinions, be silly, and yes, keep us posted on your next book. We are interested in that too, like the starving masses waiting for a restaurant to open, lol! You all love writing and reading (and other things too), you share new authors with us. Your guest bloggers give us new writers to check out. It's just a fun place to be. Keep blogging, we'll keep reading. Sue G
